It’s Obama and Oprah vs. Hillary and Hsu:  Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are pulling support from a wide range of sources as they campaign for office.

By Bill Boyarsky

The most maddening view of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination is found in an excellent Los Angeles Times column, Cause Célebrè, which reports on how Hollywood’s super-rich are buying their way into the campaign.

Columnist Tina Daunt examines celebrity politics in the manner of a skilled anthropologist as she relates how political fund-raising is affected by the culture and social relations of the celebrities who dwell in what she describes as the world west of Doheny Boulevard.  “In Hollywood, everything is about relationships—not only cultivating them but also tending them,” she wrote recently. “The bigger the name, the larger the need for attention.”

Even people who are bored by politics appreciate Daunt because she writes about celebrities.  Her column about one of the biggest names, Oprah Winfrey, was really maddening to me because it was such a perfect example of the outsized influence of big names.  Winfrey is hostess to the year’s most famous political fund-raiser so far, the Sept. 8 party for Barack Obama at her Santa Barbara-area estate.  The cheapest ticket is $2,300.  Mingling with celebrities will require the guest to raise $25,000.  Those raising $50,000 can stay for dinner.

Why am I writing about this?  Our readers care much more about other issues, like the war and the economy, not celebrities.

True, the war is the No. 1 issue of the election campaign.  But the candidates’ stated positions on Iraq are profoundly depressing to anyone who believes we should just get out.  Faced with staunch Republican opposition, Senate Democrats are pulling away from a plan for a withdrawal deadline next spring.  Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Obama and Joe Biden want to leave a scaled-down force in Iraq after a withdrawal by next March 31. That means that, even under a Democratic administration, there will be troops there for a long time.

Real debate over the war is being submerged in the mush of the campaign.  The hottest phrase among Democrats has been “change,” whatever that harmless word means.  In Sen. Clinton’s first New Hampshire commercial, the war was briefly mentioned in a litany about how “we will end this war, we will give health coverage to everyone, we will be energy independent. ... If we’re ready for change, she’s ready to lead.” In Sen. Obama’s first Iowa commercial, entitled “Change,” he promised, “We’re going to take our country back.”

I struggled through Fred Thompson’s 15-minute announcement on the Fred ‘08 website without getting a clue to how the newest Republican hopeful feels about the war.

With such pap being thrown around, and being reported uncritically by the mainstream political correspondents, it is more satisfying to turn to something real.  That’s why I read Daunt and the other reporters who keep their eyes on the contributors.  The contributors, after all, are going to have the most say in Washington, no matter who wins.

First of all, I am not going to say anything bad about Oprah Winfrey. She has brought doing good to new heights and is so rich and popular that no politician can do anything for her.  Washington would kill for what the Washington Post called “The Oprah Constituency”: 8.4 million daily TV show viewers; 2.3 million monthly visits to her website; 2 million magazine readers; 420,000 weekly newsletter readers; and 360,000 subscribers to Oprah Alert e-mails.

It’s some—or maybe many—of the guests, also known as donors, at events such as the Winfrey bash who worry me.  You just don’t happen to get an invitation to Promised Land, her 42-acre estate, along with a link to Mapquest showing you how to get there.  A bundler probably put you on the list.

A bundler is someone with the ability to assemble large numbers of people who will contribute up to the $4,600 allowed by federal law. That’s $2,300 for the primaries and $2,300 for the general election, which can be given in one $4,600 bunch.

The candidate, the campaign national finance chair or even well-meaning celebrity hosts and hostesses such as Winfrey may not know much about the bundlers or the people they solicit.  But figures from the Center for Responsive Politics show how money has been assembled in large quantities for Obama and Clinton, the two best-financed Democratic candidates.  A substantial amount of this money has come from businesses dependent on current, pending or promised legislation in Washington.

Not all of these contributors are going to demand a quid pro quo for their money.  But a lot of them will expect something.  And with the search for money so desperate this year, campaigns aren’t too fussy in who they enlist as contributors or bundlers.

That explains the meteoric rise in the political world of Norman Hsu, a previously unknown person connected to the apparel business.  On the strength of his bundling skill, he moved into the top rank of politics.  He was a member of the Hillraisers, a group of Clinton’s top bundlers, until he was exposed as a fugitive from an old California fraud case.  Political givers with shadowy backgrounds are not uncommon in California and New York, where money buys a place at the power or social table, no questions asked.

A cure for this is full public financing of campaigns.  But that won’t happen quickly, if ever.  All we have to rely on now are reporters and political reform organizations such as the Center for Responsive Politics to track federal reports and publicize the contributions.  With them, at least we know what’s happening, even if we don’t like it.

The Israel Lobby has been castrating Republicans and Democrats since time immemorial - they’re VERY experienced. Of course, many aspiring American politicians (especially presidential candidates) desire to sing in the Zionist castrati choir. Think people like H. Clinton are immune from being castrated by Zionists? - think again and listen to her voice! (or ask Bill) wink

The American Zionist Party has 2 wings: Republicans and Democrats who are loyal to Israel. Sometimes, an Independent candidate starts flapping for attention from Israel: Joseph Lieberman - who has loyalties that are greater than his POD (Party of the Day). wink

In my opinion, the war is lost; anyone voting is insulting his human dignity and intelligence. The Democrats won the majority only because the Republicans wanted them to. Despite the Democrats have a majority they are a castrated party that has no power to change things. With globalization, you can’t have the people in the US making fifty dollar an hour and the Far East making fifty cents an hour. If I made thig-a –majigs (Only an old timer knows what a thig-a – majig is) and was paying my workers fifty dollars an hour and my competitor was paying his workers fifty cent an hour, how could I compete with him? We can’t have ships from the fifty cent people coming here loaded to the gills and ships going back to the Far East almost empty. The only way an American company can compete with a foreign company (Not owned by the foreigners, but rather by the British or their American colony) is to go over there and feast on the cheap labor. What happens to the decent paying jobs? They will all vanish. What will the Americans do for income? The right-wing Republicans will have to kick the asses of the immigrants out of the country that have dead-end jobs and give them to the white Americans.

As a life long Democrat, I would appreciate your sharing the good points about the current Democratic candidates, especially Hillary.
I found her attempt to justify accepting bribes to be lame in the extreme.
Her deciding to refund the Asians’ bribe after it was announced that she would donate it to charity is another black mark against her.
Pelosi promised a crackdown on lobbyist’s influence on the Hill, and then went straight to a $10,000/plate fundraiser staged by a lobbyist.
Gravel seems to be good, but he can’t get mentioned. Dennis K has some good points, but he can’t get anything going either.
Obama, having gotten most of his money from individuals before Oprah jumped in, is a good man, but his race and early religion are two factors that will be hard to overcome.

kevin99999 asks, “Do you really think federal government gives a damn about sectarian violence?”

Of course they do, Kevin.  That is why the U.S., under Negroponte, introduced the Salvador option where they first armed and funded the Shiite militia death squads, ostensibly to target Sunni insurgents, but which degenerated into ethnic cleansing of Sunnis from Shiite enclaves.  Now they are arming and funding the former Sunni insurgents, the ones we previous labeled as “terrorists” but whom our officers now refer to as “freedom fighters.” Thes “freedom fighters” are now carrying ethnic cleansing of Shiite from Sunni enclaves.

It’s a basic strategy as old as imperialism.  Divide and conquer.  In this case, it provides the added bonus that Bush can point to the very chaos he created and say, “There’ll be a bloodbath if we leave.” Of course, as in all wars of aggression, responsibility for such bloodbaths lies with the imperial invaders and their tactics.

I understand your feeling that voting is a fraud. But that is exactly why we should continue to exercise our franchise and vote. With only 15 to 20 % of registered voters bothering to vote, a true elected candidate will never be in office. And I continue to be amazed that major media has already determined who are our choices. I’m starting to understand why some of these states want their choice heard first.

We need to impeach the entire Congressional leadership for failing to impeach Bush, Cheney and Gonzales.  The Democrats currently in charge expressly swore during their oath of office to defend the Constitution.  There has never been a bigger threat to the Constitution than the high crime machinations and misdemeanors of the gang in the White House.  If none of them are willing to defend the Constitution, then we need to remove them all and elect some who will.

In the quest for fairness, Truthdig will display articles from the spectrum of all political beliefs. When I see an article that is negative towards the Democrats I’m sure to find comments by the rightys in our midst using the occasion to throw crap on the good name of the Democratic candidates instead of debating the issues. If I were a righty I wouldn’t debate the issues as well because I would be so ashamed of the sad intensive care the country has been placed into by the Republicans.

Years ago you could have your picture taken with the cardboard figure of whoever was President around D.C. for about $5. As a result we’ve consistently elected more and more cardboard figures into office. Like everything else it just costs more to do it today.

By the way for anyone that’s counting the national debt has officially hit $9 Trillion. People like Ron Paul and Mike Gravel that actually question how we’re going to pay for the promises the other “candidates” make are the ones that should be taken seriously. It’s the only way we’ll be able to break the national habit of recycling political cardboard.

KYJurisDoctor:  Surely you gest!  You direct us to a site that disses Move.On because it called Petreaus “General Betray Us;” a site which praised the lead Republi-crook in the Senate Mitch McConnell?

We have been consistently lied to by the Bush administration and the Pentagon--lies that have cost the lives of nearly 4,000 of our men and women in uniform (and counting), tens of thousands of permanent injuries, the deaths of as many as one million Iraqi civilians and the displacement of as many as three million more.

Compare the happy tale of progress in Anbar told by Betray Us with that furnished by filmaker Rick Rowly who exposed how American forces have been arming and funding the same Anbar Sunni insurgents who had been attacking U.S. forces.  Six months ago, General Betray Us and others referred to these individuals as “terrorists.” In the Rowly video, the American officers now refer to them as “freedom fighters.” (Do you recall the 1980s when the U.S. funded and armed the mujahideen in Afghanistan, outfits that included one Osama bin Laden.  President Reagan referred to them as “freedom fighters.” Now we just call them al Qaeda.) (Of course, the U.S., as part of classic imperial strategy, has done its share to fund Shiite militias and their death squads as well.)

The former Anbar insurgents turned “freedom fighters” have now, via their new, but no doubt ephemeral, rapproachment with the American occupation force, provided context to what dubya’s fall back justification for this illegal and imperial war of aggression and occupation where the mission to spread democracy and freedom replaced the already discredited WMD and links to 9/11.  Our new “freedom fighter” allies have used the arms we furnished to carry out a murderous ethnic cleansing campaign designed to drive the Shiite out of Anbar province.

When asked to compare Iraq now from his previous trips, Rowley commented:  “It’s infinitely worse than it was the last time we were there.  I mean, the Tigris River is bloated with corpses.  The city of Baghdad is divided up into armed camps.  There are snipers who take people out as they enter and leave neighborhoods like al-Amiriya....We heard Petraeus and Crocker say that staying is hard, but leaving is worse.  I would flip that...leaving is going to be hard...but staying is infinitely worse.”

http://www.democracynow.org/print.pl?sid=07/09/11/1424208

Consider also the following exerpts from the 9/10/07 article in “The Independent UK.” Baghdad, seven months into the surge is “a city divided by high concrete walls, barbed wire and checkpoints; armoured columns moving through deserted evening streets lit by the glow of searchlights and emptied by official curfew and fear....On the surface, the Iraqi capital is less overtly violent than it used to be....But for many Iraqis, the Americans have turned their land into a prison.”

http://www.thruthout.org/docs_2006/printer_091007F.html

Referring to those who praised military conquest on behalf of imperial Rome, the ancient Roman historian, Tacitus, observed:  “They create devastation and call it peace.” Bush, McConnell, Betray Us and Ambassador What a Crock have altered that.  “They create chaos and call it progress.”

I wonder as Oprah lionizes these pols; does she ever wonder what happens to the rest of us ‘unwashed masses?’ During the recent Petraeus hearings in both the Senate and the House; protesters were ousted, arrested, manhandled by capitol police, and denied their right to petition the government for redress of grievances.  In the House hearings Rep. Ike Skelton illegally denied individual citizens their constitutional rights.  A minister was seen on video being harassed and then beaten down by about eight capitol police thugs. His only crime was wearing a small political button that identified him as a dissident.  He was told by police that he could not enter the hearings to even observe.  When he refused to leave, claiming he was waiting in line; the police proceeded to tackle him football style, and in the resulting violent attack on this minister; they broke his leg.  Ironically, several suited politicos were able to enter at any time.  This minister will now have to face trumped up fraudulent charges of ‘assaulting an officer.’ How does this play against the tape?  Someone was brutally assaulted but it wasn’t the nazi cops.  Both Pelosi’s and Reid’s offices claim they have no control over the capitol police.  Since when?  Is this an example of the DLC’s tender caring for it’s citizens?  Why aren’t Pelosi’s and Reid’s offices decrying this injustice?  This attitude of police is too reminiscent of Nazi stormtroopers.  I can say that; I had relatives that survived the holocaust.  Why aren’t these officers under arrest?  Time to flood the offices of Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Clinton, etc. with e-mails, phone calls, etc., explicitly telling them they better register their public outrage---or else!  Time to take to the streets and throw the bums out!  Time to embarass the family and friends of such officers over their fascist behavior.  Time to ostracise their families until these officers learn to live like human beings.  I love my country--BUT I’M ASHAMED OF THIS DISGRACEFUL FASCIST NAZI GOVERNMENT.

What does it tell us about America when the leading candidates for the highest political office are presented to us by agents of a foreign government?

And when their candidate is elected but doesn’t ‘toe the line’, they assassinate him (JFK)?

Or when a viable candidate appears who they don’t like, they ‘accident’ him (Paul Wellstone).

Look what happens when one of their obedient but dimwitted “Auslege Goy” (Bush) is inserted into the WH? They get their way - oodles of $$$ and military aid, cluster bombs, attacks on their ‘Greater Israel’ obstacles, etc. And all it took to get things moving in the right direction was to murder a few thousand Americans (9/11) and get their friends in the MSM to go into Orwellian mode: War is Peace, etc.

America is in deep Zionist shit! - and we’ll have to dig ourselves out no matter how unpleasant it’s gonna be! The next step is to elect a president who puts America FIRST and who puts the Zionists out of business! smile That’s Ron Paul.

What possesses and American to worry about Global poverty, when we don’t seem to be making any effort much less headway on poverty here at home??
But I digress.
I was talking to a lady the other day, and she seemed most impressed with candidates who already had enough money to fund his own campaign without having to fund-raise. The thinking seems to be that they are less likely to be bought off by the evil lobbyists and crooked corporations. But I have to disagree.
I’m much more interested in HOW they made their riches....working for crooked corporations, owning shares in them...what HAVE they done to the people to make their money?
In fact, I would like to see them fill out job applications like the poor has to do, putting all their interests, experience, and paid work for the past five years. If there’s nothing wrong with background checks for the working poor, there’s nothing wrong with background checks for the rich. In fact, it’s even MORE important.
And at least, they could get a sense of what we go thru. Let’s see the ole resume....LOL!

I’m still rooting for Paris Hilton for president. Either that or a retard, if there is a difference. For certain I can not stand looking at Hillary Clinton’s ugly mug or Obama’s managed physiognomy. Possibly we could just make George Bush King forever. Even though his lying has become more shrill, his delivery has improved. George said he wanted to be dictator. Possibly he meant dick tater. George should be dictator of something. Saddam Hussein was prematurely executed, so there’s an opening in Iraq for George. He should be allowed to take Dick Cheney with him and they should both be given some sidearms so they could impress the Iraqi people with their great power. Hillary and Obama would look better with sidearms also. Those two packing pistols would somehow lessen their other objectionable physical characteristics.

I love Ron Paul, but don’t see how society can get along if it’s every man for himself. I love Mike Gravel but fear if he ever got a platform to speak to the American people, his brains would be blown out faster than money is spent in Iraq. That pretty much leaves Dennis Kucinich who needs a series of testosterone shots. But I’ll take Dennis any day over the others.

To me, in this age of the Internet, it is fiction that a candidate can’t get elected without having huge sums of money availible.
If donations to candidates were restricted to a more manageable amount for the average citizen, say $2000 at the high end, and then furthur restrict donations to those who are eligible to vote for that candidate, it would take away the influence of lobbyist’s, unions, corporation’s and all other special interest groups.
A candidate such as Ron Paul, Fred Gravel, Dennis K. or others stands no chance realistically against a well heeled candidate.
Candidates don’t need analysts, speechwriter’s etc. to get their message across.
Any candidate who has to rely on someone else to write a speech won’t be able to speak out in Congress. And only telling the voter what some analyst says the voter’s want to hear means that the candidate is a fraud and has no real ‘platform’.
We must demand a real reform in campaign financing, abolishment of the Electoral College, real penalties in the existing ethics laws or we will get more of the same from different candidates.

My compliments to Truthdig for taking on the celebrity scourge.  While I appreciate celebrities who genuinely care about important issues; I take exception with self-aggrandizing potentates reacting before they study the situation and the real players.  I find it difficult to believe that an intelligent businesswomen such as Oprah Winfrey would be uniformed regarding the inclusion of ‘bundlers’ in her fund raiser for Obama.  In order to believe that Oprah was unaware of such political deceit would require you to suspend respect for her intelligence and ingenuity.  Nor can I believe that Hillary was unaware of Norman Hsu’s questionable dealings.  Her reputation as an attorney is one who meticulously checks sources and researches everything including how lint accumulates in the navel.

Why we allow such intelligent people to attempt such sophomoric excuses for political deceit is beyond my comprehension.  The explanations offered by the ‘talking heads’ of the media are as credible as that old gem..."the dog ate my homework.” With these players, by now that poor old dog must be morbidly obese and on his third pacemaker!

All kidding aside, (though these candidates offer SO much good material); we must demand clear direct dialogue with the American people, not society retreats for rich spoiled would be royalty.  IGNORE the celebrity mouths.  INSIST on a direct presentation of WHAT EACH CANDIDATE WOULD DO, HOW THEY WOULD ACCOMPLISH THEIR GOALS AND WHY THEY THINK THEIR PLANS FOR THE COUNTRY WOULD WORK.  MAKE THEM PROVIDE A FULL LIST OF SOURCES TO PROVE THEIR CLAIMS.  MAKE THEM FACE OPEN, UNEXPECTED QUESTIONING FROM THE CITIZENS DIRECTLY AT EACH CAMPAIGN STOP.  MAKE THEM PROVIDE IN PRINT AND CYBER FORM THEIR PLANS IN DETAIL A FULL MONTH BEFORE THE ELECTION.  HOW’S THAT FOR ‘ENTERTAINMENT?’

To show you how the media is rigged in totality except for the Internet (They are working on it) I will give you an example. At first, the British wanted our hero Julie to be the next “President”. Many of the British lords were not happy with him because he was not pretty enough. They wanted someone more pretty so they settled on Arnold Schwarzenegger. Once again the “never satisfied” were not happy. They complained that Schwarzenegger sounded too foreign. Finally, peace was restored on the agreement to call him Arnie. (Sounds more American) One day all of the media were calling him Schwarzenegger and the next day all the media simultaneously were calling him Arnie. (Sounds more American) This tells me that the media is totally controlled by the British except for the Internet (They are working on it) and are reading from the same instruction sheet each day.

Please send Dennis Kucinich $50 or more if you can.  He’s the only one who does not play these games.  It’s up to all of us to stop this madness of a few people dominating the policitcal process.  $50 multiplied by a million people is $50 million.  We either get involved, or we’re doomed to imperial presidencies forever.

The funding that Obama and Clinton have been getting from stars and lobbyists is truly amazing. I wonder if they are capable to get that kind of money for their own campaign, what could they do to raise money for global poverty?
