Conservatives Beware

WASHINGTON—What’s the matter with conservatism?

Its problems start with the failure of George W. Bush’s presidency but they don’t end there. Inequality is rising and working-class voters are being hammered. The cost and availability of health coverage are a big problem, and some Republicans don’t want to talk about that simply because they see it as a “Democratic issue.”

Don’t take my word on this. The themes I just outlined come from two important new books written by conservatives. The authors are worried about their movement’s future, and accept—to use the language directed once upon a time against liberals—that the right is tired, short of ideas and mired in the past.

The appearance of these books is a sign of something deeper: Much as liberals and Democrats realized in the 1980s that their side needed to rethink old assumptions, the shrewdest conservatives understand that the old faith, if it goes unreformed, is in danger of dying out.

David Frum, a one-time speech writer for President Bush and the author of “Comeback: Conservatism That Can Win Again,” says nice things about the president but concedes he has “led his party to the brink of disaster.”

Frum is not one of those conservatives who think that running against government is always the right thing. “There are things only government can do,” he writes, “and if we conservatives wish to be entrusted with the management of the government, we must prove that we care enough about government to manage it well.”

Many on the right think there is no problem with conservatism today that doing a better job of imitating Ronald Reagan wouldn’t solve. But the 1980s were a long time ago. What made Reagan great, Frum argues, “was his ability to respond to the demands of his times. We must respond to the demands of ours.”

Frum acknowledges that the problem of economic inequality is real. “The American economy grew handsomely between 2001 and 2006,” he writes. “But over those five years, the income of the median American ... did not rise at all. The number of people in poverty rose by 5.4 million between 2000 and 2004.”

A concern for the working class animates the other hot, new critique of conservatism from the inside. Ross Douthat and Reihan Salam give their book “Grand New Party” (to be published in June) a long but revealing subtitle: “How Republicans Can Win the Working Class and Save the American Dream.”

They admit upfront the challenges and problems created by globalization: “the rise of the knowledge-based economy, growing outsourcing and the demise of lifetime employment, the expansion of credit card debt, the decline of retirement and health care security, the pressure from below created by unprecedented illegal immigration.”

Their last point about immigration might arouse some dissent from liberals, but not their conclusion: that “these developments of the last three decades have made American workers feel more insecure.” More pointedly, Douthat and Salam add that “the Republican Party has failed to adequately address these concerns.”

On policy, the books are less persuasive, partly because conservatism, almost by definition, has trouble achieving the level of intervention in the economy that the current inequities may require. Nonetheless, these writers at least acknowledge the need for public action to bring health coverage to everyone.

Both books stress the costs of family breakdown to Americans of modest means—and particularly to their children.

Here is an area where liberals could make common cause with these next-era conservatives. Douthat and Salam suggest expanding the current tax credit for children from $1,000 to $5,000. It’s a relief to see conservatives willing to make a link between economic forces and family life, something their more radically free-market comrades are rarely willing to do.

Two books do not a revolution make. But they are a symptom of a healthy dissidence within the conservative movement and a sign of its instinct toward survival.

“There is emerging within the Republican Party a very interesting debate about whether we need to change our approach, or just reassert the policies we already have,” Frum said in an interview.

Frum would like the heretical Republicans to come together to create their own version of the Democratic Leadership Council. The GOP sure could use something. A Pew Research Center survey released last week found that only 27 percent of Americans now identify themselves as Republicans, the lowest percentage in Pew’s 16 years of polling. If ever there was a moment for change agents within the nation’s conservative party, this is it.

The truth of what behind the conservative agenda is proclaimed in the May 15th Prophecy which has been the only source that has been 100% accurate about what really going on

Here is a excerpt from the post tittled “The Iran Symbol, The Falsifiers and the Republican Prophecy”

“May 15th Prophecy have shown you who is the working force behind the Ummah (See:Ummah and Shadows of the Uprooting)

The spirit is not limited to the activity of the Ummah put is also the primary and driving force behind the Religious Right Conservatism.

You can discern them by their lies and false since of support for Israel (the House of Judah).

They will tell you things like Judah is surrounded by “Islamic Fascists” that why you must stand against this evil. (Hint: support war on terror)

They will tell you Israel is good, and “Radical Islam” is bad, and God is on the side of Israel.

That why they preach the false doctrine of Gog and Magog to promote the idea that God is going to wipe out Iran and Russia while still leaving Israel standing. (Hint: the war on terror will achieve victory over Islamic fascism)

Then they tell Israel itchy ear that Islam will be defeated and their only worry is a “European” Rome empire but that threat is far in the future.

They do this all in the name of “Patriotism” to win the false “war on terror”

Thus saith the Word of God “All who preach this false doctrine shall drink the water of gall”

The real truth of God Word is in the May 15th Prophecy which have already declared unto you that Israel (the house of Judah) will be overran and plunder by the kingdom of the Beast they will utterly lose the “war on terror”

The continuation of the Lamentation 2:14 verse declare the difference between the May 15th Prophecy and the falsifying false prophets (Hal Lindsey, John Woolvard, Tim LeHaye, John Hagee , Jack Van Empee and Joel Rosenberg, Benny Hin...est.) just to name a few.

Listen to what Lamentation have to say about these false prophet who scratch the ear of Israel (the House of Judah)

“they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.”

The New International Version translate it

“they did not expose your sin, to ward off your captivity. The oracles they gave you were false and misleading”

The New Living Translation Tyndale Charitable Trust translate it

“They did not try to hold you back from exile by pointing out your sins. Instead, they painted false pictures, filling you with false hope.”

The Jerusalem Bible translate it

“They never pointed out your sin to ward off your exile, the visions they proffered you were false, fallacious, misleading”

And the American bible (Kenneth Taylor) translate it best

“They have not tried to hold you back from slavery by pointing out your sins, they lied and said all was well”

There you have it LastDayWatchers now you see why the hypercritical bastards preach a Gog and Magog and European Rome to sell you painted shams and raise money for support of Israel (the House of Judah)

“Inequality is rising and working-class voters are being hammered”
This is a failure????
This is the main goal of the Bush adminstration!
They have accomplished their only goal--make the rich richer.
No wonder he always has that smirk.

Conservative Yankee has it right...

...that’s exactly what’s wrong with both of the big parties---they’ve hijacked for themselves misleading labels.

Call me a disillusioned former conservative Repub who now styles himself a libertarian (note the lower-case “l").

^ Correction led the country into disaster. And it’s nice to hear him worry about the “party’s” future. Rather than joining those who are trying to deal with undoing the mess they have rendered. It’s party over country with this crowd don’t be duped.

As far as I’m concerned the Con’s can have the DLC. They have only served to appease the right and block any real political progress. Nixon would be considered “centrist” today.
I think, hope and pray the Democratic party is in process of marginalizing the DLC at the moment, should Obama prevail.

Frum should never be quoted by anyone.

First and foremost, Frum is not a conservative, he is a neo-con hack with few good ideas.  He seems to understand nothing of conservatism, its roots, and how its tenets are still relevant to saving this country.

Any, self-described ‘conservative’ that holds any affection for our current president, is completely deluded in their self-classification.  Bush has shown himself as an old-style liberal on almost every front.  Yes, his rhetoric panders to the unholy alliance between the Christian fundamentalists and the Republican party, but his actions show his true hero as Woodrow Wilson, not Jesus Christ.

Frum is a perfect example of the Republican party forsaking the libertarianism of the founding fathers for the liberalism of the Democratic party of 70 years ago.  This article hits the nail on the head when it talks of Republicans losing the war of ideas - where it makes a mistake, is assuming those exhausted ideas are in anyway conservative.

Republicans have bit by bit, given up on policies representing true liberty and freedom, for those of welfare and dependence (be it corporate or personal).  Maybe they did it because reelection was more important than ideals, and they correctly identified the shifting wants of the populace.  However, this move away from libertarianism will not only cost the party this election, it has cost them their soul.

The real problem is the word “conservative” has been hijacked by folks who have no idea of true conservative-ism.

In fairness, the word “liberal” was hijacked by the same people.

Re: Conservative Yankee

How true.  Traditionally and classically a conservative was one who believed that there are those who were born to rule and those who were born to be ruled.  (Certainly justified a monarchy)

America, on the other hand is a liberal idea - classless.  One’s station in life is achieved, not granted by way of his birth.

Today’s American conservative operates, inexplicably, from three premises - no taxes, yes to drilling in Alaska, and justified torture of suspected terrorists - as expressed recently by a well-known, self-identified conservative.

When Money Does Not Equate To Free Speech.

Only than will we be a Democracy. I would like to see that ballots for all offices have listed all candidates in the primary elections and the top 3 vote getters be on the November election. In this way there would be no party primary, open to one and all. Of course something like having a thousand signatures to keep the policy honest from just any Yea-Hoo from being on the ballot. If Television advertising were eliminated, with town halls being broadcast, would also make the field more honest. The supreme court has been the biggest stumbling bloc to the inane system we call democracy.

The implosion of both these "Parties' Would Benefit

It’s time to end the Domination of these two archiac Ineffective Organizations. the first benefit would be the Actual ability to support a party becaus it’s Platform is one you agree with throughout. Enouhg highjacking and back room rangling. also then no one can Hide their agenda behind an overall doctrine. such as the Relgious Right- they held the Repubs hostage . Make them get theri own party so WEKnow exactly who is being voted in. Make the Corporationists make a Logo for their aims and Goals. Let those who against War regardless of situtaions let it be known. Why do we Only have 2 Sides of the Aisle? Of all th ecountrries in th eWorld- we are the only ones Limited in Our Choices.
By Who- By the Media’s Lack of Exposure & equal time, by the Campaign financing , By the Outdated election Process (we have the Tech to do away with lenghty party nominations, Everyone could vote on the Same Day- Stumping is unnecessary and Every Count CAN count)
The Dems have moved more towards and more like the Repugs. This Old ‘Dem’ has already put a Fork in them- their Done.Far too many ‘special Interests’ whos doctrines can not gain enough suport on their own have contaminated Both.So let them not be given support through compromises -from either the Party or those who wish to ride their coat tails.
I’d love to see a beautiful combination of the basic principles of both (A small EFFECIENT Governing Body- who stays out of our personal business)- The Purple Party!
