The Illusion of Progress in IraqPosted on Sep 14, 2007By Joe Conason Following two days of carefully staged theatrics on Capitol Hill and cable television, the essential facts about Iraq remain unchanged. Despite the big charts and the blustering fanfare highlighted by Fox News, neither Gen. David H. Petraeus nor Ambassador Ryan Crocker could convincingly claim that the American military escalation in Iraq is achieving its original goals. Having assured us last spring that we would learn by September whether the so-called “surge” is a success according to those benchmarks, the general and the diplomat now ask us to disregard the original measures, look elsewhere for wisps of hope, and give the Bush plan still another six months. By then, of course, there will not be enough troops available to continue the escalation. While Petraeus sought to portray the eventual withdrawal of several brigades as the result of “success,” the truth is that the Army, Marines and National Guard will soon reach the breaking point. Meanwhile, our soldiers and Marines remain mired in a slow-moving civil war whose casualties can be measured not only in the dead and wounded but in the dispossessed, by the hundreds of thousands. Where the Pentagon claims that measurable violence has diminished, especially in Baghdad, the underlying reason is often that either Shia or Sunni families have been forced to flee by death squads or militias. Rather than confront the dismal facts on the ground, both Petraeus and Crocker predictably emphasized a more uplifting assessment from recent developments in Anbar Province. The ambassador had no choice but to confess his deep “frustration” over the Iraqi government’s daily failures, yet professed to find hope in the Anbar experience and the Iraqi government’s response. Advertisement As long ago as last January, during his Senate confirmation hearings, Petraeus first noted that the tribal leaders had shifted their allegiance against al-Qaida. At the time he said, “Right now there appears to be a trend in the positive direction where sheiks are stepping up and they do want to be affiliated with and supported by the U.S. Marines and Army forces who are in Anbar Province.” Open warfare between the jihadists and the sheiks happily coincided with the arrival of additional U.S. forces in Iraq over the following months. The general cleverly dispatched 4,000 of those troops to Anbar, and proceeded to take credit for a trend he knew was already under way. Crocker’s role in the political exploitation of that coincidence was to cajole the Shia-dominated central government in Baghdad into pretending to be delighted with the new alliance between the Sunni sheiks and the U.S. Army. The honest response of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his ministers to this development was closer to pure horror, and a threat to transfer his own party’s loyalties even more firmly to Iran. Regardless of these unsettling nuances, Crocker made the very most of the Anbar situation in his House testimony on Monday. Confessing that he didn’t expect the Baghdad government to fulfill the benchmarks set forth last winter as the reasons for the surge, he swiftly turned to those hopeful glimmers from west of the capital. “I frankly do not expect that we are going to see rapid progress through these benchmarks,” admitted the ambassador. “It is important to remind ourselves that the benchmarks are not an end to themselves; they are a means to national reconciliation. And I think it is very important that we maintain a sense of tactical flexibility and encourage the Iraqis to do the same, to seize opportunities to advance national reconciliation when they arise, as we have seen in Anbar and as we have seen in the government’s response to Anbar, through distributing additional budget resources to this province and bringing in its young men into security forces. So while I would certainly share disappointment that progress has been slow on legislative benchmarks, that, to my mind, does not mean there has been no progress toward reconciliation. There has been.” In other words, we must forget about all the agreed benchmarks, gaze instead upon a contrived tableau of reconciliation in a single province, and pretend to see progress. ...returning to the scene of the crime…
“success” has no meaning when you refuse to admit your goal.
We have success in Iraq——-so long as you accept the premise that all we ever wanted there was control of their oil. A minimal few dead Americans and some badly wounded ones are no great price to pay to rescue America and its wealthy journalists from bankruptcy and all the killing and starvation THAT would bring in its wake.
And don’t ever believe that success will let us leave the killing fields and EVER own up to the truth about our coveting and lying and murdering and stealing.
1. It’s about oil; it’s always about oil.
2. Bush is a moron.
There is no 3.

The real illusion concerning Iraq is it’s legality. The Bush administration,( as well as Ron Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, William Kristol et al.)should be tried at the International Court for war crimes. This is a totally criminal misadventure. So no matter how much progress they lie about it doesn’t make the crime disappear. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield and the rest ot the cabal are criminals. They are no better than Pinochet or Saddam himself. Americans need to open their eyes and see this criminal enterprise for what it truly is and stop accepting any kind of illusion.

The deceitful neo-cons will replicate Bush through Giuliani. Neo-cons love to dupe the American people who are cannon fodder for their dreams of power. Giulani, a total inept, was mainly famous for his tough actions against street pedlars and squeegee people before the neo-cons elevated him to their front man.

Its important to remember that failure is not the primary or essential reason that the Iraq war is wrong and must be ended immediately.
The Iraq war was an unnecessary war sold to the US public with lies. As such, it is a war of aggression, the greatest of war crimes, and must be stopped regardless of the prospects for success. Equally essential is that the parties responsible must be made to submit to criminal prosecution for the crime.
Opponents of this war must not allow themselves to be distracted by arguments concerning whether or not the Iraq war can be successfully concluded. For decent, sane people, there is no such thing as success in an undertaking that is inherently criminal.

Though morally we have the right, a legal coda keeps us from firing this legal guardian for any reason, and he knows it.
Ocjim,
I like the legal guardian analogy, because that is what it feels like. We, as a huge population of citizens of these United States, remind me of the cases that come along when a minor has legitimate reasons to request emancipation from their legal guardians, be they parents or otherwise.
But, youre off on the part about any legality that prevents us from firing him. In reality, our Constitution DEMANDS that we fire them. Thats exactly why the framers wrote the impeachment instructions into the Constitution, and the language isnt the least bit ambiguous. Not the least bit difficult to understand.
So, the only thing preventing us from firing them is power politics. Either that, or our Congress and other elected officials dont understand what their jobs are. So, whether theyre KNOWLINGLY guilty of not doing their jobs, (like Nancy Pelosi or any of the blue dog democrats), or if theyre just ignorant, and dont know the Constitution or the job requirements, they have failed to do what the law requires, and so they have certainly failed us. Because, theyve taken life and death issues and reduced them to partisan power politics.
Whoevers fault it is, (and we have to take a bunch of the responsibility ourselves) the Gangsters in the White House should have been impeached long ago, just on general principal .massive violations of every law or every land Crimes against humanity, and treason. And because of the magnitude of the crimes committed by this gang of thugs, this is not a partisan issue. Every single member of Congress, (if they were exercising their duties responsibly), should have impeached them long ago, and then followed up with the appropriate prosecutions.
Meantime, SamSnedegar said all the important stuff in his earlier post.(#100351) It’s about oil, and it’s about greed, if we’re talking about Iraq, which is only ONE of the reasons that the Thugs should be run out of dodge.

~I frankly do not expect that we are going to see rapid progress through these benchmarks, admitted the ambassador. It is important to remind ourselves that the benchmarks are not an end to themselves; they are a means to national reconciliation.~
Thats from Ambassador Crocker, who may or may not have a clue himself, to what the real agenda has been all along. I dont know. Naturally, hes acting like he doesnt realize that these alleged benchmarks were all BS to begin with, because the whole surge theme of allegedly providing this breathing room that the Iraqis never asked for, was BS as well.
The benchmarks have been nothing more than another episode in the whole drama something to keep Congress busy (making up all of these benchmarks) while extending the funding for the acquisition of Iraqs oil. And, thats the only benchmark that this administration has ever been interested in. Dick Cheney and his team couldnt care less whether the Iraqis reconcile. In fact, that was NEVER the plan. The plan was to control the oil, and that hydrocarbon law is the only benchmark he cares about. NOT because it supposedly involves a distribution of oil revenues among the Iraqis, but because it codifies a distribution that leaves the Iraqis ENTIRELY OUT.
And, thats exactly why we see that Hunt Oil of Dallas, has just done a side deal with the Kurds, for the theft of Northern regions oil. That can hardly be interpreted as encouraging any political reconciliation of Iraqis, but rather more in line with the tail end of the divide, conquer, and rule strategy thats been in effect all along.
Just makes me wonder why Crocker doesnt seem to be up to speed on the real agenda. Or, maybe he is. I dont know.
The General however, is just lying. Smoke and mirrors stuff.

you know people , actually the LEADERS are right, there has been tremendous “PROGRESS” in IRAQ, its just that many people like you and me cant see it. let me try and recount it to you.
IRAQ has been sprayed with DEPLETED URANIUM so all population is going to die a fast cancerous death. THAT IS PROGRESS.
According to US sources, since the invasion, on the average 100000 to 300000 barrels of oil go “MISSING” EVERYDAY, OF course it goes to the ZIONIST corporations who charge ( people like you ) money for it and of course they make loads of money, NOW THAT IS PROGRESS.
Then if you look around hard enough you can find that some (Slightly decent) American Soldiers are refusing to KILL ANYMORE as according to them they have already knowingly and deiberately KILLED so many that they no longer even desire to think about killing anymore and HENCE they refuse to return to the killing fields again. Kind of progress to get ordainary killers to quit killing.
and then So far atleast ONE MILLION are dead and about 4 MILLION have been forced to leave their homes so that SOLDIERS CAN ASSIST the organised LOOTING OF IRAQI OIL and SINCE they are “hadjis” and dont speak “English” (and therefore are NOT HUMANS) SO THIS ELIMINATION OF “Hadjis” is Progress too.
AND not to forget, the payments being made to the American Leaders for this complaince to the ZIONISTIC AGENDAs and that is “direct PROGRESS” in the bank accounts of the likes of Bu$h, Chainey, Condomnliza etc. NOW THAT IS THE REAL PROGRESS.
Other than that, IRAQIs used to have DULL, NORMAL & BORING lives, BUT now they are busy scurrying around 24/7 to save their lives, NOW that is PROGRESS.
you see people, Simpletons like U & me can never ever see anything BUT THE LEADERS are right there has been tremendous progress.
Oh before i forget, another newly reported progress is that THE IRAQI CHRISTIAN minority, that used to be welcome in IRAQ till the fall of SADDAM, no longer feel certain about their possible existance in the next short term future unless they are given shelter elsewhere in the world. NOW THAT TOO IS PROGRESS.
Have to Accept it like it is being transmitted all over the Bloody Zionistic Medias or you are making the “HONEST AMERICAN PATRIOTIC LEADERS” look like LIARS (that THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN) or you might invoke the wrath of these GODs.

So our “used war” salesman is at it again. Spraying a little new war smell in his broken down Iraq war model and trying to sell it as new to what few customers he has left.
If there is a hell - I hope there’s a special part of it reserved for Bu$h - if not, just let him loose in the middle of Baghdad by himself and see how long he lasts. Look at those expressionless doll like eyes of his - there is nothing there. He can’t even believe what he’s saying. It’s like watching the animatrons of Disneyworld going through the motions.

Bush and Petraeus have been holding up Anbar as the model for success.
http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/world-news/article2962054.ece#
Well, most likely BECAUSE Bush shook his hand, made a big todo about it, the guy he shook hands with leading in Anbar is assasinated. How typical. This is the success story. Why is this “success story” not at LEAST as big as the Smith woman, or kidnapped child? WHEN things like this become more newsworthy is when we will know we have at least STARTED to take things seriously. Til then, there is no hope.

“...neither General David H. Petraeus nor Ambassador Ryan Crocker could convincingly claim that the American military escalation in Iraq is achieving its original goals…”
Please come back when you can and state succinctly just what those original goals are.
I think I recall some LIES told about a “surge” when the Bushitter gang of thugs evidently needed to sent crack troops to guard the oilfields and pipelines, but since EVERYTHING the Bushitter gang of thugs has EVER told us was a lie, there wasn’t much point to their lies about how the surge would “clean up this area, and move on to the next,” because what was really going on was the movement of crack airborne troops into the oilfields while the reserves were reassigned to Baghdad and other places of little or no consequence to the Bushitter gang of thugs—-who only care about oil, nothing else about Iraq.
If you can’t cope with oil as the raison de guerre, then you won’t ever be telling the truth about Iraq yourself. If there were no oil there, then there would be no Americans there or mildly interested in going there, let alone staying there in the middle of a bloody civil war we created by the forcible removal of OUR OWN strong man, Saddam, who incidentally kept order the same way we only try to do, by killing and torturing to find dissidents and insurgents.
I also find it strange that the Jon Stewart show won’t mention oil, even as they skewer the Bushitter gang of thugs daily—-or as daily as they can get with 2 hours a week and endless vacations.
What it comes down to is that Americans don’t like admitting to coveting, lying, stealing, and killing, so they pretend that they aren’t doing all four of those things as a result of needing to steal Iraq’s oil for their economic survival.
To their credit in a sly way, the Bushitter gang of thugs did just what they set out to do: steal control of Iraq’s oil. It is just that they (and you) refuse to admit that this nefarious goal, which has been met completely, was ever part of their plan or strategy. Wonder why there is no “exit strategy” for the Iraq adventure? well, it’s because there is no plan ever to exit, and there never has been one. You can’t control the oil from afar; you have to be there, or some other thief will take your booty.

Report thisWhen one starts out with smoke and mirrors, it is really difficult to switch over to reality.
Especially when the titular leader has no idea what reality consists of.
And it is becoming harder by the day as more and more Republican’s are opening their eyes and seeing the reality that is Iraq under the Shrub.
