Coulter’s Insufferable Suffrage Tirade

By Marie Cocco

WASHINGTON—Of course there had to be a critique of her jacket, the fitted tangerine number she wore to a nationally televised Democratic debate in July. And if you’ve followed the psychoanalytic theories offered up about Hillary and Bill Clinton over the years, you had to anticipate the L-word, too: “How do you respond to the occasional rumor that you’re a lesbian?” Sean Kennedy of The Advocate was compelled to ask. (“It’s not true,” she answered.)

We’ve endured the great cleavage colloquy about a V-neck she wore beneath a perfectly senatorial suit while speaking on the Senate floor. This was followed soon enough by Freudian chatter about the Clinton “cackle”—is it for real? Or is her robust laugh just a sign that she’s feeling pretty good about her front-running campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination?

So goes the preliminary psychobabble over what is, for an awful lot of people, the positively unnerving prospect of the first female president. The opening rounds were predictable enough, but they didn’t slow Clinton’s rise to the top of the presidential campaign pyramid. So a new theory of how to Stop Hillary Clinton Now is offered: Deny American women the right to vote.

Granted, this bit of political wisdom sprang from the lips of right-wing commentator Ann Coulter, whose barbed tongue has been known to wag faster than her brain’s ability to keep up. But surely a deep dread of a Democrat as president—let alone the creation of an icon for the ages in the person of Hillary Clinton—has some folks unhinged.

“If we took away women’s right to vote, we’d never have to worry about another Democrat president,” Coulter told The New York Observer. “It’s kind of a pipe dream, it’s a personal fantasy of mine, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women.”

This sentiment wasn’t heard in 2004, when “security moms” were all the rage. These were former “soccer moms” who were presumably so scared that their kids would be attacked by terrorists that they raced from the practice fields to the protective embrace of George W. Bush.

There’s a reason the media pay such attention to the political mom-of-the-moment: White, married, women are the only group of women among whom Republicans can make substantial electoral inroads. In the 2006 congressional elections—while women voters as a whole were powering Democrats to control of Capitol Hill—married women actually cast their ballots for Republicans, 50 to 48, according to a CNN exit poll. But 64 percent of unmarried women voted Democratic.

And as it happens, they practically adore Clinton. They see her as “strong, smart, tough, experienced,” Celinda Lake, the Democratic pollster who studies women’s political attitudes, told me in the early months of the 2008 campaign. “And they’re not as sensitive to the personal issues as married women are—they’re not married. They don’t have all this Sturm und Drang about whether she should have stayed with (Bill) or not.”

So who among these women would Coulter return to political bondage? Are they elderly grandmothers? Widows of servicemen killed in Iraq and Afghanistan? Women who’ve divorced an abusive or violent husband? Single mothers who work at Wal-Mart by day and waitress at the diner by night?

    All of the above, apparently.

Coulter, responding to my queries by e-mail, told me that though women comprise more than half the American electorate, their “fecklessness” is a problem and so they shouldn’t be allowed the ballot. At least she does not go so far as to say she’d strip only Democratic female voters of the suffrage. After all, there’s no definitive way to tell a 2004 “security mom” from a 2008 Clinton stalwart. “Our girls won’t protest,” Coulter said of Republicans. “They’ll take a hit for the cause.’’

The cause is not only electing a Republican president. It’s keeping a woman out of the White House. “This has been a long-standing position of mine,” Coulter says of her desire to disenfranchise women. However, the prospect of the first female president is “yet another predicate of why women should not be allowed to vote.”

The sexist static surrounding Clinton’s candidacy has given way pretty quickly to misogyny, and she hasn’t yet won a single primary. What comes next—binding her feet?

I do not doubt that Clinton is ready for this ugliness. Are we?

Ann Coulter has to say something sensational now and then to get press and stay in the spotlight.

Whether or not she has convictions regarding the matter is irrelevant.

The reason she gets away with it is that she is blonde.

All the Right-Wing media whores, her, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, etc., know that an outragous statement, an on-air blow-up, etc., only serves their own interests by getting them MORE COVERAGE!

Although the MSM will probably not ever stop covering their exploits, one can hope that those like Coulter and Imus and Limbaugh will eventually say something that gets THEIR SPONSORS to stop enabling them!

I guess we disagree here. I have no illusions that “Bill Gates gives from the heart” or “that he gives with no strings. He devised the most cynical charity ruse known to man. He gave almost 2 Billion (over five years) to libraries, UNDER CONDITION that they used the money for computer based learning. then he sold them (at a slight discount) Microsoft software.

This scam results in a perfectly legal dual deduction worth more to Gates personally, at his income level, than the actual gift.

My comment about Gates and Buffet had to do with the duo’s unison chant that the tax cuts were BAD FOR THEIR BUSINESS! The point being, not only is GWB unconcerned about middle-class-workers, he is an incompetent economic leader, despite his Harvard MBA

I get the “talking point” memos too and like a dutiful soldier, Marie Cocco prepared her attack article. Do you folks realize that this is how the political blogsphere operates these days? Dems issue “suggested” blog topics and “talking points” as part of their campaigns and the Marie Cocco’s oblige. You consume it. Hook, line, sinker.

This site is primarily a Democratic leaning reading audience so ask yourself why the democratic party must target you with propaganda? Are you not a good enough demy all by yourself that you need to be pumped with this crap? They are forming your thoughts on issues….

I have listened to Ann Coulter many times, have read her books and I can say that I agree with 90% of what she has to say. Before you critique her, at least read her work. My motto anyway.

Of course the Democratic Party wants to silence her. She speaks the truth and they are left looking like a bunch of ignorant children.

If Conservative Yankee (#106084) has run across any of this old Savage’s other comments hereabouts, he may’ve noticed they make frequent reference to the TAME Two-leggeds who’re stuck inside the globe-girdling contraption called “civilization.”  The Book of Changes suggests the necessity of “meeting others halfway,” in order to effect any kind of potentially worthwhile communication.  Turtle Island’s Native languages generally are a good deal more accurately descriptive of our Living Arrangement here, but we’ll have to introduce English speakers to those a little at a time.

Meanwhile, using words our domesticated Sisters and Brothers here are familiar with, even if sometimes in ways they’re not used-to, will just have to do for now.  The somewhat de-natured output of the recording artists Conservative Yankee mentions here fills that bill nicely.  Besides, you could hear that “line” in just about any Montana border-town saloon (where things often got pretty crazy, if not exactly genuinely wild) for a long time before those guys set it to music.  That seems to be true with a lot of “hooks” from a lot of popular songs, particularly in the C & W field….thus their popularity?

The phrase in-question has the additional virtue of being, diagnostically speaking, precisely applicable to the present case-in-point.  This Child is wild, but not at all interested in adding to the captive peoples’ already overwhelming burden of fear and confusion.

No blame, just fact….that’s OUR motto, for today.

Here are some Coulter classics:  From her Dec. 21, 2005 syndicated column:  “I think the government should be spying on all Arabs, engaging in torture as a televised spectator sport, dropping daisy cutters wontonly throughout the Middle Ease and sending liberals to Guantanamo.”  Appearing on CNBC’s Kudlow & Cramer on Feb. 7, 2005, when discussing whether the U.S. military was targeting journalists, the testy Coulter observed:  “Would that it were so!”  In a Jan. 10, 2005 article appearing in the New York Observer, Coulter was quoted:  “I’m getting a little fed up with hearing about, oh, ‘civilian’ casualties.  I think we ought to nuke North Korea right now just to give the rest of the world a warning.”  In Cruel & Unusual Mark Crispin Miller quotes Coulter’s earlier remarks at a right-wing conference:  “We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed too.”  Glenn Beck, when he was Clear Channel’s radio host, was not one to be outdone by America’s Eva Braun.  During the May 17, 2005 broadcast of The Glenn Beck Program, Beck, who began anchoring CNN’s Headline News on May 8, 2006, said:  “Hang on; let me tell you what I’m thinking.  I’m thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I’m wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it.  No, I think I could.  I think he could be looking me in the eye, and I could just be chok, ing the life out—is this wrong?”  During a May 11, 2006 broadcast, Beck stated:  “I say we nuke the bastards.  In fact, it doesn’t have to be Iran.  It can be everwhere, any place that disagrees with me.”

Don Imus was appropriated sacked for a racist and sexist remarked.  Dan Rather was inappropriately fired for telling the truth about how strings were pulled to get dubya into the Texas Air National Guard to evade Vietnam and how our Coward-in-Chief then failed to meet his service commitment.

But pundits who openly call for mass murder, torture and sending “liberals” to Guantanamo rise to the very top.  What does that tell you about the status of the propaganda network, which we commonly refer to as the corporate media.  Bill Moyers said it best.  “I came to see that news is what people want to keep hidden, and everything else is publicity.”

P.S. CY, Eva Braun was every bit the sociopathic Nazi as was her lover, Adolf.  Coulter is Eva without a steady beau.

It’s good to remember that here in these latter days there’s really no business BUT “show business.”  Absolutely every media-made impression domesticated people have (of the condition their condition is in) has been and is being very carefully (and expensively) staged.

A difficulty most of ‘em struggle with, though, is that they’ve misplaced their “program.”  So few have any idea just where in the hell they are now in the great pyramid-scheme of self-dramatizing personalities and awesome special-effects.  When characters like Coulter and Limbaugh and Britney and Michael and Craig and Cooper, et alia, appear in their myriads to strut their stuff for fifteen minutes of faux fame, joining the long-time leading stock villains and mock heroes whose names, though legion, are inter-changeable and unimportant, “How much longer?” (as the chorus in that Dylan song asks over-and-over) before the final curtain comes down?

Remember, it’s ALL make-believe.  Outside the virtual hot-house of this over-crowded on-fire theater-of-the-artificially-abominable, the actual Song ‘n’ Dance of LifeHerownself goes on as always….free, wild, natural, beautiful.

So the masses and mobs of those making-up the captive audience can be of good cheer….“All (their) trials, lawd, will soon be over.”  Meantime, has anybody else noticed the recent precipitous decline in the over-all quality of the acting “actors” these days?

This old Indian wonders why anybody’s still even bothering to watch.

Doesn’t Ann Coulter sort of fit that bimbo starlet image?

Inciting others to kill liberals or all others who differ in their point of view is to encourage hate crimes. So if some crazed person goes out and kills the type of people Ann Coulter wants eliminated, doesn’t that make her an accessory before and after the fact? Since they would have done so per her instruction. Also it could be considered trying to incite a riot if things got out of hand.

What the hell kind of a God do these demented people claim they worship? Sounds more like the dark one to me. Notice it doesn’t say dominion over other people. From what I have read in the bible, people were to be the care takers of the animals and the earth.God said in the bible that those who destroy his creation will also be destroyed.Well Ann?

“When contemplating college liberals, you really regret once again that John Walker is not getting the death penalty. We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors.”

“We don’t want someone who will get 98 percent of the vote. We want someone who will get 51 percent of the vote.”

“God gave us the earth. We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees. God said, ‘Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It’s yours.’”

Ann Coulter’s latest incarnation: “Judas Goat”

Yet it’s totally consistent with her marshalling forces for fascism. Take away women’s right to vote and 51% of the electorate disappears—and women favor Democrats by about 53-47%

Next take away the right to vote for Blacks—they are working on it.  That’s another 10% of the voting public-and 90% vote Democratic.

Next, take away Hispanics’ right to vote (Hey, they’re all illegals anyway, right Annie?) They are, what? 15% of the population—they are still about 60-40 or 65-35% Democratic.

Annie has now whittled down the voting pop to 37% of what it was and that 37% is much more re-thuglican than Democrat.

Next, find ways to declare all but “tame” democrats (like Joe Lieberman or Alan Holmes) actually subversives and take away THEIR right to vote too.  They must still make up about 40% of the remaining population—-so that 37% becomes 23% of the original voting public.  Annie will probably be satisfied with that.

“Democracy”, where 23% of the voting age public, all rock-solid rethuglicans, are the only ones allowed to vote—according to Nazi-Ann Coulter.

Purplewolf,
THIS was my ‘day maker’ for the day, and I desperately needed the chuckle.
•  Ann Coulter, your doctor will see you now in surgery for you “Addadicktomy Procedure”.
But, don’t we suspect that she/it/whatever…already HAS one? Maybe just a replacement procedure, or…an ADDITIONAL one. (the guys will be so jealous)

Myronh,
To your idealism, I salute. You write:
•  Something good will come out of all this. Health, education and social security as well as climate-change imperatives and rebuilding infrastructure will take their rightful precedence over the war-mongers and the profiteers and egotists of the military-industrial complex.
If I could believe this, especially about the rightful precedence of the war-mongers et all, and the military-industrial complex, I’d have Hillary’s name tattooed on my ankle. (well, maybe not quite that) Thing is, she is perfectly capable of fixing some of these things that you’ve mentioned. The problem is that for her, it will not likely ever take precedence over the supporting of the military-industrial complex, OR the profiteers. Simply because…she is just as pro-war as the rest. When Hillary speaks of ‘American interests’ in the Middle East, she’s talking about the same ones the Cheney team is after. The OIL. So, only for those Americans who feel the same hubris, (That it is OUR oil, under Middle Eastern soil) would she be a benefit. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind, that Hillary will keep the war going, and even expand it. That does nothing for ‘we the people’.
•  If you don’t like what is happening now in Washington, you better get behind the Hillary campaign, because she is the only one with enough experience, leadership, and intelligence to be able to make all the needed changes. Don’t let personality conflicts cloud your opinion of Hillary.

She does have the experience and the intelligence. For most Americans of at least average intelligence, the ‘personality thing’ doesn’t even count. (I have no troubles with her ‘personality’). The troubles are with her basic alliance with the same war-mongers that we have in the spots now. She’ll never give up that pursuit. (of the oil) and that will be the death of us all. (or at least most of us).

Meantime Marie, I’m with the others on giving the Coulter dude ANY media attention, in print or elsewhere.

Unless you’re writing her up as some sort of scientific freak of nature from a science journal, we’d just as soon not discuss her anymore. It’s enough that folks know that specimens like her DO exist, if only to avoid any contamination.

Beyond that…YUCK. I’d rather take my chances in a Florida swamp.

Com’on Jim, that’s a bit unfair to Thomas. He is just an unfortunate inferior human who chose to kiss up to get along in life and found himself being used by some very un-nice folks for their own ends. I doubt he understands today.

This woman, on the other hand, is, I suspect in complete understanding of her actions and the possible consequences…...and does not care as long as she gets hers.

Please stop writing about Ann Coulter, unless she dies or Bush appoints her to be the Secretary of State.  The only people who would actually be influenced by this woman’s rants are already too far gone to save.  She’s no threat…just an annoyance.

Homeless, mentally ill people in my city also rail senselessly and piss all over.  If you’re not going to write about them, please stop writing about her.

incredible!

they put people like Coulter and Limbaugh and Trixie’s boy and the Fox gang of idiots out there to draw fire so no one gets on the really stupid ones in the GOP who deserve your scorn and derision . . . ones like George Bush—-either one will do. If any of the supposedly left leaning pundits or writers made all the stupid remarks and errors that these lightning rods do, he or she would be drummed out of the party, or at least sent to some backwater place like Pensacola to languish.

Trouble is that you lefties fall into the trap and treat the stupid right wingers the same way you would your own, which of course is just what they want; you waste your time and talent going after nincompoopish nonentities instead of looking for the real culprits and their real motives.

Anything to keep you from talking about oil and how stupid the pupppet dictator is.

Out of the mouth of the obviously malformed.

Finally the mystery is solved.
Coulter is not a woman!

“Our girls won’t protest,” Coulter said of Republicans. “They’ll take a hit for the cause.’’ She boasts.

And she’s possibly right! If you ever stop worrying about the horrible way those poor veiled women of Islam are treated ... take a look at the way the republican women are treated. Particularly the “Christian” ones.

Oh they don’t have to wear a veil, or hide in the closet [as far as we know] but they are absolutely forbidden to think. Or feel, or heaven forbid challenge anything they are told.

Bought and paid for, the Madonna/Whore, beautiful/ugly, empty headed repub/Christo female gender, waits for permission to do as they are told.

Coulters right on about that one. Not sure exactly what “she” is, though. This kind of insanity could never have come out of the brain of anyone of the feminine gender. Even the really dumb ones.

Coulter probably doesn’t even realize how completely irrelevant she/he/it/?/ has finally rendered that voice.

Since I do not watch television news shows (my stomach is just not that strong), I have never seen this woman, but I think she has the same value as the entire group of thugs who have seized control of government and communications and most of the institutions of society. They are beacons for the future.

IF WE DO NOT “GET IT” AND UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS THE RESULT OF DECADES OF PLANNING BY A FEW WHO DO NOT VALUE A DECENT SOCIETY AND WORLD BECAUSE THEY ARE COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM IT, THEN WE DESERVE THE HORROR.

Rush and Ann are the best friends Hill-the-business-shill has. She doesn’t have to talk about her Health care industry contributions, her co-chairmanship of the India Caucus, her advocacy of unlimited H-1b visas.  Her support for the Pardon of FALN terrorists All she has to do is say “poor me” I’m a victim… and it will get her votes.

Ann is an Idiot, and Rush is a pathetic clown, but Hill is a shill, and no support from her far right friends will change that.  A US worker, regardless of gender, who votes for the business shill is voting against their self interest.  Hill is part of the problem we need to jettison.

If she feels the need for women to not be allowed to vote, maybe for herself it would be an asset, but you do not speak for all women. TURN IN YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION CARD ANNIE,leave the rest of the women who actually have something going on upstairs retain their right to vote. After seeing the MESS REPUBLICANS have made of this country, it should be the men who are not allowed to vote.

Next, will Ann try to demote women back to the status of property of the husband and to the point in history where women were considered to be less than a whole person unless she was married, and then still retain the position of a non-person as the woman would be considered PROPERTY of the husband.

I’m in the “Ann Who?” camp. I find the subtler forms of propaganda exercised by the Times, Ms Cocco’s Post, the CPB, and so on and on, insulting enough without subjecting myself to the flannel-mouths at Fox.

I’d agree that Ms Coulter is beneath Ms Cocco’s attention. Antic Annie makes her living by being outrageous. If we are not outraged, she just piddles her way into oblivion.

She could be strategically useful, though, to progressives with an entree to the national debate. One might pretend to take her seriously and ask the big right wing players - Romney, Rudy, McCain, Gingrich, Paul - whether they agree with her. Insert a question into one of those dog-and-pony shows that pass under the rubric of “debates”. Say…“Do you agree with Ann Coulter that women should be disenfranchised for the good of the conservative agenda?” And then you just kick back to enjoy the spectacle of a total Coulter media melt-down.

Yours for an open society,

I am a single woman, from Minnesota and I vote for the person whose actions speak to me.  This means no chance at a primary or a caucus, cuz what if there’s a Green or and Independent or a Socialist who has the best potential?

Women think about the future, and we split tickets all the time.  Maybe that’s the reason we “shouldn’t” have the vote?

No doubt Ann Coulter is a product of neocon think tanks. They have spendt million supporting hate-mongering figures like her. She is directly or indirectly on their payroll.

The right wing think tanks (TTs) had a bunch of former government employees who worked for Reagan and Bush Sr. and there was no perceived great threat among Democrats—even though it was understood that they were spending hundreds of millions of dollars on these think tanks. When we look back, we know that really, they were quite effective. They came up with their research on Paula Jones. They harassed president Clinton like gnats, distracting him, sapping his energy, sabotaging him and keeping him and his political allies from doing all that they could political agenda-wise.

Now, the PNAC and other right wing TTs have placed literally dozens of their comrades in high positions in government, in the military, in the diplomatic corps, and now, we know that these think tanks are more than places where people do simple research. Now, we can go back and look at the reports that came out in the late nineties and recognize the power of the strategies that they used to build support, to build opinion, to consolidate and solidify many different groups, to get their ideas, to get their policies backed up and supported by the religious right, by judges. This was no simple little grass roots campaign effort. This effort, for some of the TTs, has extended over 20 years.

Entertaining Quote from Tattlesnake:
As for Coulter, here’s one aspect of her ‘appeal’ that has always given the Tattlesnake a belly laugh: Young Republicans drooling over mean-mouthed harpy Ann Coulter as the epitome of sexy womanhood; a stick-thin pop-eyed Olive Oyl who may have the long blonde hair of the seductive siren but is in every other respect a degenerate Mannish Boy straight out of Fellini’s Satyricon — sharp-tongued, angular, coarse, cruel, unloving, thoroughly unfeminine. It’s a testament to their cluelessness as to what this says about their own sexuality: they want to be screwed by a nasty dyke (or perhaps an unflattering peek into their relationship with their mothers).

Is this the kind of good Christian woman virile Wonder-Bread Republican men want to settle down with — or just slum up with at the No-Tel Motel for a little adulterous ’side of Newt’ action while the Church Lady Missus sits at home knitting booties for their fifth child in five years?

Ann Coulter is one of those freaky women who will do anything, say anything and be anything so long as it gets them attention. “Look at me”, they say and we are all supposed to look and admire. If we don’t admire at least we are supposed to look. Problem with that is that there are always younger, smarter, better looking females waiting in the wings to take the “look at me” top spot and little annoying Annie is getting too long in the tooth to be considered toothsome.

She can’t even be relegated to the “starter wife” category since she seems to have failed in her conservative duty to subjugate herself to some man and procreate. So she just gets louder, shriller and more outrageous with every comment. If she wasn’t such a loathsome creature you could almost feel sorry for her. On reflection, nah.

And, as always, it comes down to gender, not the actual person. I hate Hillary, personally. If it was another girl running, however, I would probably vote for her. We need a girl to be the president; nothing is more of a slap to racist and sexist people than to see that the leader of a free country is female.

Hell, look at Bush. You can’t honestly say that a woman would do worse than him…on grounds of being a woman.

I think that it’s funny that the far right is talking about women not deserving the vote. Oh yeah…that’s how you win support: tell half of the nation that they don’t deserve to vote. If Hillary wins, they’ll bitch about it being women’s fault.

I hate politics.
