The Missing DebatePosted on Aug 21, 2008By Marie Cocco The one certainty I have about the economy is that I did not cause Target’s profits to slide. Quite the opposite. I’ve been dedicating time for trips to the discount retailer to save a few bucks that would otherwise have been spent thoughtlessly buying, say, paper towels at the grocery store, where you never know if they’ll be on sale. Even Saks, the luxury department store, is suffering a slide in sales and profits. The economic pain is trickling up, a perversely welcome change from the immunity the Saks class has enjoyed for too many years to count. This week’s bad news is almost sure to be followed by more next week, when the Census Bureau reports on 2007 trends in income, poverty and the number of Americans without health insurance. The consistently alarming number regarding those without insurance is likely to climb again. Employers were dumping insurance coverage to pare costs even before they started dumping significant numbers of jobs altogether. And since insurance coverage is usually tied to jobs, the logic is inescapable. “I expect a significant increase in the number of the uninsured,” says Jared Bernstein, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute. The surge in inflation comes after years during which wages had been mostly flat, another trend likely to be confirmed by the census report. The economic expansion that began after the 2001 recession could be the first on record in which real median family income actually will be lower at the end of the “recovery” than it was at the last business peak (in this case the year 2000), Bernstein believes. It is no overstatement to call this a crisis. The thoroughly disheartening twist is that it seems not to have sparked a political uprising, even in the midst of a presidential campaign. Advertisement When the two candidates were not maneuvering their way through the religious thicket, they were calibrating their strategies for announcing their choices for vice president. Never mind that there’s precious little historical evidence that this choice matters very much in an election’s outcome. The way the candidates stage-manage the selection is now supposedly the significant and revealing event. You are left to wonder what any of this has to do with the price of milk, which, like the price of most other food, has gotten completely out of hand. I have never been one to hold politicians accountable for not knowing the answer to those silly questions such as how much a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread costs. This particular game of gotcha is unfair to politicians running for president, because they really do live in a cocoon imposed partly by contemporary security needs and partly by their fear of giving a thoroughly embarrassing answer. Still, the price of milk—rather, the broader, complicated, awful economic circumstances we confront that have helped lead to the mind-boggling price of milk—should be the most talked-about political issue right now. Yet other than the drill-or-not-to-drill-for-offshore-oil debate, no economic issue has made it into the core campaign message of either candidate. You can’t blame McCain. He is closely tied to the Bush administration’s failures on the economy and even flip-flopped to say he would continue the exorbitant tax breaks for the rich that he first wisely opposed. But where is the outrage from Obama? It has turned up, finally, in television ads that, in part, use McCain’s own statements on the economy to depict the Arizona senator as clueless. Amid this blur, I long for a candidate who would “focus like a laser beam” on the economy. That’s what voters are doing as they see their paychecks shrink from inflation, their jobs threatened and their middle-class dreams diminished. o.k, now I’ve see public education AND immigrants bashed in some comments here.
A lack of discernment in targeting who is responsible (for the mess we’re in) could arguably be called the tragedy of today’s Left.

“curiousgeezer” is right on the money (“When half of every tax dollar goes to the Pentagon…”)
By virtue of a public education system designed to keep people ignorant, the entertainment industry designed to keep people from thinking or noticing things, religion, designed to keep people from asking questions or questioning authority, and the way our purposefully incompetent government spends OUR tax dollars, we are on our way off the edge of a cliff.
Americans for the most part are too ignorant (and afraid) to even know what the issues are, let alone be able to pick a candidate who would have a prayer of solving any of these problems. As long as fear rules and ignorance/stupidity is celebrated by our society, we are doomed…in fact, it may already be too late.

It’s really a bad idea, to close all your factories while sending your troops off to war.
But then again, American’s are not longer measured by how much they can produce, but rather by how much debt they can carry.
Debts are then bundled and sold accross the world as derivates, to make even more money for the fortunate few.
Unfortuantely now, American’s have reached the limit of how much debt they can carry, so what’s Wal Street to do. (Maybe the revenue stream will go overseas too, as soverign wealth funds begin to buy American infrastructure.)
Especially when derviates, are not bringing in as much money as they used to, now that the Peoples Republic of China realizes that American’s can no longer service any more debt.
Eventually Ponzi schemes collapse, that’s where we are now. The economy cannot be “fixed”, it needs a complete over haul, starting with the Reagan years.

Is the global economy a primary precipitant of worldwide ecological degradation because the distinctly human-driven construction’s gigantic size and rampant growth could soon become patently unsustainable in a relatively small, evidently finite and noticeably frangible planetary home such as Earth provides to the family of humanity?
That is to say, could at least one of the causes of life and the Earth, as we know them, going to hell in a handbasket be that the global political economy is a human construction that takes its shape as a perpetual motion machine and is operated as a colossal pyramid scheme…. both of which are unsustainable, I suppose?

As I recall, Ron Paul brought up economics a number of times in the Repub debates, but he’s so smart and so well-educated about economics (especially about the Austro/libertarian alternative to the present system), no one wanted to say diddley-squat about economics in those debates—-and y’all know how McCain claims with some pride that he doesn’t know his posterior from second base about economics.
I expect a new depression sooner or later.

this is the master plan that has been long carried out with a great deal of malice in their hearts towards the citizens of this country: our political parties who have been doing harmful acts against civilians folks: with global dominion in mind, as “we have gotten away with it in America for years”; death follows them whereever they go; LOOK at the Indians; did they keep their word to them? LOOK at the veterans: stripped of pensions, health benefits; claiming no $ for years & wondering why we are so stupid they roll their eyes in astonishment of ignorant Americans; they call us bad names; & claim “this is the way democracy works”; it is the way CRIMINALS work; THIS is our Gov; BTW, just came from a neighbors house: her grandson that her family had not seen or heard from for years that was involved in the Nazi party: is working for the Gov. WAKE UP AMERICANS! It is DICTATORSHIP not “democracy”; NOT dysfunctional; it is the SAME wealthy folks who ran the plantations who RUN our Gov! Fed Reserve Board finally came out & STATED: the INTEREST RATES & ADDL FEES on credit cards are CRIMINAL. Okay’d by the Gov of the USA; the oil prices are what they are due to “speculators”; gosh, our Gov must have something to do with it cuz why else are the USA cars being offered $2.99 a gallon guarenteed for 36 months?

Have you heard of Ralph Nader? He wants to debate about the economy and every other thing the people of our country care about—the Iraq war, the environment, jobs, corporate crime, education, fair trade, and healthcare among others.
I think he has a right to debate because he IS a candidate for president of the United States.

As long as the masters of the universe can pull of a controlled disintegration of the grotesquely leveraged financial sector—“THE” economy of the past 25-30 years—then inflation will by no means abate. It is more likely to accelerate into a hyper-inflation, Wiemar Germany 1923 style.
Per the presidential candidates, who do you think uses their control over the MSM to give us these choices?

So many, many people have been hurt by these criminals. They have lost their homes, been sent into the streets because they were sick or injured, endured countless inequities and humiliations while the perpeTRAITORS continue to roam free. And this does come down to the price of the milk that some won’t find sitting in their fridge at the break of day.
And yet, we experience so resoundingly the sound of the silence of the lies of omission. Where are our leaders? The ones who’s position it is to represent the people of this vast republic. We have a handful. And by god we best support them in their efforts to bring accountability to this fiasco.
I give great thanks to all THE PEOPLE who by word and or deed have labored so painstakingly for those who’s options have become the choice between milk or kool-aid.
Recently, I stayed with my mother who needed some help, 83 years old. The level of depravity of the community businesses sickened me. Using company-store type tactics they have fictitiously jacked up the price of food astronomically. This also needs to be investigated.
I wondered… how is it that where I live just about 160 miles away that “Jack’s Pizza” sells for 6/$10.00, yet there… they were 3/$10.00. “Shurfine” tomato sauce (the off-brand) sells for 69 cents here, but where she lives is $1.39. Or the fact that decrepit old onions barely fit for human consumption sell for $1.39 per pound there and here they are $.69 per pound and fresh!..?
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that a truckload of goods driving 160 miles does NOT double the cost of each individual item. In fact, it doesn’t even half again its cost. Shame on the small community food retailers who engage in this deception. How despicable is that. These are their friends and NEIGHBORS.
So where are our candidates…? Speak up….candidates! The people are starving. Shall we eat cake! Although you have to admit, there are cake mixes which require only water…..and lets face it, today…cake is cheaper than veggies, meat or milk!
Maybe our candidates feel the people should eat cake and kool-aid…what’s cheaper than that..? And YES Marie, ....I also hear the silence.

They can’t focus on the economy because they’re not affected by it. None of them know the cost of a gallon og gas, milk or orange juice. The money just keeps rolling in, insulating them from the very real pain that so many people in this country are feeling. When the credit card bubble bursts, the people of the US will be in deep dodo. And that bubble will burst! I wonder how many people are using credit cards to make ends meet now and what happens when they’re maxed out.
