This Way to Better Media

“This way to better media,” read the floor sign directing people through a skyway to the Minneapolis Convention Center. Thousands of people gathered there for the fourth National Conference for Media Reform, hosted by freepress.net. They came from all walks of life and all ages to address a central crisis in our society: our broken media system. I was one of the invited speakers.

Despite increasingly complex digital-media offerings and hundreds of channels, we see the diversity of media ownership shrinking, along with the diversity of voices that are broadcast. People are fighting back, organizing, creating alternatives and holding the corporate media giants accountable. The corporations are pushing back. With life and death, war and peace, at stake, hinging on an informed and engaged populace, the stakes have never been higher, the media never more important.

Prominent traditional journalists with decades of experience mingled with the emerging generation of new media producers. Journalist Bill Moyers, who has won more than 30 Emmys, authored four best-sellers and currently hosts the popular PBS weekly news program “Bill Moyers Journal,” opened Saturday with a plenary address, saying:

“Our dominant media are ultimately accountable only to corporate boards whose mission is not life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for the whole body of our republic, but the aggrandizement of corporate executives and shareholders.” Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. is the poster child of media conglomerates. Murdoch’s media empire spans the globe, with 35 TV stations in the U.S., the Fox News Channel (so-called) and many other cable channels, The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, HarperCollins, 20th Century Fox movie studios and a slew of interrelated sports and entertainment properties.

Moyers’ outspoken critique of the corporate media has provoked Murdoch’s chief attack dog, Bill O’Reilly. Last week on his Fox show, O’Reilly said of the media reformers, “These people are crazy ... real nuts!” Josh Silver, Free Press executive director, responded: “He’s a mouthpiece for the largest media corporations. And that kind of omnipotent power that these large networks have, taking control of that and taking that power back from them is what this conference is about.”

As Moyers finished signing his latest book, “O’Reilly Factor” producer Porter Berry and his camera crew pounced. Dan Rather was at the conference but eluded the Fox stakeout.  Moyers turned the Fox ambush back on Berry:

Moyers: “Rupert Murdoch said the best thing that will come out of the Iraq war will be [oil] at $20 a barrel. Now, today, when I came here, I looked, and it was $130-something. When is Rupert going to explain why the war didn’t give us $20-a-barrel oil?”

Making the link between media conglomerates and militarism, Moyers questioned Berry further about Murdoch:

Moyers: “Does Bill O’Reilly work for Rupert Murdoch?”

Berry: “He works for Fox News.”

Moyers: “But who owns Fox News?”

  Berry: “News Corp. ...”

Moyers: “Rupert Murdoch is the boss.”

Indymedia videographers crowded around the two, and the video clips soon found their way onto the Internet. O’Reilly ran a heavily edited clip of the exchange, with none of the above included, but had a “body-language expert” on his show, attempting to smear Moyers. The fact that Murdoch producers were at the conference trying to discredit prominent participants demonstrates the need for honest, strong, countervailing media outlets.

Sen. Byron Dorgan also addressed the conference. On Monday, he and Sens. John Kerry, Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg introduced a bill that would end Pentagon use of funds to spread propaganda and charged both the Pentagon inspector general and Congress’ Government Accountability Office to investigate allegations that retired generals were used to push for war with Iraq.

Elected officials will not solve our media crisis alone. The grass-roots movement for media reform is growing, and with mass layoffs in newspaper and broadcast newsrooms, critical elections, burgeoning military budgets and multiple wars and occupations, and with emergent and accessible digital-media tools and networks increasingly available to most people, there is no better time to join it.
Amy Goodman is the host of “Democracy Now!,” a daily international TV/radio news hour airing on 650 stations in North America. Her third book, “Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times,” was published in April.

certainot,

I wrote one of my senators which of the two for my state I thought was the better asking his ideas about the breaking up of the msm monopoly and reinstituting the fairness doctrine to open up the public air waves.
I just got his reply which completely side stepped the breaking up of the monopoly but ‘respectfully’ disagreed with bringing back the fairness doctrine by stating:
‘the doctrine actually discouraged such coverage(equal)because stations wanted to avoid demands to air opposing views,.... because of possible conflict with programming that produced advertising revenue.’
Not too untypical of the congressional drive for profits and the demoracy be damnned.
He further states that the liberals(which he confuses me as being one) want to force radio(and tv) stations to put more liberal shows on and/or force the conservative shows off the air. I guess he thinks there is not enough conservative ownership of the msm.
I definitely take this as being talked down to and it will not be hard to vote in November for his seat, and I actually thought I would vote for him until this response to his stance. I once again I am not a democrat nor am I a republican.

Thanks to FSTV for broadcasting the entire event.  It was well worth watching.  There were many speakers unknown to me expressing valid and thought-provoking ideas.  The two FCC commissioners gave some real insights of the actions needed and the Senators’ talk showed the promise of reform coming.  Prof. Lezzig allowed us to see a little of his brilliance, while Moyers and Rather side-stepping their sell-out failed in their attempt.  The real applause and the genuine honors went to Amy Goodman, as it should.  She IS media reform.

Since Reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine the Roves of the GOP have been framing with a nail gun while progressives have been using a rock. Talk radio has been the difference, even with other media consolidation (which was enabled to a large degree by the same TR monopoly).

The biggest political blunder in the last 20 years, or longer when you factor the time lost dealing with climate change and implications of the bush disaster, was progressives ignoring the talk radio monopoly.

Talk radio does the groundwork for the GOP.  It isn’t a matter of how distasteful or inane it is- it is the uncontested repetition to an often captive audience that counts.  It is what makes most ‘red’ states ‘red’- large areas with few alternatives to listen to on that ancient medium of information- radio.  And until America has some new form of Fairness Doctrine or some other way to limit the monopoly, bipartisanship is for liars or fools and democracy is just about impossible.

Getting a Dem in the White House, even this year, will be made much harder because of the talk radio monopoly. The rest of the lazy celebrity talking heads will use it to set the bar for what they can do to Obama in getting Mccain into the White House.  It was very useful keeping Clinton in the race.

Most political and media analysis is done while discounting or even ignoring the effect of the Republican talk radio monopoly. Most media analysts read and watch. There are no talk radio transcripts to search to analyze to demonstrate the power of that coordinated uncontested repetition that reaches 50-70MIL Americans 24/5/365 and is used by the Roves and Norquists like an invisible hammer to whack their opponents in the democratic party and anyone in the media who would dare to criticize their annointed leaders and irrational policies.

Since the Fairness Doctrine was killed by Reagan the GOP has had near complete free rein to frame and control the debate and the limits of the debate, to threaten and intimidate politicians without having to face those they threaten, to censor and to swiftboat anything and anyone progressive. The loudmouths lay out a smorgasbord of prechewed and tested one liners and talking points for the lazy celebrity media to pick from and most analysts only see the final result.

Many of the political myths that dog progressives now could not have been created without the uncontested repetition of that talk radio monopoly. The Clintons, Gores, and Kerrys probably still don’t know what really hit them. Those kinds of character hit jobs can’t be done on TV and print alone, even with today’s consolidation—they have to put up an appearance of balance.

So we know the problem, what the solution?  Do we break up the big conglomerates?  Do we pull licenses of stations with crummy news department?

Bob Scheer is the perfect example of what happens when a journalist goes against the system and tells the truth unvarnished. He did just that, and for his courage got fired by the LAT, just as Chris Floyd got fired by the Moscow Times (god knows who owns that and runs its policy board). No one on this side of the pond will publish Greg Palast, who doesn’t lie, merely keeps telling inconvenient truths. Your once honest journalists are not dummies, they are brilliant analysts like Joe Conason and Scott Ritter, but those worthies would find their incomes shrunk to that of Adam Clymer if they dared to start telling it like it is instead of how the publishers and the corporatists want it told. The Parry boyz won’t tell the truth, and I note of late that even Gore Vidal has stopped talking about oil and started talking like a corporatist, for HE too depends on his publisher for MONEY.

He who controls the money controls the message.

Here is the real message: if we don’t steal about a quarter of the world’s oil, we are in big trouble; we can’t pay for it and we have to have it; that’s it, and it doesn’t matter how many bodies we pile up or how many lies we tell.

When the American media refuse to report on the fact that Articles of Impeachment have been filed against the most criminal president in US history, we’ve got trouble right here in River City.
