Just How Dumb Are White Males?

Posted on Oct 28, 2008

Two thumbs up: Sen. John McCain campaigns at Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pa., on Oct. 21.

By Robert Scheer

Let me now defend white males. We can’t possibly be as dumb as the polls showing we are John McCain’s most reliable voting base would indicate. Do we white men believe for an instant that a vote for McCain would not represent more of President Bush’s failed economic policies at home and costly military adventures abroad? If we don’t hold such a belief, why are a majority of us expected to vote against the positive change that Barack Obama so clearly represents?

Square, Story page, 2nd paragraph, mobile
Most of us know how to read, and can even Google, so why would we think that GOP candidate McCain, who has supported Bush on every one of his economic initiatives, is now the anti-Bush? What exactly did McCain mean when he said, referring to his Democratic opponent during a campaign speech in Ohio on Monday, “We both disagree with President Bush on economic policy”?

Is McCain unaware that he consistently voted for the red ink run up by the Bush administration, or was he having a senior moment when he said that same day, “We cannot spend the next four years as we spent much of the last eight: spending ourselves into a ditch, and hoping that the consequences don’t come”?

The only time McCain took issue with Bush’s economic policy was in his short-lived criticism of the tax cut for the rich—a strategy he now defends. But if McCain doesn’t increase taxes for someone, just how does he plan to pay for the enormous Iraq war debt, now vastly compounded by the banking bailout? On Monday McCain gave his answer: “I will freeze government spending on all but the most important programs, like defense, veterans’ care, Social Security and health care, until we scrub every single government program and get rid of the ones that aren’t working for the American people.”

Is he kidding? If he doesn’t curtail those programs, which make up almost the entire federal budget, then he’s talking about chump change in possible cuts. There just isn’t enough money in those earmarks that McCain goes on about to make a dent in the massive national debt.

Square, Site wide, Desktop

Square, Site wide, Mobile
President Bush’s treasury secretary, Henry Paulson, left our collective credit card on Wall Street, where the bankers are once again to be trusted to regulate themselves. Are there any white males out there still so in the dark that they don’t know that the radical banking deregulation legislation that McCain pushed so aggressively is what legally enabled those he condemned on Monday as “the Wall Street bankers and brokers who got us into this mess”? Have they never heard of Phil Gramm, the man McCain picked to co-chair his presidential campaign, who sponsored the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the Commodity Futures Modernization Act—both of which made legal, for the first time since the Great Depression, the credit swaps and hybrid instruments at the heart of the Wall Street scams?

Call me naive, but I think white males, startled by job cuts and the devastation wreaked upon their retirement savings, are finally getting the point: Someone’s got to pay for this mess, and better those who got rich off the stock market theft than the rest of us.

Can you imagine the uproar now if the McCain-Bush plan to privatize Social Security by linking it to stock purchases had become law? And have you noticed that the Wall Street crooks are not using the bailout money to ease credit but rather to line their golden parachutes? They know how to take care of their retirement.

I don’t think McCain gets that the rest of us could use a bit more lift from the government safety net. That’s the same federal support that GM CEO Rick Wagoner asked about when he went, hat in hand, to Washington on Monday to lobby for a $10-billion gift to keep his company out of bankruptcy. Or is the CEO of GM just another tax-and-spend socialist?

Some studies have stated conservatism is inherited, while religion is done by osmosis or association.  Again one falls into the stereotyping trap.  Lumping and generalizing all white men is the same as using the N word, both derogatory and a demonizing convenience’s used to divide.  Fear and hate the foundations.

People who vote Gop are not dumb or morons.  They vote for Gops for the same reason that people vote for Dems.  They inherited their partisan worldview from the parents, like their religion.  We all did to a greater or lesser extent.  A person must be seen in her own historical context to make a judgement of stupidity in formulating their life’s aims.

White men tend to vote Gop largely because they’re racist and bigoted, which has been incorporated in their sense of masculinity.  Racism has been the ideological glue that has largely held the US together, allowing the ruling class to bond with the White population across class boundaries.

But it is highly uneducated to say so.  This is not what we teach our kids in school.  The US Constitution does not state that ALL WHITE PERSONS ARE CREATED EQUAL, although that is what was implied.  The slaughter of the Indians, the enslaving of the African-Americans, the stealing of Mexico from the Latinos, the imprisoning of the Japanese, the War against Muslims, the Zionist oppression of the Palestinians, all reinforce American racism which dare not speak its name in general terms.

This will be continued in a few months under the Black face of our new president, just as the War on Terrorism was conducted under Powell and Rice.  But emotional racism is quite different than intellectual stupidity.  But moral evil in never applied to murderous American power or to the population who support it.  These are considered, mistakes, errors, incompetence.  Or stupidity.

Titenbite and Dumb white guys,

Anytime we fall into using the divisive trap of stereotypes to judge someone, we become the bigots we so dislike. Using the word bigot requires depth and research when defining.  Some people may believe stereotypes and bigots are the same. Words like white trash, redneck, trailer trash, used to describe people or any number of names to describe other groups of people is used as a divisive tool for conjuring up emotions in a non-thinking individuals.

Looking at this election,  we see the constant attack on individuals by the Republicans, always trying to destroy the opposing guy with personal attacks, usually with blatant lies.  We say attackes coming from bush in the last election and what did we get in the Whitehouse, a pathological liar.  We have the same negative hate and lies being sponsored by the Mormon Church and other religions against prop 8 in California. (So much for the separation of church and state),  Dole using lies against her Democratic rival, calling her godless?  It goes on and on, if we continue to vote for liars, it seems to me our Congress and Senate will be full of liars.

Titenbite, you post addressing the cornucopia of lies by the media types, is refreshing, especially coming from a fellow dumb white guy.  Remember, being the brightest bulb on the tree means little, if the light is never goes on.

I have to agree with louise she hit the white nail right on the head it’s all about the big “D” and if the voting public continues to dumb down their own research into a candidate we’re in real deep also since those white males are typically weded to a white female you have the majority of registered voters getting their facts about those running from the likes of drug addict Rush Limbag and pathological liar Shaun Hannity with this tag team of mediocraty and status quo those listening are getting an earful of hate and lies on a daily bases. In the future we can expect this to only get worse. The day media personalities start telling their listeners to focus on their opinions only is right around the corner only those unpatriotic would get their facts anywhere else will be their cry.Alas do not dispare because this gun tote’in,fish catch’in,boar hunt’in,barbaque’in,redneck white male is sick of being fed lies and all my friends feel the same as me so do my four children three of whom vote and they’ve learned to see the truth by finding it themselves not taking some idiots word for it.They are not fooled by false claims and phony associations nor do we hate for the sake of hating because we have facts that trump hate.We are not Hypachristians(hypacrit christians). We do not hate those who do not share our religious beliefs.Killing is always killing and my beliefs say thats wrong as wrong as judging a man by his color and not by his deeds.Yes dumb is what we need to avoid at all cost. While those who follow without question into despair,we must strive to educate.Stop those who continue to assault our constitutionally protected education system. I think white males would be just as stupid for voting Obama. Actually, maybe it’s not stupidity, maybe it’s the fact that white males have - for a long time now - all the power. Electing McCain would ensure that we keep it, electing Obama would pretty much ensure that we keep it, however electing a third party (in the right direction) would mean giving up some of this power. This is unacceptable.

Here’s what the dumb white male cannot stand: that, after eight years of whiny, p1ssy complaints that Democrats are just “bashing the PRESIDENT” and that those who criticize Bush disrespect the “office of the PRESIDENT, the PRESIDENT, he’s the PRESIDENT, you must respect the PRESIDENT,” it may soon be incumbent on them to walk the walk of “respecting the office of the President of the United States, duly elected according to the laws of the land”—even if he’s a black man.

They cannot stand the thought of looking at a black face on television, a black man with the ability to command the airwaves, a black family in the (gasp!) WHITE House, a black woman as First Lady.

Because that means a black man got there before THEY did, and it chaps their pasty butts raw.

Plus, if they accept ANYTHING in the way of a tax cut or health coverage or education benefits, it means (to their shrunken little minds) the black man is ABOVE them, handing DOWN benefits, for which they will have to say THANK YOU.

That REALLY sticks in their throat.

So their choice is either refuse all benefits from an Obama administration so that they can say, “took nuthin from nobody, doin it all myself, ain’t gonna take nothing from no BLACK man because if ANYBODY should be up there on that there TV screen and sittin in that there chair it should be ME”—or suck it up and GET OVER THEMSELVES.

Well, that really is the whole point, isn’t it? Especially since our current WH resident is one of their number, a Stupid White Male.

(since I’m not a chest-bumping, howl-like-a-wolf-after-too-many-beers, GOP-voting moron, despite being White and male and possibly stupid, I don’t consider myself a SWM.)

Yeah if Blacks talked about Whites that way they’d probably be dubbed “racist”. Just like they can call each other “n——” but a White cannot.  So?

EVERY President has been a White male, and a bunch have been SWMs (Tyler, Pierce, Buchanan, every Reconstruction Republican after Lincoln, Harding, Coolidge, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush43)

Can’t believe you enlightened TDers are generating all this comment about whether a specific race and gender combination is ... anything at all. Wasn’t there some weird nonscience about bumps on the head or something that was long since discredited? Isn’t this, well, profiling for stupidity? It’s all about the individual. Always.

Did enjoy Inherit the Wind’s piece, however, and remember wondering “Huh?” on hearing Rummy talking about “muscular foreign policy” etc. What I didn’t know was that Cowboy Bush is afraid of horses. Makes sense: horses are highly intuitive about human beings, so he SHOULD be afraid of them.

Only one anecdote on race-gender-related ratings to offer. First time we met my teriffic daughter-in-law-to-be, perched on son’s lap in our living room, my husband asked what she thought about her graduate work and she said she was especially interested in the canon because it wasn’t old, male, pale and stale. Mean husband says “So you don’t like Shakespeare?”

They will still get Obama. Then, they’ll spend the next 4 - 8 years criticizing everything Obama does, including improving the state of the poor and middle class in America.

Pretty dumb.

White males are no more stupid than black males who vote for Marion Berry.  Or black females who vote for Cynthia McKinney.  Or white females who vote for HRC.  Or… well you get my point.

In other words, white males have absolutely no monopoly on idiocy, vanity, crassness, etc., than any other ethnic group.  They just happen to outnumber most of the rest of us, so their influence holds sway and their more stupid decisions have a disproportionate impact.

If conditions where flip-flopped and black males had run this country for 200 years, Scheer would be castigating them instead.  Any suggestion that any single ethnic group or race has some inherent, genetic predisposition to stupidity and hatred is a racist statement unto itself.

If you doubt me, see Africa and the wonderful results of black male rule their for the past 60 years.  If you just looked at Africa, you’d come to some sorry conclusions about the capacity of African males and their ability to be civil, humane and intelligent.

But again… I believe humans’ capacity to be stupid and evil is an unfortunate trait evenly distributed among the global population.

Fadel and Shenonymous,

Clearly, not all white males fall into one of the 3 categories I deliniated… I certainly don’t. There are many like me who are not Wealthy, Evangelical Christians or Rednecks. Some of us are rational, thoughtful, open-minded and not motivated by obsessive material persuits. Unfortunately, Evangelical Christians and Rednecks make up an enormous segment of the “white male” population. And most of them adhere to radical fundamental conservatism.

While the Wealty don’t constitute a large number of the total white male demographic, I would posit that they none-the-less wield the sharpest political sword… Money… and lots of it.

I look forward to the day when intelligence is valued above brawn, when discourse is cherished more than bravado, when logic and reason are regarded higher than dogmatic stoicism. The question is whether or not we will evolve to that point before Darwin’s Rejects joyfully initiate the apocolypse.

Just How Dumb Are White Males? Dumb from the gitgo, and gets dumber incrementally by the decade. They are brainwashed from an early age. They are the Favored Few. With Every Rite of Passage to “responsible adulthood” white males are repeatedly told, either with induction into the Masons, the College Fraternity,or their Bar Mitzvah,  they are conviced that they, “something special.” If you play football, for real or in Ron Reagan’s case, on film, you are even more special. Even if you aren’t a ball player, your icon epitomizing The Definition of what it is to be a Real Man, is the Football Coach. He is the Role Model above all others, father, grandfather, priest or preacher. He is the Character Builder and Mentor not only in all things football, but for all things morally, ethically and correctly that guides us along the pathway of Life and into the realm Heaven and the Pantheon of the Greats who have gone before them: Knuth Rockne, Pop Warner, Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi and perhaps sooner or later, John Madden and Terry Bradshaw. Transpose this Locker Room Wisdom to the current economic situation and we get additional examples of Dumb White Males. The Cheerleaders, those who said the first Bush Plan was as good as it gets.  And then said the next day that the second Bush Plan for correcting capitalism’s lifeblood, credit, was, even better than it is as good as it gets.(Is anyone really listening to what the President says these days and believe that all will be right with the World, as long as he,The Prez, is on the Job?)

Then you have the retired coach, the sage Allan Greenstein. Allan pleads mea culpa in front of the Congressional Committee he was asked to testify before to explain “what happened.” He said we are pretty dumb and couldn’t figure out what was going on; and he made a mistake.  But unkindest cut of all that one can get from your coach after blowing a key play is:” you really messed up royalty, you and the whole damn team. Get down and do 60 pushups.”

Blaming the victim is Grand Cop-Out for football coaches as well as politicians and their lackeys when they really screw up and place the rest of us in harms way be it Iraq or our savings squandered by Big Brains of Banking and the Hedgehoppers of Wall Street. Every explanation of “what went wrong” eventually comes to no admission of guilt, and that the American citizen should exercise their Patriotic Duty, support The Economic Recovery Plan and buy more useless junk whose obsolesce is planned years ahead of time. “Supply side economics is the solution, they claim, if we just sit back and let the market adjust itself.”  Herb Hoover, Ronnie, George I and II, and now McCain, depending what day it is and who he’s talking to, all said and say the same thing as the solution to solve the same problem and crises of the American Economy.  What they don’t admit , ever, is that Supply Side economics to succeed, has to be propped up with “corporate welfare” with its cheats in the form of Bailouts and Big Business CEOs asking for a few extra billions to stave off a “slump in the market” or more to the point, bankruptcy, but keeping golden parachutes for the Captains of Industry if Chapter 11 or 13 becomes necessary.

Yea, behold the Dumb White Male who buys into this folly.

And so it goes, from Sabagio Mauraeno, now standing in line at the voting center in DeKalb County Georgia, for the past 6 hours, and waiting no matter how cold and wet I get, to vote not only for a change but for a better future.

I am not a biologist, nor a geneticist, but (that being the case) can I “not” have an opinion on the pro-life/pro-choice issue? I think that people who “think” can easily see that I “should” have a “voice/opinion” on this subject. It is not a “male” choice that the female “has” the “imposition on her body and soul” on “producing” children. It is an imposition imposed by Mama Nature. This is only a “biological” imposition, as the physical ability lies with the “bearer” of said offspring. But, lest we ignore, the fact that every decision re: termination/full term gestation of any pregnancy is/or, should be those not be made by those people that are directly involved.  No partisan group(s) nor any “outsiders” should be involved in their personal decisions, which try to “intrude” on people’s personal choices (which, most often, are painful and creates a sense of guilt, in varying degrees) for those couples making that extremely hard decision.  When did we, as a people, adopt a philosophy that calls people on their “humanity”? Where are we headed, as a people? When will …..

become part of the “historical “ vernacular?  Labels don’t help. They only foster division. If Americans can finally understand that our best route to the betterment of our society is to, simply, respect the diversity of opinions and beliefs that has made this country what it really is…..we have the opportunity to take that understanding and fix what’s (obviously) broken.
I, sincerely hope/wish (BTW- I don’t pray) that this happens sooner, rather than later.

I am surprised that Robert Scheer uses the phrases “dumb white males” without fear of morality police and language censors jumping at him.

I say this because few days ago, on another thread, I made a comment about the “white trash” who support McCain and openly exhibit all forms of bigotry, racism and ignorance. Despite using the phrase “white trash” inside quotation marks to imply that these are not my words, I was furiously attacked by a “rabble rouser” who insisted that this is rude and inappropriate.

Despite my assuring her that I am a Caucasian (i.e. white) and I believe that every race, color, nationality, religion are capable of producing their own “trash” she became even more furious, going as far as attacking another poster who came to my defense. And the strange of the matter is that this 62-year old from Florida was claiming she is for Obama and that my post would hurt his chances. However, she stopped short of saying that if Obama loses the election she will hold me responsible! This was the most bizarre thing that happened to me lately, and I thought that this woman was a “mole” with special knee-jerk reaction to people with “Arab-Muslim” names who make sense!

Since I am a Caucasian white man, I am wondering under which category of whites I fall according to JFoster2k’s classification!

“White Males” is a huge and diverse demographic. To lump them all into one convenient pile for voter polling is a bit misleading. To just call white males “dumb” is to simplify a complex argument to the point of absurdity. And yes, I’m a white male.

That said, there is no denying the legitimacy of the numbers. I would, however, break “white males” down into a few of the larger subsets in order to clarify who exactly is making the rest of us look so stupid. The following are three of the major factions that comprise the right-wing white male population. While they are not mutually exclusive, categorizing them does help to identify who among us is really to blame.

Christian Evangelicals - The overwhelming majority of these hypcrites will always vote republican. Truth, reason and self-interest play little to no part in their voting. They cannot overcome the religious implication of issues like abortion and gay marriage, thus they cannot vote for a “liberal” without facing the wrath of God.

The Wealthy - This group is motivated almost entirely by self-interest or, more aptly put, greed. Social programs, higher taxes and increased regulation are anathema to wealthy white males. They will inevitably bring their considerable political influence to bear in order to protect their cash flow.

Rednecks - Let’s face it, this is a huge portion of the white male demographic (particularily in the south). They are the ones that “cling to their guns and religion” who typify the “dumb” white males mentioned in this article. They are the Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh fanatics who gobble up the far right’s rhetoric like BBQ pork rinds. They are easily manipulated by the tactics of fear, hate, bigotry and the testosterone-charged male ego.

For many white men it is not a rational thing. It is a testosterone-driven manly thing to vote for a warrior-like non-rational entity. There is no great reasoning, it is an association or image of manliness that draws their vote. You know, brain connected to an object of thrust.

The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act was passed by the Senate, 90-8, and in the House, 365-56 and the Commodity Futures Modernization Act was passed 100
% of all congresspersons without hearings and debate. And Clinton signed both bills.

Clearly congress is responsible, both dems and repubs.

In addition, it was the dems who pushed the subprime mortgages, and Acorn protested in banks for subprime loans to the poor.

And it was mostly republicans who initially voted against the 700 billion dollar bailout.

When they did pass it congress added 20% (150 billion dollars in earmarks )

So, why the one sided comments that Scheer can read people’s minds and know for a scientific fact that McCain will act like Bush, and Obama will represent the poor. He wants to make illegals legal, which depresses wages for that group of Americans.

Nader’s solution is to tax the security transaction 0.1 %. this will return 500 Billion in one year.

This would be a fair tax and have the added benefit of making Wall Street more responsible. They all knew this was going on, so they should pay for it. The reality is that congress bailed out the crooks, and the tax payer pays for it.

It seems that most of the comments I read, are made by dumb people who likewise are not thinking.

“It’s congess, stupid.” Both parties.

Congress takes bribes from lobbyists, and give them a kickback. If any on in business did this they would go to jail.

It is frightening to think that McCain could actually win the presidency. Would he continue with all of the ‘w’ polices? Probably not, but our country can certainly not afford another four years of Republican bs.

Looking back, I am happy that the Republicans chose a ‘w’ clone. I firmly believe that had the Republicans chose another candidate that the presidential race would be a lot closer for the simple, and unfortunate reason of Obama being half Caucasian.

In all likelyhood, next weekend will witness a political cleaning house of Republicans. Hopefully, the Democrats will get the nation back on its feet and not just gloat on its newly won power.

And I know damn well when someone’s trying to manipulate me by trying to play with my self-image about what it means to me to be a man.  That’s because MY self-image is based on the delusion that I’m a rational being, who uses facts and logic, and my basic ethics to reach a decision of whom I am voting for.  And that delusion trumps the delusion that I have to prove to the world that I’m a “manly” man.

Purple Girl and Inherit The Wind give real insight into why American White men are the way we are, one that you will not get in the mainstream media.  We’re not stupid,it turns out, we’re crazy.  Rather, we are stupid BECAUSE we are crazy.  White men identify with masculine power partly as a compensation for the lack of actual politial power in our lives, and this has been used by the Gops to get us to vote against our own self interests.

This may be why racism, or more generally ethnism, is so difficult to extinguish emotionally.  It is bound up with our self image of gender.  Who, for example, gives a fuck if gays get married or not.  Hell, I’m against traditional het marriage, but if that’s what they want to do, who cares?  But this apparently threatens both the gender identity of both males and females, and I have noticed that it is more pronounced in Whites.

So marginal issues like this tend to dominate the election when survival issues are often not even discussed.  More basic identifications, like masculinity and feminity, are intermixed with with race and ethnicity to pervert the worldviews and actions of masses of people.

If a White male thinks he is Tough, as we all tend to do, indeed, must do in a competitive world, then he is Tough on racial minorities and women, those he can or wants to dominate.  And therefore those that he is afraid of, since he knows that they do not want to be dominated.

This largely explains the astonishing, and contra-Marxist phenomenon, of the White working class giving a majority of their votes to Gops since the 1970’s.  And it is why a more general ideology than marxism must be formulated.

There has been a run on automatic machine gun purchases in my town because men are afraid the Democrats will take their guns away from them.  Dumb? or Freudian?  It might be a castration anxiety.  On the otherhand, there are a lot of militiamen in this part of the country and they are by definition dumb, imo.  And there’s nothing to say it can’t be both, dumb and Freudian.

It’s really pretty obvious which white guys are backing John McCain and why.  Have you looked at the pictures accompanying the stories about the stock markets on lately?  All white guys, very frattish, 30-ish to 50-ish.  All with the most to lose if any taxation policies even remotely approaching fair are put into place.

The other white guys- the NASCAR/Gun Show/other hyper-macho types, are being manipulated by their fears.

Lawsuits, Machine Malfunctions and Missing Absentee Ballots Among Voting Rights Issues Facing Jittery Election

“With the election less than a week away, the battle is on for voting rights. Early voters across the country are reporting long lines and problems with electronic voting machines. Republicans, meanwhile, continue to file lawsuits that could stop thousands from voting. We speak to Harvey Wasserman of Free Press and Brad Friedman of the Brad Blog.”

I think McCain is banking on the tide of racism in this country to trump wallet concerns!  It is unfortunate that he figures “Conservative=Skinhead” mentality!  I for one am banking on those white males that are seeing their retirement accounts shrinking, their wives, mothers, and daughters working harder and taking home less.  I’m banking on those white women that realize - we are really all in this together, and will explain to their men - baby we need to vote our wallets, now!  No matter where you come from, we’ve all been scammed, and manipulated by fear for the last 8 years, enough!  McCain is banking that no one really paid attention to his Congressional voting record, or that he said he really didn’t understand the finances of government!  Hello, are you kidding, you’ve been in Congress 30 years passing bills (related to $$$$) and you have the nerve to say that you don’t have a clue about finances!  I don’t think so!

Bob right on! After eight years of “borrow and spend”, socially redistributing “borrowed” funds to mainly the wealthy,do people still want 4 more years of this fiscal irresponsibility? If Bush had been a real leader, instead of a tool of the wealthy, who keep supporting him and his clones, after 9-11 could have said we have big challenges ahead and cannot afford the tax cut now, which I will put on the shelf until we can afford it, people in this country who have gladly supported this postponment, and the Treasury who be $2.6 Trillion dollars wealthier. We could afford to bail out Wall Street, and all the other spending, where banks now get to borrow or get cheap or free money from the Treasury and Fed and continue to pay dividends to their stockholders, instead of rebuilding their balance sheets, all on “borrowed” funds. Where is the outrage, except by the good people of Truthdig!

Fine topic and good timing. While fighting pointless wars against “terrorists” abroad, this administration, and yes, the previous one too, aided and abetted a home grown variety of terrorists on Wall Street. No reason why this shouldn’t be obvious to the dopiest of white males who believe both in Santa Claus and four more years of Bush, and a good reason why there should be a day of National Celebration on the day GWB leaves town.

I get e-mails forwarded to me every day or so from a group of solidly middle-class (real estate, law, project management, etc.) white guys who would no more vote for Obama than they would for my cat.  I don’t think it’s racism.  I think it’s simply because in their neck of the woods, you don’t vote for Democrats, no matter who the Republican candidate might be.

They were all-Bush-all-the-way, and it’s the same with McCain.  Doesn’t matter what McCain might stand for or against; Obama Will Raise Our Taxes and that’s that.  I can understand that coming from the wealthy attorney on this list (who, when I sent out the recent Tom Tomorrow cartoon, “Are You a Real American?” wrote back a one-word reply:  “Typical.”), who probably will have his taxes increased under Obama’s plan.  But a real estate agent who might have a combined household income of $100k?  What’s in it for him?

It’s people like this who shudder the hardest when Republicans talk about “socialism,” as if most of us couldn’t use a little—a lot—more of that these days.

Yes the situation you describe I have seen in action. Men who complain about those damn feminists, but need their wives when ordering out food or going to the bank. Men who feel tall and tough about trucks, but complain when “the little woman” didn’t take care of the income taxes on time. Men who, as they say in Britain, simply refuse to wash their face, clean their ass, pull up their clothes and get on with it.
Strangely, many of these same chaps actually believe that John McCain represents strong leadership. I leave it to the reader to figure this out.

A good example of the male mind…
A few weeks ago MkKKain was asked why Medicaid covered Viagra but not birth control.
Instead of answering this relatively simple question (as compared to “what is YOUR economic plan?”, or “why should we waste another young American life in Iraq?”) he became very agitated and stormed off. All it took was the word “Viagra” and his mind switched to libido mode and decided his manhood had just been questioned. Perhaps his little pill has stopped working for his little friend? That would certainly explain his constant state of irritation.
Senior men, in their sexual decline and with dementia on the rise, can be very scary and unpredictable people. Not the kind of steady and rational leadership we need in these times.
We, speaking for males, need to check our libidos, lose our glorious fantasies of grabbing a rifle and running off to war, and vote for the good of current and future generations of Americans.

We should never underestimate the power of the “Angry old White Guy” vote. That demograghic was almost single handedly responsible for the anti-Clinton backlash of 1994.

I do agree with some of the comments below that it is women who may just decide this election. They stupidly voted out of fear for the idiot Bush in 2004, and hopefully will once again grow a brain and prove to be smarter than the men here in 2008.

I still cannot be confident about the race issue on election day. Outside the world of liberal blogs, worries about Barry’s race are still palpable.

I’m actually betting alot of these Over sized cojones are talking the Talk, but won’t walk the walk on Nov 4.
First many have Female handlers, which let out the leash to allow them to appear be be leading. But remember she still holds the leash. I know a few of these couples- he’s the Big Daddy when his buddies are around but becomes the helpless obedient child when their not"Honey Where my Keys, my socks, my wallet..” ‘What’s for Dinner’“What are we doing this weekend”....So it will be HER who will decide who Honey bun will actually vote for- She carries more leverage than the Buddies.Bu tshe knows he has to look Tough around the Guys, and if the guys are racist, she’ll let him claim whatever he want, as long as he Knows what he to really do.
Second, They may love to say they’d be at the point should thoe evil terrorist ‘rear their ugly heads’...But are actually scared shitless the may have to put their ass where their mouth is.Having Worked with Horses, I have seen men do some very brave things, some stupid things, some very callous things and some very Caring things. I have seen Large guys run like school girls too- usually justified. Just like a gun a horse can kill you in a blink of an eye. So they may be talking shit all the way to the stall of a maneater, but stop at the door, and change their real bravado lives more in their Talk than in their actions.
So guys like this love to APPEAR to be the Commando Type, but know they have no intentions of following through.I get a bit of joy when one of these tough guys saunters up like John Wayne, and gets handed their ass. Humbling. So the next time they try something different, or ask me to try MY WAY.Due to my size, ‘Muscling’ rarely works, ‘Ramming and Cramming it’(Forcing) never Works.I’ve caught these guys doing something MY way- and are embarassed I’ve seen their Compromise. Those I consider silent compliments- happens alot in workplaces which pose certian dangers. So men like this ARE capable of realizing when their way has NOT worked, and are ready to try something different, while still maintaining their ‘Machismo’
I think most these White males are well aware that Bush Screwed them, but they hate to be wrong or admit defeat -so they Lie.A REverse Bradley effect. Consider they can go back to their buddies at Work, the bowling alley the bar and act as ‘Piised’ as their buddies are ACTING.
But just like Women there are some dumb SOB’s who will never take their hand off the hot stove just becaue they think it makes them look tough, instead of proof of how stupid they are.
Unfortunatley their are those who will Vote for a ‘Glory Story’ as much as they are those who will vote for the illusion of a ‘Hockey Mom’.They are living vicariously and they think these acheievments are theirs to claim too.‘I was never in the Military, but I voted for a War hero’ ....Yes Elmer you are very Brave running ‘recon’ to the voting booth, too bad you left the fighting to the rest of the platoon.

I think it is inaccurate to generalize about the class of men called(american)‘white males’. They can be further segmented into two subgroups. There are the ‘Christian’ White Males and then there are the white males. It is the former group that believes it is the genetically pure white race who are the true owners of america by fiat from their non-existent god. All others are just passing through HIS country uninvited and unwelcomed (but exploited most religiously). The genetically pure White Male Christians know that whatever the Washington Theocracy tells them is akin to the word of god. So their concept of reality is that whatever you are told by your christian leaders IS true by definition and that reality plays NO role in your life.  Ah yes, god bless america.

Remember Michael Moore said it all in his book “Stupid White Men.”

Why would anyone support this old, aging hypocrite baffles me. McCain is not only like Bush, he is far dumber than Bush on both economics and foreign affairs.

McCain personifies the two most salient Bush characteristics: lying is good and being a hypocrite a’nt that bad.

McCain is following Bush-Cheny-Rove’s “strategy.” Shamelessly keep repeating lies because there are enough dummies out there who will believe you.

While that worked overwhelmingly the last 8 years, I think this time around it is not working as good.  I will give credit to those white men who are seeing through the lies. I think this time around they just might save the country.

re: Inherit The Wind

Inherit makes a good point about all that war hero garbage. What is also incredible is how the Republican party has been able to pull this off, time and again. Ronald Reagan is probably the most remarkable. Packaged as an American hero, who happened to, like another genuine war hero, John Wayne, to fight all of World War Two out in Hollywood. Reagan went even further, as Gary Wills has pointed out, when the Gipper had his own imaginary narrative, in which he told the prime minister of Israel, that he was in the signal corps in WWII, and made a personal film record of the concentration camps liberation, which he said he kept a copy of, just in case someone denied the Holocaust happened.
This was, to put it politely, an ultimate “senior moment”.
Ronald Reagan, in the 1930’s, flew in a small plane on route for a screen test to a movie role. He was so frightened by the experience that he didn’t fly until the 1950’s.

My hypothesis, over the last 28 years (since Ronald Reagan, a total inept who hired crooks, beat the rather brilliant and always honest Jimmy Carter) is that it’s been about perceptions of masculinity.

Look at the words neo-cons like “Muscular foreign policy” “self-reliance”,etc.  It has nothing to do with any of that.  The real message, starting in 1980, has been:
“REAL men vote Republican. F….ts, wimps and pinkos vote Democratic.”

Read the book on boys growing up: “Raising Cain” and you’ll see.  Most males will do almost ANYTHING, commit ANY atrocity to avoid having their masculinity questioned, especially when they look in the mirror.

Despite the fact that George W. Bush is a verifiable coward, dry-drunk, sadist, and a cowboy who is (get this) terrified of horses, he has been painted as a Man’s Man, a hero, and a stud.  In 2004, a GENUINE hero, who was decorated for his courage even when wounded in Viet Nam, John Kerry, was painted as a coward, a wimp, and a “Metro-sexual” (which to the ignorant sounds like Homo-sexual).  So SOMEHOW, “Real Men” saw themselves being emasculated if they voted for John Kerry.

And no “Real Man” will EVER do anything to get himself emasculated or worse, THOUGHT to be emasculated by his buddies.

So the GOP has played this as the message for years.  They played in in 1972, against McGovern (another genuine war hero), then in 1980 and ever since.  And they are playing it to the HILT in 2008.

Now why doesn’t it work on Black males?  I can only guess, but the answer should be obvious.  The messages of “Real Men” have been so interwoven with subliminal racist messages that Blacks clearly recognized that they stayed far away.  The GOP has been playing the race card since 1964, but far more seriously and intelligently (if evilly) in 1968 with the “Southern Strategy” to attract the White racists disillusioned by LBJ’s push for the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts.

Of course, in 2008, it’s ineffective: Barack Obama is Black (in America, “mulatto” is meaningless now), he’s not a sell-out Republican, he’s not portrayable as a wimp, he’s bright, educated, clean (ethically speaking, which McCain, Palin and Biden are not) and represents an epochal change in American politcs.

But I’m just guessing about Black male perceptions.

Yet with White males, with families, sometimes financial desperation is SO serious it outweighs the importance of their dick and testosterone, and sanity rules.

Let’s remember: While Bush out-polled Kerry among White males by something like 10%, that STILL means 45% of us had the brains to vote for the right guy in 2004, not the guy from the Right.

So it is all about war and killing that gets men off?  What will it take to get the males of the species, then, to evolve from the simian stage?

I would like to ask McCain/Palin/Bush given that exec versus employee pay has risen from a factor of 40 to 400 in the USA since the trickle down revolution of Reagan at what ratio they would become satisfied?  When would McCain himself actually say enough is enough?  This is the other side of the coin to McCain’s ridiculous charge of Obama socialism, and is yet another issue the pathetic USA press does not do its job in framing for the people.

To be perfectly honest, I think a lot (but of course, not all) of McCain supporters are lured to his side by fear and racism. Too many people are willing to overlook these huge blunders and flip flops of his (i.e. being one of the responsible parties to the current economic crisis while trying to blame Obama/speaking against, then for, than against Bush all the while supporting his policies/first criticizing then supporting tax cuts for the rich/Iraq war/member of Keating 5 who lied for campaign contributions costing taxpayers billions, etc, etc) because they simply don’t want to see a black man in office. Rather than say they don’t want Obama in office because he’s black, its more convenient to buy into the idiotic, easily disproven lies that he’s a terrorist, socialist, Muslim, etc. Literally all of the McCain supporters I’ve come across do not extol the virtues of McCain, but rather their fear and hatred of Obama because of those same lies. I’m sorry, but this is all I can figure why anyone can support McCain, as virtually NONE of his criticisms of Obama stand up against logic and fact, while he himself is guilty of some pretty atrocious deeds
