The End of the Road for George W. Bush

President Bush, center, listens to Franciscan priests as they overlook the Sea of Galilee in the ancient village of Capernaum, Israel.

By Chris Hedges

The Gilbert and Sullivan charade of statesmanship played out by George W. Bush and his enabler, Condoleezza Rice, as they wander the Middle East is a fitting end to seven years of misrule.  Despots stripped of power are transformed from monsters into buffoons.  And this is the metamorphosis that is eating away at the Bush presidency.

Bush stood in Jerusalem, uncomfortable and palpably bored.  He mouthed platitudes about a peace settlement that mocked the humanitarian crisis he aided and abetted in Gaza, the rapacious land grab by Israel in the West Bank and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The diminished George Bush, increasingly irrelevant at home and abroad, is fading into insignificance.  A year from now one half expects to see him stand up at the next president’s inauguration and screech “I’m melting!  I’m melting!” as he sinks into a puddle of slime.  He will return, I expect, to his ranch, where he will be able to spend the rest of his life doing the only task for which he has shown any aptitude—cutting down brush with a chain saw.

He may yet rise again to torment us with an attack on Iran, condemning more innocents to slaughter.  He and his cigar-smoking soul mate Ehud Olmert would like to go out with one more flash of mayhem and violence.  But even this will not ultimately save him.  Bush will soon be reduced to the cipher he once was, left to spend the rest of his life trying to salvage a legacy of shame and deceit.  In a just world he would be put on trial, if not by the International Criminal Court of Justice then by the U.S. Congress.  He would be forced to face up to his lies and wars of aggression.  But the moral rot that infects the nation has seeped into the bowels of the legislative as well as the executive branch.

World leaders, including those whom Bush desperately wants to intimidate, now dismiss him.  Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said a few days ago that relations with the United States are of “no benefit to the Iranian nation.  The day such relations are of benefit, I will be the first one to approve of that.”

Bush will have flown from Israel to Palestine to Kuwait to Bahrain to the United Arab Emirates to Saudi Arabia to Egypt in search of a legacy, one that he hopes will lift up his name in history.  But, isolated and deluded, he has yet to grasp that he and the United States are reviled and detested for our violence, arrogance and greed.  The bands played on the tarmac.  He was toasted at state dinners.  But even our allies, including Kuwait and Egypt, know Bush is a danger to himself and others.

He publicly displayed his inability to connect rhetoric with reality.  He promised peace and cooperation, a new era, a Palestinian homeland.  He promised solutions that will arise from negotiations that do not exist.  Negotiations, in his eyes, are always about to begin.  They were about to begin a year ago.  They were about to begin with Annapolis.  They are about to begin now.  The messy issues between the Israelis and Palestinians that he and his administration have never attempted to address—the borders, the expanding Jewish settlements and outposts, the plight of Palestinian refugees and Jerusalem—will all be seamlessly solved ... one day.  But the brutal reality of the Israeli occupation barrels forward.  The Jewish settlements and outposts continue to be expanded.  The crisis in Gaza, with the cuts in fuel and electricity, the deadly army incursions and airstrikes, has turned the world’s largest walled prison into a swamp of human misery.  And huge new settlements, like Har Homa, continue to rise up on Palestinian soil.

When Bush met with the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah he blithely defended the patchwork of Israeli roadblocks that have turned the West Bank into a series of ringed Palestinian ghettos.  The roadblocks, he told Abbas, are necessary for Israeli security.  He announced that the 1949 Green Line, the borders established by the United Nations, would never be restored.  There would be no discussion, he said, of the status of Jerusalem.  And the plight of Palestinian refugees would be solved by setting up an international fund, meaning, of course, that none would ever return.  In short, he offered an unequivocal endorsement of right-wing Israeli policy with not a murmur of dissent.  And the Palestinians can either have it rammed down their throat or rot.  Bush will be back, he has promised, in May to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Jewish state.  Olmert, no doubt, will again be fulsome in his praise, which is probably what Bush’s trip to the Middle East is, at its core, really about.  Bush desperately wants someone to pretend with him that he is an agent for peace and statesmanship.  Olmert, who knows the callow American leader will give him everything he desires, is happy to oblige.

But as Bush basks in the glow of his own fantasy, the suffering in Gaza, one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, along with the savage occupation of Iraq, continues to fuel widespread anger and rage.  Bush has spent his time in office bolstering the Middle East’s most despotic regimes, including that of Gen. Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.  He approved a $20-billion arms package for these states.  He has backed efforts to crush mainstream Islamic groups that have electoral legitimacy and popular support.  He has stood by as these regimes have stifled democratic dissent, and he has, with Israeli encouragement, isolated governments, even friendly governments, in the Middle East that raised feeble protests.  But his day is past.  There is open revolt.  Opinion polls show that two-thirds of Palestinians, and three-fourths of Israelis, do not believe Bush can affect events in the Palestinian territories.

The agenda of the Bush White House is exposed as irrelevant, myopic and counterproductive.  Most Arab countries are in open defiance of Washington and are actively reaching out to Iran.

“As long as they [Iran] have no nuclear program ... why should we isolate Iran? Why punish Iran now?” Arab League Secretary-General Abu Moussa told The Washington Post.

The chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, is in Iran for talks.  President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended December’s Gulf Cooperation Council summit.  The Iranian president attended the just-completed hajj in Mecca at the invitation of the Saudi monarch, King Abdullah.  Tehran is exploring the resumption of diplomatic ties with Egypt, cut since the 1979 revolution, and has offered to cooperate with Cairo in the production of nuclear energy.  And the Syrian and Lebanese governments have ignored Washington’s warnings to sever ties with Hezbollah and Hamas.

It is the end of the road for George Bush.  The world takes less and less notice of him.  He strutted and swaggered across the stage.  He bellowed and raged.  He plundered and murdered.  And now he wants to be anointed as a peacemaker.  His presidency, like his life, has been a tragic waste.  But he at least he has a life.  There are tens of thousands of mute graves in Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan that stand as stark testaments to his true legacy.  If he wants to redeem his time in office he should kneel before one and ask for forgiveness.

Chris Hedges, the former Middle East bureau chief for The New York Times and author most recently of “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America,” can be found every other Monday on Truthdig.

You can always go out on your own.  Sometimes people will follow.  A lot of people appreciate it.

I carry a sign that says:  Crooks Without Borders:  Israelis, Saudis, and Republicans stabbed us in the back with the 911 Stunt.

You don’t have to be able to prove yourself right to have something to say.

There are a lot lazy cowards around who accuse others of being lazy cowards.  So it goes.

Well CY I understand priorities and I also know that many people(including myself) weren’t happy about that pardon and realize that perhaps that may have played a role in Ford losing his bid. However, isn’t it just like a righty to attempt to take Ford off the hook? And beyond corporate stooges, brainwashed sheep and the wealth of the nation, who actually supports George W. Bush? Priorities are all wrong when people sit back and do nothing. If so, we are just as guilty of the mess we’re in as the feckless politicians. When civil rights, preemptive warfare, privacy and torture are at stake, people better begin to understand what their real priorities are before it’s too late! In fact, perhaps it already is.

I don’t hear any of the major candidates saying they will roll back the Patriot Act or presidential unitary authority do you? McCain may not condone torture but his original bill turned into a way to remove habeas corpus. He says he’ll close down Guantanamo but he wants a hundred years in Iraq and sings songs about bomb bomb bombing Iran with old Beach Boy tunes. Romney on the other hand wants several Guantanamo’s and is too embarrassed to even mention his own health care plan from Mass. God forbid if we get that! Hillary and Obama say they will stop the war but they say nothing about civil liberties or relinquishing power. Under these circumstances what do you think our priorities should be? Having other priorities?

OK then where was the nation after the pardon? Where were the massive protests? There were none, so regardless of your interpretations of my comments, my points about the nation pardoning Richard M. Nixon were essentially correct.

NOPE!!  You lefty’s are all the same… “No protests in the street” no burning raping and pillaging means no decent.

Ford lost the election in ‘76 to a little known peanut farmer from Georgia… That is where the “nation” was.  All the commentators of the time, all the pollsters found that the issue that cost Ford his own four years in the White House was the Nixon Pardon.

The same can be said today when we have lost our liberties and Bushco has broken every law in the book while he’s robbing us blind and most of the nation is content to sit back and allow him to get away with it. If every ordinary citizen had the chance I did when I lobbied congress over the Patriot Act and saw the corporate lobbyists laughing about the privatization of government while the Capital looked like Stalag 17, they’d be marching in the millions on Washington and Wall Street demanding all their heads! That is of course unless the game is on and there’s another six pack in the fridge!

Maybe the issues you mention above are not as important to others as they are to you? Maybe everyone doesn’t see Bush as the major problem? Perhaps some folks see that where we are is at the end of a long march that started so far back it includes far more people than the current players. I’m assuming you still believe in freedom of opinion? The people did protest and won a victory over Bush and the Democratic leadership when a grass-roots movement derailed the amnesty agenda.  Although I happen to be on the other side of the Driver’s license issue the people of New York derailed Spitzer’s plan to allow folks without a social security number to apply for a driver’s license.

I think it is nice you had the time and money to go to Washington and lobby government for change. but the “millions” you speak of may have other priorities.

The problems are many in America:
Corporate owned media which wants total control of all communications, insulates Bush in order to garner favor from the FCC. It lies, distorts facts and acts as a propaganda outlet for the whore House. Its attacks on Ron Paul make that much obvious.
The wealthy and powerful elite now control the government, making America a defacto facist state.
The neocons or whoever you wish to label them rely on fear and propagand to control the American people and convince them that giving away their Constitutional rights will make them safe.
Too many Americans live in a world of American Idol, NASCAR, and other useless TV fill are insulated from the reality of the rest of the world and indeed from the reality of their own country.
After listening to John Dean yesterday, it became apparent to me how this all happened. The fact that approximately 25% of Americans support the idea of an authoritarian government. There is much empirical data to support this.
The Christian right is delusional.
The zionist lobby wields far too much power in Washington.
In short,"you get the kind of government you deserve.” Marquis De Sade.
I doubt very much the Bushevics will receive any punishment for their crimes, as congress will have to punish themselves.
We will, in the end have to pick up the pieces ourselves, maybe through seccesion from the Washington government.
Good luck to all.

Chris Hedges is right about the legacy of shame GWBush leaves behind (if, indeed, he intends to leave office--I still wait for the other shoe to drop. The first shoe? the implosion of the WTC that allowed him to proclaim proudly “I am a war president.” With the second shoe he could proclaim “You need me because I’m the ‘bring them on’ president,” by which he probably means Armageddon. Wouldn’t he love to be the U.S. president when Jesus comes back. I’m willing to bet GW goes to sleep at night thinking about that.

(By the way, I don’t believe, no matter how destructive a MidEast war GW and his think-alikes can produce, that it has anything to do with divine will!!)

Bush will feel no shame. He believes in his lies, he believes he accomplished something worthwhile, he probably believes he has been anointed/appointed by God. He belongs to those who think total war is an honorable state of the world, who believes everyone hates you except those who pledge to fight with you, who believes that those who have the “smarts” to put a stranglehold on the world’s resources deserve them, and those who oppress the most people deserve to be in power.

Ah, well! No matter how good individual humans are, the human race has been a scourge on the planet for millennia. If any other animal species produced as much insanity and destruction as we do, we would have eradicated them long ago. Even if they could make music.

Hope is an imaginary contract with the future and even a good future is impossible to predict.  And, even worse, hope is the deluder that rainmakers and quakes use to sell their crazy inventions and cures.  (There is a sort of habitual and oganic form of hope that is more like a good irrational optimism, and there is nothing wrong with that.  Emily Dickinson expressed it in many of her poems)

You’re right of course.  Criminals are extremely vicious and dangerous and all you have to do is look at history to see their rap sheet.  On the other hand, despite all the overwhelming evidence, there is no SIGNED contract with the future that ensures its inevitable miserable outcome.  The proof is always in the pudding.  Lets’ hope humanity doesn’t eat the stuff that the Hale Bob cult ate. I don’t like Pelosi, but even a snake can be right sometimes.  Impeachment was meant to protect a crook, not get rid of one.  It was designed to be a fighting defense so that the impeachers could never get it done.  I favor just taxing the rich to death, which will mean a long hard almost impossible slog.  Partly because of crook media, most Americans are just stupid lazy cowards and they don’t even acknowledge that money is just another form of political power.  Agitation seems to me to me to be the way to go, combined with defending a simple punitive income and wealth tax, which can be used to cut the crook’s supply line.  Every bit of agitation is a little victory for progress, just like every dime spent at Walmart is a victory for crooks.

No one else seems to have the needed black hatred and physical courage, but I agitate every day with my car and sometimes holding signs along side the road.  My latest signs say, “Support our troops, put Bush in Jail”, Socialisms Shrink Big Crooks into Little Crooks”, “Vote Blind, There Has to Be a Pinata Somewhere” and “No Free Enterprise - Just the Same Marked Deck”.  I’ve been doing this ever since the Wellstones were murdered, and people look for me now.  If you use a variety of cynical messages, it is harder for the crooks to smear you.

No this is not mincing words.  In my part of the world, “The government” is made up of OUR employees.  They are NOT the Nation, nor are they “leaders” they are simply folks who we hire to run the business of government whilst we are otherwise occupied.

The “Nation” and “We the people” are the same “Government” and “elected officials” are the same,

IMHO your opinion of Government and the Nation as one is at the base of our current difficulty.

1)All IRS tax returns be made public records on the internet-in complete form.
2) All political voting be made public and in complete form--name of voter, time, place and
candidates selected-- fully on the internet,as the votes stream in.
3) All Media should be prosecuted under the RICO corruption Act-filed against ABC, MSNBC, FOX, CNN, CBS, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Miami Herald and The San Diego Herald-Tribune.
Quote “RICO suit filed against ABC, MSNBC, FOX, CNN, CBS, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Miami Herald and The San Diego Herald-Tribune

Quote from Clarence Malcolm -

“What the public needs to understand is that FOX, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC and the other established *mainstream “ mass media"/news sources [*see definition @ Wikipedia.org] are perpetrating criminal fraud (via omissions, distortions and outright lies) and a deliberate censorship of Dr. Ron Paul in 2008 Presidential race—with malice and aforethought and evil intent to control the 2008 presidential elections. This is an outrage and “We the People” need to organize against this dangerous plot and TAKE ACTION by filing “class action” criminal charges and civil suits against the owners and executives of these news sources. This illegal censorship is not only harming Americans because they wield the power to control the outcome of elections via the quantity and quality of the news coverage they provide the candidates; it constitutes an unAmerican and antiAmerican criminal enterprise; not to fail to mention a violation of the first amendment/freedom of the press. These accused individuals—the elitist media executives—exercise monopolized and Fascist-control over media/news sources with intent to get the candidate preferred by them elected while simultaneously wrongfully hiding and/or playing down the true facts, popularity and success of the Ron Paul campaign.

Please spread this message and let’s get criminal charges and a class action lawsuit executed against this dangerous organized crime syndicate identified as the present mainstream media outlets which are collaborating in a RICO [ Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1961-1968; reference: ]http://www.ricoact.com] conspiracy to censor Dr. Ron Paul and control the outcome of the 2008 Presidential Election. This is definitely “RICO” if it can be shown that any of the accused media executives have donated money to any of the other presidential candidates, directly or indirectly! The accused individuals herein have wrongfully utilized their outrageous MONOPOLY over the media across America to injure Dr. Ron Paul and his millions of supporters; all Americans, in fact. These accused individuals need to go to prison upon conviction. They need to be criminally prosecuted and have their personal assets seized. They need to have their Federal FCC licenses revoked for participating in this criminal conspiracy. Help us spread this felony information far and wide. Let’s get these elitist outlaws criminally prosecuted and civilly sued.”

The US Constitution provides 6 ways to impeach a president or other federal representative. A majority of the governors of the states can impeach and/or amend the constitution. We should amend the constitution to enable and require a direct population majority decision before any dollar is spent out of the US treasury. We could require all bureaus to justify their spending, we could put an end to the electoral college. We could put an end to bribery of elected officials. An amendment to the constitution could return the government to the people. That IS possible. We are all expecting our letters to congress to make a difference. When they won’t act, it is time to campaign the governors. Collectively, we can win our country back. The people could rewrite legislation so that salaries of elected officials are determined by majority, not by themselves. We can end executive priviledge, we can end corporate governance without responsibility. A majority rule voting system is already possible, it is a matter of implementation. The people can demand it through an amendment to the constitution. Then, one person cannot block the will of several hundred million.
Write your governor. And when the majority of your state begin to demand change, if your governor refuses, impeach your governor. A long, arduous, but Constitutional process.

Binge Economics...Well actually hetzer, that more describes Bush than it does Reagan, though Ronny boy got the ball rolling. Handing 12 dollars a week to average citizens for a year won’t save our economy or our dire straits any more than a band aid on a cancerous tumor would. Giving Americans livable wages would do more. Anyone who thinks a short term fix will get us out of this, is living in a dream world. Of course in this case, it seems both Reagan and Bush do have something in common, especially if he truly believes his economic package will work.

CY....  Excuse me?  Were you unborn, or asleep during this part of our history?.....

Well CY all you’re doing is mincing with words(nation/government) and yes I was very much alive and awake. Even felt like I was screwed which of course I/We were! I also note we didn’t get to vote on that decision, a decision that anyone who was awake knew was intentional. White washing Ford’s role as a junior idiot is just as inexcusable as the pardon itself and the results are plain to see.

It opened the doors to the greatest political lawlessness in our nation’s history. The chant back then was “it wouldn’t be good for our country to impeach a president.” “It would embarrass us” to the rest of the world. Lastly came, “he served his country” let’s feel sorry for him! And many mindless twits actually did!

Nixon’s ass should have been jailed, right along with the rest of his entire administration! If it had been, we would have gained the respect of the rest of the world, as well as a reassurance to our people that the system really works and that we really do have a government of we the people. What we’ve gotten instead is the exact opposite.

Also funny how it didn’t stop Gingrich and company from impeaching Clinton for the absurd. In fact just as Ford’s clemency, this too was a deliberate, orchestrated act which enabled the most lawless, corrupt and dangerous administration in our nation’s history. Moral majority my ass! Immoral minority is more like it!

Voting is vastly overrated.  It is necessary of course, but speaking up and agitating in public settings is vastly more important.  Voting is not a moral choice.  You are not responsible for the lousy menu. Of course it is always a choice between two evils.  Man is evil.  He is even more evil when he runs in political packs.

“What else can we expect from a nation that pardoned a president before he was even prosecuted?”

Excuse me?  Were you unborn, or asleep during this part of our history?

An unelected chief executive, exercised controversial pardoning power, which the Supreme Court (heavy with Nixon appointees) upheld.

The “Nation” denied Ford a term on his own merits, and exit polls indicated the people were voting their displeasure with this pardon.

Unfortunately, the “choice” (anyone but Ford) was an inexperienced Governor from Georgia who largely continued the Nixon/Ford doctrine of deregulation at home and doing business with despotic regimes abroad.

Which, is the reason I will NEVER vote for the “lesser of two evils” again!

Actually I read another story somewhere about the idolatry sales from the Vatican. I think it came from the NY Times. There is a chain of shops that sell statuettes for the Vatican for an arm and a leg. I think they were manufactured in China using what amounted to slave labor and then sold for like 3000% profit. The story was based on so called tax exemption for non-profits. That and why a charitable organization would extract slave labor to turn a dime.

...the Chinese are making is economically. Ironic isn’t it that where they excel we fail and at our own game too! Even more ironic are the vast sums in money we borrow from them to maintain our own train wreck of a government. Also they only spend about 30 billion a year on their military, while we spend 800 billion. They are having a housing boom while we are having a housing crisis. They are a lender nation and we a debtor state. These are the things we should be more worried about than China taking out our satellites.

Our biggest problems are the dilemma of empire IE the use of the military to steal and control the world’s natural resources. The cost in maintaining this folly is what has caused this economic crisis(and most of our other problems, including 9/11). Seems pretty stupid to me that we spend so much money, time and effort to control and dominate an entity that is in fact destroying the planet.

We don’t have to go in this direction. In fact we shouldn’t! We can say no, we do not wish to be an empire and spend our money wisely. This won’t make us any less safe. In fact, even more safe and the only people hurt by it would be the oil corporations and the defense contractors who serve them.

We must shift our priorities in a new direction. Particularly environmentally. If we did this we would fill any void left by the farcical defense and oil industries and supply far more jobs to the general population then they do. This would only benefit our society and the world in general.

It is a massive and dynamic undertaking, precisely what we need to give our economy a shot in the arm and its precisely the kind of undertaking that created this nation in the first place and made it great. Good old American know-how! But we’re not doing that because we are controlled by the oil and defense industries, the biggest threats to our economic, environmental and international wellbeing.

No small wonder Bush suppresses the environmental impact studies in global warming yet emphasizes how dangerous the world is and that we must crush enemies before they exist! So he does nothing since doing something would be moving away from oil (the major culprit) and with it, the necessity in maintaining a large military to control, protect and police it. Oil dictates the world economy but the reality is, it doesn’t have to and in fact it shouldn’t. It’s seen its day and that day is over and if it doesn’t end soon, it will be over for all of us, even the corporate CEO’s who deem all this bullshit as important.

As for Formosa, she will return to China without firing a shot. Their people already wish repatriation. The only thing stopping them is the puppet state we’ve established. This too shall pass. If China waited a hundred years for Hong Kong, they will do the same for Taiwan.

You’re welcome Maani. The main point is however that Reagan, knowingly or not opened the doors to the current debacle we’re in. Actually all the problems started with Santa Clara vs the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Rail road used the 14th amendment of all things to declare corporations as living persons, thus having the same rights as the individual. They fostered this notion as an act by the US Supreme Court, based on a hand written note on a court document by one of their attorney’s, a former railroad owner himself, that said, “corporations are living persons.” With the help of Randolf Hearst and other newspapers, this notion spread across the country. Front page news! Corporations are Persons! Once McKinley got in there, it took off and didn’t slow down until Teddy Roosevelt busted the trusts. The fact is the supreme court never ruled that corporations were living entities. In fact they settled on the judgment of the lower courts which in fact said they weren’t. This concept remained relatively stagnant until leading up to the Great Depression. Then it didn’t rear it’s ugly head till Reagan. Today this concept rules the nation and look where we’re heading! To another depression!

Well CY the fact is we are the most advanced militarily. Our problem in warring is not in crushing a sovereign state, which we did rather quickly in Iraq, although the fact remains, we have never fought a major power since WW2. So your statements may have validity. But forgetting the fact Bush mismanaged the war, I think the real problem lies in maintaining control once the sovereign is gone, then getting our victims to agree with our idea of a free market society, or in other words, complete American corporate hegemony.

Of course in the case of Vietnam we never got Ho. We also didn’t have the technology back then either. The terrain was of course another factor. It’s harder to hide in a desert then a jungle. But one indisputable thing we proved in both wars is that we can inflict millions of casualties on the “enemy” without suffering anywhere near those kinds of losses ourselves.

In the case of Iraq, we thought we could easily fill the vacuum once Saddam was gone. We were obviously mistaken. Also McCain is right when he mentions our military presence being forever in Germany and Japan and Korea. But he doesn’t convey the real reasons why. If he did, his idea of a forever presence in Iraq would be deemed absurd. And of course it is!

Beyond Korea, there really is no reason for an American military presence anymore. In fact there’s no reason for NATO. The Soviets are gone. “Let the Europeans pay for their own defenses,” as they say. The trouble is our defense industry makes so much money out of it, it has less to do with letting the Europeans pay for their own defenses as it has to do with the continued government financing that would disappear as a result.

As for China, they have the technology to shoot down our satellites and they an immense conventional army that dwarfs our own. This means the only way we could fight them and win would be via the use in nuclear weapons. Since they know they cannot defeat us in that arena, it is highly doubtful China would shoot down one of our satellites, unless it was spying over their territory. The recent and periodical showboating of the combined fleets in the sea of China is more than naval maneuvers or war games, it is a blatant show of force directed at China. Even if they one day acquire a nuclear arsenal comparable to our own, it will be the same as it was with the Soviets. Mutually assured destruction will guarantee the peace. The opposite is too horrific to imagine. More importantly it wouldn’t be profitable.

From Maani: “And let’s not forget that Reagan virtually bankrupted the country in his (admittedly successful) attempt to bankrupt Russia via the arms race.  He put us a trillion dollars in debt for the first time in U.S. history.

As an aside, that debt remained (i.e., was only minimally paid down) until...Bill Clinton paid it down in full, and left the country with a multi-billion dollar surplus for the first time in history (which Bush squandered in less than two years!).”

Well Maani that is not exactly correct. It is true we reached record deficits under Reagan leading to a trillion in debt, but the truth is and although his administration fostered debt faster than any time previously, the deficit was the result of thirty years in containment of the Soviets. The same reason Reagan should not get full credit for bringing down the Soviets. Also the countless wars we’ve been in and the consistent increase in military spending for wars and not. Today it’s that plus tax breaks to the rich, the same people who are making a killing in the defense industry. The fact we spend as much money as the rest of the world combined is the biggest culprit.

Also Clinton did not pay off the debt, he only paid off the interest on the loan, which meant we weren’t slipping further into debt. Of course today this current administration has no inkling in paying off anything, only borrowing more and more and placing us in a bigger and bigger hole. Most of that money goes to the rich. The result is we are paying taxes for essentially nothing and will be doing so for generations.

I am perfectly willing to discuss the above so long as you don’t try to sell me the other side of the partisan spin.

“Reagan” did nothing without financially without the Democratic House which he had all throughout his term.

“The Welfare Queen” wasn’t Reagan’s exclusively.  If you have ever lived in a lower-middle-class neighborhood it is well “known” that some folks live off the largess of others.  Personally I am opposed to Federal welfare programs,All of them, and when you speak of “Corporate welfare” Brother, you are preaching to the Choir!

Clinton “balanced” the budget through trickery and phantom cash. He also took from the poor and gave to corporate entities, There is no president since WW II (except perhaps LBJ) who has not.

Clinton and Reagan where lucky presidents who took over the reigns as economies were on an upswing. Carter and Bush were unlucky presidents who took over when the economy was on a down cycle.

ANYONE who has taken even a undergraduate course in Economics knows that presidents have very little to do with how the economy fares.  Reagan hit the oli pricing slump, and Clinton hit the twin tech and real estate booms.

Well CY starving and freezing is what’s happening. The number in homeless has doubled in my community in the past year. It may not be evident in Maine but it certainly is out here in California. I agree with your analogy of Bush and Clinton though. You’re also right that Reagan won sweeping victories, but the voter turnout was the lowest in US history. And how did he get in there? He asked America if we were better off today then we were 5 years ago. And of course that was in the middle of the oil embargo and the Iranian revolution. Then he did a good job in selling that welfare queen-Cadillac crap, blaming the poor(and unions) for all our woes and making even more poor as a result. He sold the idea that the poor were the real culprits, the so called welfare state, yet failed to mention the fact that corporate welfare was 100 times greater. Today it’s a thousand times greater.

And you’re right, we could fill volumes analyzing Reagan. The real question is are we better off today because of Reaganomics. The answer is, that beyond a GDP standpoint, no. In fact we’re far worse off. Now I don’t think that Reagan necessarily meant it to be that way, but that’s the way it turned out. You can never give the rich money and expect it to trickle down to the poor. Reagan began this socialist economy for wealth by taking away the so called nanny state to the poor and making it a nanny state for the rich. And if he were alive today, I doubt he’d recall that either.

China has proved (beyond any doubt) that it has the capability to destroy a satellite in space.  Our system depends on these satellites for communication, intelligence, and weapons siting.  It is the weak link in the chain, because with out typical huberous we believed that no un-friendlies had this capability. Well the machinery of Diebold is notoriously well known. So much so they changed their name to “Premier Election Solutions.” Indeed they do, along with other corporations, represent a threat to distorting election results, but they are not the only perversion. The lobby system is even worse and the election “fix” is multifaceted.

When the elect ability of leading candidates is based on how much money they can generate, along with the fact that candidates from both party’s receive campaign finance from the same lobbies, fixing the electoral process in the voting booth may actually fall second to the lobbies, since even is a fair election, the probability in getting a guy in there that favors them over us is very likely.

Because of this, the American people have literally been forced to accept these candidates and basically try to vote for who they believe to be the lesser of two evils. Really there is only one evil. Campaign finance.

Candidates who have a real plan that might benefit all of us and sensibly put us on the right track are shunned by the corporate lobbies who always throw their support to those they believe are the most approachable and will produce the results they want. Of course so do we, but the bottom line is the bottom line. We can’t give them the money the rich can. We send in our contributions ten to twenty dollars at a time. They send in their contributions in the hundreds of thousands and millions.

Another point, candidates and politicians in general spend more time talking to the lobbyists then they do to the average citizen. Their political livelihood depends upon it. So while they listen to these representatives of wealth practically every day, hearing their problems and how they think things should work, the rest of us are basically silenced in the discussion and by the time we become a part of it(at election time), our issues are rarely if ever addressed and when they are, we’re merely spoon fed what we want to hear, promised the sky, then ignored till the next election. Along the way we hear words like “freedom” and “democracy” thrown around. And today, anyone with a notion realizes neither exist.

Well hetzer if you’ll note, none of the leading candidates beyond Edwards is addressing the lobby system which is the real problem. Also concerning the war, although all the democrats say they will end it, all of them suggest there will always be a military presence of some kind. Even though Obama said he meant that presence as a way of protecting our embassy, what it really boils down to is we’ve killed a million Iraqi’s to supposedly get one guy (and to steal their oil), so as Kucinich says, we don’t deserve to have an embassy there, we should have an international coalition(UN) to fill the vacuum once we’re gone, we must pay them in retribution to rebuild for the destruction we’ve caused in this unnecessary and illegal war and give them control of their own oil. It will never happen, even though this would be helpful in restoring diplomatic faith in us, not only in Iraq and the Middle East, but in the rest of the world.

The military machine is too profitable, as is stealing a nation’s resources. Also who needs diplomacy when you have the strongest, most advanced military on the planet? Shotgun diplomacy is far more lucrative and another 9/11, as noted by Tommy Franks, will only further seal our fate.

As far as the rich go, I don’t see a need to get rid of them, only muzzle the tremendous power and influence they have unconstitutionally acquired. Since they finance the entire political system, this too will never happen, until the American people wise up and demand it to happen. By the looks of things, they never will. Their lack in understanding how the system really works, along with the distractions in their own personal concerns won’t allow it to. Perhaps after millions are starving on the streets they will finally wise up. Until then expect business as usual regardless of which handpicked puppet gets elected.

I think that after a few years of forced and grueling campaigning, it wouldn’t surprise me that some of the candidates, including Obama, have lost their mind.  Otherwise his comment about Reagan was sincere, ignorant, or shameless pandering.

Direct voting, liars courts, and eliminating the rich are my modest proposals for changing the system.  But, I have confidence that in a nation of crooks, crooks will eventually find a way.  I would like just a few years of freedom from the shameless filth that think they run this country.

Huge Diebold Disparities Uncovered In New Hampshire Recount

Memory cards missing as attorney voices concerns about transparency

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
Friday, January 18, 2008

Huge disparities between votes cast on Diebold electronic voting machines and actual hand counted tallies are emerging during the New Hampshire recount, with Hillary Clinton gaining the most from over a hundred unaccounted for votes in one Manchester Ward.

The recount in Manchester’s Ward 5 revealed a disparity whereby establishment candidates received over a hundred ‘black hole’ votes between them that could not be tallied during the hand count.

Diebold Result Hand Count

CLINTON 683 619

EDWARDS 255 217
OBAMA 404 365

At the moment there is no indication of where these extra votes came from, but the figures again cast the accuracy of Diebold voting machines into severe doubt and provide further evidence of the need for a return to hand counted paper ballots only in all federal elections.

“Well it was Reagan who destroyed social aid to the poor and replaced a system that had previously catered to the wellbeing of the middle classes, into a system in socialized economics, taking subsidies from the poor and giving it to the richest people in the country, while forcing the rest of us to abide in a market capital system that essentially makes us pay for the subsidies given to the rich. That is precisely why we face the tremendous economic problems we have today. Problems as great as the last Great Depression. Problems that I believe will define themselves as even worse. If Obama really plans on instituting change, doing what Reagan did won’t do it. In fact it makes me wonder if he even has an idea in what he’s talking about!”

Well, Mike, maybe, But Reagan pulled much of his support in two landslide elections from the same people you say he short-changed.
