McCain’s Very Own Farrakhan

By Joe Conason

Whatever their true private beliefs, presidential candidates in America are constantly required to provide proofs of faith, often through their connections with various religious figures. Benedictions from the pulpit bestow an aura of righteousness—except, of course, when the pastor or minister is a disreputable kook whose endorsement should be an embarrassment.

In recent weeks, both Barack Obama and John McCain have suffered exactly this kind of indignity, under very different circumstances. And their contrasting responses revealed not only aspects of their own characters, but also the enduring prejudices of the national media covering this year’s campaign.

For an African-American politician seeking to attract voters of all ethnicities and persuasions, there could hardly be a less desirable supporter than Louis Farrakhan, the aging leader of the Nation of Islam. As the media never tire of reminding us, Farrakhan is a habitual bigot whose utterances have repeatedly denigrated Jews, Catholics, Caucasians and homosexuals, among others, in seeking to inflame his followers against these supposed enemies.

He detects conspiracies of “international bankers,” whose machinations he blames for all the world’s troubles dating back to World War II. He looks forward to a time when the Holy Land will be “cleansed by blood,” as he exclaimed in a sermon not so long ago. He warns that the evil ones ruling the planet will someday be destroyed for their sins, while those who obey his admonishments (and tithe to his organization) will be saved.

Well aware of Farrakhan’s record, since both of them reside in Chicago, Obama forthrightly rejected the support of the unsavory minister. Unfortunately, his own Christian pastor, Jeremiah Wright, has chosen to associate himself with the Nation of Islam, which may well create problems for Obama—but at least he has clearly separated himself from the poisonous Farrakhan philosophy.

By contrast, McCain went out of his way last week to accept the endorsement of a Christian pastor with a deeply disturbing record of bigotry and extremism. That would be John Hagee, a Texas televangelist whose career is chronicled in “God’s Profits: Faith, Fraud, and the Republican Crusade for Values Voters,” a new book by investigative reporter Sarah Posner. As Posner reveals, Hagee is the kind of evangelical minister who has anticipated the end of the world for decades now, even as he promises untold riches to those who tithe to his ministry. He is an ardent warmonger who, like Farrakhan, seems to imagine a Middle East cleansed by blood—except that in his fantasies, the Christians will be saved while everyone else burns. (The saved won’t include members of the Catholic Church, however, an institution he despises and denounces as venomously as Farrakhan does.)

But the perspectives of these two self-proclaimed men of God resemble each other even more closely in certain ways. Hagee, too, promotes hatred of homosexuals and demands that women submit to men. And he also imagines a conspiracy by international bankers, the Bavarian Illuminati, the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations and other shadowy groups to deliver America into the hands of Satan. All that verbiage is merely code for traditional anti-Semitism, as Hagee surely knows because, like Farrakhan, he blames the Jewish people for their own persecution, including the Holocaust, as he explained a few years ago in his book “Jerusalem Countdown.”

Yet, for reasons that seem more related to race than reason, the assorted inanities of Hagee are acceptable while those of Farrakhan are not, at least in the higher circles of the Republican Party and the national media. No matter how many times Obama rejects the Nation of Islam leader, a television anchor or debate moderator will demand that he do so again, if only to mention their names in the same breath.

Meanwhile, McCain escapes the hard questions that should be asked about his embrace of Hagee, whose ugly words and mad prophecies ought to repel him. Eight years ago, the San Antonio minister was among the political preachers, including Pat Robertson and the late Jerry Falwell, who denounced McCain and proclaimed George W. Bush to be the Lord’s chosen candidate.

Back then, the Arizona Republican proved his maverick courage when he rebuked them all as “agents of intolerance.” He has sought to court their favor ever since—and it is sad to see him genuflect now to the same kind of demagogue he once mocked.

I wonder if McCain has considered selling his soul on eBay?

Anything for the campaign!

John McBush will do anything to promote his campaign, including accepting the support of religious kooks. Is he already too old to understand how this makes him look - like a political prostitute?

A good informative article about the increasing influence of theology in American politics. Though I like the essence of this comparison Joe Conason makes between Farrakhan and John Hagee and its implication for the politics of choosing candidates, I was surprised about labeling Hagee as anti-Semetic. To my best knowledge, based on my recent readings of two recent books on Christian-Zionists, Hagee is an ardent supporter of Israel and its policies of occupation and colonization. So by MaCain embracing this fanatic fundamentalist, we must be greatly alarmed about the continued disastrous foreign policy under a McCain administration.

Hagee is a dangerous, arrogant, hypocritical religious fanatic, eager for world war three, which he calls Armageddon.

Ummmm

So, do you think that the only problem with Jeremiah Wright is that he associated with Farrakhan?

“Bavarian Illuminati, the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations—merely code for traditional anti-Semitism” ????????

Sorry Joe, this sort of drivel won’t win the argument.

John Hagee: Pastor or Deceiver?

With the Christian Zionists endorsement, will John McCain really win the presidency?  I seriously doubt that John Hagee, has that much power in the world of Christian fundamentalism, and the requisite credentials to give someone a boost in the race for the presidency.  John Hagee has always been on the fringes of the televangelist world and he has never had quite the following that either Pat Robertson or Trinity Broadcasting has. He has distanced himself purposely from these groups and rarely associates with them.  Yet here he is being given some “play” by the MSM, and for what, endorsing a person for president, who, has already stated that if he has to go up against Barack Obama, he will lose the race. How are we as critical thinkers hoodwinked by a second rate pastor of a church that is clearly looking for something that is so evil, Armageddon, to happen?  I would doubt that if all of his teachings were heard that he would have quite the reputation that he is supposed to have. John McCain, clearly needs to repudiate that endorsement, if he does not then like any person, he should be held accountable for the people whom he seeks out to be his friends. We know John McCain, is actually the shrub lite and he will not agree to talk with any enemy, but will isolate the U.S. from more and more of the international community.  Can we, the American people afford another 4-8 years of an isolationist and unilateral regime, such as we have had with the shrub and his cronies, the Neo-cons? I would hope that the American people would vote with their thinking caps on and decide that enough is enough, and give our economy and reputation a chance to heal from the debacle of the Neo-Cons imperial presidency ideal.

a dissapoinment, but no surprise

For a brief moment in time, when John McCain was recovering from being Swift Boated by the Bush/Cheney apparatus and John McCain was speaking truth to power, I thought well I don’t agree with his politics, but I would consider him as an alternative to voting for Clinton, as I have had enough of Clinton Opportunism.

And, Then It Happened, John McClain forgot his admirable stand against torture, suddenly he is contantly being embraced by Bush, whose lies have damaged him in the past and now he is embracing the very Religious (self appointed)leaders who would bring to this country the kind of chilling behavior and society that would destroy the country.

So not John McCain, a physically brave man, is John McCain the less than morally brave man, with an appalling need to be President, more than to be right.

He won’t get my vote, or that of any sane person.

The Double Speak of Religion

First I must give it to both of them for seeing the ‘Banking’Beasts. But as ususal some reality mixed in to fantasy to help boost it’s validity.
Family Values- families are made up of various people thus Value is placed on each-including a gay son or daughter
Pro Life- should include the time Following Birth Too. These are really only ‘Pro- birthers’
Their Rhetoric is filled with these words that have nothing to do with their ruling doctrines.
These Snake Oil Dealers have revealed themselves not so much by their words but by their actions and inactions.
Where are they in the Global Warming Debate, War Debate, Mortage lending swindles, futures markets on food, human labor...They do not support peace, Human rights and the environement...The ‘gift’s we have been given - by God or nature- What a foundamental Sin.

Too bad that the Catholic Church got as much bad press from Hagee as they deserved - they have missed out on the opportunity of teaming up with a Neocon pope, uhh. But Joe Conason is suspiciously way off the mark in his assessment of Hagee as a Jew-hater. Louis Farrakhan has a right as the head of the Nation of Islam but he has missed something about Hagee, though.

These are the Christian Zionists of Texas after all and Hagee has gone out of his way to excuse the Jews for their part in setting Jesus up for execution by the Roman colonial authorities in Jerusalem. Such is the warped mentality of these people that they actually worship whatever the Jews do even at the expense of the murder of their own Messiah and Christian leader..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8khCJTDD44

Supposed * Christian * preacher John Hagee clearly states that he believes Jesus didn’t come to Earth to be the messiah, that Jesus never claimed to be the messiah in word or in deed and that it isn’t Jewish people’s fault that they missed the messiah, because it’s Jesus’ fault for never offering

Thanks for keeping that 2,000-year old antisemitic libel going, Chalmers. What you write serves no useful purpose other than to spread hatred and animosity.

McCain is an officer but no gentleman

As a retired military officer, I think McCain has blown several opportunities to show his character. When a woman questioner referred to Hillary as “the bitch”, McCain laughed instead of chewing her out. McCain also would have won my vote if he had denounced the grotesque 500 pound redneck bigot “hoggy” hagee as the scum of the earth which he surely is. I respect McCain’s proven courage but I suspect his judgement. No matter how the Iraq debacle turns out, it was a terrible mistake to pre-emptively invade.
