The Running Mate DilemmaPosted on Jun 4, 2008By Joe Conason The selection of a vice president is not only an exercise in political handicapping but also a national rite of statecraft. Candidates, advisers, pundits and assorted experts try to calculate the ethnic, geographic, gender and ideological characteristics of potential running mates, but what this choice actually reveals is the character of a presidential nominee. For Barack Obama, the choice of a vice president is a test of his self-confidence and his vaunted judgment. Should he seek to mollify the disappointed Clinton supporters, especially among his party’s women? Or should he try to balance his own political weaknesses with somebody else’s strengths? Will he attempt to win a region with his choice, or even one crucial state? For John McCain, this decision will reflect the character issue that is now at the center of his campaign. Should he try to motivate the sullen base of the Republican Party by picking a right-wing hard-liner? Or should he renew his appeal to independents and even Democrats with a fresh-faced reformer? Can he strike deep into the opposition by choosing a female or minority candidate (or both)? For either candidate, the selection process may be complicated by extraneous considerations. Suffering under a financial disadvantage, for example, the Republican campaign could be tempted by the likes of Mitt Romney, whose willingness to spend his own millions on negative ads certainly impressed McCain during the primaries. It is hard to imagine any other reason why the straight talker would tap a politician he so ardently despises. Meanwhile, certain leaders of the religious right are openly promoting the candidacy of Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and extinguished fad of the early primaries. Personable as he is, Huck nevertheless emphasizes the Republican extremism that is now out of favor with most American voters. He also talks too much and says stupid things about shooting people. Advertisement But if McCain confronts quandaries, those faced by his rival are just as difficult. First, Obama must engage in a complex and challenging dance with Hillary Clinton, according her appropriate respect without allowing her to dominate the process. Current polling data indicates that she would be an important asset to the Democratic ticket—if she really wants the second spot and if Obama can imagine working with her in the White House (with her husband hovering somewhere in the background). Should that seem impossible, Obama remains obliged to consider the disappointment of women who backed Clinton as their gender’s great hope. It will be hard for them to accept that progress toward equality is a zero-sum game in this election cycle. Among the female officials of rank and merit are Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas. Both endorsed Obama, but neither possesses the national security experience that he may regard as his ticket’s most pressing need. Ranking women who do, such as Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Jane Harman, both California Democrats, differ substantially with him on important foreign-policy issues. Democrats with the strongest military credentials include Sen. James Webb, the former Reagan Navy secretary who just might capture the electoral votes of his home state of Virginia, and Gen. Wesley K. Clark, who served as supreme commander of NATO during the Clinton administration. Both are decorated Vietnam veterans. What Obama and McCain should remember as they draw up their lists is that many, if not all, successful vice presidential nominees were chosen by instinct as much as by crass calculation. Bill Clinton chose Al Gore because he wanted to make a statement about generational change, but also because he thought they could govern well together. Al Gore chose Joe Lieberman to make a statement about Bill Clinton, a mistake he will always regret. George W. Bush chose Dick Cheney to buy himself a touch of badly needed gravitas. That choice didn’t help him win the 2000 election, which he actually lost—but Cheney certainly helped secure his legacy as one of history’s worst presidents. The lesson is to be bold as well as thoughtful—and above all, to treat the vice presidency as a national trust and not a campaign gimmick. Edwards has already stated he would not accept a vp position. All of those you’ve mentioned are good choices but in considering the woman’s vote and the possibility in Hillary supporters feeling snubbed should she not get the vp nomination, I thought Caroline would be an affective way around that and keep everybody happy. Sadly I believe she won’t accept. But that sure would have been a dream team though, a real dream team.

I liked the suggestion of Caroline Kennedy for VP, although I think Obama has his own ideas as to where her guidance is needed. Hillary may be given a position outside being a Senator, although she can be quite useful from her current position with a friendly President.
I think he should pick from a list including Edwards, Richardson, or Dodd.

I agree with most of what you’re saying, especially about taking care of us first. We’ve been neglected for far too long and those in charge don’t give a damn. I would like to point out that this current regime which is militarily imposing its will around the globe is in fact isolationist. It is acting unilaterally under a unitarian authority. There is no diplomacy. There is no rational discussions between us and the rest of the world. There is only George Bush and his my way or else philosophy. That in fact makes us the most isolated nation on the planet in spite of us being scattered all over it and when the crap really hits the fan as it’s going to, it also means the rest of the world won’t be willing to come to our aid.

Jim Webb, Caorline Kennedy, anyone…anyone, as long as they aren’t a part of the Democratic Leadership Council.
I don’t trust the Third-Way philosophy, in general, and Bill Clinton’s triangulation. Though I understand the pressure of losing the house in the midst of his first term, giving way to the Republicans as he did, combined with his well to the right, Republican-lite stances were sickening: NAFTA, Telecom 96, etc.
I don’t care too much for any extreme, left or right, but some sense of the public good, of general welfare has been ignore for far too long in this country. It began with Nixon/Ford and brought to it’s zenith with Reagan/Bush and Bill Clinton’s presidency extended any good will or deed to wall Street, Silcon Valley amd finally over seas. This is unexceptable and treasonous.
I’m no isolationist, inspite of Cheney/Bushes oil imperalism, and I recognize the special place the United States hold in the world, but we have to fix America, our children, our soldiers our nation, first.
We can’t save the world until we save ourselves.

giving Colin Powell the vp spot might embolden the right to knock Obama off. They’ve been pulling Powell’s strings for years now and besides, Powell has already ruined his chances with that UN speech making him an accomplish, unwittingly or not, to the lies perpetuated by this current administration. I do like John Edwards, though in making him a running mate a whole lot of elderly women voters behind Hillary might rebel. I see the solution as I mentioned in an earlier post. Make Caroline Kennedy the vp and Hillary the secretary of health and human services. To add insult to injury, make Edwards the attorney general.

Make Caroline Kennedy the vice president and give Hillary secretary of health and human services. Caroline Kennedy is better versed than most career politicians and she has a degree in constitutional law. Her experience comes in the form of having the best political tutors in US history. She would maintain the women’s vote Hillary has gathered and Hillary would be able to embolden her national health care plan while retaining a key administrative post. There are no losers here. Only the republicans. And Caroline represents the change to a business as usual Washington. She is also as dynamic as Barack.

Powel will be the best choice.

I still believe John Edwards to be a very viable choice for vice President. I think Edwards has credibilty and is in accord with many of Obama’s views. Obama has been (and I hope will continue to be) a breath of fresh air in the midst of “stink” that permeates both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Let Hillary run as an independent with Liebermann as her veep running mate. They would have more votes than Obama will get, and they would have the AIPAC money behind them as well . . .
They might not win the presidency, but they’d surely shut Obama up once and for all. No one said it was not good to nominate a black man, but when he takes the nomination knowing he can’t win the presidency, he is destroying both the Democratic Party and his country, because as sure as the sun rises, he will lose to the racist Republicans and Democrats who will join together without fanfare to defeat the upstart negro who used oratory AND NOTHING ELSE to wrest the nomination away from an opponent who COULD have won the presidency easily had he not stolen all her black voters away.

The Clintons are very excited at the prospect of Obama campaigning for HIllarys VP bid. The Obama camp remains quiet as they deliberate whether $20 mil is a high enough price to pay for the honor.

Cyrena, you beat me to it!!! Hillary is not qualified to be vice. Her ‘qualification,’ better yet boast of receiving more votes blah, blah, blah (18 million by Hillary count) cries out for a reality check.
It’s the old numbers game writ large. In fact, this election cycle saw an unbelievable turnout in every single primary, ever single caucus, either double, triple or quadruple compared to 4 years ago. Hillary’s numbers reflect huge voter turnout.
That off my chest, Obama’s vice-president search squad headed by Caroline is yet again brilliant. Gets Hillary off his back, lends dignity to what is often a sleazy process, provides a justifiable ‘stall’ and keeps him in the driver’s seat - he afterall appointed the squad members. This guy is really smart.

It ain’t gonna happen Mr. Rosenblatt. It’s too late to ‘counter’ the antics the she’s indulged in for the past year, and the Repugs are already using it against him.
See it here. It’s pretty obscene.
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/39811.html
They’ve used her own words, (and Bill’s) to start ‘swiftboating’ him already.
Besides that, if anyone honestly believes that all of Hillary’s ‘baggage’ has already been scrutinized, that would be a naive assuption.
There is so much dirt to Billary’s Little Rock connections, the ticket wouldn’t stand a chance. And let us not think for a moment, that the same stuff wouldn’t have come out if she had taken the nomination.
So, since Obama has a clean record, and the best they can do is try to harp on his ‘experience’ thing, he needs to select someone that is already well vetted, and make the cleanest break he can with the Clinton’s.
At the end of the day, he won this nomination based on his promise of change in the way Washington does business. There is no possible way to accomplish that by keeping the Clinton’s around. It would be the equivalent of political suicide for him, and a disaster for all the rest of us.

Obama’s first and greatest obligation is to get elected.
Report thisHe will probably face vicious and disreputable unauthorized personal and racial attacks from groups like the “Swift Boat” crowd.
After a proper period for reflection, but not too long, he must bring Clinton into the fold as VP running mate, together with her intensely loyal supporters.
“Dirty tricks” can’t be used against Clinton because she has been exposed to scrutiny for two decades. Any other VP candidate could be hit with last minute lies or surprises, too late to counter at the last minute.
Now, as to Bill Clinton; an agreement must be reached in advance as to exactly what he will do or not do. Ambassador to the UN would be the best idea.
