Inventing a Country-Club Muslim MarxistPosted on Jun 25, 2008By Joe Conason Precisely on schedule, the usual assortment of right-wing operatives is preparing its expected assault on the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. While this unwholesome phase of the election cycle is known universally as “Swift-boating”—named after the defamatory media blitz against John Kerry four years ago—the style and some of the personnel date back at least two decades. So does the winking charade of separation between the official Republican presidential campaign and the dirty business conducted on its behalf. The only notable difference this year is that neither the money nor the message has crystallized yet behind any “independent” effort to destroy the candidacy of Barack Obama. Whether such a campaign against him can be mounted effectively remains to be seen, but it will not fail for lack of trying. Back in 2004, the Swift boat group’s attack on Kerry commenced in earnest with the August publication of “Unfit for Command,” a book purporting to prove that the Democratic nominee’s decorations for courage as a Navy officer in Vietnam were undeserved and that he had fabricated his sterling military record. Those sensational charges won immense publicity for the authors and were soon augmented by a wave of national advertising, with millions in seed money provided by a group of wealthy Bush supporters based in Texas. Of course the fingerprints of Karl Rove, then the president’s top political strategist, were all over that ugly episode. This August will mark the publication of the first book-length screed against Obama, courtesy of Regnery Publishing, the house responsible for the scurrilous smearing of Kerry between hard covers. At work on the Obama tome is David Freddoso, a young writer from the stable of the National Review, whose byline has also appeared in the ultra-right-wing magazine Human Events and who was reportedly trained by Robert Novak, the conservative “prince of darkness.” His straightforward title is “The Case Against Barack Obama.” Competing with Freddoso’s book for talk radio promotion and cable airtime will be a similar product by Jerome Corsi, one of the authors of “Unfit for Command,” who has migrated from Regnery to a Simon & Schuster imprint. With somewhat labored cleverness, his book will be titled “The Obama Nation,” and is likely to posit, among many other implausible claims, that the Illinois senator is under the influence of the defunct Communist Party USA. Aside from such far-fetched theorizing, which excites only the hard-core fringe, what canards will the anti-Obama campaign exploit? Several themes have undergone testing in recent days, with mixed results. Evangelical leader James Dobson has suggested that Obama is deliberately distorting the meaning of the Bible, which is an unsubtle method of questioning the Democratic candidate’s Christian commitment and raising fears (again) that he is really a Muslim. “I think he’s deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology,” said Dobson on his popular radio broadcast, adding that Obama “is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter.” Describing Obama’s interpretation of the Constitution, he used the word fruitcake, a term that must be very familiar to him. Meanwhile, Floyd Brown, a right-wing huckster and unabashed promoter of racial fear dating back to the notorious Willie Horton ad of 1988, is back pushing the Muslim theme against Obama. This, too, is an obvious attempt to inflame anxieties over race and ethnicity. For too many Americans, Muslim wrongly means foreign and nonwhite. And this week the world heard again from Rove, who raised the old “elitist” trope against Obama, much as the Republicans used envy and resentment against Kerry for his wealth and status. “Even if you never met him, you know this guy,” sneered Rove during a breakfast at the Capitol Hill Club. “He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.” Insecure and pathetic as that makes Rove sound, he surely knows how to provoke envy and resentment among voters, especially white males. That was one of the most important messages used by the Republicans against Kerry in 2004, such as in the famous windsurfing ad. So perhaps Obama will be portrayed as a Muslim Marxist who hangs out at the country club, sipping cocktails and sneering at the common folk. The true message in that kind of crude, contradictory propaganda is utter contempt for the target audience—in other words, for you. It’s quite funny to see democrats so vehemently denying that their guy has any intention of resurrecting the modest social entitlement programs that the cons refer to as socialism. “We’re just as conservative as you are”, they seem to be saying. What more proof does anyone need that there is only one party. By shouting “socialism” the cons are only making democrats swear allegiance to military-corporate state and the dems can’t prostrate fast enough.

Is that he’s a socialist. That instantly disqualifies him from holding any office. I’m sorry If you like that or not. Besides, the left does exactly the same thing so why are your noses so far in the stratosphere? Obamma is a BS artist, McCain is a BS artist, there is no difference between either. Real conservatives aren’t voting for him because he’s a SOCIALIST. This takes no telling lies or making up imaginary demons, only hearing him speak. Everything that comes from his mouth is socialist and McCain is running a close second. The true primitives are those that need govt. to hold their hand throught their life because they’re afraid they may have to make a decision. The reps you see on television don’t represent the majority. I know this will send some of you into a seizure but like kerry, obamma is unelectable. Unfortunately, we will have to put up with McCain for 4 years. You want to win elections? Stop running socialists.

“Its long past time we should be outing these cretins”
The thing is, these cretins have been outed, are being ourted, can be seen very clearly with just a bit of study to be the perfect example of all things unsavory. dishonest, or simply rotten to the core.
The problem is the “thoughtful” voter.
The voter who understands Congress has failed, but cant see the difference from one congress-creature to another. The voter who knows the pain of republican fiscal policy, but only when it hits their pocketbook. The voter who shuts everyone up if anything that hurts anyone besides themselves, comes up. The voter who covers their ears to shut out the truth, but listens to anything that smacks of dirty. The voter who boasts, “I do my own thinking.” Then falls back on dishonest sound-bites at the last minute, because they don’t know how to do their own thinking.
In other words, the voter who cant remember anything for more than three months, and is to dumb to figure out what anything means if they could. That’s the voter Rove and equally disgusting liars like him rely on.
But nobody’s that stupid, right? Well right or wrong, that IS what the republican party thinks of their loyal supporters. They not only believe their supporters are dumber than a board, and incapable of remembering anything, they use this belief to guide party policy.
Because they have been successful at swinging the votes in their direction, it’s hard to believe they’re not correct in their assessment of the American voter as being to stupid to find their way out of a closet. That’s why they manage, year after year to fix the outcome of every election and everyone accepts the fix.
Yes there are voters too stupid to find their way out of a closet. But personally, I think most of them can be found in mainstreammedia. As far as the little guy back home trying to survive in the growing slave-labor market of a republican designed economy. I think they’re smarter. I also think they’re sick and tired of being labeled stupid by their party.
But we all know that propaganda works. And thanks to the aforementioned dumb, dumb and dumber mainstreammedia, they will be buried under a wave of foul smelling sewer, courtesy the Grand Old Party. Demonstrating, the only thing grand about them is their lock-step march to self-destruction ... reminiscent of the storm troopers mindlessly following a screaming psychopath.
May not win any popularity polls, but there’s one way to counter the coming wave of pig-shit. When someone repeats one of the lies as fact, simply say, “The republican party thinks voters are stupid, so they think voters will believe anything they say, so they think you will believe and repeat the lie you just told me.” And if they haven’t started yelling, or swung at you yet, you might add, “Are you that stupid? I don’t think so ... so why don’t you prove them wrong?”
Back when the swiftboat swill was going around, I put this to one of my neighbors. After a bit of spurting and sputtering, I referenced her to some independent media. Amazing how different her thought process is today. She actually recognizes so-called news, courtesy MSNBCCNNABCCBSFOX is actually BAD entertainment. A collection of BAD performers mindlessly repeating the “shows” selected “talking” points. Much more entertaining to watch a re-run of MASH for the zillionth time.
People get mad because they don’t like to be called stupid. But simple common sense can help those who aren’t accept the challenge to prove they aren’t.
As for that small group that hasn’t been hurt yet, they are the stupidest of all. They’ll survey their pile of stuff and money and decide the republican party of deception, corruption and greed has been good to them. No hope there.

Contradictory accusations have long been in the right-wing playbook. Theyre incoherent. Hillary Clinton was supposed to be a Marxist corporate lawyer and Wal-Mart board member. In Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler accused the Jews of being Marxists one moment and accused them of being capitalists the next moment. The right wing always operates this way.
Funny, I live in the USA, read newspapers and am not “uninformed” and I had never heard of a “Marxist corporate lawyer” I do know that Rose would never have hired a “Marxist” Sam Walton would never have invited one to his board-room, and Tyson would never have hired one to represent them. So the difference is she WAS a Walmart board member and a corporate lawyer that’s documented.
Hill-the-business-shill who began her political career as a Goldwater Republican has no political ideology. She is a self-serving megalomaniac who cares only for money, power, and the ability to push folks around. (as she did in Arkansas.
True “Marxists” have more honor and loyalty than this corporate whore, and in a fair world they would get an apology.

It would be great if a renowned psychologist or maybe a herpetologist could explain how what is laughingly known as the Republican “mind” can hold within its tiny compass at one and the same the two contradictory notions that Barack Obama is 1) a Muslim, and 2) a 20-year member of a Christian congregation with a slightly loopy pastor. But don’t count on anyone figuring it out.
The Not-So-Swift-Boat folks can sling every bit of misspelled and ignorant mud that they want, but they can’t beat a man with a brain with a man with barely a pulse. The only thing that The Favored Son and his Favored Guru said in the 2000 campaign that made any sense at all is that John McCain has a wire or two loose. His experience in Hanoi didn’t help, but if you look at the long line of drunken sailors from whom he descends, plus his abysmal record at the Naval Academy, there’s ample evidence that he was a couple of Budweisers short of a six-pack before he managed to get himself shot down. His more recent gaffes, such as calling his heiress wife the word every woman hates, and relying on Joe Lieberman to correct his knowledge of the Middle East, lead one to believe that he is not exactly hitting on all cylinders. Wrap that disconnect in his synapses together with his well-documented temper and long list of physical ailments, and you have a very weak candidate.
If he drags the Republican Party down to permanent minority status, that would still not be adequate punishment for the havoc they gave us through the unelected one. It will take us three or four decades to repair the damage he has done. So it would only be fair if it takes three or four decades before the Republicans ever have a chance to govern again.

Joe hit the nail on the head with these to connected sentiments ENVY and RESENTMENT. Thats exactly what it is, and its very easy to provoke in main-stream America, and ESPECIALLY NOW! The class warfare that was initiated 8 years ago has made this the most provocative tool yet. Nearly all of the individual attacks that Ive heard/read against Barack Obama have been a result of envy and resentment, (and its all the worse because hes black) and thats the sort of thing that is as old as dirt, and can be counted upon every time, to create exactly what theyve created. A class war, and an envy and resentment toward Obama, DESPITE the fact that he is far closer to the ordinary American than any of these other candidates or so-called leaders have EVER been.
Yep. Joe definitely hit the bulls-eye again on this one.
On the plus side, Obama has been expecting it. I dont think that John Kerry was, and he either couldnt, or chose not to respond.

In light of this article, it is extremely ironic that some Republican neocons along with Christian and Israeli Zionists (who are most certainly country clubbers) actually want to arm an organization that our own government has labeled Muslim Marxist terrorists (to overthrow the government of Iran). Search for “PMOI” on Wikipedia for more information about the MEK/PMOI along references to State Department reports.
Despite a few exceptions, I guess there’s no end to Republican (and so called “conservative") hypocrisy. Speaking of exceptions, I’m hoping Obama picks Chuck Hagel for VP. Having earned a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge, Hagel is true American hero! No comparison to someone who “reached his breaking point” in Vietnam and still calls Vietnamese people “gooks”. Obama and Hagel could renovate both parties!

I have to ask to come to a liberal leaning media website and read articles just to get your hackles up and then leave inflammatory comments? Its perfectly ok to disagree with any article after all we still have freedoms right? Your points may or may not true but your tone marginalizes yourself and insulting all other readers of the article makes them apt to dismiss you entirely. So I ask what is your purpose?

The genius of the bully is that he will go places that no one else will go. He understands that lies are tools. He understands that anyone who has something to gain has something to lose. He makes his own rules and so is not afraid to break your rules. He creates the context within which YOU must play the game - and the game is rigged in his favor. Always. That’s key. He can’t lose. “We” his victims, may be “right” but he will be the winner. (Bush says he will be vindicated by history.)
The bully understands the fatal flaw. And for democrats (all of whom have something to lose) that flaw is their willingness to concede that they may be wrong. That there is a “gray” area. That there are “nuances”. That patriotism needs to be defined. That god may not be Christian. That there is a world worth knowing outside of borders of the US.
The bully uses this flaw to play on the fears of those who think that nuance is weakness and that if you have to define patriotism then you don’’t know what it is in the first place.
Lastly, the bully, the American bully, knows that Americans need to believe that they are great and that the world needs us because we are great.
The American bully knows that you will believe anything about anyone who is not like you.
The American bully needs you, but he thinks you’re pathetic.

But will any left-leaning author publish a book exposing John McCain as the traitorous, collaborating weakling that he is? No. The son-of-a-bitch should be summarily executed for his collaboration with the North Vietnamese...but i’ll have to listen to how he’s a frickin’ “war hero” from now until November.
His fellow POW’s had to listen to his voice over the loudspeakers parroting everything that the North Vietnamese told him to say. Soldiers on the ground got to hear him on the radio. And he talked so fast that the Navy had to stop the bombing runs after experiencing a 60% increase in aircraft fatalities in the year following McCain’s capture. Who do you think gave them the flight paths, altitudes, etc.?
And don’t forget that the KGB would have overseen the “interrogation” (quotes because lil’ John probably didn’t even have to be questioned much less beaten) and collected all of that information for its own use.
Whatever happened to “name, rank, and serial number”? Lot’s of good men held out, too many never made it home...and yet a Communist collaborator runs for President on his record as a Communist collaborator. Only in America.

Right Wing attack number one: Using Obama to beat Obama.
Many candidates have measured the Oval Office drapes prematurely. But Barack Obama is the first to redesign the presidential seal before the election.
His seal featured an eagle emblazoned with his logo, and included a Latin version of his campaign slogan. This was an attempt by Sen. Obama to make himself appear more presidential. But most people saw in the seal something else chutzpah and he’s stopped using it. Such arrogance even self-centeredness have featured often in the Obama campaign.

Interesting. Every charge in the above piece concerning the “right wing attack machine” had already been played out in the democratic primaries. The Muslim myth, the race card, the elitism, the arrogance, the Michele factor and the almost total lack of experience. All of these things were issues brought to the fore by fellow democrats. But now we’re being told that the republicans are just awful to make these things election year issues.
And many of you here will swallow this tripe as if it’s real. You’ll soon be whining and crying about the mean republicans and how unfair. How evil. You’ll completely dismiss or forget the that you all witnessed the attack tactics by fellow democrats. You’ll only concentrate on demonizing ‘the others”.
