The Legacy of Bush II

Curb your enthusiasm. Even if your favored candidate did well on Super Tuesday, ask yourself if he or she will seriously challenge the bloated military budget that President Bush has proposed for 2009. If not, military spending will rise to a level exceeding any other year since the end of World War II, and there will be precious little left over to improve education and medical research, fight poverty, protect the environment or do anything else a decent person might care about. You cannot spend well over $700 billion on “national security,” running what the White House predicts will be more than $400 billion in annual deficits for the next two years, and yet find the money to improve the quality of life on the home front.

The conventional wisdom espoused by the mass media is that Bush’s budget is a lame-duck DOA contrivance, but that assumption is wrong. The 9/11 attacks have been shamefully exploited by the military-industrial complex with bipartisan support to ramp up military expenditures beyond Cold War levels. This irrational spending spree, which accounts for more than half of all federal discretionary spending, is not likely to end with Bush’s departure. Which one of the likely winners from either party would lead the battle to cut the military budget, and where would the winner find support in Congress? Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have treated the military budget as sacrosanct with their Senate votes and their campaign rhetoric. Clinton is particularly clear on the record as favoring spending more, not less, on the military.

John McCain, who previously distinguished himself as a deficit hawk and was almost in a class by himself in taking on the rapacious defense contractors, has thrown in the towel with his inane support for staying in Iraq till “victory,” even if it should take a century. It is simply illogical to call for fiscal restraint while committing to an open-ended war in Iraq that has already cost upward of $700 billion. Bush’s request for $515.4 billion for the Defense Department doesn’t even include the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which accounted for nearly $200 billion over the last budget year and which will cost at least $140 billion in 2009. Add to those numbers $17.1 billion for the Department of Energy’s weapons program and over $40 billion for the Department of Homeland Security and other national security initiatives spread throughout the federal government, and you’ll see that my $700-billion figure underestimates the hemorrhaging.

McCain knows, and has frequently stated as a Senate watchdog, that much of the military spending is wastefully superfluous for combating terrorists who lack any but the most rudimentary weapons. Bush totally betrayed his campaign 2000 promise to reshape the post-Cold War U.S. military when he seized upon the 9/11 attack as an opportunity to reverse the “peace dividend” that his father had begun to return to taxpayers. Instead, Bush II ushered in the most profligate underwriting of weapons systems that are grotesquely irrelevant for combating terrorism.

The U.S. already spends more than the rest of the world combined on its military, without a sophisticated enemy in sight. The Bush budget cuts not a single weapons system, including the most expensive ones, those designed to combat a Soviet military that no longer exists. Those sophisticated weapons have nothing to do with combating terrorism and everything to do with jobs and profits that motivate both Democrats and Republicans in Congress. It is not known whether Osama bin Laden even possesses a rowboat in his naval arsenal, but that won’t stop Joe Lieberman from pushing, as is his habit, for an increase in the defense budget to double the funding for the $3.4-billion submarines built in his home state of Connecticut. Nor does the collapse of the old Soviet Union—and with it the need for enormously expensive stealth aircraft to evade radar systems the Soviets never built—dissuade congressional supporters of those planes from pushing for more, not less, than Bush is requesting. Nor does wasting an additional $8.9 billion on ICBM missile defense have anything to do with stopping terrorists from smuggling a suitcase nuke into this country.

The centerpiece of the Bush legacy is a “war on terror” based on a vast disconnect between military expenditures and actual national security requirements that the presidential candidates all fully understand. The question is whether the voters and media will force them to face that contradiction or whether we’re in for more of the same—no matter how much the candidates go on about change.

Doug:

You said, “Then again, BO doesn’t really seem to care whether his “quite riot” turns nasty as long as he is in control.”

Ah!  But it is clear that he is no longer in complete control of his runaway cult of personality - and it is getting progressively uglier and harder to control.  We have seen some of that right here on LieDig, but it is also happening in the bricks and mortar world; I come up against with many of Obama’s supporters and volunteers on a daily basis.

Perhaps these people don’t actually know something we do, Paracelsus. Not voting in a decisive election to end the GWOT is like saying you are no longer interested in human evolution upon Earth. Only the deluded or the perfected souls would dare say such a thing. But actually a perfected Buddha would defer to the human necessity and its huffing and puffing through evolution while the Fabians are so totally up themselves nowadays.....

As we know, HRC is not Helena Rubenstein so she will most probably dump AIPAC - at least after the election. They are already ‘on the nose’ and the time has come for the USA to divest themselves of this malicious bedbug, uhh.

Too bad about BO, though. The days of the Polish government-in-exile (version 2) and their monarchy are OVER!!! It was the workers and a common peasant, Lech Walensa, who put an end to Communism. Lets not forget that the Catholic Church and the elitists had little or nothing to do with it.

Retroactively recognizing the legitimacy of the Polish “Government in Exile” does nothing to return the age of chivalry never mind the monarchist regimes of the past. They have already more or less gone the way of the dinosaurs and what ever was chivalry but a bunch of smelly rude horse soldiers anyway, uhh?

So we come to the end of yet another dinosaur of the cold war era. The last one remaining, in fact. It is the militarist state of the USA and all that it entails. The age of global warming and climate change is now decidedly upon us all everywhere. Not even the Neocons (pope included) can command the tide now.......

That includes Israel which can see its peoples die of thirst or freeze in the dark unless it is willing to co-operate with other peoples and nations in the region in future. All the nuclear missiles and all the nuclear aircraft carrier attack groups and nuclear submarines in the world will never change what is going to happen next!

The Bush Legacy is just as full as a legacy can get. where to begin? Those who came & continue to come home alive from Iraq sans limbs, eyes, and/or faces. The VA that will not or cannnot care for them. Those who came home dead. The foreclosures. The bodies floating in New Orleans. Bush standing in front of the statue giving his cocky speech about recovery for New Orleans. His refusal to almost 20 countries who wanted to help the Golf Coast recovery. The FEMA trailers sold to us, the poor taxpayers, by Bush’s buddies. The FEMA trailers full of asbestos. The trailers that were put in a hurricane region to begin with. Poor children refused good health care. All children who must forsake learning to take test after test after test. Teachers who cannot teach beccause them must spend all their time preparing children for tests. Completey porous borders and coasts that should have been sealed immediately after 9/11. The destruction of as much flora and fauna as possible. I don’t know how they got away with a marine habitat in Hawaii? Hmmm? Maybe some good lobbies? Oh let us pray for better better lobbies to stop mountain top mining. That is where the land is destroyed and the people are getting sicker and poorer everyday. The mining companies “restore” the vegetation with bamboo. Deers, skunks, rabbits, rattlesnakes, bears, robins, owls don’t like bamboo. That doesn’t matter. Bush needs the poor people to go to his illegal invasion to come home sans limbs, eyes and/or faces or dead. Hey at least, the wealthy got tax cuts! Do you think Bush hears from G-d? Or do you think he is channeling Hitler?

Sorry to discover that you have been abusing children in your, uhh, profession in the California state education department, cyrena. Also a disappointment that they have foolishly allowed you to perpetrate your hate messages to “students” and that you most probably abuse the more naive adults who are misfortunate enough to cross your path aw well.

Such are the distortions of some African-American supporters of Barack Obama who wish to take their “I want a black president” rhetoric to the extent of a malicious racist anti-white revenge agenda of their own making.  Then again, BO doesn’t really seem to care whether his “quite riot” turns nasty as long as he is in control. No wonder then that other minority groups have shunned this “migrant”.

Your malicious attacks on me in the past several weeks are now apparently supported by those who blog here but who actually do work for the Obama’s The Ring campaign and also run blogs on his website. That is very shoddy. Obviously morals don’t go very far in a country which will once again be torn apart by race riots very soon. Just as with Britain and Sharia law, there is a limit, you know.

A person from Kenya is hardly one who could be relied upon to do any other than run the country for the benefit of his own ethnic group just as Saddam Hussein did in Iraq. The white majority and other minority groups will suffer. The Asians and the Hispanics will be first.......

Part 1....

As for spirituality, any person who has actualy “heard God’s spirit beckoning” him or her knows that it isn’t a “he” or a “she”. It is both beyond the human and the worldly. But regardless anyone who has “submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth” would never then go on to make the kinds of misleading statements that Obama has. A “higher truth” cannot be “summoned" , either. Back to merely “teaching the scripture to slaves” without taking the trouble to actually free them as Buddha once did.

But perhaps BO does want to be another murderous warmonger like Abe Lincoln was and to start another civil war so that he can once again fill “the crucible of the sword” with white mens’ blood? These evil deeds are not “the judgments of the Lord” . Tyoically, as a legalist and not a genuine humanist, Obama then uses the timeworn excuse that “our law is by definition a codification of morality, much of it grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition...” , itself a historical misinterpretation of the mission and life of Jesus.

That only ever validates the bloodthirsty history of the old tetamant Zionist Jews and the Catholic church’s 1,000 year-old anti-everything-and-everyone military crusades - and the judiciary and the government (and AIPAC) by reference no matter how corrupt they are. Is that in any way “progressive" ? And strange how these first-generation migrants can then turn and say “...during our founding...” and refer to the past 400 years as if they were always present and you are dumb enough to accept that and to believe them.

And does Obama really want to have “only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America...”. Which passages of Scripture then should guide his public policy? It certainly wouldn’t be “the Sermon on the Mount - a passage that is so radical that it’s doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application” because he has already ridiculed Christian teaching and likened Jesus’ words to the old Jews’ “slavery is ok and that eating shellfish is abomination” and their “stoning your child if he strays from the faith”.

...../part 2....

It is not democracy which “demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values”. That is the original religious teachings whcih were always universal and it is the minds of self-seeking men and women which have degraded that just as they degrade their other freedoms until democracy can no longer exist and their administratuions are so utterly corrupted and usurped. One must view carefully what Barack Obama says because he is cleverly manipulating people with the widest possible story into the most cunningly contrived trap.

BO’s statement that “...we do not hear what Abraham hears, do not see what Abraham sees, true as those experiences may be. So the best we can do is act in accordance with those things that we all see, and that we all hear, be it common laws or basic reason...” simply means that his intention is to discredit other peoples’ intuition and inspiration just as he has discredited the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the mount. Thus it will not be that “God has spoken” but that Barack Obama has and then followers are expected to live up to this demi-god’s edicts, regardless of the consequences.

But it is somehow OK that “religious leadership need not accept such wisdom in counseling their flocks, but they should recognize this wisdom in their politics” . That is starting to sound like China’s bloodthirsty first emperor from millenia past. And, of course, he “don’t want faith used to belittle or to divide” any of his pprecious statements as misleading and erroneous and deceptive as they are. Thus the typical self-righteous legalist twisting and turning to forever direct others to his own aggrandizement.

So I do hope that BO will have “felt a pang of shame” but it is obviously unlikely that he ever actually will. It is people like him who should be “looking for a deeper, fuller conversation about religion in this country” . They would thus change their positions if they were genuinely willing to listen and learn from those who are willing to speak in fair-minded words. Those who know of the central and awesome place that God holds in the lives of so many, and who “treat faith as simply another political issue with which to score points” are sadly, once again, set to mislead America.

Tony,

I understand your confusion in attempting to understand or otherwise rationalize the motivation behind Chalmers’ prolific bullshit.

I TOO, generally give people the benefit of the doubt, and specifically on these blogs, where we are pretty much forced to take people at face value, based solely on what they write themselves, or what they choose to share from some other source.

So, it’s only fair and reasonable to extend the benefit of the doubt, or to try to ask questions and/or clarify, -from the person themselves- what it is that they are actually saying, or what their positions actually are, and why.

BECAUSE...reasonable people CAN disagree, on interpretations of just about ANYTHING!! I mean, that’s simply the way the world and humankind operate in what is allegedly a democratic society.

However, there are in fact abnormalities that exist among the population as well, and they are often well hidden, or go unrecognized until one has actually followed the pattern for a while.

Chalmers is one of them, and again..he’s not alone. There are many posters on the board who will posit the same ideological stuff, such as Obama, (or anybody really) is ‘evil’ or ‘frightening’ or blah, blah, blah. And, they can NEVER point to WHY they believe that. It’s all very bizarre, but it is THEY who are abnormal, and have the ‘issues’, whatever they may be.

Chalmers has a BUNCH of them, and it would take a genuinely brilliant and experienced forensic psychiatrist some time to get through them all.

I am admittedly NOT qualified to do that, and I don’t believe that most of us on this forum are. I AM ‘qualified’ enough though, to know that he’s crazier than bat shit, which is why there’s little point in throwing good money after bad, (if I have that the right way around) in terms of spending any more time in responding to him, unless it serves as a warning for other posters.

This is proof that any asshole can put anything they want on the Internet...and somebody will be foolish enough (and usually biased enough--like DC) to buy into it without EVER checking it’s provenance or validity, even after it’s proven to be false.

Inherit…

This absolutely says IT ALL!! And, as often as I’ve tried, I simply could never say it better, or as succinctly.

On the positive side…while this Internet capacity does have this down side, (ANY vegetable head, tumor-ridden brain cell can post something on it) the up side is that we also have exposure to people of reason, among the same population, and THAT is a good thing.

Imagine for a moment, (because it’s actually a reality in many places on the globe) that you were locked up with the likes of a Chalmers, say even as a kid or a spouse, or an employee, etc, etc. And, you had no exposure to anything or anyone ‘normal’ or even simply any other mentality or way of thinking/seeing/interpreting the world around you? Well, YOU know the results…there is a huge likehood, that you would wind up with a mentality just as messed-up as his. This is, at least in part, how such insanity manages to recycle itself.

But, I STILL believe that these types are becoming the exception among us, as evidenced by the mostly reasonable and logical minds that prevail on these blogs, and even within the general population. I want to believe that these primary elections, and the whole process, imperfect though it may be, is evidence that people in general, are mostly operating within a generally agreed upon sense of what is best for the common good, which by nature of it, includes them. So, MORE people are able to view the ‘big picture’ as may have been possible prior to the introduction of the Internet.

Meantime, people like Chalmers, (and he’s not alone in this social-psychological pathology) can be more easily ‘spotted’ as a danger of which to be aware. It probably IS important to know that people like him ARE ‘out there’ so as to not be taken in or otherwise led astray by them. I pass this philosophy on to my students and other kids from time to time, even some adults.

If Obama gets elcted then Zybrinski will try to revive operation Barbarossa against the Russians. This will be done to revive the golden era of Poland, or more properly Poland-Lithuania during the rule of the Jagiello dynasty, originating in the 15th century. Problem is Russia has nukes. At least GW Bush was smart enough to attack countries without nukes.

If HRC gets elected we will see the formation of the greater Israeli co-prosperity sphere in the Middle-East. Also bad. But at least we won’t as likely get nuked.

Reality:
It’s going to be either Obama or Clinton against McCain.  I have no problem voting for either of them over McCain.

I know the consultants never think about what happens to the nation if their candidate loses, but we Americans must.  They wanted Romney because they thought he was easier to beat, as would be Huckabee.  But as bad as McCain might be, I have no doubt that Romney or Huck would be 10x worse.

Actually, if you LOOK at their policies, Obama is far more conservative than Clinton--even in their health care plans.  Obama is probably the better candidate--he appeals to the “I’m not right wing but I don’t like the Clintons type”, has great intelligence and charisma, and is, of course carrying the “first to..” banner.  Clinton is clearly far more experience, knowing who to appoint, knowing how things work, etc.  She’s also always been left of Bill.  Her BIG advantage is she has no more skeletons in her closet.  Her big disadvantage is many people have a visceral hatred of her and she’s a motivator--of opponents.

The reasons Chalmers gives don’t make any sense:  that Obama is “evil” because in the strong anti-Iraq war speech that he gave in October 2002 he said he “did not oppose all wars” - just stupid ones. It is even more absurd, if possible, when he calls Obama “anti-Christian” because he said in one speech that if we took the Sermon on the Mount literally, we would not even have an army or a defense department. How is this anti-Christian, for Christ’s sake? Mike Huckabee is the “Christian” candidate and he wants a big increase in the size of the military budget to pump up the Zionist-Crusader alliance against the Muslims. Now there’s a real Christian for you.

ITW,

Sure, any teenager or vegetable-brained dittohead can make a U-Tube video, cutting out some clips and stringing them together in whatever way they want. Did you see this other one where a guy claiming to be a limo driver says he snorted coke in a limo with Obama while Obama smoked crack and then gave him a blow job? The guy is wearing a big cap that shades his eyes and can’t spell. It was a one-day wonder on some web sites.  Looks like it was made by the same lowbrow production company. Or maybe Eric Cartman.

I don’t understand Chalmer’s motivation. For quite a while I thought we were on more or less the same wavelength, Kucinich progressives in agreement on most issues. but as soon as I said I supported Obama as the best candidate with a real chance to win, it became clear that he had vehement objections to Obama. At first I thought, well, he’s just one of those diehard Kucinich people who talk about “Republicrats” and there being no difference between one “establishment” candidate and another. I have been trying to convince these good people that they are dooming themselves to perpetual political frustration this way and they will have a “place at the table” if they support Obama, because I believe this represents our best hope as progressives.

At this point Chalmers seems to be supporting Clinton against Obama, since it is no longer possible to support Kucinich, who is struggling to keep his congressional seat at this point. I say Obama looks more progressive, is supported largely by small donations from the Net, and does not have the longstanding ties to big corporations that Clinton has, which progressives like I thought Chalmers was have been railing against for years. Clinton represents the establishment of the Democratic Party, the DLC, the party machinery. Obama is anti-establishment. He is an insurgent. He represents what Howard Dean calls “the Democratic wing of the Democratic party”.

If Chalmers does not accept these arguments and prefers Clinton, that’s fine with me. But the reasons he gives, that Obama is “evil” because he

Dumping money like a drunk sailor, in bush’s case it would be more like a Vietnam evader into the Military complex, we are prepared for any major catastrophe unless it happens in our county, then we are screwed like the Katrina folks.

George W. Bush is going to have another rude awakening, maybe in about ten years from now, when he thinks his legacy will show the world what a wonderful, insightful person he thinks he is and that everything he did improved the lives of people everywhere. Guess what Georgie, you must have been snorting that coke again and washed it down with some Johnny Walker Red. You have been the worst thing that has ever happened not only to America, but to the world that had ever walked the earth. More people have been murdered for your lies, more people have suffered and will continue to suffer because of your actions and lack of actions in many situations. No, I don’t think you will be remembered in the way you think you will, as a person of vision, hope and prosperity. In reality, you will go down as the worst terrorist mankind has ever known, next to Hitler, and you would have make him jealous of you if he were alive today. And you have only yourself to thank for that. The damage you have wrought will take centuries to correct, if then. Your legacy is a legacy of lies, deceit, corruption, dishonesty, torture, indifference, greed, just to name a few of the things you are known for. Honesty is a stranger to you and has been and is still missing in your whole 7+ years of disservice to America and the world.

While I can understand the source of pessimism, Expat, I think to let it become the ruler of one’s life is much too debilitating.  I happen to love life and want to realize the promises the energy I have gives me.  No one promised me that life would be happy, a bed of roses, or that others or a coherent world itself would always be there for me.  My experience is that most of I have loved have died, except for my children, and that I have to rebuild a continued happy existence with whatever I have.  That is my self-mission.  The fact that the environment in which I live is messed up by self-serving assholes is just one of those aggravations that life has brought my way.  Overcoming such adversity is one of those tasks in my life purpose which is on a different track than those who would steal it away, because I choose to be diferent.  Resistance is the call of the day:  To resist the seduction of contemptuousness.  To resist the authoritarians.  To resist the naysayers, and to resist pretentious egotism.  That does not mean I do not have an ego, for that is the life force that keeps an organism like myself going.  And I am aware of it.

What is more dubious than psychiatry is all-consuming suspicion.  I used the image as an emblem of the need, or rather to use your own idea, pragmatic use, for clear thinking.  It is time to clear the throat, and mind, and speak louder and conspicuously.  It is also time to act.  The kind of ‘acceptance’ that seems to have been missed in my use of that word is that recognition of reality, acceptance for what it is, is the only way to move forward since any other posture is delusional and one might just keep stepping in shit.  I try to avoid that, hopefully, at all cost.  Expat, as long as there is breath, there is never a point when it is too late.  We have always compromised ever since our exit from the womb.  We have lots of practice at it.  We just forget that we do from the enigmatic seductions life has presented.  To find any happiness at all, one learns to understand that all of life is a compromise.  It is the natural condition of existence.

Yes, we do need mass demonstrations since the war is still going on and there is a hushhush in the media about the real issues that are affecting every American, religious or not (and the fact is, believe it or not, most of them aren’t, they jes be hypocrites). It won’t matter whether Clinton or Obama is elected. One of them will be elected there is no doubt in my mind.  Whoever that might be, they are indubitably going to be between the proverbial rock and hard place because the blatantly hideous Republican regime has divided America into a them and us partition with their wretched economic policies, their despicable war policies, their beggarly education policies, their trivial infrastructure, their vile environmental policies, and their shabby world policies and have left the mess for the next president to spend the bulk of their time cleaning up the shit.  How anybody who belongs to a body politic, a commonwealth such as is our country, a people who work their asses off to have a decent life, could vote for anyone other than a Democrat ought to have their head examined.

Our priorities are so far out of whack that it boggles the mind.  But this is the way of all great powers, right before they cease to be great powers.

What is absurd about this is that, even assuming the prophecies are true, what makes these people think that anything a HUMAN BEING does is going to change GOD’S “timeable?” Don’t they realize that “if God is God,” then He can thwart attempts to hasten His schedule?

“You cannot spend well over $700 billion on “national security,” running what the White House predicts will be more than $400 billion in annual deficits for the next two years, and yet find the money to improve the quality of life on the home front.”

How true, Mr. Scheer. How ridiculous that exceedingly absurd amounts of money is spent on the war, leaving the home front worse off for it. Some say that if you cut funding, then you cut support to the troops. What about the flip side? Who knew that if you increase spending for the troops, that imperative funding for their children and every needy child in this nation will be cut?

Example: Reading is Fundamental. As one of the nation’s largest literacy programs, RIF strives to distribute books for kids that need them. They distribute over 16 million books a year. But with the new plan for FY09, RIF will be rendered nearly useless with proposed budget cuts. How can a non-profit that fights against illiteracy and poverty be cut in favor of increased Iraq war spending?

No doubt you’ve hit it on the head DougB. Thing is though...our economy has already collapsed, because they didn’t get enough of it in time. I mean yeah, the price of a barrel of oil has gone from $20 to $100 in 6 years, but that hasn’t saved OUR ‘economy’ only Exxon’s. (and their buddies of course).

So, while it’s true that the ‘war on terror’ will go on until the last drop has been stolen, (unless a new administration calls a halt, and that would take a while, for the same reason that one cannot stop a train on a dime) it’s never been ‘our’ economy that’s been propped up by the theft. Only ‘their’ economy, as evidenced by Exxon’s most recent posted profits. Each quarter, for the past 28 of them, their profits are larger than the quarter before. They are always RECORD profits. Not OUR profits..THEIR profits.

For all intents and purposes, ‘our’ economy has already ‘collapsed’.

To my way of thinking voting got us into this mess, so it is not going to get us out. We are presented with very seriously flawed characters. I would not want any one of them to babysit my neighbor’s children. I have gone on for donkey days detailing each candidate’s connection to some elite group of scumbags. Yep, I voted for Ron Paul. So they have a sand box for me. Allow me that foolish indulgence.

The best way to defeat the system is not to use the system. If you pay income taxes, don’t. If you use federal reserve notes, stop. There are barter systems to use. Don’t use their drugs, or their schools.

One of the most hated peoples to the system are aboriginals.  Indians had no use for silver or gold; they used barter. They had their own medicines. They had their own ways to live off the land. Many of them were migratory tribes. How do you tax a people on their land, if they are free roaming? So the Indians had to be killed.

I remember a story of how the English did not even want to waste their best men on “the likes of them”. They did not even want to risk the lives of soldiers to kill them off. So the commander of English Canada hatched a plot to give the Indian emissaries beautiful, silver boxes with the scrapings of small pox remenants. The emissaries were instructed that the boxes had healing medicine in them to heal their peoples with. But the boxes could not be opened until they were among their kind. As you can imagine the frontiers of Canada were well cleared of the natives.

The size of the military budget isn’t nearly as important as the allocation of those assets. If the money is spent to modernize the army, that’s fine, as long as the Army is kept here in the US for deployment only in an actual emergency. If money is spent to close most of our overseas bases, as demanded by Congressman Paul, tens of billions in savings would return to our shores. If the money is spent to reconstitute our destroyed National Guard, with the goal of restoring their proper function here in domestic times of emergency, great.  Etc.

Lawyer or not, you covered it quite well here ex-pat. The reason is multiple. (I could break it down if you want..but you’ve already come close enough for government work on that).

For this regime, the very top crimes, (the ultimate taboo) is the torture and the preemptive strike on a sovereign nation state without UN approval.

Article of the UN Charter forbids the use of force except in the case of self-defense, so that would pretty much ALWAYS rule out preemptive strikes, although there are exceptions, since no nation can or would be expected to wait until they’ve actually been attacked, in order to act in self-defense.

SO...THAT’S why there is the UN Security Council. They can and do assess the possibilities of these possible needs for one country to defend itself against a probable or possible attack by another, and then they can approve a resolution for pre-emptive action, of which there are many types that can be effective, PRIOR to just bombing the hell out of another nation. (sanctions, etc)

HOWEVER...as most of us have come to learn, (I hope) the UN would NOT approve a resolution to attack Iraq in a preemptive strike despite the fact that 9/11 had been created exactly for this purpose...to give George the excuse to attack anybody on the globe in the name of ‘the war on terror’. So, they did it anyway, minus the required resolution. That alone made it an illegal attack, in violation of International Law.

And, the use of force for the purpose of self-defense OBVIOUSLY doesn’t allow the OCCUPATION of another sovereign state, and the theft of its property/land/natural resources. So, even if there had been a legitimate, (rather than a cooked up/created/false pretense) reason to ‘defend ourselves’ from any enemy, it damn sure didn’t mean ‘defending ourselves’ by permanent occupation of their territory. So, more war crimes.

There is also a long list of duties of occupation. (Like, in those instances where a country has been legally occupied for the purposes of intervention, and permitted by resolution from the UN). In that case as well, the occupiers (Dick Bush and Cable) have also violated multiple laws, failing to provide security for the civilian population, and failing to provide for their basic needs. Matter of fact, prior to Saddam’s deposition, the civilians of that nation did get to eat, and go to school and to work, and they had housing, electricity, sewage, etc, etc…ya know. the standard stuff that human most human societies pretty much depend on. So, there’s a whole bunch more laws that have been violated.

Anyway, you can add to the list Crimes Against the Peace and Crimes Against Humanity, but you’re right that they do overlap. The list is so long now, that I’ve lost track.

Oh, they also fall into the Kleptocrat category of war criminals, for the theft of OUR monies and natural resources, as well as those of Iraq and Afghanistan. One of Africa’s many dictators is at the top of the Kleptocrat list, (I can’t think of his name right now). Or..he was until Dick Bush came along.

I’m pretty sure this is the worst regime since Hitler, and they’ve actually done far more killing, since the bush team is definitely a transnational terrorist organization. Makes those other so-called terrorists look like a group of rowdy delinquents, but not much more.

Now I’m sure we’ve gained some security over the decades by this effort but, please, we need to re-examine our priorities and our sense of proportion in our responses to the challenges we face.  Our entire culture in the 21st century cannot be defined by the threat of terrorism, real or imagined.

Here’s another “legacy” of Bush II, one that his administration will continue to push until the very last day of their tenure: the climate of fear associated with the never-ending “war on terror.”

The link below is to an article that appeared in the NYT on 2/6/08. The Bushies are once again attempting to frighten everyone via the all-purpose bogeymen (OBL, Al Qaeda) and their “ability to strike in the U.S.”

An excerpt: “Al Qaeda is gaining in strength from its refuge in Pakistan and is steadily improving its ability to recruit, train and position operatives capable of carrying out attacks inside the United States, the director of national intelligence told a Senate panel on Tuesday. The director, Mike McConnell, told lawmakers that Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, remained in control of the terrorist group and had promoted a new generation of lieutenants. He said Al Qaeda was also improving what he called “the last key aspect of its ability to attack the U.S.” — producing militants, including new Western recruits, capable of blending into American society and attacking domestic targets.”
