Having vaulted into the front ranks of the Republican presidential contenders, Mike Huckabee is now more than an amiable curiosity—and his decade as governor of Arkansas will be scrutinized carefully for clues to his character and temperament. He has established an admirable persona as an evangelical conservative who displays none of the rancor that permeates the religious right. But when he says that his faith defines his life and that there can be no separation of religion from government, what does that mean in practice?

It isn’t clear how Huckabee’s Baptist outlook influenced his decisions on taxes, education or transportation, but his record in granting clemency and pardons demonstrates the dangers of religious zealotry in power.

The most infamous case of Huckabee’s misplaced mercy involves a rapist and murderer named Wayne Dumond, now deceased, who originally went to prison in Arkansas for raping a distant cousin of Bill Clinton’s. Eventually that case developed into an obsession among President Clinton’s enemies on the right, who spread the notion that Dumond had been imprisoned unjustly and brutalized by the “Clinton machine” and should be released.

When Huckabee became governor, he supported and evidently engineered a parole for Dumond, winning applause from the Republican right—and indirectly causing the death of a young woman whom the former prisoner later raped and killed in Missouri. Dumond died in prison, under suspicion that he had murdered at least one other woman after his release, and Huckabee has sought to shift the blame for that bad outcome onto others.

To rebut critics of the Dumond fiasco and prove he is tough on crime, Huckabee notes that he signed off on 16 executions as governor. But he also used his authority to grant clemency to others found guilty of equally heinous crimes. Indeed, he granted more commutations and pardons than any governor in the previous 40 years. While many of those decisions were surely wise and just, especially when they meant reducing excessive penalties under the drug laws, some of his pardons have raised considerable controversy in Arkansas.

Influenced by his fellow pastors, as well as by friends and relatives of inmates, Huckabee appears to have practiced what might be called “Christian cronyism.”

The worst example of that syndrome, chronicled in detail by the crusading journalists at Arkansas’ The Leader newspaper, concerned a killer named Glen Green, sentenced to prison for life after confessing to the savage rape and murder of a teenage girl. An Air Force sergeant, Green had bludgeoned the woman with nunchucks, violated her almost lifeless body, run over her with his car and dumped her in a bayou. A preacher friend of Huckabee’s convinced him that the girl’s murder had been an “accident” and that the convict had repented, come to Jesus and therefore should be freed.

Huckabee seems to have known very little about the horrifying case beyond what his preacher pal told him. He didn’t bother to seek the opinions of the prosecutor or the victim’s family, and he ignored the dissent of his own parole board. But after the governor announced that Green would be released, a furious public eventually forced him to reverse his decision. Still, he insisted on releasing a number of murderers and other violent criminals despite protests from prosecutors.

Aside from the manifest stupidity of releasing Green, Arkansas citizen groups and newspapers criticized the secrecy of Huckabee’s deliberations. He even refused to disclose his reasons for granting clemencies, supposedly because he didn’t want prisoners to figure out how to win his sympathy.

But as The Leader sardonically observed, “Huckabee may not have realized it, but every prisoner knew how to get on the governor’s good side. Call it Huckabee’s religion test. It’s a sure ticket to freedom: Tell him you’ve found religion.” Or get a friendly pastor to tell him.

Other prisoners likewise seemed to have a special claim on Huckabee’s attention, including those who labored as trusty servants at the governor’s mansion, relatives of Huckabee’s friends and employees and, in at least one case, a drunk driver who happened to be a wealthy real estate developer. (In 2003, he began serving a six-year sentence for repeated drunk driving offenses, but Huckabee let the man go after about six months. In 2006, he nearly killed a police officer in yet another drunk driving incident.)

Mercy is a wonderful quality, whether religious or secular. What seems far less wonderful is the dispensation of political favors disguised as religiosity—and that is exactly what the nation’s Founders meant to forbid.

The life and times of America has bowed to an infectious disease that has poisoned the minds of
its citizens where we can blur the line between the
teachings of the church where the Good Book is the only book and has the formula within to transform our nation
since it is believed to be absolutely true. The mind of
the zealots that have taken control of our government have a plan for us since what is said therein to be inerrant. However that may be so for them , haven’t we
learned by now that this kind of narrow minded thinking is just the opposite of what the Founders intended. Was there an Enlightenment not so long ago in our history and we have turned our backs on it?
What happened to Reason? We are unfortunately in for more of this lunacy! The United States of Amnesia has
taken its hold.

Purplewolf, I think your minister friend must have been speaking biblically metaphorically.  A person who lies cannot really enter into a church.  He can go in, but he can’t enter.  There’s a difference between entering and going in.  I’m not certain what it is, but your average man of the cloth would know and there’s where faith comes in.

Now, if you’re not a liar, then enter, then become a liar, then things take on a new color.  For example, many men of the cloth themselves entered not knowing or recognizing that they were, by definition, liars.  Then they were found out—or publicly acknowledged by non-liar cloth people—to be the liars they became…

Look, I can save time. Understanding religion takes a bit of creativity, patience and love.  Knowing a few ancient languages is helpful, too.  I’m writing a new book which I am calling, “Understanding Religion & Entering a Church, a creative guide for the 21st century.”  Should be out soon.  If you care to, why not pick up a copy?

Why don’t Governors use expert advice from prison psychologists and social workers etc. when making such decisions? If they did then a column like this one would have no subject.

And just what is mindless about it, Andrew?

It is Truthdig’s job to print what the MSM will not.  The MSM will not point out the absolute moronic idiocy of professing a belief in fairy tales as a good quality for elected office.

While I may not agree with everything I find on this site I am thankful I have a reputable place to refer to when beginning my research into various topics of current interest.  At no time has any article I’ve researched been wrong.  And they are not here, either.

Huckabee is just another piece of elected crap trying to use the jeebus myth to justify his incredible, filthy lust for theocratic control.

If you find the words too big or the ideas too profound, Andrew, there are many sites tailor made for you: The Drudge Report, CNN, Fox, etc., all sites designed to keep the stupid stupid, the ill-informed ill-informed, and the mouth-breathing morons who believe in fairy tales happy.  You should be right at home.

Having worked as a corrections officer in a medium security prison, the first thing inmates do in prison is find “JESUS” or ALLAH or whatever the current religious fad of the day happens to be. Why do you think they call then CONvicts? Right. How easily you religious fools are deceived. I’ve even had a minister say that a person who lies cannot enter into a church. A person I know who went to his church every Sunday was the biggest liar, drug addict, thief and on the run convict, but so much for not being able to enter a church if you are bad.

Releasing a violent depraved person like Glen Green just because he found Jesus, does not mean he is president material. In fact it proves he is not up the the job.Whenever a person starts to spout their religious whatever, you are in for a con job. There should be aptitude tests among other requirements to check a persons qualifications needed to fulfill the job of president. What you claim God says to you is not one of those qualifications. We have had enough of seeing what God has wanted destroyed in the world in the last seven years, it’s time to exorcise the White House and cleanse it of all negativity that has steeped into every inch of it.Keep Huckabee in the church,he can do less damage there, he has no place in the white house.

We need a logical, honest, level headed, fair and just person someone who is trustworthy for all people, not to a few suck-ups like we have now.

Thomas’s idea sounds fantastic. However, he should be more than satisfied to take a real vow of poverty and serve free of charge to do Gods bidding, we will offer him free room and board. His own private cell, like the nuns have, and he shall be well fed on the words of the lord as he will be given the same allotment of food money that the US government thinks a poor person can eat well on and remain healthy, about $30 dollars a month or less. After all God shall provide all he needs.

Bush found his born againism through jesus, and now he is trying to destroy the planet with a nuclear war by rebirthing the Inquisition…

A psychotic alkie neighbor, who murdered a hooker in one of the big city dive-hotels, set fire to the hotel room in an effort to cover up his crime, thus burning down the whole hotel, because “jesus told him to do it”... He got off with a couple years in an asylum, by telling the authorities that “jesus told him to do it”...
Then a couple years ago I refused to be his taxi, and he tried to kill me for it, claiming that “god told him to do it”...

Now Bush is destroying Arabia because god told him to do it…  If there happen nukes in the sand, the toxic dust will cycle around the whole planet, and fall in the rains on everything, killing the pollinator’s sleeping eggs, and we and the animals will all run out of food a couple years after that…  Bush is toying with the very existence of all Life on this planet, and no one on the planet has the balls to even try to stop him…  We is in big doodoo!..  That religion crazed monster is about to destroy planet earth…

We’ve got a huge problem with all that crazy rampant christinsanity in places of authority all around the world… It is stifling all life, especially human life to the very limit, and it is killing the planet faster than nature can restore and repair the damages, which means that one day this planet will just simply run out of life, because of all those nut-cases selling out all life for money…

Now days the absolute crazies can do what ever the hell they please to whom ever they please, and all they need do to get out of their deserving punishments for their crimes is say the word “jesus”, and suddenly psychotic, molesters and murders are great American heros… They say: “Haleylooya Brother… Praise God… Yay Lord… Jesus Saves… Glory Be… Aymen”...  Them God Dam bunch of mindless Apes!..

The big problem is that those bunch of GD mindless monkeys are running our whole world and lives…  They’ve got us born into slavery, and liking it..  never knowing anything else…  And religion maintains the average folk’s mind usage at a maximum peak of 7%...  And should a cristinsane religiously conditioned person try to process thought using 8% mind usage, suddenly they are experiencing a serious migraine…
Those gorilla goonies own our lives…  They permit us only enough resources to survive as strong slaves, but not enough to break-free of their insane synthetic reality, and their insane democratic slavery program…  We are born into slavery, and we die in slavery, never knowing that there is more to life than living in this hell on earth which democracy holds us imprisoned within…

Thomas, I love it!!! Prime Minister it is. You don’t even have to figure out any more duties for him. Just let him talk to God and keep Oprah company. That’ll be plenty. (maybe you should have him take notes, just so he’s got something to show for his paycheck) Wait…better yet, he can turn the notes in to Oprah, and SHE can pay him!!

Now that we’ve got THAT figured out…

JOE!!

“….But when he says that his faith defines his life and that there can be no separation of religion from government, what does that mean in practice?..”

What the hell do you THINK it means – in practice!? It means a flippin’ theocracy!!! It means I’ll end up doing time for choking the Jehovah Witness the next time she bangs on my door at 9:00am on a Saturday morning. It means Huckabee should run for president of Saudi Arabia or some other similar place.

NOT HERE!!

Oh yeah, somebody should tell him and his group to stop passing counterfeit airline tickets, and then sayin’ “Jesus blesses you”, because that doesn’t pay the fuel bills.

Jesus, Oprah, and Mickey Mouse, and throw in Moroni and Joseph Smith if you like, and you have what has screwed up the world for all of recorded history. It’s based on the principle that if you tell lies often enough eventually people come to accept them as some kind of truth, and the trouble begins.

The funny thing is that poor moronic Bush expects a pass for his misbehavior but won’t give any to his enemies, only to those who lied for him. Not that he decides whom to pardon, but that when religion of ANY stripe rears its ugly head, the shit hits the fan.

“Buying into” the Mormon religion is no worse than buying into any other: you brand yourself as naive, credulous, and either crafty or stupid depending on whether you are a leader or a follower. Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you isn’t bad per se, but setting up church authority to define good and bad cannot be anything but bad in the long run.

When anyone professes religious belief I immediately think of one word: “charlatan.” Even if the person actually has convinced himself of the truth of his tenets, he is still a fraud and a faker because he professes to know what is unknowable and possibly untrue.

Huckabee=huckster.

Religion and “finding Jesus” as a reason to release violent criminals from prison makes as much sense as religion and “finding Jesus” as a reason to vote for a presidential candidate.

But that “Christianity and Christmas is important” thing was passed in the house yesterday, by an overwhelming majority, with hardly anyone asking if it was appropriate to bring up at all.

Reminds me of that bumper sticker:

I FOUND JESUS.
He was behind the couch all the time.

This sounds alot like our present white house occupant. Never mind even what the majority may want God told me to do it.

History repeatedly shows that divines can not be trusted in positions of complete authority anymore than obnoxious politicians. Over and over again the public has been abused by these rigid little freaks, frequently tormenting those who in truth had done nothing worse than they themselves have done.

If you don’t know this than you not only have paid no attention to history, you haven’t even listened to the news. We have a Bill of Rights for a reason, but it must be respected and enforced or it is no good. We don’t need another President with funamentalist beliefs that he can swear to uphold the Constitution and Bill of Rights and then ignore the limits placed on their bad behavior by these laws. Thousands have died in the past 7 years because of this religiously driven certitude.

The sad thing is that this column will improve his image among the religious right. What better criterion to decide if a guy is rehabiliated then if he has found Jesus. For all these Jesus people running for President let us create a new post they can run for how about “Prime Minister”.Make whoever wins the No 1 minister to the nation.Everybody else who sees the Constitution as the last word on running the country can run for President. The minister can talk to God and of course get answers.Every Sunday at 5 am he can tell who ever gives a damn what God said and what he thinks we should do.I have not fleshed out all the duties of the Prime Minister but you get the idea let us get these morons like Huckabee off to the side so the rest of us can get our country back.
