Let the Limbaughs WhinePosted on Jan 29, 2009By Joe Conason How fortunate for Barack Obama that Rush Limbaugh, big radio personality and leader of the instinctual far right, has yet to retire to a sunny island with his bottles of pills. At a moment when Republicans on Capitol Hill feel they must pretend to negotiate with the popular new president over spending to revive the economy, he blurted out what they really feel. Speaking on his daily broadcast and later on Fox News about the president’s prospects, Limbaugh said forthrightly, “I hope he fails.” With those words, he turned his ample silhouette into the rhetorical target of choice for Obama, who warned the Republican leadership that they “can’t listen to Rush Limbaugh” and expect to accomplish anything useful. Hoping to preserve the spirit of bipartisan good will that attended his inauguration, the president is offering politicians on the other side of the aisle a stark choice. They can work with him or they can join the radio extremist who wants him to fail—and could not care less about the consequences for America. As always, Limbaugh articulates his opposition to the stimulus plan in the ideological jargon favored by his party. Evidently he fears that if the United States spends more money on highways, railroads and modernizing our electrical grid, we will shortly come to resemble the old Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China or even Cuba. Improving schools and expanding health coverage is just more “socialism”—and why would any right-thinking Republican hope for that to succeed? But while he flatters himself as a “thinker,” the sad fact is that Limbaugh often sounds as if he’s motivated more by resentment than philosophy. During an interview on Fox with his soul mate, Sean Hannity, he revealed that in this time of national distress he is obsessing over an old grudge. Advertisement In reality, the Democrats displayed little appetite for obstructing George W. Bush, who lost the popular vote but got his way on tax cuts in the summer of 2001. The Democratic congressional leaders and the entire country rallied to the side of the president after 9/11—and the Democrats were rewarded with savage assaults on their patriotism in the following year’s midterm election. Even now, Limbaugh remains deaf to the bipartisan appeals of the Obama White House, which has tried, perhaps too hard, to change the tone in Washington. “I never hear Democrats talking about walking across the aisle,” he complained to Hannity. “I never see any of them praise each other or brag about the fact that they do it. They brag about the Republicans that they destroy.” What all this inane ranting proves is how remote Rush and his imitators are from the urgent concerns of the American public, including not only Democrats and independents but a growing number of Republicans, too. According to current polling data, the Limbaugh line is potentially perilous for any politician outside a firmly right-leaning district. As thousands of jobs disappear every week, as the security and aspirations of millions of families evaporate, most Americans hope fervently that the Obama stimulus plan will succeed. They hear nothing from the Republicans except demands for new tax breaks that will chiefly benefit the same privileged people who have made out so well during the past few decades—and who now take taxpayer money and spend millions on private jets and fancy office furniture. When President Obama considers how much of his stimulus spending to apportion to tax cuts in a vain attempt to appease the opposition, he ought to remember how Limbaugh described the hidden attitude of Republican leaders. “I know what our [GOP] strategy is. They’re hoping he fails, so that they can go back and say, ‘We wanted him to succeed. We gave it everything we got. We worked with him, but. …’ ” So perhaps the best course is not to worry too much about winning Republican votes in the Senate or about what they’re saying on talk radio, but to simply do what will work best for the country—and let the Limbaughs whine on, as they always do. James , entitled to what ? A decent wage , healtcare , retirement , safe working conditions . It’s called a civilized society dude, it’s how we chose to organize our country . I’m not sure what you mean ” staggering out of their morass ” , the mess we"re and they’re in was caused by unbridled , unregulated capitalism , not socialism . Our unemployeement is probably around 15% or higher , it’s hard to tell since the drooling dumbass ( reagan ) changed the way we compile the numbers , but I can guarentee it’s higher than 12% . Those awful socialist countries you refer to at least have health care and a social safety net and I have neither heard or read nothing about them clammering to imitate our greed based mess . If you can pull yourself out of your conservative fog for an instant you may realize that the world wide meltdown was caused by us , not some socialist boogyman . The only country that is moving away from their social contract is Sweden and that’s because of the way they form their government . Whait until their next election and see if that sticks , I seriously doubt it will .

Browalt , “the spectre of adding millions more unionized do-nothings will not be helpful ” , what exactly does that mean ? I suppose you’d rather have well born wonderkins like , oh , say the bush family dictate how workers are treated . You do realize that the union movement is what created the middle class ? But with a statement like that I seriously doubt if you realize much of anything . So you believe that having the working class who actually make this country great band together as a unit so they can stand up to would be astrocrats is a bad thing ? I don’t know what you do or how much you make , but you can bet that unless you’re a minumum wage bubba in the bible belt living in a trailer you owe a lot to those lazy union organizers and their members . I would guess you have no problem with management working together to drive down wages and worker protections , yet you diminish those who fight for working americans rights , fair wages and working conditions . You might want to study the history of the labor movement and what it was like before it took hold . I would suggest ” The Jungle ” by Upton Sinclair , that might give you a clue , or maybe not . Ignorant statements such as yours make me fear that we may indeed be heading back to the glorious 1880’s to 1930’s era . I hope you enjoy watching your children and grandchildren working 12 to 16 hour days six or seven days a week for slave wages . That’s exactly where that type of mentality and ignorance of history will lead . You seem to be the poster child for what happens when the public education system is allowed to erode and one gets his historical perspective from the likes of limbaugh or shawn hannity .

The plain and simple truth is that the BIG FIX is in! We the people have allowed ourselves to become distracted by bread and circuses. The plain and simple hard truth is that the world is already swimming in US dollars, and it has so far only made the whole situation worse. Hyperinflation in the double digits is not a minute possibility-IT IS A LEAD PIPE CINCH ! I just hope and pray that when it hits in three or four years, I will be in a position to survive in Mugabe-ized America. One point is absolutely certain the dollar will not survive long.
Spending money on infrastructure is something we should have been doing for the last 40 years. But having worked for the US government, the spectre of adding millions more unionized do-nothings will not be helpful. Cutting the military by a half to two-thirds in order to finance the whole shebang, will only serve to entice the folks that we owe trillions to to say to themselves, “Golly why don’t we just foreclose and get rich quick!”

Republican governors favor H.R.1. Not surprising. I’m reading the bill now, and now I see how easy it was for Republicans to attack it. Pork, right? Well, you can call it that or you can call it spending on infrastructure. New IT system for some departments, loans for agricultural research, grants for rural broadband, upgrading park service structures, grants for local law enforcement, and on and on. Strictly specified limits on how little is allowed for “administration”. The money must be used to create work and jobs. It must get down to the middle class and fast.
Report thisNo wonder Republicans hate it.
Frankly, I’m surprised at how a good a bill it is. I’m a little surprised that the media is totally skipping all specifics about the bill—even the $4 billion for our fighting men and women. But if governors don’t want the cash, then I guess Democrats should just target the Democratic states. No sense forcing pork on the Republicans if they don’t want it. Besides if we target the Democratic states that would help the majority of people, right?

I am pleased to see that the non-partisan opposition to this idiotic “solution” has some to bite Obama on the as*. If any of you self-described intellectuals had actually read this tome to pork, you would have joined the democrats in congress who joined with republicans to call this crapola what it was. In spite of this non-partisan rejection of a bad bill, Pelosi and her clueless sheep passed it in a particularly partisan manner. Now, it is Obama’s folly. When it fails, and it will, he won’t be able to blame anyone else. This stupid bill weakens America, turns free men into surfs, and will drive out the remainder of job-making businesses to foreign shores. (But I am sure you jerks will find a way to blame it on Bush. That’s the liberal mantra.) And when the terrorists are released into the general population because they weren’t mirandised on the battlefield, I hope they end up in your neighborhoods. And when the mayhem starts you will realized that not one penny of this trillion dollar debacle was directed at national security, maybe you can call in Code Pink to the rescue. When he started in 1988 he equally bashed both sides of the political spectrum until he found a conservative base that would stick to him and visit his sponsors… Snapple being the first biggie.
Where is Snapple now?
How much money does that “conservative” need, anyway? I see he is still hawking his t shirts, coffee mugs and subscriptions to his newsletter and charging people to be insiders. Is he hoping to encourage NEW listeners… hell, no. He is appealing to that one per cent far right extremist sheep mentality of about 3,000,000 people. Of course, that figure, 1% also represents the top wealth holders in this country, too, who need to protect their exploitation of our unregulated economic system.
After listening to Rush for 20 years, I can’t believe anyone could stand to listen to Sean Hannity or Mark Levine. I think their job is to make Rush not sound quite so extremist.

I meant understanding, not knowledge. Sometimes that goes very deep into our spirit.
You allude to a very good point: I believe it was Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes who said the Constitution is not a suicide pact. That’s very true and we DO limit free speech accordingly. Two clear-cut examples that have been held up in Court:
1) You can’t cry “FIRE!” in a crowded theater if there isn’t one. Sure, it’s a “limit” on your free speech, but you don’t have the right to incite people into a deadly panic.
2) You cannot threaten to take someone’s life or assault them to do physical harm. Yes, we do allow for the figures of speech “If you don’t cut that out I’m gonna beat you up.” But actual real threats and calls for people to attack or murder someone are NOT protected speech. So I can’t publish in the paper that I’m going to kill someone on such and such a date because he stole my girlfriend.
But a Rush Limbaugh? Let ‘em rant! He’s now his own worst enemy and I STILL say laughter is the best weapon against a jackass like him.

Ah, Fadel! How many years have you lived here and you still understand NOTHING about America?
=======================================
Well Inherit! I made my point of opinion and you made yours and my opinion is as valid as yours! As to your wild statement about me still understanding NOTHING about America, I feel sorry to tell you that your usage of the word “NOTHING” is out of context.
May I tell you that I knew a great deal about America, before my fate brought me here more than 30 years ago! I can claim that my knowledge about America, even when I was in meddle school, was much superior than the average American. By middle school I had studied a great deal about the history, geography and political system of America. In fact, though I hate to brag, I now know much more about America than 95% of Americans. To your surprise, I knew so much about America to the point that I predicted the 9/11 tragedy and the economic collapse of the country I call home now. Mine was an insight that went beyond mere academic knowledge to a deep analysis of causes and effects of history.
Now, going back to the issue that prompted your comment, may I remind you, knowing where you come from, that the Holocaust started with a an intensive ugly campaign of hate and propaganda speech against Jews, not unlike the hate speech of Limbaugh and his elk. The difference between you and me is that you’re willing to risk the prospect of a second holocaust, mini or more, in the name of the unregulated free speech, whereas I am willing to forgo some of my personal freedom as a preventive measure against hate speech that might, and normally does, lead to greater evil.
Thank you for expressing your disagreement with me, albeit in less friendly manner than I expected, especially after I apologized to you for a previous unpleasant exchange, and our agreement to disagree without being disagreeable!

The funny thing about Limbaugh—the “voice” of the Republican Party—is that he’s not only taking down America, but also Christianity. Sometimes I think he’s the anti-christ, though that sounds far too dramatic.
Report thisLimbaugh is an entertainer without values, engaged in a brilliant marketing strategy. Start by creating an advertiser-friendly atmosphere. Proclaim yourself pro-America, pro-religion, pro-business, pro-good, pro-virtue, pro-pro. Now, fill with curious people. How?
Brilliantly question, spin, and attack the core values of America. The real pro stuff. Good is really bad. Bad is really good. Success is failure. Down is actually up. What you think is correct isn’t correct and he knows because he’s dedicated to being correct.
Oh my gosh! You think. You really must tune in. Give him six weeks so you’ll understand him. First impressions are bad, unless yours are good. Voila. Dollar bills!
The problem is this. Limbaugh sacrifices spirit. In his universe of perpetual spin, there can be no understanding of anything eternal. Rootedness is antithetical to spin. For Limbaugh, God serves no purpose. The image of God that He put in us at creation is His spirit.
America was founded by freedom-starved people who held different opinions but sincerely worked at unity. Lacking broad educational systems, they educated each other in a participatory type of knowledge sharing. Farmers sharing tips. A spirit that is fertile ground for Limbaugh. All that building of unity leaves many pieces to be dismantled. Do gooders, bah. Limbaugh feels he only needs to take a small chuck of the American enterprise. Mostly America will remain whole. (Only 1 in 10 people or fewer pay any attention to him after all.) And anyways America, like Mother Nature, will heal itself from his small destructiveness. He believes that. Yes, a great marketing plan.
Anyone can play. And many are. Unfortunately, more will. This society turns attention into money, and attention is gained by anti-spiritual behavior. Christ’s teachings—you know, like the time he ran into a church and began whipping the people in the front row and said the poor suckers in the back pews were the ones going to heaven, because it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle?—these teachings of Christ will become obscured by the vitriolic drip of rootless spinmeisters, endlessly spinning—oh, Rush isn’t anything at all like this!—always brushing past principle, never settling on truth. Spirited, but lacking a holy spirit.

Who did Karl Rove go to first upon leaving his post as political advisor to Dubya? Yep, Rush buddy! Having listened to Rush for the past eight years on and off, it would be hard for me to do anything but aver that he was a de facto spokesman for the neo-cons and perhaps even for the Office of the Vice-President, who was clearly running the most evil parts of the administration.

Report thisThey are, so why is it we spend so much time talking about them? Are you that afraid they are going to cause harm to your beliefs whether they be political or other. Why is it that nothing is said by the other side about the Air America’s of the world? Because the only way they become effective is when you worry about them and talk about them.

Rush and others of his ilk, like Ann Coulter, are desperately trying to circle the wagons and rally their diminished forces. They’re still smarting from the ass-kicking they got in November, and they’re licking their wounds. It’s like watching the final agonizing moments of a dinosaur sinking into a tar-pit.
Report thisI agree that the best way to deal with them is to marginalize and lampoon them. It’s far better than any censorship.

Actually I think Limbaugh wins here. The admin is already overplaying it’s hand with the pork bill and wanting to throw bankers “in the brig”. Meanwhile, Limbaugh gets the best publicity he could have ever asked for. If he were ignored he’d disappear, but he’s now on the news before and after he airs each day. In the meantime, there are still plenty of people who think government dictating pay while doling out pork left and right is bad - and foolish economics as well.

Well folks the way I see it we have two choices. Since ther are millions like me that would rather fight and die than live in a world run by the likes of you, and millions of you who will fight and die to not live in a world run by us, we can either have a reasonable discussion of how to effect dissolution of these united states…... or we can fight it out like last time. Yes there would be issues of migration once territorial boundrys were decided, and probably some argument over resources, and things like exchanges of non-movable assets between those leaving the socialist zone for the free zone and vice versa, but it may be better than the strait up fight that will eventually result if we do nothing. Maybe not today or this year, but not long from now it will happen. OUR choice, lets do something.

Rush Limbaugh needs to fan the fires of hatred and intolerance - it’s how he makes a living. Like others in talk radio - they have a vested interest in making sure things get worse and worse. The best way to boost their ratings and *personal fortunes* is by working to prevent any good ideas from succeeding.
Its a classic conflict of interest situation. The more we fail, the more we hate, the richer he gets.

Let me put it this way:
“A society that allows such hateful devilish fascists, such as Limbaugh, to be players and having false propaganda forums, even in the name of freedom of speech, is indeed a sick and unhealthy society that is sowing the seeds of fascism, which its members are bound one day to have a taste of the bitter medicine those fascists prescribe! A civilized society must have clear rules about what’s legitimate freedom of speech issues and what’s destructive evil propaganda inciting hate and promoting falsehoods!”
*********************************************
Ah, Fadel! How many years have you lived here and you still understand NOTHING about America?
We understand, as you do not, that the BEST way to shut Rush Limbaugh up is to laugh at him and marginalize him. Everytime he opens up his yap be sure to remind America that he got fired from Monday Night Football for a racist remark. He made fun of Michael J. Fox’s twitches from Parkinson’s.
President Obama is able to make a useful tool out of Limbaugh to both marginalize Limbaugh further and to use him as a club over the heads of Re-Thug-licans and they fell into the trap like mice into cheese.
No, in America, the WORST thing you can do is use the Law to shut someone like Limbaugh up. Then he becomes a martyr and a symbol and a hero. Far better to use “market forces” to move him outside “The Pale” and let him rant to a diminishing audience.
Freedom of Speech is more precious to Americans than you realize. There are few legitimate reasons to shut it down, like calling for physical attacks on specific people and posting their home addresses and phone number. But being an obnoxious, racist, inevitably-wrong, lying right-wing buffoon? Let him rant! He makes a GREAT target for attacking the GOP. Why take that away?

So none of the Republicans don’t want the stimulus, just like Limbaugh says? Fine. I’m sure someone can make arrangements so that their districts don’t receive the funds. Let’s see how their constituents feel about that.

In the grand scheme of things, we the people, must remember that Rush Limbaugh and his ilk are nothing more than comedians in pundit’s clothing.
Report thisRush Limbaugh the self-appointed “Dr. of Democracy,” can and should retire to that sunny island with his pills, the ones that have made him deaf to the sounds of true Americans, losing their jobs, losing their homes and lives, in countless numbers on the altar of “laizzes-faire” capitalism.
Of course for Rush Limbaugh, there is no recession or depression, he makes $50 Million, over the next 5 years for something that anyone can do with their eyes closed.
We of the left, progressives all, must remember that a sense of humor is important when dealing with the “ever so serious” and bombastic Far Right Wing Nuts of the Grand Orgy Party.
Rush Limbaugh is a dinosaur, a thing, that belongs in
the past, to an age when the Repugs, held sway over the country and could do anything they wanted. Yet look where we are now, the economy is free-falling, the job market is shit, we are losing homed people by the thousands every day and more than that the Wall Street Thugs, those gang of thieves, are taking more money from the public coffer, and stealing it away for their bonuses and stock dividends.
Free Market Capitalism, HuH? If true free market capitalism reigned in this country, then Bear Stearns, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and all the other little toadies with their tongues and hands out
for the public’s money would have been long gone.
It is high time that we the people, demand that they either commit to total free market capitalism or get off the idea that they are the arbiters of public policy.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. While we on the true left laugh at Limbaugh and others of his ilk, they still have an incredibly large and loyal following feeding daily from there chum bucket of hate. They have the power to drag us all down, if we let them.
These Nazis are on the run. They sense the shift in power, and now they may be ever louder and more dangerous than ever.
We all know that Limbaugh, Hannity, and O’reilly are idiots, but millions of americans look to them daily as oracles.

Limbaugh wasn’t upset when brain dead W sent pallets of money into Iraq, much of which ended up in Swiss accounts.
Bush only vetoed one spending bill in his eight years. He racked up trillions in debt. He got us into two wars that have resulted in millions of Iraqis being either killed, wounded or displaced. Almost 4000 Amercian soldiers have been killed to date, much of which was unnoticed because the neocons didn’t want the US population to see the horror we created in the middle east…and Limbugh went on a rampage when it was reported that Clinton had an affair with Monica.
He has selective outrage.

As long as neo-cons have a term “RINO” they will never succeed. The American public increasing sees the GOP vilify anyone who isn’t a lockstep neo-con and they find they don’t identify the the politics the neo-cons do espouse. Who cares about gay marriage when millions are out of work? Let them keep on marching, I say, then we can get some real conservatives back in office-you know, the ones who really believe in small, fiscally responsible government that stays out of people’s personal lives and doesn’t have a dominionist attitude about the rest of the planet

Oh PLEASE Listen to Rush and Sarah. In fact nominate them as your ticket for ‘12!!!
Report thisHaving Volunteered for the Obama campaign it was difficult to combat the OLD image of McCain. It was a matter of updating republicans on what the ‘latest’ version was saying. Even harder was combating the ‘Hero’ worship.
What a cake walk it will be in ‘12- “Want a Drug addict and a woman who waited 8 hours to seek medical attention for her Down syndrome baby so she could give a speech and fly, then drive, back to Wassila?”
Making Rush and Sarah the ‘leaders’ of the Repugs is as outrageous (and insulting) as naming Timothy Leary and The PETA Gal as leaders of the Dems!
Most Americans Know Rush is ‘Master of his own domain’ with On Air access. Do repugs really want to be considered the Circle Jerk Party?Just about as laughable is Boehner, Canter, Corker and McConnel.
As a Dem, I actaully worry such Republicans like Crist or Snow will move up the ranks. But then again seeing who they are considering for RNC Chair, I have little concerns that they could even make their party competitive again.
The Repugs have got to stop getting their drug supply from Rush, it not only effecting their minds, but inducing heart failure-it’s fatal.

Limbaugh is playing right into the Democrats’ hands. He is driving the base further and further to the right and isolating that group from the main stream. The Republicans can only regain power by appealing to a borader cross secliction of the public, not by isolating them.
