 Worse Than Watergate, Part IIPosted on May 22, 2007
Let me offer a word in defense of Alberto R. Gonzales now that a majority of U.S. senators, including six Republicans, are poised to demand his resignation as the nation’s top law enforcement officer. The breaking point was last week’s revelation by former Deputy Attorney General James B. Comey that Gonzales paid a rude nighttime visit to then-U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft’s intensive-care hospital room. The goal of bursting into the hospital and alarming Ashcroft’s wife, in a scene reminiscent of “The Godfather,” was to obtain the signature of the semiconscious attorney general upon a document renewing an electronic eavesdropping program that Ashcroft’s Justice Department had concluded was not legal. Gonzales had lied about this secret program in Senate testimony when he claimed that it was not regarded as controversial within the administration; actually, it was so controversial that officials at Justice, from the attorney general to the FBI director, had threatened to resign in protest if it were renewed. But don’t blame Gonzales; he’s just another lightweight zealot exploited by the Cheney White House. Not that Gonzales isn’t a thoroughly loathsome character deserving of Senate rebuke and worse. He has been party to dragging this nation down in the eyes of the world, ordering and justifying torture while shredding the limitations on imperious governance that have been the hallmark of American liberty. Yet while the man has been associated with a pernicious assault on our freedoms, he has never been the independent actor, but rather a dutiful toady carrying out the wishes of a tightly monitored White House with the blessings of the president. That Gonzales was doing the Bush administration’s bidding, authorized on the highest level, was well documented in last week’s Senate hearing. Gonzales was accompanied by then White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card in his nighttime assault on Ashcroft’s hospital room—a surprise visit which, according to Comey’s testimony, was most likely facilitated by a call from the president to Ashcroft’s wife, who stood in frightened vigil over her husband’s semicomatose body. After a suddenly alert Ashcroft managed to lift his head from the pillow and condemn their chicanery before lapsing back into semiconsciousness, it was Card who ordered Comey to go immediately to the White House that night for a dressing down for opposing the president. And President Bush had a private meeting with Comey the next morning to prevent his imminent resignation, as well as that of the head of the FBI and other top Justice Department officials, including Ashcroft. In the most damning moment of his testimony, Comey recounted how Ashcroft’s wife, who had banned all visitors from her husband’s room, called the attorney general’s chief of staff, alarmed that she had received a call from the White House informing her that Gonzales and Card were on their way to the hospital. “I was very upset,” Comey recalled. “I thought I had just witnessed an effort to take advantage of a very sick man.” When asked if he had an idea where the call came from, Comey testified: “I have some recollection that the call was from the president himself, but I don’t know that for sure. It came from the White House.” In any case, the president clearly didn’t disapprove of Gonzales’ tactics, because he subsequently promoted him to attorney general. Comey was a highly respected prosecutor before being appointed by Bush to the No. 2 spot at the Justice Department. It should have alarmed Bush that Comey was so worried about Gonzales’ thuggish behavior that he asked FBI Director Robert Mueller to instruct his agents at the hospital not to allow Gonzales to remove Comey from the room, and that Comey would not meet with the White House staff after this incident unless Solicitor General Theodore Olson was present as a witness. Having researched and written scenes for Oliver Stone’s movie “Nixon,” a devastating portrait of what we then presumed was the low point in the history of the American presidency, I can well predict the good use that a future screenwriter will make of this hospital scene to document the frightening reality, first effectively outlined in a book by John Dean, that the assault on American representative democracy during the Bush years has been “Worse Than Watergate.” Dean was the White House counsel who broke with Nixon over that president’s betrayal of the U.S. Constitution and who revealed the truth in a subsequent Senate hearing. By contrast, as Bush’s counsel, Gonzales eagerly abetted White House crime, lied to the Senate and was rewarded for that behavior. Can you talk while beathing? Both in and out?
Capital letters on the internet are generally conveyed to mean yelling, and someone who follows his own post with another, is generallty believed to be a inhibitor.
I have been privledged to work with the Massachusetts Audubon Society on the grounds of (the former) Fort Devens site, and I have never seen evidence of any construction of “camps” in fact, the old FD security fence was mostly removed ten years ago. They are no more high security areas. and Falcons have roosted in some of the old buildings.
In addition, The Fort Devens property is located near Harvard (the town not the school) and some of the priceiest real estate in the Commonwealth. I doubt if the US is going to build “camps” that anywhere in Blue New England is a intelligent siting plan… There is still a strong libeterian streak in the population here.

National Security 4 us, it sure seems they have plenty of room for someone. Funny too how out here in California all of our prisons are dangerously overcrowded and Arnie is sending state prisoners off to other states to relieve the burden. I have a feeling that with all this added prison space, they have more than just a few state prisoners in mind. From what you’re showing here, the government could easily double or treble the amount of folks we already have locked up!

I have heard about these detention facilities that have been “secretly” springing up throughout the southwest. I do know the government claimed they were going to use them for illegal aliens. I’ve often wondered if that was truly the case or if perhaps in reality they are meant for dissidents and opponents of this current administration.

Well JNargarya I wouldn’t call those exactly non-primary. Perhaps to a corporate CEO. The quotes in the last post I made came from an article by Thom Hartmann. It was called, “Corporations Now have the Right to lie!” I found that specific article while looking for Santa Clara vs Southern Pacific Railroad which is when the robber barons rather deviously declared themselves as living entities, thus enjoying the same rights as the individual.

Hey Lefty! Thomas Jefferson proposed the very thing you are talking about during the writing of the Bill of Rights.
Here it is:
Jefferson and Madison proposed an 11th Amendment to the Constitution that would “ban monopolies in commerce,” making it illegal for corporations to own other corporations, banning them from giving money to politicians or trying to influence elections in any way, restricting corporations to a single business purpose, limiting the lifetime of a corporation to something roughly similar to that of productive humans (20 to 40 years back then), and requiring that the first purpose for which all corporations were created be “to serve the public good.”
The amendment didn’t pass because many argued it was unnecessary: Virtually all states already had such laws on the books from the founding of this nation until the Age of the Robber Barons.

Well thanks for the tip Skruff. I have an old truck and not sure if it could use ethanol. Also I live on the central coast of California. The weather is moderate year round. I suppose I could do it in the Sierra’s in winter. But what about the Department of Tobacco and firearms?

Because you asked I’ll teach you how to make Alcohol which any good country boy should know.
You will need a 55 gallon drum or larger, lots of rotten apples, and a very cold winter.
Mash the apples through a screen, fill the drum with apple juice, put it outside during a cold -20 day, turn it upside down and empty the liquid into a clean vat. anything that is not frozen is alcohol, which can be mixed with gas to form gasahol. burns cleaner too!

Hey Skruff, some good points! Oil and imperial ambition have walked hand in hand for more than a century. I’m only wondering what their next move will be while we “drive” down the inevitable road to exhausted fossil fuels in the next twenty five years. Already we see Bush and company pushing for ethanol, which will no doubt be produced by the same oil companies in charge of this current debacle. Is there anything more emabarrassing than those who haven’t read the Constitution nonetheless being able to determine violations of the Constitution, and demanding conformity with the Constitution by others?
Or is there anything more embarrassing than making political demands, with regard for fact and reality?
The Democrats haven’t yet sufficient votes to get discussion of the question of impeachment out of committee onto the House floor, let alone to draw Articles of Impeachment within the Committee.
The same fashionable disregard for the facts (I’m being polite: “disregard” implies you know the facts to begin with) is seen in the bashings of Democrats for the recent appropriations bill: Not having the votes to do so, they didn’t all vote to oppose it; why be accused of not supporting the troops—it’s a bogus charge which many among the electorate actually believe—with nothing to show for it?
The disreagrded facts? Foremost, with that bill, the Democrats forced Bushit to compromise—a first, and a major accomplishment in itself. Second, it included domestic spending Bushit had opposed. It even included an increase in the minimum wage.
But it’s easier to senselessly bash Democrats—it’s fashionable—than it is to get and know the facts, and deal with those honestly.
As for impeachment: the Democrats don’t yet have the votes for it, that is why it hasn’t been voted on. That is only complicated for the mindless know-it-alls who don’t need the facts because they already know it all.
And the reason they haven’t yet sufficient votes? Republicans have yet to join that effort.
So who do you bash? Democrats. There’s a place with a slew of Democrat-bashers who echo you, why not joing them there: Free Republic.

Nice touch, the WWI history redux… but are you aware that WWI has more in common with today’s conflicts than just that?
Germany, an indrustrial power, starved for Energy made an agreement with The Ottoman Empire that would insure Germany’s and the Ottoman’s continued dominance in their regions. The key was the proposed Berlin to Baghdad Railroad. UNfortunately in getting countries on board, Germany forgot that for a short distance the B to B RR would cross Serbia’s borders. Just a little tippy upper corner.
WW I deprived the German indrustrial machine of the needed energy, the Allied powers billed Germany and Austria/Hungry for the war, bankrupting both countries, and setting the stage for a worldwide depression and eventually WW II

Well Skruff, IE “my countrymen are pussies,” to a degree I’d say you’re right(especially from a chicken-hawk standpoint) but actually I think a better definition can be found in Scott Ritter’s “Idiot America.” The American people simply don’t understand what’s going on. Most of them haven’t a clue about the Bill of Rights or why these laws were implemented to protect us from tyranny. How can we expect them to understand elected officials are our employees if they are bought and paid for by corporate entities? That really makes them “their” employees rather than “our” employees. The real question is, “What can we do about it?”
When government begins privatizing the military, warning lights should abound. Most Americans probably don’t even realize it let alone understand the implications. Just imagine a privatized government with it’s own private army? No draft, no enlistment, just a corporate owned entity made up of battle hardened mercenaries who are only loyal to them! The constitution means nothing. The Bill of Rights mean nothing, oaths of office mean nothing, only the corporate contract. This is where we’re headed!
Some might argue our current military acts this way anyway and to a degree they’d be right. We know of the military industrial complex and it appears what Eisenhower warned us about has finally come true. The only difference is these kids believe they are defending their homeland, the constitution and democracy. They are led to believe they are fighting in a noble cause. But the bottom line is and regardless of the fact, they are our kids dying out there. So we in turn voice our dismay to Washington and our congressional leaders. We commit acts of civil disobedience in some cases. We also peacefully redress government and take our anger out at the polls.
Now with a privately owned and controlled military(Imagine one big Blackwater), we will have virtually no say! At first, we probably won’t even give a damn (who cares if a well paid mercenary gets his head blown off in a war for oil?), but we most certainly should give a damn. Our own kids for example, would be far less willing to gun down or bayonet their own parents. A mercenary however would do it in a nutshell the same way the Pinkerton’s busted union organizers heads in the 1890’s and beyond!
What comes to mind is WW1. WW1 was an imperial conflict between Germany and Britain. Both monarch’s cousins, the grand children of Queen Victoria, vying for imperial dominance. We can go into Serbia, assassination of the duke and all that, but basically it was a war of cousins where millions of people died for their sake and ambitions. The bottom line is Russia, whose people were literally starving and being oppressed at home while her sons were sent to war for the Czar, finally decided after two centuries of imperial abuse that enough was enough and if it weren’t for the naval forces on the Potemkin, their revolution wouldn’t have succeeded. Had there not been a WW1 in the first place and the Czar addressed socio-economical troubles at home, it might never have happened at all and Russia would have remained a monarchy.
