Six Years and CountingPosted on Jul 3, 2007WASHINGTON—I should knock wood before writing this, but why is it that the United States hasn’t seen attempted terrorist bombings such as the ones that fizzled last Friday and Saturday in Britain? The investigation of the botched attacks in London and Glasgow is far from complete, and authorities can’t even be certain that this spasm of intended mayhem has ended. With suspects still being rounded up, it’s hard to tell where these plotters fit on the scale that runs from “trained al-Qaida operative” all the way down to “deluded, suicidal wannabe.” From what we know so far, however, it doesn’t seem that there was anything exotic, or even particularly sophisticated, about the materials used in the two car bombs that failed to explode near Piccadilly Circus. Unless British authorities are holding information back, the not-ready-for-prime-time terrorists packed the cars with propane canisters, gasoline-filled containers and lots of nails to act as shrapnel. Cell phones were supposed to trigger the detonations. We’re not talking plastic explosives or anything like that. All of the stuff that was used could be amassed over a couple of weeks, without drawing suspicion, with a few trips to Home Depot or Lowe’s, any gas station and a store that sells throwaway cell phones—in other words, several visits to your average suburban strip mall. When you also consider the obvious incompetence of the terrorists—they couldn’t make either of the London bombs go off, and the two men who drove a car into the Glasgow airport didn’t even succeed in killing themselves, much less anyone else—it begins to appear that these guys were pretty far down near the “wannabe” end of the spectrum. Even if the plotters turn out to have had links to al-Qaida, the plot itself has a distinctly homemade feel. Advertisement It could be that we’ve just been lucky. (Knock wood again.) It’s certainly true that police agencies here have been much more vigilant than before, but that’s the case in Britain as well. It’s also true that U.S. authorities have broken up several terrorist conspiracies, but those plots—such as the plans to ignite a fuel pipeline and blow up John F. Kennedy Airport in New York—were amateurish, technically unsound and thoroughly penetrated by law enforcement before they got anywhere near the operational stage. I think there are two possible reasons for this long respite from terrorist attacks that the United States has enjoyed. The first is scary: It’s quite possible that al-Qaida has decided not to waste time and assets on small-scale actions here, and instead is determined to make its next assault on the United States even bigger and deadlier than the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. ABCNews.com, quoting an unidentified source, reported Sunday that U.S. officials fear a “spectacular” al-Qaida attack here this summer, but Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff denied that there is any “specific, credible evidence” of any planned attack, spectacular or otherwise. Chertoff has said in the past that preventing another large-scale attack is, necessarily, his agency’s primary focus. But there’s really no way to prevent a bunch of wannabes from shopping at Home Depot, and that brings me to my second possible reason why the United States isn’t being hit the way Britain is. I think we have far fewer wannabes. The radical, anti-Western, jihadist ideas that inspire would-be suicide bombers in Britain and elsewhere in Europe have a much harder time finding receptive ears here—even though it’s the United States that many Muslims around the world believe is leading a modern-day crusade against Islam. I know there are Muslims here who are bitterly angry about U.S. foreign policy under George W. Bush but who do not respond by killing themselves and others. I think that’s because the United States, for all its faults, is still the most inclusive society on Earth. Our nation has a way of making outsiders into participants, a way of convincing people that they are protagonists, not just pawns. The United States can fall short of its promises, but it has a genius for manufacturing possibility. If people have even a glimpse of a better tomorrow, no matter how unbearable today might be, they are less likely to pack a car with explosives and crash into an airport. There’s hope for us yet. Have a happy Fourth of July. Eugene Robinson’s e-mail address is eugenerobinson(at symbol)washpost.com. © 2007, Washington Post Writers Group Elsewhere: . CommentsAre you a Truthdig member yet? While “hope” is not a plan, it does have a way of defusing desperation especially among the gullible, less educated masses.
However, I think the US has escaped more terrorist attacks because of the stunning incompetence of the G.W. Bush administration.
Planning and executing an effective “incident,” I assume, takes a great deal of effort and skill - in other words, work! Perhaps those with mayhem in mind are waiting for Bush to destroy the country without any help from them.
Not an unreasonable consideration.

truthdog, just wanted to say that I finally had a chance to view the entire video that you directed us to. It was definitely proof that the official story was a lie, and that its a lie they continue to perpetrate.
So, thanks. Ive sent that along to help inform the others.

The bush crime family ARE the only terrorists we have to worry about.
Did the “terrorists” do 9/11? No
Did the “terrorists” invade Iraq? No
Did the “terrorists” systematically destroy the Constitution, our rights, freedoms, Habeus Corpus? No
Did the “terrorists” pass The Patriot Act, Real ID Act, Military Commissions Act, John Warner Act? No
Did the “terrorists” give themselves the ability to declare martial law for any reason and keep themselves in power indefinitely? No
Did the “terrorists” build secret detention centers around the country to hold “dissenters” after martial law is declared? No
Did the “terrorists” wiretap our phones? No
Did the “terrorists” fire Federal US Attorneys for purely political reasons? No
Did the “terrorists” disclose an undercover CIA Agent to discredit her husband’s stand against Iraq? No
Did the “terrorists” make one their own lie to a Grand Jury and obstruct justice only to be pardoned by the criminal-in-chief? No
I cannot describe the level of disgust I hold for these criminals in the White House.

The Patriot Act, that very big, very BAD piece of legislation that was passed by almost everyone in both houses of Congress (ALL of the presidential candidates who served in Congress during 9/11 voted for this legislation) has a rider in it that allows the president to suspend the constitution and rule unchecked in case of a catastrophic emergency. Maybe that is the highly anticipated attack of which some in our government speak. There are those who say the Oklahoma bombing was just a precursor to 9/11. There are those who say we should run for cover…....Do we really have a snowball’s chance in Hades of escaping?

The official story of 9/11 is a complete lie.
The ONLY reason why we haven’t had another “terror” attack in this country is simply because the bush crime family hasn’t decided to pull off another fake terror attack - yet.
The criminal-in-chief has been fearing us up for the past six years to prepare us for the “inevitable”.
As we get closer to the 2008 election he will pull off a huge “attack”, probably nuclear, blame Iran, bomb Iran, declare martial law and cancel the election. He will keep himself in power indefinitely.
At that point this country will cease to exist. We won’t even read about it in history books. They’ll even control history.

Knock Wood?
It would be better, Mr.Robinson, to turn on the critical faculty. I will try to help.
These suppossed terrorist attacks played out much as the perpetraitors planned, except for that guy whose clothes caught fire. That was a bonus, not a part of a plan. The purpose was to warn Gordon Brown about a certian line in need of toeing. Mr.Brown responded by using the phrase “We’re all in this together” bringing to mind a partiular scene from A CLOCKWORK ORANGE in which an air hose is changed for a sewage hose. Gordon was saying he too knew of a certian line in need of toeing, and was thinking of switching someones hoses. Then Mr. Brown went ahead and said this morning what he had intended to. Said the Prime Minister has entirely too much power. Was very specific. Is quite right. Intends to make that change, because of recent history.
Recent history not everyone sees the same. Some see the U.S. being attacked by terrorists. Others see the terrorists as straw men. More precisly, Boogymen. Created whole cloth to use to scare children into dependance on daddy. This because of little things, so small some disregard. Like, How did #7 come down? Like, Where was the fifty thousand pounds of jet fuel that should have burned the heck out of the Pentagon? Y’know, little stuff.
Stuff you can overlook, if that is your desire. Small problem, Mr.Robinson, selective perception of reality leads to ineffective copeing strategies. Strategies like faith, the art of believing without evidence. Faith might be a beutiful thing, when applied to the unknowable. Perhaps. But when it is used as a political method the result is uncontrolled power. A firehose without a fireman. Like what we got now.
The proper thing to do, right now, is not to knock wood, or congratulate ourselve because we are just such cool guys everyone has been not attacking us. The proper thing to do now is to look very closely at what Mr.Brown is doing, and do it too. Shut off the water, and put a man on that hose.
Except that just now, it would be a woman.

Consider this:
Suppose someone wants to turn the United States into a Totalitarian State. And suppose the biggest hurdle “that someone” has to overcome is the US citizens peculiar desire to remain free.
And suppose “that someone’s” base support is from an odd mixture of so-called Christians who badly want to see the world destroyed so they can be raptured, and a small group of obscenely wealthy people who will do anything to be even wealthier. But that great majority of “sane” people who just work day and night to make ends meet don’t happen to like the idea that they are being used and abused and lied too ... and absolutely refuse to join the nutty base.
Obviously the “sane” folks are the “obstructionists” keeping the selfish Christians and the greedy wealthy and that wannabe dictator from their sought after goals.
What to do?
First, stage a murderous attack that will terrify the masses.
Then using the excuse of the murderous attack, create government agencies who, without the backing of the law can forcibly control the masses. Then, just to be sure everyone’s got their behinds covered, create a few laws backing up the violence, kidnapping, torture, illegal snooping and illegal detention. Then, when the “sane” people start complaining about the excessive and illegal government power ... keep them at bay by stating over and over again, all the bad stuff their government is doing to them ... is keeping them safe.
That leaves just one more problem ... just saying it isn’t enough.
How do you prove abuse of Constitutional law actually is working in the peoples favor?
Simple ... keep preventing attacks.
Of course you don’t need any real attacks.
A few dummies set up by a few government plants will do.
Once the dummies are “caught” and locked away, the wannabe dictators various agents can pretty well say and do anything they want with their chosen patsies. And, absent free peoples intervention keep the “sane” from learning the truth.
Hey, it worked for Hitler!
Nobody is that stupid, right?
Wrong.
Quite a few actually believe giving up their freedoms is keeping “the bad guys” over there instead of coming here to hurt us. Coincidentally, most of them are hell bent and determined Bush supporters.
The so-called Christians don’t care, because the “worse it gets” the closer they are to being raptured.
The Obscenely wealthy don’t care, because the wannabe dictator has promised them ever increasing wealth.
But thank goodness, there still are enough “sane obstructionists” out there to keep people thinking.
And questioning.
And challenging.
And self-educating.
And sooner or later that quiet majority will stop being quiet.
Sooner I hope!
By the way, Ten-term Congressman Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) announced on the House Floor this week, “Madam Speaker, it’s time for a new exit strategy, one that removes the Vice-President of the United States from office, voluntarily, if he chooses, but by impeachment if he stonewalls ... I am adding my name to H.R. 333, calling for the impeachment ... The Vice President must either resign or face impeachment.”

...“Cheney hasnt scheduled it. Yet. After 9-11, fake alerts have been working just fine. Hes not quite ready to nuke Iran, but when he is hell need another big one. So when everythings ready expect a massive fake prevented attack, or, God help us, another real one, complete with hysteria-producing, Iran-incriminating evidence, similar to the evidence conveniently found by authorities after 9-11:....”
The first line of the response says it all. Cheney hasn’t scheduled it yet. But actually, I think he HAS scheduled it, (which is why we’ve now got all of those warships including 2 aircraft carriers, circling the Persian Gulf, with cannons aimed at Iran). He’s been looking for reasons, (like you said, the same old tired ones)and of course that has included all of this sabre rattling at Iran, to give the world the impression that Iran is doing something “illegal” by developing a nuclear energy program, (also useful for medicine and other sciences)which of course Iran is perfectly entitled to do, under the watchful eyes of the UN’s IAEA. And here again, the IAEA cannot find anything irregular in any of it’s inspections. The only thing the IAEA CANNOT do, is PROVE A NEGATIVE. (They cannot absolutely say that Iran doesn’t have the ‘intention’ to produce weapons grades materials)But, there’s no proof that that “intent” exists. So, it’s just like the thing with Saddam, with everybody claiming that if IRAN gets a nuke, then look out, because they have that “crazy” Islamic set-up, and because of that, and because all Muslims are suicide bombers anyway, if they get a weapon, they would use it to destroy everyone around, INCLUDING themselves.
But the heat on them over the “possible intent” to develope weapons, hasn’t worked like it did with Saddam, so they keep coming up with all of these other complaints. Iran is “meddling” in our destruction of Iraq. Gee, who lives closer to Iraq, Iran or US? And then we had all of those stupid IED’s with “serial numbers” that PROVED they came right from Ahmadinejad’s house. Iran is shipping weapons. Iranians are killing our soldiers. How the hell do THEY know? We’re over there smack dab in the middle of a region that we know NOTHING about. (At least not the ones we’ve put in charge)and they couldn’t tell a Persian Shia from a Sunni Arab if it meant saving their own lives.
So, they are just making all of this stuff up, still shouting in Iran’s face and pointing the bombs, and it amazes me to no end, that Iran has been able to exercise such restraint, because I’d be overwhelming sick of the whole damn bunch of them, from cheney on down.
Anyway, I said all of that to say that cheney is still FULL SPEED AHEAD, and in this case, I think the only thing holding him back, is actually george. (amazing, I know). But by now, enough other people have managed to convince him that it just wouldn’t be a good idea to attack Iran, and that many of the commanders might not be willing to follow such orders.
So, cheney is now looking for an end-run around that, but maybe it does buy us some time.

Ok Eugene, here’s the answer to one of your questions right here, posted by rowdy
...Why is it that the United States hasnt seen attempted terrorist bombings such as the ones that fizzled last Friday and Saturday in Britain?
the answer is simple, there are no terrorists. there never has been. the only terrorists live on pennsylvania ave. 911 was as home grown as my tomatoes. the final act of these would be dictators will be the week of Dec. 25th 2008 when they will blow up many shopping malls and solidify their take over before a new prez is sworn in. long live king george.
He’s right. No real Islamic terrorists. The whole 9-11 attack has always “smelled funny”, but it was so well accompanied by such trauma and immediate brainwashing fear mongering tactics, that most Americans believed it. I mean, we saw it with our own eyes, and with the campaign of propaganda that immediately followed it, (beginning with the shrub saying within a couple or so hours, that we were gonna “hunt these terrorists down”, like the whole “war on terror” theme had already been well honed and rehearsed.
So, most folks forgot about those nagging questions, like how any commercial airliner could possibly bring those towers down as they did. That doesn’t happen. And then there was the crash at the Pentagon, except that there was never any signs that an airliner had crashed there. Same with the United Flight…just a big hole in a field with nothing more. It didn’t add up.
But, not everyone forgot, and now…6 years later, there are far too many more questions than answers, and we’ve been left to accept the fact that we were attacked by our own government. It’s a hard thing to deal with.
On the other hand, that should also relieve a lot of folks. Since the “jihadis” probably weren’t involved, and since we have rounded up and detained hundreds of thousands of “captives/detainees” and tortured them thoroughly, we’ve only been able to actually convict two people of terror related crimes, and both of them (Reid and Khalid)were pretty much “wannabees” themselves. Khalid later confessed to EVERYTHING under the sun, making it a bit difficult to believe he had done much of any of it. Reid was the one that had the bomb in his shoe, (that we were TOLD was highly explosive, and would have caused another catastrophe had the flight attendant not “noticed” it), but that could have been avoided (if true)by having the European airports employ the same explosives checking equipment that is used here in the U.S.
For whatever the reasons, they STILL don’t use this relatively inexpensive equipment in the EU, but for years after that, they’ve had US passenger jumping in and out of their shoes at airports, and now we routinely hassle any body that has a “Middle Eastern” appearance, or drag them off of airplanes in handcuffs, because another frantic moron caught them “praying”.
Meantime, still no “terrists” have been caught. No word from or sightings of Osama in 4 years, (although Zawahiri did check in after the lastest “surge” was announced)and we don’t know if he’s dead or alive and living at Kennebunkport. The shrub said it wasn’t all that important to catch him, but yet the “war on terror” continues on.
Now we know that there has never been a “war on terror”, but rather a “war OF terror”, that the Mob deliberately intiated, by terrorizing US first!!

Frikken Kids, you made me chuckle with this post.
...“I would put my money up with 100 to 1 odds that the author Eugene Robinson is a white man. Probably living in a large city on one of the coasts.”...
In fact, Eugene Robinson is an African-American journalist, although I believe that his “home base” probably is an East Coast city. Then again, with the Internet and all, journalists can live and writefrom just about anywhere I suppose.
Still, from many of the other pieces that I’ve read of his, I’m sure he understands entirely, the obstacles that African-Americans still face today. Matter of fact, he wrote a piece recently, about that very thing, specifically as it applied to such huge urban populations of African-Americans, and particularly the young men.
So, his comment about being an “inclusive” society may have been more of a “standard value” thing, than what we are seeing in reality, during these difficult times of what can only be seen as a major decline for us.
Still, your point is well taken, because we are rapidly taking on the characteristics of the societies that we have invaded, with an increase in sectarianism of all sorts developing right here. I can no longer count “tolerance” or inclusiveness as an American value.
Hopefully we’ll find a way to get back to it.

The author appears, like so many others in the U.S. today, to have forgotten that before 9/11, the largest terrorist act on U.S. soil (the 1995 bombing in Oklahoma City) was committed by extreme right-wing white guys. What are today’s Timothy McVeighs and Terry Nicholses up to? Are they wrapped up in the manufactured possibility of the most inclusive society on Earth? I suspect not. It seems more plausible to me that they’re keeping quiet for the time being because they actually LIKE the people in charge these days. To be honest, though, I really have no idea what goes on in their minds; it just irks me when people exclusively associate terrorism with foreigners in general and muslims in particular.

I would put my money up with 100 to 1 odds that the author Eugene Robinson is a white man. Probably living in a large city on one of the coasts. While I’m a white guy too (and I live in Canada) I can say from just about anything I’ve read regarding racial integration as well as from my admittedly limited vacationing experiences in America, the racial prejudices that dominate so much of that country make it far from “he most inclusive society on earth.”
One very public example: just a few months ago, a major television “news” guy (admittedly, Glen Beck is an ass hole) asked the first Muslim congressman to prove he wasn’t a terrorist.

They have the population just about where they want us. We are divided. We argue without resolution. We talk, vote, talk some more, vote some more but nothing changes. The powers that be are still moving on with their agenda unchecked. Discussion which is normally used to get to the bottom of a matter in this country just muddies the waters more. The more we discuss something the more polarity found within the ranks on the various sides.
We need to be able to discuss and discern but instead we only propagandize and polarize. Discussion only works when facts are worked out of the mess and put together in larger and larger scenes. Then we can see the bigger picture. But facts don’t seem to exist anymore. This nation has somehow found a way to allow both sides to expouse “facts” that normally cannot exist together. There seems to be no authority at all on anything.
For instance, Capital punishment. This is an argument we have been having in this nation for most of my life with no resolution what so ever. Both sides claim undisputable proof, with research, proving that Capital punishment does or does not inhibit violent crime and more specifically murder. So in 30+ years of discussion and research we are still where we were at the start - no authoritative answer. Not even a best estimate.
Statistics can be manipulated. The same set of statistics can often be arranged to prove both points to an argument in this country. So where do we go from here? In a capitalist society is it possible to have an authoritative expert without conflicts of interest? In a highly political society is it? Now what if the society is both? Will we never have answers?
Beyond mere manipulation of statistics we also have the stigmata of meaningless statistics. For instance, our inflation measures. CPI or core inflation is such a wild little creature as to have really no meaning at all.
CPI has been massaged to the point that it says what it is told to. How can this be? Well for one they do not include the biggies - food and fuel. The average American spends his first several working months paying for his taxes, then spends then next several months paying for his food and fuel for the year - the worker is left then with a small percentage for everything else. So when a claim of 3% inflation comes what does it really mean? Nothing. Food inflation is SKY high. Fuel inflation - well need I even say more?
So why is inflation so terrible? Food, fuel, housing all skyrocketing. Could it be the extra 20-30 million people in the country? Could it be failed fuel policy? Could it be world wide demand? Could it be that market economies aren’t efficient <gasp>? Guess we will never know now will we?
So, why mess with that? We don’t need another false flag rally operation. The population is cowed, propagandized, giving up their rights freely, allowing rampant profiteering and corruption…if it ain’t fixed don’t break it!!!
