The Dubious Mr. DobbsPosted on Dec 4, 2007By Amy Goodman Truth matters. History and context count. “You’re entitled to your own opinions. You’re not entitled to your own facts,” the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously observed. CNN’s Lou Dobbs has migrated to a pre-eminent position in the debate on immigration in the U.S. Since he identifies himself as a journalist, he has a special responsibility to rely on facts and to correct misstatements of fact. CNN, which purports to be a news organization, touting itself as the “Most Trusted Name in News,” has an equally strong obligation to its audience to tell the truth. Dobbs was best known for anchoring CNN’s “Moneyline,” an early and influential program that helped create the televised financial-news genre. On “Moneyline,” Dobbs featured corporate CEOs and generally lauded them. About five years ago, Dobbs began changing his line, invoking populist rhetoric and championing the cause of the middle class. He thematically titled his coverage “War on the Middle Class” and “Broken Borders.” Dobbs’ signature issue of undocumented immigrants, or, as he calls them, illegal aliens, has tremendous influence on the debate nationally. So it matters if he is wrong. On March 28, 2006, Dobbs said on his show, “And it’s costing us, no one knows precisely how much, to incarcerate what is about a third of our prison population who are illegal aliens.” As it turns out, the number of noncitizens incarcerated in the U.S. federal and state prisons is closer to 6 percent, not 33 percent. Note that the 6 percent includes legal immigrants as well. On April 14, 2005, Lou Dobbs opened his show by saying: “The invasion of illegal aliens is threatening the health of many Americans. Highly contagious diseases are now crossing our borders decades after those diseases had been eradicated in this country.” CNN correspondent Christine Romans filed a report, then told Dobbs, “There have been 7,000 [cases of leprosy] in the past three years.” CBS’ “60 Minutes” later challenged the fact, pointing out that there had actually been 7,029 cases reported over 30 years. When Lesley Stahl confronted Dobbs on the statistic, he defended it, saying: “Well, I can tell you this. If we reported it, it’s a fact.” Dobbs’ reporter, Romans, said her source was “Dr. Madeleine Cosman, a respected medical lawyer and medical historian.” Cosman, who died in March 2006, was a medical lawyer and staunch anti-immigrant activist. She was recorded saying publicly of Mexican men: “Recognize that most of these bastards molest girls under age 12, some as young as age 5, others aged 3, although, of course, some specialize in boys, some specialize in nuns, some are exceedingly versatile and rape little girls aged 11 and women up to age 79.” Advertisement On May 23, 2006, Dobbs aired a report on a state visit by Mexican President Vicente Fox. His correspondent, Casey Wian, called it a “Mexican military incursion” and displayed a map of the U.S. with the seven Southwest states highlighted as “Aztlan,” which, Wian reported, “some militant Latino activists ... claim rightfully belongs to Mexico.” The graphic came from the Council of Conservative Citizens, which the Southern Poverty Law Center, a group that tracks hate groups, points out is the current incarnation of the old White Citizen Councils of the 1950s and 1960s, which Thurgood Marshall referred to as “the uptown Klan.” The SPLC has reported that several of Dobbs’ guests and sources have had links to the CCC, such as Joe McCutchen of Protect Arkansas Now, part of the Minuteman vigilante movement, and Barbara Coe of the California Coalition for Immigration Reform. Another guest, Glenn Spencer, head of the anti-immigrant group American Patrol, speaks on the white-supremacist circuit. When CNN’s Wolf Blitzer had Spencer on, he told his audience that the SPLC had designated American Patrol as a hate group. When Dobbs had him on, he never identified the connection. In our conversation with Dobbs, “Democracy Now!” co-host Juan Gonzalez raised the issue of history, of how immigrants have been scapegoated: the Irish in the 1860s, the Chinese in the 1880s and, later, Southern Europeans. Dobbs rolled his eyes, saying, “Are you holding me responsible?” No, and Dobbs knows better. But he must be held responsible for not bringing a historical context to this crucial discussion of immigration reform. The immigration issue will not be solved by vilifying a population. The SPLC has just released a report on the upsurge in anti-immigrant, anti-Latino violence in the U.S. United Stations Radio Networks has just announced that Dobbs will soon be hosting a three-hour daily talk radio show. The Web site claims, “It’s not about what’s right and left ... it’s about what’s right and wrong.” Let’s hope that Lou Dobbs follows his own advice. Amy Goodman is the host of “Democracy Now!,” a daily international TV/radio news hour airing on 500 stations in North America. © 2007 Amy Goodman Distributed by King Features Syndicate Previous item: Iowa Will Make or Break Edwards Next item: It Turns Out Ahmadinejad Was the Truthful One New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. I have wished that Lou Dobbs would correct his factual mistakes. With that said, I am glad he is on board to close down the open borders and the illegal alien employers. I wonder when Amy is going to do more coverage of illegal alien employers.

The Dubious Ms. Goodman
Report thisAmy Goodman, reports: When CNNs Wolf Blitzer had Spencer on, he told his audience that the SPLC had designated American Patrol as a hate group. When Dobbs had him on, he never identified the connection. Thats interesting, Spencer said, since I have not appeared on either show.
Spencer says CNN may have used video clips from American Border Patrols field activity, but he has not been a guest of either Blitzer or Dobbs. I love it when they get so desperate that they have to resort to wholesale lies, especially the SPLC nonsense, to keep me and the truth from the people, he added.

Jaki, The ones that are off-base are yourself, Amy and Juan. I’m old enough to have been paying attention during election 2000, are you? I stand by my statements, Goodman rationalized Nader’s demand that a Bush presidency be imposed on the most powerless, to cause untold suffering to force them into the “movement”. It was her much loved “scorched Earth” theory. I suggest you educate yourself rather than parroting mindless drivel as seems to be your prediliction. As such Goodman and those like her have the same blood of innocent Iraqis and Americans on their hands, that Bush and those who voted for him do. Like them, she is hiding behind denial. She attacked Al Gore as being no different than Bush, she has no shame, nor has she apologized for her lies and propaganda against him. She knows that Nader has profited from dirty corporate investments, back then and now he makes millions of dollars in profits from the raping of the Niger Delta, child labor in Chinese sweat shops, the military industrial complex, big oil (and it was Nader who owned half a million in investments in Occidental Oil, not Al Gore, the way she accused back then)
We knew Bush would push us into war, Goodman did as well, but had a million excuses at the time for how it wouldn’t be allowed to happen. Since that time she’s sought to profit from the war and other crimes Bush has been behind for her own ideological agenda.
I used to be a fan of Goodman’s, up until she showed her true colors in 2000, and I did watch the online video of the interview. You rabidly infer that Amy and Juan could barely get a word in edgewise.. I have to ask, did you watch the interview? He did attempt to answer the accusations, and saw how flustered Goodman became because she realized how cheap her shots were starting to appear. Like every other blind ideologue though, she has no shame and kept hiding behind a few claims rather than actually address the wider truths. American citizens are suffering from poverty based on the corporate exploitation of illegal aliens, lobbying, with the help of Goodman, the ACLU, and others on the payroll, like La Raza, MALDEF, LULAC (who receive millions of dollars from the US Chamber of Commerce and Business Roundtable) and foreign governments, and the outsourcing of jobs, and importation of foreign visa workers. Goodman knows what is going on and turns a blind eye to it. Apparently she refuses to criticize the corporate elite when it suits her.
Yes, fascistic bullies.. do you know what fascism is? Goodman is attempting to vilefy one of the few members of the media who are reporting the truth, taking on the corporate elite for their attempt to oppress American workers, and exploit illegal alien labor, ensuring that the status quo of the third world never changes, and is in fact imposed on the most powerless in America. Goodman attacked Dobbs on a few mis-statements, but never sought to discuss the wider issues he has reported on.. because she is interested in shutting him down altogether, because she wants such suffering and oppression to take hold.
When was the last time Goodman ever covered the realities of poverty and suffering faced by the America people? When has she challenged La Raza, MALDEF or LULAC for taking untold millions from the US Chamber of Commerce and Business Roundtable to help them undermine American wage standards and workplace protections? Never. When has she taken on the lies about jobs Americans won’t do? Never. Harvard University participated in a study that was released a week and a half back, that proved that worker shortages in America were a lie. Whether we’re talking about blue collar or white collar tech jobs, it’s all been a lie. Has Goodman covered that study? Never.

Part 2
Just whose “better quality of life” is Goodman and Gonzalez interested in? Not the poor, neither of America or Latin America.. that’s plain to see. Their “better quality of life” refers to the ability of parasitical elites like themselves to fatten themselves of an oppressd lower class slave-like class. She is no different than George W. Bush and those like him. The racist, the classist is Goodman, Gonzalez and those like him who spit in the faces of the most powerless every day, and attempt to help Bush sweep the realities beneath the carpet. Goodman is an example of why the left has been negated, because she is the reality that proves the negative stereotypes (that people like myself defended it against) are at the heart of things true.

I like Ammy Goodman, but I do think that she does need to understand that our Government is selling our Country out, and the jobs in this Country have been sold out. And the Amercian people need to wake up, and throw there Senators, and Congressman out, Term Limits is what we need, otherwise we will lose United States of America. We need to take care of our Country before we let people come in to this Country, we need a moratorium period for Imigration, and penalize Mexico, for not taking care of their own people, if the Goverment of Mexico would take care of there people, the Mexicans in Mexico, would not want to come to America, I am sure. George Bush does not care about our Country, he Loves War, and loves his Friends, I hope the Lord talks to him,he needs a calling from God, I am sorry but Bush’s mind has been Brainwashed by all the Neokins.

So, let me get this straight;
If one believes in protecting our borders, following US law, and the virtue of the patience of folks waiting in line to do it the correct way, they must somehow be connected to the racists and white supremacists of the 50’s?
I believe that Jesse and Frank James and their family got a raw deal from the railroads. I also believe the railroads to have abused power they were given to claim right-of-ways 100 miles wide for their role in Western expansion… HOWEVER I surely don’t believe that Frank and Jesse sticking up those railroads killing people, and starting their own little (self-serving) war was the correct way to “right injustice”
I voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980, so did a whole bunch of southern racists. Does that put me in league with them?
Lou Dobbs is a narcissistic, egotistical talking head (as opposed to “journalist”) who has hijacked an issue which is important to the majority of the US citizens (including African Americans and some recent immigrant groups.) I cringe when I see Dobbs assaulting folks like Eliot Spitzer who is just attempting to establish order in the hole the Feds have left the States.
Employers (who wave their money around humbling people like Ms Goodman) are making out like Jesse and Frank in Arkansas, Iowa, and many other states across the country. People like Goodman have said “These folks do work other Americans (sic) don’t want” BUT good-payingjobs at Tyson, Perdue, Hormel, and DeCosta were held by citizens for years UNTIL these companies found that illegals worked cheaper, and didn’t call the law when companies violated worker rights.
OH, & BTW many of these chicken cutting jobs were held by black citizens, so maybe it isn’t the strong borders advocates who are racist?

It is great to see Amy and Juan at least attempt to put a historical perspective on the immigration debate. With little effort One can see with very little that nativist movements repeat themselves, only against different immigrant groups (the anti-Catholic movement, the Know Nothings, Eugenics, the anti-Asian campaign) It’s funny that seemingly every time a big name comes on to DN they expect to dominate the show. Yet once they get called out with real questions typically avoided by loyal pundits, they realize that they are out of their safe zone and become defensive. See B. Clinton, Greenspan, and now Dobbs.

While illegal immigration is not the main cause of this country’s economic problems, it does make them worse. It was disappointing to see Goodman and Juan Gonzalez likening the immigration issue today to the immigration issue of the 1880s and 1920s. In those times the U.S. was still a growing economy overall. For 35 years now, though, the U.S. economy has shown that the days of mass prosperity are not going to return. In that context, immigration and outsourcing (two sides of the same coin) makes things worse. Dobbs won’t challenge capitalism, but neither do Goodman and Gonzalez. Dobbs connects with people who do suffer in the job market because of illegal immigration, while Goodman, for all her progressive focus, does precious little to engage working people as working people.

JennyP: You are so off-base, it is almost laughable.
That you would contend that Amy Goodman was rooting for Little Dick Bush to become elected (at any point in history) is beyond comprehension.
Do you actually ever watch or listen to Democracy Now!?
Did you watch today’s session with Lou Dobbs?
Speaking, as you did, of “fascistic bullies”, Dobbs was a bully to the core, interrupting Amy and Juan at every other word, never letting them even finish a sentence. Every time they would call him on his so-called “facts,” and present actual contradictory evidence (his own mouth on his own program), he would use the unprincipled tactic of asking stupid questions like:
How many times did I say that? When did it happen? How many broadcasts (out of zillions) did I have these racist bigots on?
Like it matters. The fact that he ever had such trash on his program is the telling “fact.”
Every time he would find himself challenged he would come back with, ad nauseum, the phrase “The Reality is…” He must have used that phrase 500 times in the 45 minutes he was being interviewed, as if he is the definer of “reality.” He attacked Amy and Juan personally many times, using the same invective you seem to resort to when you fall into gross, and false, generalizations about Amy’s politics and life.
It was sickening. He showed himself today for what he really is. A bully, a fascist, and a racist. I can see how much he is your role model.
Too bad.
Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzales, and the team at Democracy Now! are champions of the oppressed of our country and the world, and they are a beacon of hope to those of us who were beginning to lose it.
They are the best journalists in the country, securing the most interesting and brilliant
minds (with an occasional exception) for in-depth interviews that enlighten and give hope to those of us who have been fighting for peace, justice, and the survival of the planet. Goodman has risked her life to bring important stories never reported in the mainstream media.
Recently, when she suddenly was afflicted with Bell’s Palsy, which immobilized one side of her face, she continued broadcasting on television, not missing even one day, letting her audience know what was happening to her, but not dwelling on it. Would you do that? I doubt it. Your vanity would preclude such bravery and commitment.
I have been watching Democracy Now! everyday, often twice a day, for years. I’ve read Amy’s two books she wrote with her brother, David Goodman, and have attended gatherings in my city to hear her speak truth to power…with passion, humility, and humor. She is eloquent, intelligent, compassionate, and accessible to her audiences.
Clearly, you know nothing about Amy Goodman.
She works tirelessly doing the broadcast 5 days a week, then traveling around the country speaking truth to power at colleges, universities, and other gatherings. She is a true hero.
You need to confront your jealousy.

Amy Goodman, welcome to irony!
The first bit of irony is supposed reporter Goodman taking what the SPLC - a group with an indirect link to the Mexican government - says at face value. Perhaps Amy Goodman could update this piece with a disclosure of the SPLC’s indirect link to that government.
The second bit is Goodman pretending that where a graphic comes from matters; similar graphics can be found on many sites like aztlan.net or similar, and I’m pretty sure they aren’t linked to the CCC.
And, the third bit of irony concerns Goodman’s past “reporting”. She should go back and ask Max Blumenthal to correct all the misleading statements he made on her show. After doing that, she can tell us why when she interviewed an immigration march organizer you forgot to mention that he’s an official with Mexico’s PRD Party.
Let’s see some of your famous “reporting”, Ms. Goodman.

This is part two of my original post, had to split it up because it contained too many characters for one post. Please read the one below, first.
Amy Goodman attempts to attack and demean Lou Dobbs, because he has been the lone voice speaking out against the exploitation of poor people, and he’s actually woken up the sleeping giant, the American people.. and she and her rabid parasitical pals can’t have that..
Even worse, when he points out that the governments of Mexico and others in Latin America are extremely wealthy, and could raise wage standards, and even increase taxes on the wealthiest in those countries and the corporations. That illegals coming here undermine the efforts of activists in their home countries who strive to bring about change. Amy Goodman works to protect the status quo in those countries. In fact, were the late senator Robert Kennedy alive today, saying the same things he said in the ‘60s, that we should protect our own poor, and help lift them out of poverty, that we should reject the corporate interests that seek to exploit illegal alien labor, and that we should stand with the poor in places like Latin America to demand their governments increase wages and opportunity, Amy Goodman would attempt to paint him a racist and xenophobe as well.
I have to ask as well, given that Goodman’s hero, Ralph Nader was in fact truly nationalistic and rather xenophobic, why she didn’t criticize him? Perhaps because Nader’s candidacy was for her a means to impose Bush, and the suffering he would impose on the most powerless.
So like her heroes, the Stalins, the Maos, the nazis she must demean those who speak out, reduce them to hateful terms so as to render them as being less than. Amy Goodman doesn’t believe in freedom and liberty.. it’s inconvenient because those concepts require a two way street. Goodman wants her own freedom, to deny us our own. In short, she is one of those fascistic bullies we’ve seen throughout history, and she’s constructed a nice little mythology to excuse her behavior to others and even herself… that she knows what is better for all of us, than we do ourselves. Despots from the beginning of time have done the same thing, and for the same corrupt and hateful reasons, because they hate and seek to warp and control others oppressively.

The problem with Amy Goodman’s rationale is that she herself is guilty of what she accuses Lou Dobbs of doing. Making cheap shots purely for the sake of her own narrow minded agenda. Now, I’m sure Ms. Goodman and her sort will attempt to dismiss my complaints as those of a white racist. I’m a Native American, and have seen the poverty that exists across the US among American citizens, who are Black, Brown and White. They exist, they did the jobs the Ms. Goodmans, the George Bushs and the corporate elites want people to think Americans simply do not do. They want you to ignore the reports that poor young Americans, Black, Brown and White can not find jobs upon finishing high school.. because she and her sort hope Americans give up hope and become desolate enough that they are more easily exploitable.. in short if reduced to the sort of third world poverty that feeds the fascistic pipedream of “revolution”.
There is no empathy for the poverty that exists in Latin America, or for the illegal aliens (yes, it is the appropriate term, it refers to foreign nationals who enter the country illegally or who remain here illegally) she attempts to exploit for her own exploitation.. and yes, using one group of poor people, to pit them against another for blind ideological purposes is exploitation. In short she is no different than the George Bush she rationalized electing back in 2000 with other extremist ideologues.. for the reason of imposing mass suffering on the American people. I can only surmise that this is her way of telling poor American citizens who are long term un and underemployed to eat cake?
Ms Goodman knows that the US has been bleeding jobs since the 1980s, she’s well aware that NAFTA sent even more jobs to Mexico, jobs that had been previously held by American citizens.. and those jobs have never been replaced. Since then the jobs bleed has continued at an even faster pace. Yet Ms. Goodman can’t be bothered to care about the suffering that has gone on as a result.
Now, in spite of the long term un and underemployment of American citizen workers, and the very real poverty that has resulted. The homelessness, the privation. The fact that despite the MSM and the so called alternative media (when’s the last time Goodman, or the hypocrites at Air America Radio, or NPR have ever covered this reality? I can tell you, NEVER) ignoring the realities, news about ever increasing rates of malnutrition and anemia being diagnosed among poor Americans, anemia among poor women and girls at numbers we haven’t seen since the great depression, has trickled out there.
Each week, more American citizen families are evicted from their apartments because they have lost jobs or aren’t earning enough. They lose their homes. Yet even the so called “alternative” media, the ones who claimed they were needed to counter the lack of reporting by the MSM, can’t bring themselves to spend even a miniscule amount of air time to discuss these realities.
Perhaps Ms. Goodman hates poor Americans, and feels entitled to dismiss them as less than human.. perhaps the same way those like her rationalized the slave trade, or the genocide against native peoples the world over. Her sort believe they are far superior and entitle to exploit and feed parasitically off the slave laboring and suffering of the poor.

CESAR CHAVEZ: ANTI-MEXICAN RACIST ?
Cesar Chavez in his day was no more tolerant of illegal immigration than the Minutemen are now. Worried about the hiring of illegal immigrants driving down wages, Chavezaccording to numerous historical accountsinstructed union members to call the Immigration and Naturalization Service to report the presence of illegal immigrants in the fields and demand that the agency deport them. UFW officials were even known to picket INS offices to demand a crackdown on illegal immigrants.
In 1973 the union set up a wet line to prevent Mexican immigrants from entering the United States. Under the guidance of Chavezs cousin Manuel, UFW members tried at first to convince the immigrants not to cross. When that did not work, they physically attacked the immigrants and left some bloody in the process.
