ACORN Stays the CoursePosted on Aug 3, 2007
The Bush administration’s hit job didn’t work. Despite all the Republican efforts to stop the liberal grass-roots organization ACORN, its workers continue to trudge the streets of urban America, signing up voters in places where the Bush people never venture. The Republicans were never interested in ACORN’s goal of expanding the vote among the economically disadvantaged. Instead, the GOP wants to prevent the poor, especially African-Americans and Latinos, from registering or voting. That’s the Republican way. They know how unlikely it would be for these people to vote Republican. That is why Republican officials demanded voter fraud prosecutions from U.S. attorneys in states where ACORN registered enough voters to worry the Republicans. Two of the U.S. attorneys found no grounds for prosecution and became part of the eight fired by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. I wondered what impact all this would have on ACORN. Did Gonzales slow you down? I asked. “No,” said Alvivon “Bon Bon” Hurd, an ACORN volunteer. “It just makes us stronger.” Hurd is an African-American woman who lives in the Pico Gardens housing project in Boyle Heights, a working-class, largely Latino section of Los Angeles east of the corporate high-rises and the new lofts of downtown. I talked to her and Peter Kuhns, a staff organizer who was recruited by ACORN when he was a student at Pomona College. Each day, from about 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Hurd, Kuhns and other ACORN members go door to door in working-class neighborhoods from Watts in South Los Angeles to Pacoima in the San Fernando Valley, many miles to the north. The ACORN crews work in some of Los Angeles’ toughest neighborhoods, where gang members are shooting it out almost every day. The gangs aren’t hostile to ACORN volunteers, but their members are notoriously bad shots. The danger is being hit by mistake. The ACORN efforts are replicated in the more than 100 cities across the country where the organization has chapters. All of them are confronted with the same problems: the apathy of residents who are sick of bad schools, trash-littered streets and increasingly expensive slum housing. If the government can’t provide basic services, why worry about who is going to be president? “There are so many people who are disillusioned,” said Hurd. So the organizers start with the basics: What are your problems? They listen to a bewildering list of troubles—especially bewildering in Los Angeles, where a confusing multitude of government bodies independently administer the schools, the police, welfare, the public hospitals and many other services. But the organizers have no time for a civics lesson. And who could explain all the complexities of Los Angeles government? I used to write about local government for the Los Angeles Times and usually found it all but impossible to explain. Instead, the ACORN organizers have a simple message: You’ve got to vote. Vote for city council, for school board, and especially next year for president and for Congress. The defeat of the immigration bill gave the latter part of the message a special resonance for Latinos. As imperfect as the bill was, it offered a path to citizenship. This is tremendously important to families in which the parents immigrated illegally and their children, born in America, are citizens. The fear of family separation weighs heavily on them. Kuhns told me that ACORN hopes to register about 1.4 million nationally this year. The drive is especially important in the Southwest and the Far West. Increasing Latino voting is threatening Republicans. In New Mexico, for example, President Bush beat Sen. John Kerry in the last presidential election by just a single point, 50 percent to 49 percent. As I talked to Hurd and Kuhns I again thought about the irrelevancy of much of the campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination—a thought I have every four years. Listening to the ACORN organizers, I wondered who cared about the dispute between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton about meeting with tyrannical dictators abroad. What American president in the last 75 years has not met with a tyrannical dictator? As John Edwards said, “We’ve had two good people, Democratic candidates for president, who’ve spent their time attacking each other, instead of attacking the problems that this country faces. We need to be staying focused on the things that all of us want to do together for America.”
That’s at the heart of Hurd and Kuhns’ mission of enlisting poor and working-class people to organize themselves for better housing, healthcare, a living wage and child care. Certainly the Iraq war is our most important issue, and it is sucking up the energy of the Democratic campaign. But in the world of ACORN, it is one of many afflictions, not as immediate as access to a doctor or food stamps or protection from gangbangers’ stray bullets.

ACORN is currently at the center of what a Seattle Times newspiece says is the biggest voter-registration fraud case in state history.
“Prosecutors say six of the defendants filled out 1,762 phony voter-registration forms in King County and about 50 in Pierce County. The seventh allegedly submitted the forms.”
This from July 27 Times: “Elsewhere, four ACORN canvassers in Kansas City, Mo., have pleaded guilty in federal court to felony voter-registration fraud.”
It doesn’t help liberal causes to have people like Boyarsky engaged in agitprop on this site.

Godsend: My blog made no reference to your comments preventing anyone else from stating their point of view. You are also free to defend that stereotypically racist statement about Barak Obama, my criticism of it was in no way intended to be thinly veiled and stands. I spoke only for myself, and will again. If you or anyone else puts a deliberately sexist or racist remark on a thread I am involved in they can expect to get a paragraph of WTF from me about it from me. We are grownups, let’s act like it, and if you want to take it personally that is your business. I would never take anything on a board like this personally since it an idea board. While I don’t agree with a lot of the ideas, I find many interesting just the same.
Report thisAnd we are in agreement on a couple of things, one being that I do not care one iota whether you or anyone else approves of my ideas, same as you, and second, I do not see my self as a moderator (farthest thing from it). And I am not interested in getting into a long-running firefight with any segment of this board, I have been through that before, though I will stick by my guns on the issues. And I am far from a Neocon: I want to bring them down with a general strike, put Bush in a mental institution, impeach Cheney, cut all ties with both Israel and Islamic countries, and eliminate the Executive Branch of the US government.

My comments here and elsewhere do not prevent anyone from voicing their opinions or exchanging points of view. What I post elsewhere is not subject to criticism here. Vague remarks like the one you made are inappropriate. Address the content of a specific post or withhold comment. I do not consider my remarks about Obama to be racist. The words racism and anti-Semitism are grossly abused to make a thinly veiled personal attack. Don’t do it or you’ll be identified as a probable Neocon - they love to use that tactic.
I’m here (on this thread) to expose the hidden agenda of Zionism. If you are a Zionist yourself or a sympathizer or just blinded by Zionist propaganda, you will not like what I have to say. C’est la vie! Just ignore my posts - I won’t be insulted!

If you want to engage me on one of my posts, be specific, don’t use filthy language (like ‘Lefty’ and Windbag) and substantiate your point or criticism as best you can. If you do that, I will extend to you the courtesy of a thorough and reasoned or otherwise substantiated reply. If you don’t do that, you can expect some of your own MO and medicine or no response. Report thisJust an observation: nearly everywhere I see your blogs, you make your agenda clear. I get it and I think the other members of the board do, and I have only been on board a month. Regardless of my opinion of Obama (the jury is still out, so far I am not terribly encouraged by his candidacy), I don’t think a racist remark is called for. If you think he is another one of your ‘Zionist Shills’, call him one and get on with it, so the other members of the board can engage in a discussion of the real issues-including whether or not he may or not be a Zionist shill. On the other hand, if you ‘want him to go back to his mama’ (or Africa, or wherever), why not save your hate messages for a more appropriate forum? Tell me, since he obviously isn’t a member of the master race, is he a puppet being manipulated by other racially impure evil Zionist conspiracy? To quote on old source, these blogs bore my ass off. But, like I said, soldier on, it is a free country, for now, until the master-race fascists who use hate and fear to run our country eliminate freedom of expression, using the same kind of approach as I see in your blogs.

Here we have an IMPORTANT article on voter registration and what do we get? Every foaming-at-the-mouth anti-semitic neo-nazi vents their hatred of Jews, Israel and Hillary Clinton. They have NOTHING to say about ACORN’s important work or what it can potentially mean. No, just another chance to spew their filth.
Well, I HAPPEN to live in a district in the north east that has gone Republican forever, but as an enclave in a Blue state. Yet in my district there is a HUGE reservoir of Hispanics in several small cities. They don’t vote, but they should. And, if they did, our district would be Democratic into the foreseeable future as they would OVERWHELM the Rethuglicans by at least a 2 to 1 margin. I would LOVE to get ACORN to come into MY district and start working to register these folks--EXACTLY the ones who the Re-thugs want to keep away from the polls. We aren’t a “glam” district, like L.A. but it doesn’t take a very expensive calculator to figure the numbers. And the congressman from MY district has a vote that counts just as much as one from the “glam” part of California. And he wastes that vote every time--whether he casts it or not.
And if it takes Hillary Clinton coming to this district to break that hold, all power to her! How do I contact ACORN? How do I convince them MY district could be a GREAT target for them?
If only DogShit and the other one-track-mind nazis will stop polluting EVERY thread with their hate-filled fecal matter.

Yet, just because she showed up and uttered a couple sentences to an anxious crowd, her picture is preferred to the photo of folks who work their butts off for ACORN everyday? What do Kuhns and Hurd look like? Because, I already know what Hillary looks like. I also know that ACORN never enjoyed the pleasure of her company before she hit the campaign trail, and likely wont enjoy the pleasure of her address in months to come, no matter how parallel their similar agenda objectives tend to run. So, seriously, why did we need this big ass photo of Hillary, and not Hurd and Kuhns?
Isnt all this carriage of Hillary water a little obvious, folks?
Im actually responding to all of your posts on the Hillary photo here, but the one from rage is the best. And, I probably shouldnt admit this, but I read that entire article without ever even noticing Hils photo. I had to go back to find it, after I started reading the comments. Now, I dont know how or why I didnt notice or pay any attention to it, since Im generally pretty observant. But, I missed it. And, thats probably a good thing, since it meant that I appreciated the piece thoroughly, knowing the work that ACORN has done for so many years, and with little attention (and even less support) from the mainstream.
STILL, I overwhelmingly appreciate everyones anger at having a photo of Hil at this event, making that connection in the eyes of the pubic to a group that, as rage so well articulated, shes never had anything to do with before, and never will again.
So yes, we would have preferred photos of Hurd, (whom I have seen photos of) and the other members that are out there doing this work that no one else will do, because as usual, these people have always been ignored by the Republicans. ALWAYS.
BECAUSE… thats who the article is about, not Hil.
On the other hand, maybe these folks have long since determined that they are able to accomplish more WITHOUT their photos plastered all over the place often that is the case. In that case, we could have just done without any photos for this piece.
So, Dear Editors, this was a goof. It’s OK, just don’t do it again. The article is otherwise excellent.

“The drive is especially important in the Southwest and the Far West. Increasing Latino voting is threatening Republicans. In New Mexico, for example, President Bush beat Sen. John Kerry in the last presidential election by just a single point, 50 percent to 49 percent.”
Dumya’s stooges flagrantly cheated. We will never know what the real vote count was. America was robbed in broad daylight of the Presidency in 2000 and 2004.
“Listening to the ACORN organizers, I wondered who cared about the dispute between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton about meeting with tyrannical dictators abroad. What American president in the last 75 years has not met with a tyrannical dictator?”
Obviously, no one cared. Not even Bill Clinton cared, conceding that there were countless ways to negotiate with tyrants.
Which brings me to this point: Why does this story have this big ass picture of Hillary, the Murdock-owned shilling tool? Why not pix of Bon-Bon Hurd or Peter Kuhns, the real subjects and sources of this story?
There is absolutely NOTHING politically or physically attractive about this Bush-Cheney-Murdock owned tool of military-industrial-propaganda corporate person-hood. Hillary’s only hope of winning her party’s nomination is that enough desperate naive dupes come to believe that she will be the political reincarnation of her husband. Having been duped by Dumya into supporting the preemptive invasion of a sovereign nation that did not attack America leads me to suspect Hillary is not quite the Rhodes Scholar Bill was though. Furthermore, she’s deeper in bed with insurance and healthcare money than many Republicans, making wonder about her commitment to universal health care.
This story has no more to do with Hillary Clinton than it does Barak Obama or John Edwards. Their pictures are not included, though their campaign bullet points are just as on-point with the ACORN agenda as Hillary claims to be. Sure, they try to get us to “feel” that WE don’t count. The facts are we do. They stole the vote and we caught them. I would say that stint pretty much nailed their coffin shut. They’re all done. Now the only ones listening to their rhetoric is each other.
Word of mouth spreads exponentially. There is POWER in numbers. Money can’t buy that, even Mitt Romney doesn’t have that much money. It is fine going house to house in order to get people to vote, but the states that control the voting process will still put more voting machines in the districts that vote Republician so if the people are really interested in voting they well may again have to stand in line for hours, the administration and their helpers will do all they can to discourage the vote, after all they were really surprised when Democrats regained congress, now all Bush can do is attack the congress never mind that the delay among the Republicians will still be going on, but the news people did not make much out of the Bush attak on congress.
