Sen. Burris: Symbolism Over Substance

Burris has acknowledged that, before his appointment to the U.S. Senate, he was asked to raise money for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and tried, unsuccessfully, to do so.

S. Eudora Smith

As Sen. Roland Burris’ listening tour apparently deteriorates into a dismissing tour, perhaps black voters will finally abandon the politics of symbolism that Burris has eagerly manipulated.

Not long ago, Rod Blagojevich, then the governor of Illinois, cynically chose the aging egotist to fill the seat vacated by President Barack Obama. Longing for a place in national history, Burris, who had already earned mention in state history, greedily grabbed for the new honor—even though his acceptance of the governor’s offer allowed the mentally challenged Blago to cloud the corruption allegations against him with an appeal to racial symbolism. The issue quickly became keeping an African-American as an Illinois senator, not the governor’s sleazy comments and alleged efforts to sell the seat, which were captured on a federal wiretap.

Burris’ desire for a higher political perch was abetted by U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, who used the word lynching to describe the elder’s initial encounters with a dismissive U.S. Senate leadership. Adding to the theater, a posse of black preachers anointed Burris as he prepared in January for his trip to Washington to claim his seat. Clutching his appointment letter from Blagojevich, a befuddled-looking Burris ambled about the halls of power seeking an audience, before holding a news conference in the rain, looking frail and earnest.

Weeks later, he is still looking befuddled, but not earnest, as he stumbles under questioning about the veracity of his statements to the Illinois committee that impeached Blagojevich. It may seem a small thing to chastise Burris for failing to say he had discussions with the former governor’s brother about raising funds for Blagojevich. But it was just such an issue of ethics—alleged “pay to play” for the Senate seat—that resulted in Blagojevich’s undoing. Burris’ decision to sidestep full disclosure points to only one conclusion: He didn’t want anything to get in the way of his becoming a U.S. senator.

Now, we are back to where we started weeks ago, asking the same question that was asked when Blagojevich appointed Burris: Is it ethical for a governor under suspicion of trying to sell a Senate seat to appoint someone to that position? Burris has answered the question conclusively.

And his participation in this protracted farce in which he has become the last cast member (the former governor and supporting actors have departed the stage) has been propelled by racial symbolism. Blagojevich tried to use it to detract from his troubles; Burris carried the baton to promote his own ambitions. It’s an old game of switching substance for symbols. Yet, once again, some of us black Americans fell hard for this political Ponzi scheme.

Dems are going to have to grow a backbone sooner or later and decide if they want to play this contact sport called politics. Coming from Chicago, Burris knows how it is played. Chicago might be a must training course for all Democrats. For eight years we have watched cave in after cave in by the spineless wonders. Burris is making people nervous, he, blogo and Obama are showing signs of backbone.

All of you ragging on Burris, take your hypocritical asses to a cliff and jump off. Go F***k yourselves.  All politicians solicit money and favors, don’t hold Burris to any higher standard. Burris also disclosed his contacts.  More than we can say about Rahmn Emanuel spoke to Blago’s people. Gov. Richardson was under federal investigation for bribery when selected for Commerce, Daschle made $2.5 M a year working for a law firm with a BA in poli-sci.  Go F**k yourselves.  Sick of White people clamoring about morality and standards when you have none.

Next you’ll tell me Lebron is your child’s role model.  Get a damn life.

Thanks for the grammar lesson, Easm…don’t tell me, Africana Studies & English Professor, right.  Glad for the help.

Forget the first paragraph of your response, I don’t recall putting those words “in your mouth”. They were merely my response to your position(s).

Now that we have by bad writing out of the way:

You can protect the Chicago dirty-pool played by preachers and “leaders” all you want, but the truth of the matter remains; they continue to back crooked and idiotic politicians which does little to help the people of Chicago move forward.  They’re still fighting the struggles of the sixties and seventies and continue using broken tactics and ineffective practitioners because it moves some of them, while it strengthens ass-backward and destructive policies.

I do refute your insistence that “bad” black politicians get a free pass, and you’ve implied that, because white ones get away with it (That’s Just silly)[MY WORDS]. I do not accept your reason for screaming “racism” just because the fact that groups of people, black or white, are fooled by Elitist machine politicians in Chicago.  You claim I’m calling them stupid, I think they are just fooled, like most people are. But comparing that to post-reconstruction disenfranchisement is a stretch of historical and contemporary realities. The former is about the internal aspect of urban politics and the mindless, short-sighted and at times, pernicious positions taken by “community-leaders” (Burris) which serves no one except themselves and the empowered, but nothing for Chicagoans on the South-Side. Unfortunately, churches are the primary, and at times, the only, institutions in these communities and preachers are at its helm. The latter was imposed by an all-powerful government, for industry seeking the all mighty dollar, among other things, and a desire to maintain timocratic southern rule over blacks, to protect property and political power. An Honor Society with those to dishonor, sound familiar?

Keep on with the Black Panther BULL S*IT and fail just like they did.  Keep calling EVERYONE who don’t agree with you “RACIST” because you think that kills the issue and gives you a win.

On day, maybe/maybe not, I might be better able to write on this electronic box (computer?), but I fear you’ll just keep spinning in that BS oil slick that has trapped too many blacks for way too long.

Black Liberal Elites such as yourself will crash one day.

ApprxAm:

Please don’t put words in my mouth. Where do you see the “just as silly” quote in my post? Where do see “crooked”? Are you sure you’ve read my post? No, Ithink you’re just putting up ‘straw men’ to knock down. Happens all the time with people who have nothing to say. I understand.

But, I’ll take the bait. Look, an “objective”(your word) assessment of the appointment would not take race into consideration. The point of the article and your commentary appears to be to present the Black Electorate as ignorant or gullible for supporting certain Black candidates that you don’t like. That IS racist and is the same argument white supremacists used to justify the disenfranchisement of newly freed blacks during reconstruction and to prevent blacks from voting afterward. Your denial of this fact doesn’t change the truth.

(Your characterization of black preachers as “barely literate” is laughable in light of the grammatical mess that is your response to my post. I’ll forgive you and remind you that spellcheck is no substitute for higher learnin’)

“Human Garbage”? “Idiot”? “Jackass”? You seem to take this affair a little too personally. If the keys on your keyboard are sticky, it is probably the accumulation of spittle escaping your clenched teeth as you write.

I stand by my post.

easmachine:

You stated that Blagojevich’s appointment of the underwhelming Burris as cynical and Machiavellian is completely wrong, because that would imply an attempt at political success.  Dead in the water and nothing else to lose, Blagi just wanted to stick it to the Dems because that was all he could do.  all he gained was a transient boner.  Now jobless and going to jail in about 14 months, what the hell else did he have to do?

Burris is an idiot, because he allowed the con man Blogi and that jackass Rush to use him, and every South Side resident as they’re fools. The Congressman looked positively anachronistic whining about “lynching” and the other BS, while black boys in his district can read and write, and black children, in his district, can’t go outside and play safely.  What human-garbage he is!  As for Burris’ ambition, maybe he should have stayed home because he looks awfully out matched to the situation, unlike those white politicians you claim he’s equal to.  No black person should wait for the day when black politicians can be “just as crooked” as whites, progress is measured in how much they can get away with; THAT’S JUST SILLY.

Black voters are as unsophisticated as everyone else, Easmachine…no difference there, right?  Well, no one can afford the wasted time and energy dealing with dumb-asses like Burris and who proves himself a nation joke. No, blacks are not worst or better than any other group of voters.but we’ve very little for error; errors in which you are all too willing to except.

Finally, the “white-supremacist” posture explains nothing. Without addressing the question, you simply claim that bad decisions objectively assessed is racist, just because you don’t like the truth let alone deal with it.

The Senate now and throughout its history manifests a complicated, twisted and somewhat risque genealogy of political pedigrees. I suggest, drop this, and soon an election will decide the issue.

FOREVER BURRIS

There are many calls for the resignation of Roland Burris, the Illinois Senator appointed by Governor Rod Blagojevich, after his arrest but before his impeachment.

But such a resignation is doubtful. Remember how persistent Burris was when practically everyone opposed his taking the seat in the Senate? He persisted and no one could find a legal way to stop him. So now the Democrats sorely need his vote in the coming months and would do well to keep him there until the 2010 election, which he will probably either skip or lose in the primary.

A new appointment now by the current Illinois Governor would be problematic. I won’t comment on opinions that the next Senator there should be black, since when it comes to discussing race I am a coward.

I agree with you assessment regarding the principles of standards, PurpleGirl, when I come to affirmative action, but really, do we know what it truly is.

The coward thing, I’m assuming you’re referring to the Holder comments about race and America’s reluctance to discuss it, I feel was just childish on behalf of the AG.  Poor use of language, typical of a Clintonian lackey and public servant scared in someway by racism, big or small, and a heightened, idealized sense of justice is only part of the problem.  Mr Holder, like most black elites live by the swooning songs of the sixties, put drowns in the wake of its end with Dr. King’s death and the vacuum which has yet to be filled.

Some tried with the “Black Power” movement, the Jackson’s and the Young’s and the Bond’s.  We tried with the QUASI-INTELLECTUAL black elites, hold-up in a corner of Ivy-Leagues outhouses, trying to quantify busing and forced integration and with their on head in the Ebony-toilet, forgot about the 3 generations lost to the futile attempts with were for not.

Forget a national discussion about race! They must occur in small scale settings. Five black people cannot have this discussion with 148 million white Americans.  Why?  As AG Holder has shown, the idiotic statement stales the process, wounds the sensitive natures of those meant to help and raises the ire of those trying to understand.

This can be more a “nation” conversation as can black be lead by one or an oligarchy of black elites.  Mr. Holder has shown that even though they may be smart, they are neither intellectual nor eloquent enough to represent every black person on the grid.  Mr Obama’s Philadelphia speech is the new paradigm, a thesis map of how to set the table in future discussion.  But they must be intimate and among blacks first, then exercised in the same proportion between the races and finally, used to remove the poorest of black leadership…(or should I say)....appointed black overseers from on high and across the continent, and emphasize small and localized leaders who must be held accountable and produce.

Eric Holder is an idiot and should be impeach because he should know better; or he has his own plans to destroy the little progress we have.

If you fell for the Governor’s selection of Burris as anything other than a cynical racial appeal, then you are too naive to write responsibly on political matters. If you assume that Black Voters support underqualified aspirants simply because of color, then you are parroting a white supremacist libel that has been cycled and recycled since reconstruction.

Blaming Burris for aspiring to higher office is foolishness. All politicians are ambitious and to single Burris out is to ignore the ambitions of a legion of others who craved consideration for Obama’s seat.

When will political commentators stop characterizing bloc voters as politically unsophisticated when much of their social, political and economic progress has come as a result of the sensible leveraging of their vote? It is patronizing to assume political disappointment in the failings of Black elected officials over the last few decades when white ones have disappointed us for centuries.

Are there men and women who would make better Senators than Burris? Certainly. Was the Governor cynical and machiavllian with his selection? Of Course. Is this newsworthy to the average citizen? Not really.

The fault also lies with whites who indulge this sort of thing; the Senate Democrats caved and gave Burris the seat.  Now, it could cost Obama and the Democrats big if they cannot hold the seat in the next election.

This is by far that worst play-acting I have ever seen.
Rod Blagojevich, may he rest in prison, deserves the punishment that he gets, for taking the politics of Chicago to the state capitol, Springfield.
In that same vein, Roland Burris, plays an amazingly large part, he of no standing, who was appointed by an about to be removed Governor of Illinois.
By playing the race card, these men and others have fallen into the trap of the past, whereby, one justifies a position by the colour of ones skin and their ethnicity.
Now to the crux of the real problem, ApprxAm, your diatribe on the “illiterate preachers” of Chicago is just the kind of comment that a person who does not know these fine men, would make. There might be some illiterate men and women as preachers in Chicago, but I can assure you that the majority of these fine men and women, are beyond the capabilities of most Americans. They have educated themselves to the nth degree and are well-spoken and literate.
Your denigration of a whole cities preachers based upon the colour of their skin is just the kind of comment that inspires and continues to inspire racist
hatred and class warfare.
Purple Girl, you are spot on in your analysis of the situation. Whits Anglo Saxon Protestant men, have for
too long lowered the bar or removed the bar, for those they thought incapable of meeting certain standards.  The WASP power structure has not only left out women, but men and women of colour, and Catholics and those deemed unworthy of their status.
It is high time that the WASP power structure be brought down, this will be done by removing the Federal Reserve System, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
These institutions are the brainchildren of the early
1900’s robber barons, who started the Central bank and other institutions that led to their regaining power and sustaining their power in the face of 2 World Wars, and other atrocities committed by those that these men have financed throughout the years.
Bringing down these power structures will only happen
if and only if, we the people demand that the Constitution be followed and the Gold and Silver standards be brought back into existence.
Then the people will retain their earning power and the false governments that have been instituted will fall by the way side and people, common people will once again retain the power of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the power of electing the governance structure.

It’s not that we are really cowards, it’s just the media doesn’t allow real dialogue.
As a Female I am outraged when a male offers to ‘lower the bar’ for me. It implies I am uncapable of ‘jumping it’ without theri assistance. Worse yet are Woman who expect the ‘bar to be lowered’- Sexist Traitors to the real Womens equality movement.
What the Racist message being sent is that Burris can’t be held responsible for his own actions- ‘morally deficit’, so we must turn a blind eye to his ‘pay to play’ participation. It also implies he would have been unable to achieve Seantor status if it had not been for the ‘kindness’ of Blago and the Senate. Maybe he could, Maybe he couldn’t- we’ll never know since they lowered the bar, and he asked (and is still asking) them too.
Sexism and Racism are not only commited when barring someone from competing, but also when they are allowed an Uneven playing field to ‘win’
As afemale who has worked in male dominated fields- I reject any ‘bar lowering’, and in fact encourage them to raise it. I can’t make the jump- then oh well. But if I clear it with room to spare, I not only proved I’m worthy, but a ‘contender’ they had better sharpen their tools to compete against. Affirmative action will continue to be required until the question ‘do you need a hand’ does not even cross the mind of the Judges. Not so much that we require or request such special consideration-it’s a way to combat their desire to devalue or belittle Us by offering.More a tool of Re programming the ‘Judges’, then giving Us an unfair advantage.Don’t offer to let me play ‘slop’ if that is not the rules of the game- it’s offensive (sexist or racist)

Blog-Joke-An-Itch used to one-track minds of Bobby Rush and the barely literate “preachers” of Chicago to push the tenuous appointment of an unprepared and under-intelligent man to represent the concerns of Chicago’s poor black citizens.  Rush’s use of lynching is most disturbing considering that this state has elected two Afro-Americans as their statewide representatives in Washington over the past decade. How dare he!!!

These are the same leaders who presided over the greatest down-fall of black wellness since the failure of reconstruction. Men (mostly) without a clue on how to lead.  Detroit got rid of Kwame Kilpatrick; Newark, Sharpe James; and Philadelphia, John Street…...LOSERS in ever sense of the word. Let’s remember, Chicago’s South side continues to support Rush and follows his and other ignorant bible pimps; men of the word, who can hardly read themselves.

Come on Chicago, get with the New Black Program of higher leadership in which service is demanded, results are needed and accountability is required. Chuck the “Storefront” preaching preachers and aging Black Panthers and move into the 21st century.  DC, Newark and eventually Philadelphia are showing us the way. No more should we allow men like these to use our history, and current state of suffering, to advance there own agenda; which includes no of us.

Pretty damn poor symbol. Blog-Boy-lie-bitch put the screws to the state democrat party and Burris fell for it and now his ass is going to be removed, making him the latest of political and cultural jokes.

Substance requires an external view of one’s self, and it appears the Mr. Burris lacks even the most common-sense of self awareness.  This cat belongs on NBC’s The Office, sitting next to Steve Carrell.

Yeah, no substance because he doesn’t get it!
