It is not democracy which “demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values”. That is the original religious teachings whcih were always universal and it is the minds of self-seeking men and women which have degraded that just as they degrade their other freedoms until democracy can no longer exist and their administratuions are so utterly corrupted and usurped. I understand your confusion in attempting to understand or otherwise rationalize the motivation behind Chalmers’ prolific bullshit.

I TOO, generally give people the benefit of the doubt, and specifically on these blogs, where we are pretty much forced to take people at face value, based solely on what they write themselves, or what they choose to share from some other source.

So, it’s only fair and reasonable to extend the benefit of the doubt, or to try to ask questions and/or clarify, -from the person themselves- what it is that they are actually saying, or what their positions actually are, and why.

BECAUSE...reasonable people CAN disagree, on interpretations of just about ANYTHING!! I mean, that’s simply the way the world and humankind operate in what is allegedly a democratic society.

However, there are in fact abnormalities that exist among the population as well, and they are often well hidden, or go unrecognized until one has actually followed the pattern for a while.

Chalmers is one of them, and again..he’s not alone. There are many posters on the board who will posit the same ideological stuff, such as Obama, (or anybody really) is ‘evil’ or ‘frightening’ or blah, blah, blah. And, they can NEVER point to WHY they believe that. It’s all very bizarre, but it is THEY who are abnormal, and have the ‘issues’, whatever they may be.

Chalmers has a BUNCH of them, and it would take a genuinely brilliant and experienced forensic psychiatrist some time to get through them all.

I am admittedly NOT qualified to do that, and I don’t believe that most of us on this forum are. I AM ‘qualified’ enough though, to know that he’s crazier than bat shit, which is why there’s little point in throwing good money after bad, (if I have that the right way around) in terms of spending any more time in responding to him, unless it serves as a warning for other posters.

This absolutely says IT ALL!! And, as often as I’ve tried, I simply could never say it better, or as succinctly. 

On the positive side…while this Internet capacity does have this down side, (ANY vegetable head, tumor-ridden brain cell can post something on it) the up side is that we also have exposure to people of reason, among the same population, and THAT is a good thing.

Imagine for a moment, (because it’s actually a reality in many places on the globe) that you were locked up with the likes of a Chalmers, say even as a kid or a spouse, or an employee, etc, etc. And, you had no exposure to anything or anyone ‘normal’ or even simply any other mentality or way of thinking/seeing/interpreting the world around you? Well, YOU know the results…there is a huge likehood, that you would wind up with a mentality just as messed-up as his. This is, at least in part, how such insanity manages to recycle itself.

But, I STILL believe that these types are becoming the exception among us, as evidenced by the mostly reasonable and logical minds that prevail on these blogs, and even within the general population. I want to believe that these primary elections, and the whole process, imperfect though it may be, is evidence that people in general, are mostly operating within a generally agreed upon sense of what is best for the common good, which by nature of it, includes them. So, MORE people are able to view the ‘big picture’ as may have been possible prior to the introduction of the Internet.

Meantime, people like Chalmers, (and he’s not alone in this social-psychological pathology) can be more easily ‘spotted’ as a danger of which to be aware. It probably IS important to know that people like him ARE ‘out there’ so as to not be taken in or otherwise led astray by them. I pass this philosophy on to my students and other kids from time to time, even some adults.

Reality:
It’s going to be either Obama or Clinton against McCain.  I have no problem voting for either of them over McCain. 

I know the consultants never think about what happens to the nation if their candidate loses, but we Americans must.  They wanted Romney because they thought he was easier to beat, as would be Huckabee.  But as bad as McCain might be, I have no doubt that Romney or Huck would be 10x worse.

Actually, if you LOOK at their policies, Obama is far more conservative than Clinton--even in their health care plans.  Obama is probably the better candidate--he appeals to the “I’m not right wing but I don’t like the Clintons type”, has great intelligence and charisma, and is, of course carrying the “first to..” banner.  Clinton is clearly far more experience, knowing who to appoint, knowing how things work, etc.  She’s also always been left of Bill.  Her BIG advantage is she has no more skeletons in her closet.  Her big disadvantage is many people have a visceral hatred of her and she’s a motivator--of opponents.

The reasons Chalmers gives don’t make any sense:  that Obama is “evil” because in the strong anti-Iraq war speech that he gave in October 2002 he said he “did not oppose all wars” - just stupid ones. It is even more absurd, if possible, when he calls Obama “anti-Christian” because he said in one speech that if we took the Sermon on the Mount literally, we would not even have an army or a defense department. How is this anti-Christian, for Christ’s sake? Mike Huckabee is the “Christian” candidate and he wants a big increase in the size of the military budget to pump up the Zionist-Crusader alliance against the Muslims. Now there’s a real Christian for you.

Sure, any teenager or vegetable-brained dittohead can make a U-Tube video, cutting out some clips and stringing them together in whatever way they want. Did you see this other one where a guy claiming to be a limo driver says he snorted coke in a limo with Obama while Obama smoked crack and then gave him a blow job? The guy is wearing a big cap that shades his eyes and can’t spell. It was a one-day wonder on some web sites.  Looks like it was made by the same lowbrow production company. Or maybe Eric Cartman.

I don’t understand Chalmer’s motivation. For quite a while I thought we were on more or less the same wavelength, Kucinich progressives in agreement on most issues. but as soon as I said I supported Obama as the best candidate with a real chance to win, it became clear that he had vehement objections to Obama. At first I thought, well, he’s just one of those diehard Kucinich people who talk about “Republicrats” and there being no difference between one “establishment” candidate and another. I have been trying to convince these good people that they are dooming themselves to perpetual political frustration this way and they will have a “place at the table” if they support Obama, because I believe this represents our best hope as progressives.

At this point Chalmers seems to be supporting Clinton against Obama, since it is no longer possible to support Kucinich, who is struggling to keep his congressional seat at this point. I say Obama looks more progressive, is supported largely by small donations from the Net, and does not have the longstanding ties to big corporations that Clinton has, which progressives like I thought Chalmers was have been railing against for years. Clinton represents the establishment of the Democratic Party, the DLC, the party machinery. Obama is anti-establishment. He is an insurgent. He represents what Howard Dean calls “the Democratic wing of the Democratic party”.

I can’t believe you keep putting this link up there. This video was obviously a product of the Republican smear machine, and it is made to appeal to persons of the lowest degree of education and political awareness. I listened to the whole speech when Obama gave it, and this video is a laughably egregious misinterpretation of its meaning. Only the most gullible, ignorant person could give it any credibility. I mean yeah, the price of a barrel of oil has gone from $20 to $100 in 6 years, but that hasn’t saved OUR ‘economy’ only Exxon’s. (and their buddies of course).

So, while it’s true that the ‘war on terror’ will go on until the last drop has been stolen, (unless a new administration calls a halt, and that would take a while, for the same reason that one cannot stop a train on a dime) it’s never been ‘our’ economy that’s been propped up by the theft. Only ‘their’ economy, as evidenced by Exxon’s most recent posted profits. Each quarter, for the past 28 of them, their profits are larger than the quarter before. They are always RECORD profits. Not OUR profits..THEIR profits.

For all intents and purposes, ‘our’ economy has already ‘collapsed’.

Osama saw us spend the Soviet Union into the ground.  It took a long time, because the Russkis are pretty gritty people, but we did it.  Realizing, perhaps, that Americans—who’ve never had to fight on their own soil, who’ve never been tested by seeing their cities bombed and besieged—would be easier to panic, Osama did what he could with what he had at his disposal.  AND IT’S WORKING!!  Three planes, a couple of buildings and a death toll that wouldn’t account for the first ten minutes of D-Day...and the Americans, scared witless, are—you got it—spending themselves into beggary.

To my way of thinking voting got us into this mess, so it is not going to get us out. We are presented with very seriously flawed characters. So they have a sand box for me. Allow me that foolish indulgence.

The best way to defeat the system is not to use the system. If you pay income taxes, don’t. If you use federal reserve notes, stop. There are barter systems to use. Don’t use their drugs, or their schools.

One of the most hated peoples to the system are aboriginals.  Indians had no use for silver or gold; they used barter. They had their own medicines. They had their own ways to live off the land. Many of them were migratory tribes. How do you tax a people on their land, if they are free roaming? So the Indians had to be killed.

I remember a story of how the English did not even want to waste their best men on “the likes of them”. They did not even want to risk the lives of soldiers to kill them off. So the commander of English Canada hatched a plot to give the Indian emissaries beautiful, silver boxes with the scrapings of small pox remenants. The emissaries were instructed that the boxes had healing medicine in them to heal their peoples with. But the boxes could not be opened until they were among their kind. As you can imagine the frontiers of Canada were well cleared of the natives.

One candidate said the system is rigged and corrupt and the voters rejected him.So if you are left with candidates who are for status quo and that is larger and larger military spending who is to blame.The other America which is most of us will rue the day they rejected the John Edwards candidacy.

This threat has been ginned up by our own military-industrial complex which is pocketing untold trillions of dollars “defending” us from it. It profits from war. It haa no interest in making us “more secure”, on the contrary, the less secure we are, the more money it makes.

Hillary is not going to do anything to fundamentally change this. Obama just might have the guts to do something about it.

For this regime, the very top crimes, (the ultimate taboo) is the torture and the preemptive strike on a sovereign nation state without UN approval.

Article of the UN Charter forbids the use of force except in the case of self-defense, so that would pretty much ALWAYS rule out preemptive strikes, although there are exceptions, since no nation can or would be expected to wait until they’ve actually been attacked, in order to act in self-defense.

SO...THAT’S why there is the UN Security Council. They can and do assess the possibilities of these possible needs for one country to defend itself against a probable or possible attack by another, and then they can approve a resolution for pre-emptive action, of which there are many types that can be effective, PRIOR to just bombing the hell out of another nation. (sanctions, etc)

HOWEVER...as most of us have come to learn, (I hope) the UN would NOT approve a resolution to attack Iraq in a preemptive strike despite the fact that 9/11 had been created exactly for this purpose...to give George the excuse to attack anybody on the globe in the name of ‘the war on terror’. So, they did it anyway, minus the required resolution. That alone made it an illegal attack, in violation of International Law.

And, the use of force for the purpose of self-defense OBVIOUSLY doesn’t allow the OCCUPATION of another sovereign state, and the theft of its property/land/natural resources. So, even if there had been a legitimate, (rather than a cooked up/created/false pretense) reason to ‘defend ourselves’ from any enemy, it damn sure didn’t mean ‘defending ourselves’ by permanent occupation of their territory. So, more war crimes.

There is also a long list of duties of occupation. (Like, in those instances where a country has been legally occupied for the purposes of intervention, and permitted by resolution from the UN). In that case as well, the occupiers (Dick Bush and Cable) have also violated multiple laws, failing to provide security for the civilian population, and failing to provide for their basic needs. Matter of fact, prior to Saddam’s deposition, the civilians of that nation did get to eat, and go to school and to work, and they had housing, electricity, sewage, etc, etc…ya know. the standard stuff that human most human societies pretty much depend on. So, there’s a whole bunch more laws that have been violated.

Anyway, you can add to the list Crimes Against the Peace and Crimes Against Humanity, but you’re right that they do overlap. The list is so long now, that I’ve lost track.

Oh, they also fall into the Kleptocrat category of war criminals, for the theft of OUR monies and natural resources, as well as those of Iraq and Afghanistan. One of Africa’s many dictators is at the top of the Kleptocrat list, (I can’t think of his name right now). Or..he was until Dick Bush came along.

I’m pretty sure this is the worst regime since Hitler, and they’ve actually done far more killing, since the bush team is definitely a transnational terrorist organization. Makes those other so-called terrorists look like a group of rowdy delinquents, but not much more.

Over 50 years?  Well, I believe the next figure after trillions is...quadrillions.  It’s gotta be close.

Someone please come up with a ballpark figure of all the money—putting aside the cost in human lives and opportunities lost—we have spent on defense of this country over the past 50 years.  Defense Dept, CIA, DIA, NSA, etc.  How many trillions have been poured into guns and bullets and aircraft carriers, soldiers, spies and bureaucrats in the name of defending our country.  And today, in 2008, after all the expense and at the inevitable cost of short-changing other long-festering problems, we’re scared witless by a ragtag band of “evil doers”.  Boy, talk about money misspent.

Now I’m sure we’ve gained some security over the decades by this effort but, please, we need to re-examine our priorities and our sense of proportion in our responses to the challenges we face.  Our entire culture in the 21st century cannot be defined by the threat of terrorism, real or imagined.

Impeachment is off the table, so every one of our representatives in Washington should be off the table.  Throw the bums out, bums used here is a polite word.

We voted for Change last year, and the rule of law has been trashed, congress has turned into yes men for special interests, lobbyists and the lying bush.

We are losing our jobs, our rights and the cast system is becoming something we will have to accept.  The hand single handed lying bush and congress have not protected the constitution.  They should all be thrown from office.

If the “leadership” on the Hill had any calcium in their spines they would take Bush’s budget and simply sit on it. They don’t have to do anything with it. For all intents and purposes, it’s only a “wish list” from the President. The Constitution gives budgetary power to the Congress.

But I think we all know that will never happen. They lack the political leadership, will, and the backbone necessary to stop this insanity.

Scheer makes good points about getting a handle on extreme waste in “defense” spending.

From “homeland security” to unlimited occupation of Iraq, billions in pork have been thrown around to political cronies bellying up to the federal hog trough as they have looted the U.S. treasury.

Intelligent future U.S. military and intelligence operations must be thought through carefully.

Weapons systems and other hardware should also be funded in an intelligent way.

And, we might even consider savings and other significant advantages in increasing funding for “peace operations.”

This involves training for U.S. personnel, maintaining adequate logistics capabilities, implementing different kinds of information/communications operations and other activities.

Everyone seems to agree that it’s time for “change.” We can change our defense operations in very postive ways. Thoughts along these lines in the article ...
