Cindy McCain Flaunts Her PrivilegePosted on May 14, 2008By Joe Conason Double standards are endemic in American journalism. But Cindy McCain, wife of the Republican presidential candidate, displayed poor taste in flaunting her family’s special immunity from press scrutiny. Declaring on NBC’s “Today” that she would “never” release her income tax returns even if she becomes first lady, the Arizona beer heiress showed no concern that she and her husband will have to meet the same tests as other would-be White House occupants—ever. Unfortunately, Mrs. McCain’s arrogance is probably well founded. While her personal net worth is estimated somewhere north of $50 million, she can surely rely upon the discretion of right-wing media organizations and commentators, which so far have given her and her husband a free pass on the income tax question. In contrast to their unrelenting demands for absolutely complete disclosure by Bill and Hillary Clinton over alleged or suspected conflicts of interest, the so-called conservative media have remained mum about Mrs. McCain. That silence similarly contrasts with the hell raised four years ago over Teresa Heinz Kerry’s reluctance to reveal her tax returns alongside those of her spouse, the Democratic presidential nominee and senator, John Kerry. Back then The Weekly Standard ran a smirking headline calling her Mr. Kerry’s “sugar mommy” for a column that salivated over the “lavish lifestyle” and “vacation homes” to which her tax returns would draw attention. The Standard editors didn’t even pretend to any substantive concern. They just wanted to play the politics of envy and elitism. But the National Review’s editors cited weightier reasons for curiosity, including the very size of the Heinz Kerry holdings and the use of her money to finance her husband’s presidential campaign, “at least in its bleaker moments,” as well as the “potential ... for conflicts (or the perception of conflicts) of interest.” So did The Wall Street Journal, in an editorial that said the Kerrys would be “the richest couple ever to live in the White House. ... Their assets should be disclosed to the voters so that they can assess whether there are any potential conflicts of interest.” The same editorial noted that since Sen. Kerry was proposing to raise taxes on higher income brackets, “most people would probably like to know whether the Kerry household uses tax-avoidance techniques to avoid paying its ‘fair share.’ ” Advertisement Now comes Mrs. McCain, whose case suspiciously resembles that of Mrs. Kerry. Although she and her straight-talking husband keep their finances separate for tax purposes, her company plane has been flying him and his entourage of lobbyists around the country at bargain rates, a particular boon during the many months when his campaign was out of cash. As for conflicts of interest, the patina of reform has long since rubbed off Sen. McCain, whose penchant for using his office to assist donors with federal land swaps and other sweetheart deals should surprise no one paying close attention to his career. Is there further revealing information to be found in Mrs. McCain’s tax returns? Nobody knows except Cindy, but the clues provided in her husband’s returns would certainly tantalize those busybodies on the right, if only the McCains were Democrats. For instance, they appear to have used their charitable foundation, in part, to ensure that their children attended elite schools, by strategically donating very large sums to those institutions. They also appear likely to have benefited very handsomely from the Bush tax cuts, which Sen. McCain formerly opposed but whose extension he now supports in perpetuity. Yet Mrs. McCain is getting away with stonewalling on her taxes. “This is a privacy issue,” she said, and nobody has responded with the mockery directed at Mrs. Kerry. (Imagine the gale-force media uproar if the Clintons had refused to release their returns because they claimed to be protecting Chelsea.) Indeed, the deputy editorial page editor of The Wall Street Journal, who oversaw those august columns when they howled for disclosure from Mrs. Kerry in 2004, dismissed any concern over Mrs. McCain’s tax returns as “a fairly marginal issue.” The question that remains is whether other major media outlets will challenge the McCains to meet the same standard of disclosure demanded from Democratic political families. So far the record is not encouraging. Joe Conason writes for The New York Observer. Don’t be so hard on Cindy.
Anytime John boy hears someone bitching about his wife’s life of privilege, he gets so excited that he has to change his DEPENDS adult diaper.
John boy will gloriously carry on the Bush/Cheney Junta tradition of waging wars for peace and Wars for Israel.
As president, he vows to get revenge on his “gook” captors by closing his eyes and make believing that Iranians are the new “gooks” and by gosh, it’s Clobberin’ Time.
Oops, John boy got so excited at the thought of nuking Iran that he just dropped a fresh load into his DEPENDS.

There is only one way to put it: McCain is a fraud.
McCain’s laissez-faire approach to economics basically justifies a McCain do-nothing approach for any social need. After over 20 years as a notably ineffectual legislator, McCain found a way to distinguish himself during the feckless Bush years. Bipartisanship and common sense were scarce commodities, and wherever the possibilities of deals in the media spotlight existed, McCain was there.
He stuck conciliatory oars in negotiations for climate change, immigration, taxes and torture. While he blocked more able reformers from the compromise opportunity, usually his efforts fizzled, though some pro-business or pro-Bush agreements did develop that satisfied K Street or the Bush White House, namely the modified torture bill, and favorable tax provisions. Yet the media still polished his image.
Passage of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill was a notable achievement at the time though it is the only notable legislation he engineered during 25 years in the Senate but due to Republican antagonism to it, McCain rarely mentions it now. In spite a dearth of legislative accomplishment, McCain postures as a veteran statesman.
Not having any domestic plan of his own, McCain is now quick to latch onto Bushs tax cut for the rich. In fact, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, the overall effect of the McCain tax plan would be to reduce federal revenue by more than $5 trillion over 10 years. And most of that would go in the pockets of the rich.
His pandering continues as he endorses suspension of the federal gas tax, which funds our quickly eroding infrastructure. Four dollar a gallon gas would go to $3.82.
Getting back to the responsibility of the media, one truly wonders when real questions will be asked of John McCain. Their absence is especially evident after the Democrats presidential debate fiasco in Philadelphia. George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson managed to take half the program centering on already covered ground of pettiness and spectacle before discussing anything meaningful.
A liberal media does not exist, at least in most radio and television. The radical right is there and the corporate media is much less radical but still in league with the plutocratic elements in government.

When it comes to McCains principles, I believe Greenwald has him pegged. The issues vary, but the end results always seem to be the same.
Todays issue involves McCains principles and his wifes taxes. Yesterday, it was about his principles and Bushs torture powers. And as we can see, what was true then is also true now. The outcome of both issues is the same.
McCain opted for the political rewards of grandstanding on the issue while knowing that he had accomplished little, if anything, in the way of actually promoting his “principles.”

This argument of yours is all too common, wrong, and dangerous in that it alienates prospective voters from the democratic process. Why bother, after all, if the whole thing’s rigged against you?
Of course both parties are in favor of seeking and acquiring wealth. That’s the American dream, after all. It’s what drives our economy and has made us one of the dominant economic forces in the world (though that star is fading rapidly). Where Democrats and Republicans differ is in what those who achieve (or inherit) wealth owe back to the nation. Republicans think endowing Harvard and the local symphony is sufficient. Democrats think paying back through progressive taxes that underwrite social programs to level the field is the only fair system. Republicans think any restraints on industry and commerce compromise the creation of wealth, which will trickle down to the rest of us one day. Democrats believe that protections of worker’s rights, public health, and the environment are vitally important. Republicans want the New Deal to die - the quicker the better - and if the middle class dies with it, well, such is the wisdom of the market. The Democrats want to revive it, strengthen it, and expand its reach (though they differ a lot in what the latter means).
There IS a difference. But as long as people like you keep herding people into Nader-type camps, the Republicans will keep chipping away at what we hold dear.

Senator McCain, you are no George Bush, you can’t pull off ignorance enough to get away with his 3rd term, but nice try. The wife thing was an especially good attempt at showing your dominance and ability to handle situations, and also why you don’t think talking to leaders like the one from Iran. Can you say “yes dear” or “hen-pecked”. I can see you’re not used to being listened to. If you had played your cards correctly, and helped Hillary to become President, she might have taken you on as V.P. just for your ability alone. The ability to say “Yes, Maam” that is.

If you do not believe that the super-rich and uber-rich of this country live and play by different rules, then you haven’t been paying attention and are sadly mistaken.
There is no way on G-d’s green earth, that the shrub’s and the Darth Vader’s of this country are not enriching themselves every time that you go to the gas pump and the store. All is not well and we, the people, are now paying the price for not having paid attention to the political situation with a fine tooth comb.
Much to the chagrin of all of us, it is now possible to charge over $4.00 US for a gallon of gasoline and almost $5.00 US for a gallon of diesel fuel for the trucks that transport the goods to market. If you do not think that those people who trade commodities are not raking the cash in by the millions and billions, you have not been awake but sadly asleep at the wheel. We are not going to get our collective tails out of this mess until and only until we, the people take back the power that we have and exercise control over the corporations and government.
But, if you listen to the MSM, you will hear the mantra, that there is nothing we can do about anything, why fight city hall, you cannot win if you take on the big corporations. I, for one am interested in, not hearing about the status quo, but will listen to someone that speaks to me, that reaches me not only on an emotional level, but an intellectual level as well. Sadly, not one of the candidates has done this except Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich. We must now choose between the lesser of two weasels and that is truly a hard choice to swallow.
We the people, must take back the reins of government and level the playing field for all. This is not a country of have’s and have-not’s. But it has surely turned out that way. I, for one am looking for a whirlwind of voices, that will say, enough is enough. No longer will we stand for the rape and pillage of the of land, no longer will we stand for the taxation of the poor and middle class, while the wealthiest of our country, pay minimal or no taxes. I, hope that someone has the guts to stand up to the corporate thieves and say, part of doing business in our country, is hiring Americans and paying taxes on the profits that come from doing business here in America.
If, this cannot happen, and does not happen soon, then I truly fear that the American Experiment will collapse under the weight of corporate welfare and disintegrate by dint of the avarice and maliciousness of those to whom the people are no more than an easy way to make profit and support their lifestyle of ease and privilege.

Mr. Conason, you just don’t get it. There are those born to rule and there are those born to be ruled. This has been and continues to be the mantra of the traditional conservative/the American Republican.
The rulers have been chosen by god. They are born entitled (literally); they have privileges which you and I don’t have; to challenge their god-given rights to privacy or anything else is to challenge god. Therefore, to challenge the McCains is to challenge god.
Off topic, but does anyone else think the McCains are beginning to look more like mannequins than human beings?

It is a “fairly marginal issue”, although not for the reasons the WSJ editor perhaps had in mind. The unintended irony of such a characterization speaks to the essence of what’s really wrong with the whole one-party system in America. Both wings of this Party, Republicans and Democrats alike are presided over by, and represent the interests of, the filthy rich. That’s the real issue, not whether we get the gory details in all their lurid excesses in the tax return disclosures. The “politics of envy and elitism” is precisely what the Democrats should be running on, instead of always running away from. But how can they when they share the same elitist interests? The Clinton’s fortune is twice that what Mrs. McCain’s is estimated to be. And the Kerry’s dwarfs both. The entire Senate, as is well known, is a rich persons club. There’s an inherent ‘conflict-of-interest’ among all rich candidates of the Republi-crat Party with the toiling commoners they lord it over. The question that remains is whether major (and many minor) media outlets will challenge rich Republicans and rich Democrats to meet the same standard of living concerns as working class families. So far the record is not encouraging.

I don’t know, but something is brewing in the news and so far MSNBC is the only place I have seen covering this classic example of our congress at work and to what crooked ends all sides go to steal money(our taxes) and give it to the elites all the while hiding it in the facade of helping the needy.
Report thisI am talking about the current Farm Subsidies bill that congress has sent to the white house to be signed into law. Truly a classic example of bill that is worded to provide a majority of the 290billion dollar bill for nutritional programs for needy people.
But wrapped up in this bill are provisions for giving huge chunks of money to people who own land so that they will grow NOTHING. Want an idea of who these people are? I read on a news service once that these are the exclusive farmers that live in upper class parts of cities and have a country home(farm) for their getaways. Some of these jackels are retired professional athletes that just cannot do without some free income to boost their ridiculous net worth.
Where is the coverage about this. I would have thought that TruthDig here would have had posted on it. Maybe I have gotten the news too soon, but it should be a subject of great interest as it is a very broken part of our legislative process.
Well, nothing more until some site somewhere will post on this travisty.
Oh, w(the oxymoron)is set to veto this bill because it is ‘fiscally irresponsible’ to make himself appear in the good when he well knows that there are more than enough votes to override his veto which will make congress look bad.
Now, does anyone think that this does NOT need to be brought to the public’s attention?

Once again the Party of Hypocrisy raises its ugly little head. How anyone (but the rich) could continue to support these hypocritical cowards is beyond me. Ignorance plays a big part though since as is noted in the article, there’s a HUGE double standard in the MSM.
Normal people, you know those who actually have to work for a living and raise children, don’t hear about this kind of crap when they watch the evening news.
As Lincoln once said, “a house divided cannot stand”, and that’s exactly what is illustrated here. For those who are rich and powerful and Republican, there’s almost nothing they can’t do without any accountability. Break a few laws, no problem. Steal money from the taxpayers, no problem. Demand accountability from Democrats, yet provide none yourself, no problem, this is standard operating procedure.
For the rest of us, it’s a county of draconian laws (more people imprisoned in this so-called “land of the free” than anywhere else on EARTH) and mind-deadening TV designed to shut down the masses ability to discern what is actually best for them and the country overall.
Simply sickening and disheartening. Go to Hell Cindy! I hope you lose it all!

The Republican’s have habitually used this cry for disclosure of Democratic candidates and then when revealed have distorted the figures to prove that the Democratic candidates are compromised and quietly keep refusing to reveal equally honest accounting of their own financial dealing.
Cheney claiming he doesn’t know where his money is invested. Do you really believe that? Do you really believe that everytime you buy gasoline, you don’t enrich the Cheney bank account? Everytime the nation sends money to pay for over priced, un-bidded contracts to corporate monsters like Haliburton and Blackwater, that Cheney doesn’t know his wealth has risen once again?
Either make them all reveal all or fine those who refuse to reveal their finances and I mean big fines.
