McCain Has a Meltdown of His Own

    John McCain is rapidly making his temperament an inescapable issue in the presidential campaign. Does the nation really want so much drama in the White House?

    McCain’s performance in recent days has been, to put it charitably, erratic. In an attempt to show leadership on the financial crisis, he has called Americans into ranks—long after hostilities already began. Meanwhile, back in much-reviled Washington, the generals with cooler heads and a clearer picture of the battlefield are doing their jobs, minus all the histrionics.

    Thus far, an objective observer would have to say that Congress has behaved well in the days since Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson delivered a three-page ransom note that said, and I paraphrase, “Give me $700 billion, or I’d hate to see anything bad happen to that nice economy of yours.”

    Our elected representatives took seriously the urgency of the crisis. They did not fall into partisan bickering. A rough consensus began to emerge: It is important to act expeditiously but not to panic. It is unwise to give this administration—or any administration—a blank check with absolutely no oversight, as Paulson had sought. Paulson, the White House or somebody should explain why this plan will work and why some other plan wouldn’t work better. And the corporate executives who put their companies at risk and then turn to the government for a bailout should not be rewarded with multimillion-dollar compensation packages subsidized by the taxpayers.

    Negotiations between a Democratic Congress and a Republican administration on these and other points seemed to be proceeding at lightning speed, given the usual pace of such things in Washington. But then, for reasons known only to himself, in charged McCain to rescue the unimperiled. Said Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., who has been the lead negotiator for the Democratic majority in the House: “Now that we are on the verge of making a deal, John McCain airdrops himself in to help us make a deal.”

Advertisement

    At face value, McCain’s sudden “suspension” of his campaign and his call to delay the first presidential debate can be seen as pure politics. Lately, McCain has been sliding in the polls and Barack Obama has been rising. The Wall Street crisis markedly accelerated these trends. Late September is not the time to let your opponent widen his lead.

    Changing the subject, which the McCain people have raised to an art form, wasn’t an option this time—the public is hardly in the mood for another Paris Hilton ad—so the campaign had to try to somehow get out in front of the crisis. Given McCain’s initial assessment that the fundamentals of the economy are strong, that wasn’t going to be easy.

    The solution was to try to make it look as if McCain were leading the heroic effort to save the American way of life. To do this, he had to portray the negotiations over a rescue plan—which had been making orderly progress—as stalled and in ruin. “We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved,” McCain said, calling on everyone to “temporarily set politics aside.”

    But in trying to put himself at center stage, McCain managed to insert politics into the situation. The first issue all week on which congressional Democrats and Republicans split along party lines was whether McCain’s noisy intervention demonstrated boldness or bluster.

    The surest way to derail any prospect of a timely rescue plan would be to have Obama and McCain get involved in the nit and the grit of the negotiations. The reason is obvious: The two major-party presidential candidates would never really abandon the campaign with less than six weeks left before the election. They’d just be shifting it to a venue where it could do maximum damage. The anodyne joint statement from the two campaigns Wednesday highlighting the urgency of the situation was about the most constructive thing Obama and McCain could do, next to staying the hell out of the way.

    McCain succeeded in focusing attention on himself, but not necessarily in a good way. Voters may see this not as an illustration of brave leadership but as another example of McCain’s “ready, fire, aim” approach to dealing with any crisis. Putting himself at the center of events—making any situation all about him—is more than a political tactic for McCain. It’s his nature, and I wonder if most Americans won’t be unnerved at the prospect of electing a president who’s always so ready for his close-up.

A concise and insightful analysis. The 10 million pundits daily drive me crazy with their 500 different reasons why so-and-so crossed his legs while answering such-and-such question.
Lately I’m more convinced McCain’s erratic and rude behavior can be boiled down to just a few things, but I believe number one….he’s a brat. He was a brat as a kid, then women let him keep behaving like a brat, calling his wife, the rich 2nd one he had the affair with (...not the crippled abandoned first one), a c*nt and a trollop in public comes to mind, and now he’s an old brat. But unfortunately a very rich, angry, powerful old brat who thinks nothing of insulting and belittling those (staff, voters, foreign heads of state) around him, with a dose of senility tossed in. McCain’s temper tantrums are legendary on the hill; every one has a story.

It doesn’t take much web time to see the many similarities in the formative years and governing styles of McCain and Bush. And despite being party boy screw-offs (McCain was 894 in class of 899) they’re position and wealth is likely why they are both where they are and their past can be scrubbed.

For McCain to select Palin is like GM hiring some guy as CEO because he happens to own a car lot in Podunk (Alaska). Then has the nerve to tell me she’s the best there is? Screw him. If she’s even 10% of the best there is, then we’re in SERIOUS doo.

McCain is very much a me-me-me guy, a spoiled rich guy, a not all there in the head guy anymore if his weird antics are any indication.

One more thing, if he wins, McCain only has 4 years in him. How much damage can he do on top of our current unreal mess, given his ambition and ego to leave an historic “legacy” for himself.

We need a fixer, not a me-me-me guy.

I hear ya lichen:

I’ve been homeless myself, and it’s about to happen again, though admittedly, I DO have options…I just don’t like any of them, and so would probably live in my vehicle instead, IF I had one. (I haven’t owned a car since 2001, when I left it parked in the airport lot and called the finance company to let them know where they could pick it up).

But on this; I think you’re being really wishful..

•  “If you really don’t want cuts, then join the protest movements against them.”

And, WHAT ‘protest movements’ might those be? They don’t exist. You talk as if ‘protesting’ is going to restore these cuts that you claim Obama is going to make, even though there are dozens of other complaints on multiple threads of this very site, claiming the OPPOSITE! (he wants to spend too much here, and too much there.) In fact, McCain accused Obama, (indirectly, since he wouldn’t acknowledge his presence at the debate podium) of supporting/underwriting the MOST LIBERAL LEGISLATION in the HISTORY OF THE SENATE!! (go figure…just more rhetoric?)

But I’m a skeptic, and so I look below and/or beyond the innuendo. Innuendo leaves too much open for interpretation by the masses, and they generally interpret WRONG…pretty much like you do here.

I’m also a life long protester, so I know at least what DOESN’T work. And, that would be your kind of protest. (where’ve you been anyway?) In fact, it backfires every time, which is exactly why you’re wishing things could be like there were ‘before Regan.’ You realize that Regan was over 30 years ago, and no amount of ‘protest’ over that time has changed anything ‘back’. That’s because we can never ‘go back’. To think that is very naïve. You’re trying to use a hose from a 1958 Maytag washing machine to repair the water pump on a 2007 BMW. It’s an exercise in futility, but it might make you feel good while you stand in the bread lines. It WON’T help you feel much better when the instruments of a police state are zapping you with their taser guns though, and those are already ‘givens’. The bread handouts may never happen.

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=10341

Meantime, you quote vague things out of context, if only because the context is not provided for you. In that respect, we can blame Obama for not being clearer about what ‘programs’ he would cut. (you don’t mention any specifics, and I’m positive that he hasn’t either). On the other hand, you completely ignore, (if you ever even noticed it) the candidates’ comments on what the MAJOR social programs are; One being Social Security. In a population largely consistent of boomers, Social Security and single payer health care are THE programs that people care about, and we KNOW how McCain feels about them. (the references are too numerous to list here) He wants to complete the task that the Dick Bush Agenda had in privatizing SS; one they’ve been unsuccessful at. (maybe the bail out is a different way to accomplish that). Meantime, Obama HAS been clear on saving/protecting that program. (again, the references are too numerous to list). So, what we have are people (like you) easily distracted by ‘group-think protest’, following a vague leader, WHO DOESN’T HAVE A PLAN!

That’s really the bottom line. Protesting one thing is only helpful when you have an alternative to put in its place. So far, you don’t.  So, while it’s easy enough to formulate your own interpretation of what any one or more candidates may or may not say/do, you have nothing to suggest in place of what you THINK they’re talking about, and even on that, you’re most likely wrong. You’re not alone of course, because a huge percentage of the population is just as easily distracted, and unable to mesh idealism with reality. That’s why things have been as jacked-up as they have since Regan.

Meantime, you wanna ‘send a message’ that most of us already got long ago.

I’m looking for Republicans to be out of power for a generation.

********************************************

I’m looking for either the Republican party to heal itself and purge three things: 1) Religious fanatics 2) racists and 3) neo-cons and other crooks.
or be replaced by a TRUE Conservative party.

But if there is no opposition to question, badger and legislatively slow down the process, it will take less then 2 years for the Democrats to be as corrupt as the Rethugs have been since ‘94 (if not longer).

Opposition is a CRUCIAL governor on insane policies and power addiction.

We need the Dems to come in and fix things, but we NEED a true opposition party to keep them in check.

I hope McInsane’s pick of Gov. Moose-a-lini will be the impetus to clean house.

Tina Fey’s latest was brilliant. All she did was parrot Palin’s words and mimic her gestures and the whole country saw was a dangerous jackass Palin is, even dumber, more ignorant, and more incompetent than Bush.  Meaner, too.

I dunno.  When the beautiful villains show up on TV, they’re still sexy and desirable. Yet when I see Sarah Palin, as pretty as she is, with s really nice figure, I just want to vomit—Bush and Cheney give me the same reaction.  I think a lot of men feel that way—meaning they are seeing the woman for what she is, not for what she looks like.

Others just describe her as a MILF, or now, VPILF.  Not me!

Cyrena,

Yes, I, too, have read about programs that made parking lots available to people living in their cars, which is good, but…  I’ve been homeless myself, so I know just how awful that experience is, and how the services available are practically nothing (and the humiliation, degrading treatment and status immense,) when, as I said, housing sits empty, collecting dust (and certainly not making anyone money, either.)

I live in a definite blue state with very few electoral votes, so please don’t try to convince me to vote for Obama; it will never happen.  Obama has announced putting off his social spending, going through programs ‘line by line’ to see what he is going to cut; he also said in the debate that he would use a scalpel to do so (which he compared favorably with an axe.)  He said things to this effect, and it really, really, really is not acceptable to me.  Cutting social spending, privatizing, and deregulation ruin the lives of most people and even directly cause a great deal of unnecessary death.  I do not support it, I want social spending to go back to what it was before Reagan, and then to go even further than that; any talk of cutting it further than it has already been cut (i.e. similar to the role Clinton played in his administration) is anathema to me and I will never accept it.  If Obama is your candidate, then fine, but I’m not going to be swayed, any more than you are.  If you really don’t want cuts, then join the protest movements against them.

THIS is the FALSE PICTURES: and LYING distraction; deliberate MISDIRECTION when our lawless leaders are being confronted with the oodles of $ they have stacked up & set aside because this country & nation has NEVER been for it’s people; They cleverly say: look at Russia; or China; or this country or that: without EVER saying LOOK at why people in Iceland LIVE BETTER, LIVE LONGER: and Norway, and Sweden, and the list goes on & on & on. THEY are run FOR THE PEOPLE. YOU have been told “you are free”; BUT i say to you: THIS IS NOT TRUE. The citizens of the USA are enslaved to Corp & Individual Greed: and NOT for social need at all. A law was passed stating elec companies had to state the TRUE cost of getting elec to you; it was LESS than $20; yet you are billed (each & every single person) minimum $60 maximum don’t even know if it had limits; during the “campaign” it raised to $80 & THIS was before paying for usage. It SEEMS as though the MAIN “freedom” you have is for Corps & Gov have complete & utter “freedom” to DECEIVE, MISLEAD, MISDIRECT; DELIBERATELY. And of course, since “truth” is “relative” whatever they SAY is not to be questioned: but “accepted” as coming from “authoritive” figure.

You have heard it said (even by preachers folks) that “aids” was God’s judgement on the gays; on sexual promiscuity; and that there is no cure for aids; BUT I say to you THIS IS NOT TRUE. The USA Gov sent it to Africa in 1950 along with the polio vaccine. I also say to you that Bill Clinton would NOT have left semen on Monica Lewinsky’s blue dress nor would John Edwards have a love child; nor would the Senator who was so strongly against the blacks who when he died, it was revealed he had a family on the side with a black woman. Nor would the members of the Pentagon, & all the heads of the various departments at the head been sent a memo telling them not to solicit prostitutes (very expensive ones BTW) until after elections were over. NONE of these has a fear of catching AIDS whatsoever. SO: YOU decide who it is who lied, is lying, & will continue to lie. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE folks: between the “scene” (seen) what THEY have you hear, and see: and what is the REALITY.

God wanted to destroy the USA Gov back in 1949 & 1950; because they oppressed the people so badly & this is NOT the reason He led them to this land. The ONLY reason the USA still stands today is because His people humbled themselves & prayed THINKING wrongfully that it would be best for THIER children & grandchildren. They since repented before both God & men for staying His Hand.

not in Ohio at all; I watched it shown on Nightline; it was done with the “forgotten” victims of the house forclosures: the pets; they interveiwed a woman who went to the homes & always took along a huge pet carrier; she said it started out with homes in the $50,000 to $100,000 range; was now at $250,000 to $500,000; she said they were all identical in that everything was left including pets; as if they had all “disappeared”; the photographer shot the insides of 1 home: 90% of 1 community there were just “gone”; the video was being edited the next AM when I went to show my daughter; they “showed” a man who went in to introduce us to the “editor” who was a man eating his lunch; then back out & flipped over to James Patterson segment done later in the show; BTW, the “announcer” has never been seen again by me on the show; don’t watch it often; the News media BTW is being manipulated worse than in Hitler’s day; which is illegal as this is how so many people were unaware of what was transpiring in Germany. You might have caught the movie on PBS lately how the Americans were as bad as or worse than the Nazi’s were; or the fact that “Hitler” did an outstanding job in Europe; and should be remembered for that; or that Hitler was a “good” ol boy, doing nothing when Winston Churchhill wanting glory attacked him for no reason at all. Or the fact that the “wax museum” had recently even put up a figure of Hitler. You might want to check out “motherland” and what they did for Germany to get an awareness of the reality of what the Homeland Security is about. Might also want to find out why floride is in the water supply of the USA & other nations have banned it. The idea came from Hitler: remember: our Country brought over top Nazi’s to study: to find out WHY & HOW they did what they did; how they got away with it; & how it was “discovered”; in MY state: each is segmented off & doing it’s thing that runs from Fed, to ST, to county, to city: it is the vets who have been “dying” off: no one can figure out why they claim; in unheard of #s; remmeber the “briefcase” re military personnel info that was removed from their office with no reason & “left” conveniently to be taken when they family went out to dinner & their home was broken into & they took a thing or two? THANKS.  That video is freaking hilarious!  It was almost as funny as McCain arrogantly lecturing Obama on the definition of “strategy”, and then proving to all of us that he is clueless.  Biden had an awesome comment on this point, hopefully it’ll be repeated for all to hear.

My gut feeling is that a guy who graduated 892 out of 896 in the Naval Academy shouldn’t be defining the word “strategy” to a guy who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law School.  The difference between them goes beyond years.

•  “lichen: you mentioned the # of empty houses: do you not know what is going on here? folks: 90% of a community in Dayton Ohio “disappeared”; left everything; food, plates, clothes, furniture, Bibles, family pic:…”
Yellowbird,
I was caught by your reference to Dayton Ohio. Is that where you’re located? Small world. So is KDelphi.
The maternal side of my own family is from an even tinier place very nearby…Piqua, Ohio. My mother left there over 60 years ago, though we’ve been back periodically, to visit the very few who remained in Piqua. I was last there, (Columbus actually) just over 10 years ago when my cousin was killed in an automobile accident. Even then, Dayton was long dead…and had been for years. I found it very depressing, even 30 years ago. In fact, I find most of Ohio to be that way.
Could it be because of what you describe about these so-called ‘disappearances’? I doubt it, but what you describe sounds eerily similar to what happened to the Palestinians as they were being inundated by the Zionists. Sandy Tolan explains it in an excellent book entitled “The Lemon Tree”. As the Palestinians were intimidated and run out of their homes, (later to be occupied by the Jews emigrating from Eastern Europe) the oral histories tell us that they left ‘everything’…similar to what you describe here.
But, it had nothing to do with any ‘rapture’. Rather, it had everything to do with the forceful eviction of them from their homes. Later, the new occupants lied to their own children, telling them that the Arabs had simply ‘deserted’ their homes, with no plans to return. Maybe they knew they were lying, and maybe they were just passing on the deceit that had been provided to them. Whatever the case, the horror of that remains to this day, and is at the root of all problems in the Middle East. No people can be so cruelly displaced as so many Arabs have been from their homeland, without repercussions.

Anyway, I find your tale of this occurring in Dayton to be a bit far-fetched, at least in terms of the ‘rapture’ story..if in fact they’ve actually “disappeared.” Might it not be that they just DIED? Probably from neglect? That’s what’s happened to the rest of Dayton. Or..maybe they decided to get the hell out of there so they WOULDN’T die…like the rest of Dayton.

Now I’m just being sort of charitable here yellowbird, because I have to admit that you don’t have much credibility when you make claims like this…

“...Obama claimed the legal citizens of the USA “tore” babies from their mothers arms & they had to take refuge inside of the churchs; he went on to say WE the legal citizens of the USA are the terrorists; and they are going to “fight” us; WAKE UP AMERICANS!”..

So yellowbird, do you drink, or are you just afflicted with the same genetics that I’ve found to be peculiar to the general area? You realize how insane this is, right?

Nevermind, that was a stupid question. Of course you don’t. Must be in the water or something.

Just a thought.

lichen writes:

I’m very alarmed, in fact, to see it happening right now, with this bailout and then the promises of obama and mccain both to slash government spending even further as a result of it.  Less spending on social programs than Bush; decades after Reagan’s pillaging, we only get more cuts!!

~~~
lichen,
I actually ‘get’ and even agree with your assessment of the housing situation. It’s absolutely criminal to be running people out of their homes, and having them EMPTY, driving people into the streets. I don’t know how I feel about having all of that ‘nationalized’ under a regime like the one we’ve had for nearly a decade, but I do get your point. In fact, I spend a lot of my own time in homeless outreach efforts, and find that I’m just becoming more and more distraught by the things that my colleagues take as ‘victories’.
For instance, the “Safe Parking Program” that one of my very passionate colleagues has put together for homeless people who have been living in their vehicles. In many locations, they aren’t allowed to ‘park’ anywhere without being run off by some branch of law enforcement. So, she’s made agreements with several businesses to allow for parking on their property, but ONLY at night. Yes, it’s better than nothing at all, and better than being harrassed like they are bums or the ‘undesirable’ of society at large. Still, it makes me crazy that housing is not acknowledged as a human right.
HOWEVER, having said all of that, I have to ask you WHY (or maybe WHERE) you’ve come up with the rhetoric that both Obama and McCain PROMISE to SLASH spending on social programs? Where do you come up with stuff like that? Have you been paying ANY attention to what both of these candidates have been doing, saying, over the past couple of years? Have you bothered to check the legislation that either of them have supported or NOT supported?
Or, are you as guilty as so many who are lead by the nose through the ‘group think’ of the moment? IOW, somebody else said it, so it much be true?
Group think is such a danger to society at large. It means that people will believe ANYTHING, which is how we got this screwed to begin with.
Well, what I was referring to is the fact that, sudden disappearances and foreclosures or not, there is a massive excess of empty, unused housing in this country, yet it is allowed to sit there as “private property” while people starve and freeze in the streets, and, stupidly, instead of nationalizing this and guaranteeing housing to everyone, more people are having their homes taken away.
samosamo, I have read The Shock Doctrine, and it really opened my eyes about how this disgustingly arrogant ‘free market’ ideology manipulates, targets, and impoverishes formerly sovereign countries to the whims of international corporations and monetary institutions.  I’m very alarmed, in fact, to see it happening right now, with this bailout and then the promises of obama and mccain both to slash government spending even further as a result of it.  Less spending on social programs than Bush; decades after Reagan’s pillaging, we only get more cuts!!  That is a criminal suggestion, just as it was to cause the deaths of millions of people by looting Russia just after the collapse of the USSR, just as it was when US hedge funds crashed the ‘asian tiger’ economies, and then enforced ‘austerity’ measures on those countries, causing mass poverty and a skyrocketing of the suicide rate in Korea.
I only hope that we can stop them.  They have the broadcasting, but we can move in real time to shake up their makeup artistry and force the political framework to work for us.
Jackpine,
Looks as though my USA is going to get its dose unless enough people in congress get real convinced that a bailout is not a democratic way to approach this issue. And I guess I will get to experience first hand what you did in russia. If you are over here now, I would hate to think you will go through a 2nd dose.
A consequence of all this lying for the past years, combined with my educated ignorance of our country was that without hearing about the coverup or should it be called the lack if credible information from our msm, I was shaking my head at differences in what I saw, what I heard and what I experienced as being a bit too much out of kilter. And only in the last 2 years have I delved into the only sources of information of any worth, books and the internet. Man, what an eye opening experience. Of course there is the validity of any of those sources but from what I still see when from time to time I go to the msm media’s web sites and check on that slant and then what I see elsewhere, there comes a feeling of knowledge and understanding if not a bunch of hopelessness as in what to do.
I guess the point is that not only has the msm been subverted by neocons(for want of a better name) but the education one gets now is also subverted and how easily because the media has captured the young people’s attention at early ages to where the educational system has had to get these kids attention by using the msm tactics. And education is having to deal with less real information and more and more control to keep the public from learning much of anything. I was educated in this way and I tell you that when I started reading books my eyes really became opened and understanding was incredible. Klein’s book has been one of the most educating experiences ever. I can see why this will not be taught in schools anytime soon unless a real teacher requires it as part of a course. And once read, it should at least be an understanding of what is about to happen here and the why.
And finally, I have come to appreciate other countries for the positive, such as russia and china that have always been under a curse of ‘the bad guys’, only to turn around and look at the USA and understand its prejudices and hubris towards the rest of the world. ( I still despise our government’s drive to make both these countries and others the evil ones, when to see the evil ones, I am sure that just by looking in the mirror here in america will show most people the true evil ones, well at least ignorant ones)
samosamo,
Excellent post/summary of our economic imperialism.  I haven’t read The Shock Doctrine, but only because i don’t need to read about.  I saw it first hand in Russia.  And that experience is what fills me with fear and loathing for America’s future.
As an aside, one of the reasons that Putin is hated by the left and the right in D.C. is that he succeeded in getting Russia out from under the thumb of the World Bank and the IMF.  In 2000, when he came to full power, Russia was drowning in debt.  Today the country is not only debt free but has a substantial savings account.
Yellowbird,
Did you know that when a container of consumer products gets denied entry to the EU because of banned chemicals or components it simply gets rerouted to the States?
China actually has tougher consumer protection laws than the United States; a good many products made there for export here are illegal. (granted, how rigorously those laws are applied is another issue)
We are the world’s dumping ground for toxicity of all sorts…from the neuro disruptors in our children’s pacifiers to the couple of pounds of pesticides we consume each year on our produce.
I do not know about everyone else but I desire a country where if I go into a store to buy a deoderant I know that it is NOT full of 1 to 8 known & banned chemicals to HARM me! I want to put a dinner on the table NOT full of agent orange to harm my loved ones; I want to be able to clean my home & NOT have it a toxic waste! I want to be able to shampoo my babies or grandbabies hair KNOWING that it is not KILLING them! This is NOT to much to ASK! I want a REAL Gov agency that stands up to chemical companies; I want the head of the defense of the nation NOT the manufacturer or the pushing thru of deliberate harming & killing of more Americans than have ever died in every single war! I want the HERO"S who are the Americans fighting on the FRONT to get their pensions, pay & benefits instead of parasites in the Pentagon taking mega bucks home & millions more hidden away in “contractors” names: WHY does McCain still get HIS pension of $59,000 & other vets get NOTHING? Why does congress members all have double digit millions showing & far more than that in hidden trusts & off shore accounts? Why disabled vets from Iraq have NOTHING: not even a cent? And we are busy running around the world to push this false freedom on everyone else! and I am FED UP with Americans who are happy to slap a sticker on their car from China saying we support our troops; I wept like a baby when disabled vets got NOTHING: after waiting for YEARS; on 11/17/08; the oil companies got $13b; investors $270; A traitor is one who fails to fulfil his obligation or duty; (esp in Gov affairs); or one who betrays ones trust; TRICKERY is the definition of treason; there was no law against it; when I first started emailing Congress last fall. What do YOU want or expect in a Gov? One to be TRUTHFUL? or deceitful?
I haven’t read shock doctrine but I read something re this on http://www.congress.org; soapboxs; & it directly connects Bush’s grandpa with the take over tried but put down by FDR. The problem that I see is this: every 4 years the citizens THINK oh, a new Pres; it will get better; & it does (for the worse); 1st of all:you have to understand that the Pentagon has notoriously destroyed, then “hidden” ie burying huge amounts of perfectly good things tanks, motorcycles, tents, etc; in the desert & in the ocean to JUSTIFY “needing” more more more: while overspending millions & billions & trillions of $; deliberately deceiving folks with a ten page list of BS to describe a TENT. for the $ to KEEP for themselves; they always “lose” millions or billions of $ of “equipment” which is always backed up by Congress as “who knows where it went” when in reality it was never bought at all; it was on paper only; they THRIVE on the $; this follows down to ST, to County & to CITY; whenever the “fiscal” year was up; everything was up for grabs to whomever wanted it; or they simply destroyed it; for the whole purpose of claiming “they need more $”; THIS is the trickle down now: THIS is the reason the Gov’s of each state met with the Pres; at both St & Fed levels all this deception, falsehoods, misdirection; is being done; ***Bill C brought back $800,000 from Colombia for Hillary’s campaign; how will this play out when she states she’s against it? (4/08 George Stephanolus)sp on the Round Table; within a week 1/2 a woman “political advisor” was on C span claiming bipartisan agreement signed colombia Trade Agreement in 2006; just “expired” in 2008; congress extended til 9/08; going to a meeting where I said slick Willy’s been at it again & telling them what I had seen the Trade Agreement had NEVER been signed; we agreed to protest on 5/1/08; no one else showed up; going home I googled it to find: bipartisan agreement; it wasn’t all loaded yet; now it is; with a date of 2006; ***********all this country is based on is deception. I am curious, have you read naomi klein’s ‘The Shock Doctrine’? What you are describing is exactly what this whole imperialistic empire is about that klein describes in her book. All of it based on a creep named Milton Friedman from the Universty of Chicago whose ‘unfettered, unregulated’ free market system that was supposed to get less and less government involvement in the business sector was to create these great and wonderful societies that benefitted all. Trouble was, it did the opposite and proved that having unregulated and unfettered markets only brought out the criminal and greed element that in all the countries involved produced massive death, repressive governments(the leaders of which made out like bandits after the american element got theirs), anywhere from 25% to 60% unemployment and/or poverty.
All these countries and others that watched finally came to the conclusion that this was doing more harm than good and after many years of having the cater to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and some other central banking entities, these countries have begun to stand up and reject these institutions and actually kick them out of their countries. After which, these countries have been able to get back to more stable economies.
So, this same shit is now coming down here in the U.S.A. where the privatization of water works, utilities and other public functions are doing a number on what was a less costly service for the citizens. Since the US is where this milton friedman crap was created, would guess it only natural that it come here and it has been for a while starting several decades ago when jobs did start going overseas(remember those first ‘made in japan’ labels?). Now our manufacturing sector has almost been totally shipped out along with jobs it provided just to ‘cut costs’ for the corporations looking to maximize profits and minimized costs.
And what is so strange at the beginning of all this ‘bailing out’ ‘subsidizing’ the people or businesses was forbidden when this ‘shock economics’ was being forced on other countries but now when our ‘elite’ crooks who could not manage their way our of a vending machine are in trouble for their crooked and irresponsible mismanagement of the remaining industry in america, the financing industry, now our equally crooked and non-caring government are working their asses off to bail these worthless creeps out as if they are national treasures of some sort. Their only claim as an ASSet is that they have supported the w & dick regime.
Since our msm won’t report this everyone is left to start experiencing the hard ships of what this act of grand larceny of the people has created. And now a lot of people are waking up though it may be a little late, maybe it will not be too late. If you have read naomi kiein’s book, your eyes are already open but if not, read the book. I firmly believe that if we kicked the federal reserve out of our country put control back in congress and the treasury, less paulsen, our economy will stable out and make things better. After all it is only in the last several decades that things have been getting worse for most and better for a few.
I dunno jobart. I don’t think you’re sexist at all, but as a female, I have to admit that I just don’t see Sarah Palin as being all that ‘sexy’ or even attractive to the average dude. (obviously the First Dude Palin thinks differently, but isn’t he an alchie?)
So I mean, the only folks that are likely to be impressed by Palin in a FAUX NEWS skirt will be old ass geezers just like McCain. And even if they ARE impressed by leg and cleavage, what can they even do about it, other than maybe have a heart attack. (that might be good).
Speaking of which…that reminds me of a conversation I was having some years ago with my former childhood sweetheart. (we’ve actually stayed in touch for these 40 some odd years) and we were talking about Viagra, which we know is the first drug to ever be approved in the history of the FDA. He told me he thought it might be a good idea at first, and then he started ‘listening’ to the ‘fine print’. (that’s what I call that rapid fire disclaimer that they always include in the TV commercials). The ‘may cause’ or ‘side effects may include’...
dizziness, vomiting, stroke, hallucinations, heart attack, stomach ulcers, rapid heart beat, diarrhea, blurred vision, restless legs, HIV, cancer, Lupus, MS, blah, blah, blah, AND…in very rare occasions, may cause DEATH.  Check with your doc, and more blah, blah.
As as result of the ‘fine print’ my friend said “Aw hell! I just wanna have a little fun; I don’t wanna DIE!”
HOWEVER, if you think dressing Palin in a FAUX NEWS skirt will have the same effect on McCain’s cronies, it’s worth a try. At least the taxpayers don’t have to subsidize that dose.
Yellow Bird, I agree with what you say; that is an accurate picture of how things are, where private corporations are given ownership of everything (including ‘human rights’) and they monetarily elect people to serve their anti-life pro-extinction/poverty agenda.  I don’t believe that the congress of this political system would take my suggestions unless citizens made their lives an unending nightmare and tore down the corrupt legislature and corporations at the same time.
But dammit!  There is more empty housing in this country already to house everyone in America and all the homeless in several European countries combined!  So what the fuck is the point of stationing private bank security outside of empty houses to keep the people out?  We need to take down the private water companies, the casino capitalists and corporatist politicians!
I think that I can propose a strategy that McSame & company can adopt to help them succeed……after he’s percieved as “foolish” and a “joke” to the American & International populace AFTER tonight’s debate.
They got the expected “bounce” from the SARAH for V.P. selection. We now see that “bounce” gone in the latest polls and, given her recent media exposure, seems to be dropping like the proverbial rock. He’s looking pretty bad lately, as most knowing people see as clear as perfect glass.  Before I make this proposal, please excuse me [Cyrena, Louise, Felicity, Purplegirl, Yellowbird, et al). I’m assuming that you guys “might” be female and you might perceive me to be “sexist”. I assure any females reading this,  I am a realist.
Dear G.O.P ,
McSame needs to start dressing her in FAUX NEWS skirts. Get some of Victoria Secret’s latest architecturally/cutting edge brazier that kinda “defies nature”!! Why not get a actual “bounce” from your star to successfully bring your base back together. If you, and your guys, get to watch a speech from a nice looking female and get to see “lots of leg” and “big-time cleavage”, it is a strong possibility that a “she’s got my vote” mentality will follow.
We, as a people, should “never” underestimate the power(s)of perception. In fact, if you “really” think about it…....this whole “financial mess” has a very apparent “perception” manipulation as the “real” cause. Not much different in methodology from 9/11. Hmmmmm…
Ronald Reagan said what is going down now when he was in office: Corps should not have to pay taxes & now they are not; the PEOPLE are going to have to pay Corp taxes now along with their own; every other nation on this planet knows & sees that Americans are NOT free at all but enslaved to Corp’s & social greed instead of a country run on social need; FOR The people instead of AGAINST the people;
I don’t necessarily think all this is a result of “temperament.” I have no medical or psychiatric training and I know you can’t diagnose from a distance, but I really think McCain should undergo a neuro-psychological test battery. I suspect the results would not be negative.
HIs behavior has been extremely erratic, he was apparently “checked out” at the White House meeting yesterday, many observers have noted a droopy left eye of late, and he’s been saying things that are clearly untrue and maybe delusional. This all could—could—point to organicity.
By Frank Cajon, September 26, 2008 at 3:55 pm Link to this comment
McCain is ill. After a 35 year career of direct experience involving neurological impairments and the mentally ill, while I am not in a position to diagnose his illness I will observe him during the debate for more of the signs of organicity than those that I have already seen in the past 12 months. The human brain shrinks as it grows older and synaptic connections are lost but exercise, diet, and good general physical health can slow this process. Major illnesses such as cancer cause not only damage but stress the entire system, causing shortening of the strands of each chromosome in every cell of the body creating a shorter lifespan and premature cell death. McCain is confused. He is disoriented. His malignant melanoma is likely seeded to his brain and lungs, his last physical examination deliberately omitted MRIs of the brain and lungs because they are the most likey studies to pick up small metasasis of the tumors that have recurred elsewhere after complete excision three times. As I have posted here before: He needs for his own sake to have these studies done and should be (and probably is) on prophylactic chemotherapy now, which would account for his pallor and sickly general appearance.
Also, if he is to be our CIC (shudder at the thought, but we elected the Chancellor in 2004), he needs to have a formal mental status examination by a board certified psychiatrist (probably two), and be administered neuropsychiatric testing for organic brain disorders (three for sure would be Luria-Nebraska battery, Halstead-Reitan, and WAIS III, and formal memory testing). He should also have an awake and sleeping EEG. He is a sick man. And unlike Bush, whose paranoid personality disorder is the result of a lifelong pattern of maladaptive behavior and substance abuse, he is sick because he has cancer and is 72. He has rights, but not the right to place us all at risk because of his lapses in judgement. An American his age in average health has a life expectancy lower than a term in office. President Sarah Palin. The Left Behind books had it right.
RdV, I’m getting confused, (or maybe I should re-read the post). When did Obama make such a claim that ‘re-regulation’ wasn’t an option that would meet with consensus? I’m not saying he DIDN’T say it, (just because I didn’t hear it, doesn’t mean he didn’t say it) but it the opposite of what I HAVE heard him say from before this ‘crisis’ even broke. DEREGULATION has been the culprit!!! He’s made that point numerous times, though I admit he’s used political language, rather than finger pointing and kicking asses, and taking names. Because, well…we already KNOW who the culprits are.
So, I’m just curious about where and from what context you are claiming that Obama made this claim. That said, it’s true that there are some ultra conservative Republicans who have come out of the woodwork to complain about the restoration of regulation and oversight, but they don’t appear to form any sort of consensus.
Anyway, just curious. Troublesum says he (Obama) hasn’t opened his mouth about it, (not quite true, but he has made it pretty clear that the efforts to work something out don’t require his presence, but that he can get there if they do) and now you’re saying that he HAS said something. None of it jives with what I’m hearing and seeing, so I just wanna get on the same page as the rest of you.
John McCain has now pulled two stunts in an effort to forestall the inevitable: his party is going down to defeat in November. Monday a week ago sealed his fate but his decision to select Sarah Palin showed how little he really cares about America. Palin is turning into a national embarrassment and shows the rest of the world what poor leadership we have that we select someone as ill equipped to lead our country as Mrs. Palin. Second was his impulsive decision to try and postpone the first debate and get Obama to go along with him. McCain knows his only chace is to somehow keep this as close as possible right up to election day and then spring another of his surprises. Once Obama starts pullling away as is happening, the game is over and he knows it. What this shows at heart is McCain’s ambition to win the White House no matter what the cost to average American’s. This week was a sad chapter in his career, as America faced a full blow crisis, McCain uses it as a chance to jump start his campaign.
Some kind of firm decision must be taken by the government, that’s clear.  The one thing that investors seem to hate like a cat hates water is uncertainty.  And since the masters of the universe give our politicians far more money than the people do, just accept that they’re going to get their asses bailed out for them on your dime.
There are bad ways and good ways to go about this, but neither way will change the fundamental problem with “fixing” this mess.  We can hope that foreign nations pony up the money, which would make them defacto owners of America.  Or we can borrow/print enough money to staunch the bleeding.  The second solution ends roughly the same way as the first, with a twist.
As we might have learned from the years between 1923 and 1929, printing money to fix an economic problem begets much larger problems down the road.
You’ve watched the value of your dollar slide over the last eight years because our government has been borrowing money like a junkie.  It is simple supply and demand.  When we borrow, we effectively print.  There is not an infinite demand for dollar bills.
The only thing holding our national house of cards up is the value of the dollar and the use of said dollar as a reserve currency…the economic lingua franca.  A strong dollar makes it possible to enjoy WalMart’s everyday low prices and have a consumer/service economy without lots of domestic production.
The current plan is like taking sandbags out of one levee to fix a hole in another levee…
Rdv, you’re absolutely right.  Obama avoided the Clintonian VP highjacking of his Presidency, but the DLC influence and the Rubins and Lawrences proximity to his moderate posture is most troubling.  Let’s not just blame the Regan and Bushes’ for the faultering state of the economic union. Bill/Hillary Clinton are just as responcible as Phil Gramm; all were deregulators Par Excellence, and the DLC has, in-fact, ran with it th the quick.
This, I fear, will happen.  There will be a “bailout” package and no matter the ingredients, Prick Cheney/Baby Geo will signing statement it to death and start the post-admin pardonings, emancipation and law making alone with that will make the heads of the American People spin.  I think the transistion period of power transfer, among other things, might have to be re-examined.
Like energy policy, war and healthcare, the economy and the political order has to collapse before change can occur.  “Regulations are written on tombstones before it’s written into law” (Paraphrased/unknowm)
“Now that we are on the verge of making a deal, John McCain airdrops himself in to help us make a deal.”
That was yesterday. Today is a new day. The thing is, republican leadership counts heavily on two realities.
One, that their base cant remember anything for more than a few hours. And two, that their base is basically stupid.
Now, before everyone jumps because I called the repub voters stupid, please remember. I am not a repub. I just observe. So if anyone wants to get angry, get angry with the real enemy. The republican party. Because they really do believe repub voters are very, very stupid.
And every four years, those voters get a chance to go to the polls and demonstrate to the world, they are.
I count heavily on the belief that they ... the stupid ... are the minority. And that they ... the repub voters who are getting burned right now ... will reward their party with the payback they have so richly earned by throwing them all out of office.
But then again I worry when I see so many in mainstreammedia completely suck up the John McCain viasco and intimidate his grandstanding actually saved the negotiations. Proving they are pretty stupid too!
Meanwhile McCain is guilty of exactly the thing he claims to have done this silly stunt to avoid. Turning a national emergency into a ploy for his personal political gain. The man cares no more about the citizens of this nation than he did about the sick wife he ditched when it became politically expedient. Someday, the world will actually study this mans political “career” and realize, he is just another man with a hunger for attention and power. But little talent or ability to find it any other way than “politics.” In other words, the perfect replacement for a Bush.
“Putting himself at the center of events—making any situation all about him—is more than a political tactic for McCain. It’s his nature”
And that about says it all. Thanks Eugene, for proving not everyone in mainstreammedia is short on memory, and suffering from a desease called empty brain cavity. In other words really, really dumb. You are an exception that proves the rule.
Foreign affairs is NOT McCains strength. Using situations that occur in the course of daily life to pad his own political position is McCains strength. And overall ... that’s about it.
The man is no more qualified to run a nation than my grade-school-age grandkids. Actually, I think the grandkids know more about foreign affairs than McCain.
By the way ... Great comment Purple Girl! smile
The confusing behavior of McCain is troubling.  What does he really think or has Lee Atwater’s ghost trying to run this campaign.
I’m sure Obama will make some mistakes, but he is a quick study and is surrounding himself, for the most part, smart, knowledgeable people and limits his shoot from the hip comments.  How refreshing.
I don’t want “every man” to be in the presidency I want educated, collaberative and thoughtful leadership.
Actually, I think this is the perfect time to simply end the income tax.  A single sales tax should suffice and we will save hundreds of billions spent on collecting and administering income taxes.  Eliminate all corporate taxes also.  Of course, we would have to cut government to the quick and I suggest the first thing to go is the Pentagon.  Make it a museum or a playground for out of work politicians.  Cut governmentn salaries to the bone and eliminate at least of all government jobs.  End security for all politicians.  If they don’t trust the people, let them leave or give them sidearms to carry.  Also, collect the billions owed to taxpayers for having our natural resources mined and stolen from us.  Pass a law that says that all deficits must be cleared annually and if not, an annual tax should be levied on the wealthy to cover it.  Let’s take about 2/3 of the wealth of those good “liberals” in Hollywoood and tax the Gates and Buffets for 2/3 of what they now have.  They’ll make it back, once the rest of us are cozy.  I could go on, but this is a much better plan.
“Long after hostilities already began”?!? With whom? I’m at war with no one. Oh, sure, the government is at war—Bush is at war—Cheney is at war—the military is at war—but the country as a whole? No way, Jose. Not without a formal declaration of war do I consider anyone from an overseas country as my “enemy”—and maybe not even then.
An alternative to the “Bush Ransom Plan” that has a proven track record for us is to put $700 billion in a plan to restore our infrastructure. Jobs are the only key to our recovery. This would create jobs and help taxpayers with the confidence that we will be able to pay our mortgages and keep our schools open and public services in order.  Banks failing is not a big deal but if they do, do the same as they did with Washington Mutual.  Bailing out corporations is something we should all get to vote on.  I trust no one with my vote.
Ignorance is no excuse. Stop hyperventilating Dems. Stop bloviating GOP. These are the numbers McCain and Obama know about, so should you.
Well, maybe Wish, but at this stage of the game, I haven’t got much faith in the Democratic party—likewise Obama’s claim that re-regulation wasn’t an option that would meet with consensus. Is he kidding, considering the practices that brought us here and the amount of the giveaway, how could it NOT be an essential congressional expectation? Who is running this show that demands the taxpayer pony up for incomprehensible amounts and then doesn’t even address the fundamental operations that are sure to continue without restraint? Man, this is going to turn around and bite him so hard—he is surrounded by Clintonistas and now he will assume the DLC mantle and it will be held against him instead of distancing himself from the corporate New Dem luv in. Watch the seemingly, increasingly insulated fool—who seems unaware of that populist outrage out here, not even mention it during the debate.
How is McCain a Traitor let me count the ways (the progression and the Evidence)
First only made it through the Academy because of WHO he Was- Not his Skills or Intellegence (apparently copying off the Smart guy started long before he blatatnly delayed Press conference until AFTER Sen Obama had His)
Then this Below average Student and ‘Crash Test Dummy’ got handed an aviation Assignment- which he was not Qualified to be involved in- How many palnes mus tyoucrash before someone takes away your right to Fly? His ineptitude jeporadized the Safety of his Fellow crewmen. Any one with the ideology of ‘Country First’ would have declined the Assignment, due to lack of Ability- even if Daddy got him the ‘Gig’!
Then he never points out directly that the scares we see, his disablities, are a result of the CRASH and NOT Torture. Never mentions the Fact that when he was ‘tortured’ it was by manipulating the injuries ha’d sustained in the Downing- His Bones were not broken by Vietcong!
Then there is an abundance of information regarding Mac’s POW stay (Cigarette or Hot Chocolate John?). Possible footage of him stating the US was bombing Schools & Hospitals for Vietnam broadcasts.
I bet it was the Hanoi Hilton For Admiral McCains Son- but what about the rest, the ‘Nobody’s Kids’?!
then let us flip forward to the las tgreat Wall Street Collapse in which th eAmeircna citizen was handed a bill for about 300 Billion- KEATING 5- “Deja vu all over Again”(Yogism). Seems some of the Other Players have changed in the last 20 yrs- EXCEPT McCain!!!
So when someone wants to start Screaming Mac’s a ‘patriot’, I Remind Them Benedict Arnold was a General and He was a Turn Coat Too!!
Just ask the Families of MIA’s &  POW’s What a Military ‘hero’ Ol’ Johnny boy is to Them.
McCain shouldn’t be on Stage facing an Audience tonight- he should be facing a Firing Line!
Intentionally, with Forethought and obviously Malice soemone brings down Our Economy, that Equals TREASON- and McCain has th ehistory and credentials to have Earned that Title!
This is just the culmination of McCain’s immensely schizophrenic political life.
Just when it is crucial for him to get the support of his party - you know, the one for which he “de-mavericked” in order to get the nomination - his “maverick” past rears up and bites him right in the ass.
McCain is older mentally than he is chronologically. Maybe it is because he was tortured severly when he was a POW in Vietnam, or maybe he has alzheimers.
Either way, he is more erratic and hostile than usual and has been making really stupid decisions.
He contradicts himself sometimes a couple of times a day, he shields Palin unnecessarily from the media, he can’t remember how many houses or cars he owns, his behavior seems disproportionate to what he is saying (smiling or frowning at the wrong times),  he doesn’t even recall that he flunked out of the naval academy - oh now, wait at minute, he didn’t flunk out, he was only five from the bottom in a class of 399 midshipmen!
