Truthdigger of the Week:  Mary Tillman

Truthdig honors Mary Tillman this week, on behalf of all the mothers whose children have been lost or are risking their lives at war.  Her brave search for the truth about the fate of her son and others sacrificed in the Iraq or Afghanistan war underscores the true significance of Mother’s Day.

Mary Tillman’s April 24 speech before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform about the loss of her son, Pat, in Afghanistan three years ago and the U.S. military’s subsequent attempts to cover up and exploit the story of his death is certainly one of the most powerful testimonials in recent American history.  “This is an ugly war,” she said. “ ... We shouldn’t be allowed to have smokescreens thrown in our face.” Speaking out as she did can’t rectify her family’s loss, but it did demonstrate her own patriotism and honored the sacrifice Pat made—along with the sacrifices made every day by U.S. troops and Iraqis.

Check out two of Truthdig Editor Robert Scheer’s columns about the Tillman case here and here.

Kevin Tillman, Pat’s brother and a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, wrote an arresting article commemorating Pat’s birthday in 2006.

The Nation made its own tribute to Pat’s heroism in this story.

re comment #69903 by Rob.  I don’t know whether you got the idea from Rush Limbaugh, but your attempt to distiguish Mary Tillman and Cindy Sheehan is shallow and nonsensical.

Both women stepped forward to speak out after their sons died in service of a lie.  Cindy Sheehan has been outspoken and has placed herself on the line because she doesn’t want more mothers to experience what she and Mary Tillman have gone through.  This has included, in the tradition of Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr., a williness to be arrested on several occasions as she engages in acts of civil disobedience.

Your effort to pervert Cindy Sheehan’s positive means for dealing with the grief she will live with for the remainder of her life into a search for celebrity status is both vile and repugnant.  It reminds me of a similar charge leveled by America’s Eva Braun, aka Ann Coulter, against the 9/11 widows.

In order to detect the propaganda imagine that instead of an American soldier called “Pat” contributing to the illegal invasion of countries and killing of civilians, we were talking about a Russian “Vladimir”, fighting and dying in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 80s.
I’m sure these comments by a Russian mother would be considered appropriate in the “adversarial” newspaper Ogonyok “opposing” the conservative Pravda in the former Soviet Union:

“Speaking out as she did can’t rectify her family’s loss, but it did demonstrate her own patriotism and honored the sacrifice Vladimir made—along with the sacrifices made every day by Soviet troops and Afghanis.”

Notice how the aggressors are humanized-- they, unlike their victims, are “worthy” victims. Notice how the illegal Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is interpreted as “patriotism”, and how Soviet soldiers and their Afghani collaborators are described as “sacrificing themselves” presumably for some noble --albeit perhaps mistaken-- goal.
Would we, Americans, consider this to be principled criticism of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan?
Well, it’s time to look in the mirror folks…

I’d like to let Mary Tillman know how proud I am to be an American when individuals like her son put their life on the line to defend the principles and freedoms which the Bush administration has been systematically taking away. I am even prouder when Mary Tillman’s determination to bring justice and truth to her noble son’s wrongful death and she continues in the struggle. HPat Tillman’s death and the lies the administration told about his death have me wondering about what Pat Tillman had known about the US Military’s top brass allowing Osama Bin Laden to escape from Tora Bora. I get the sense that if Pat Tillman had discovered such information he wouldn’t be the type to keep quiet about it. Afterall, that’s what heroes do. If he had discovered that the US Top Brass were enabling Osama Bin Laden’s escape, perhaps they targeted him because all of America was in love with him. In the end, Mary Tillman, your son was great and my family thanks him and you for your service to our common cause of Truth, Justice, and the American Way.

A poem given to the late Leo F. Buscaglia , Ph.D. by a student , during the Vietnam War .
_____________________________________________________

Remember the day I borrowed your brand new car and I dented it ?

I thought you’d kill me , but you didn’t ;

And remember the time I dragged you to the beach and you said it would rain and it did .

I thought you’d say I told you so , but you didn’t ;

And remember the time I flirted with all the guys just to make you jealous , and you were .

And remember the time I spilt blueberry pie all over your brand new car rug .

I thought you’d smack me , but you didn’t ;

And the time I forgot to tell you that the dance was formal and you showed up in jeans .

I thought you’d leave me forever , but you didn’t ;

Yes there were lots of things you didn’t do , but you put up with me and you loved me and you protected me .

And there were lots of things I wanted to make up to you when you got back from Vietnam , but you didn’t .

I have nothing but admiration for Tillman and her son. In my mind, she is the anti-Cindy Sheehan.

Sheehan is so woefully disappointing, seemingly enjoying her status as an anti-war celebrity with little conscience whereas Tillman is committed to uncovering truths.

In This Weather ,
In This Wind

In this weather , in this wind

I would never have sent the children out !

They were carried , carried out !

I wasn’t allowed to say anything about it !

In this weather , in this howling storm , I would never have let the children go out ,

I was afraid they would get sick ;

These are just idle thoughts .

In this weather , in this horror ,

I would never have let the children go out ,

I was afraid they would die tommorow ;

but there’s nothing to be done for that now .

In this weather , in this horror ,

I would never sent the children out ,

they were dragged out ,

I wasn’t allowed to say anything about it !

In this weather , in this howling storm , in this wind ,

they rest as if in their mother’s house ,

in fear of no storm ,

covered by God’s hand ,

they rest , they rest as if in their mother’s house .

Pat and Mary Tillman surely caught the Bush Administration off guard when they turned out to be intelligent, thoughtful, and articulate.  The Bushies were probably hoping they’d be ignorant “Okies” who would be unable to make a cogent case against the administration’s devious prevarications.  Surprise!  The Pentagon must have been shocked and depressed when mother and son presented an indictment so forceful and poignant that even the Republicans rallied behind them.

Our troops are suffering. The people of Iraq are suffering. Why is it so hard to see that the war has been ineffective at stopping terrorism. Poverty is a significant cause of unrest, civil strife, a petri dish for terrorists, militants and dictators. Why is it that we continue to address the symptoms of poverty and not the root cause? The primary reason for terrorism is the inequality between lifestyle and monetary wealth. Not Islam versus Christianity. Those may be the terms we are using, but they are the scapegoats and fire-starters that we use to send good men and women into the battlefield, just as those who would use Islam to justify and fuel the suicide bombings.

Dear Mary Tillman ,
First I offer you my condolence for the loss of your wonderful son . What larger sacrifice could a man of Pat’s caliber offer than to give up a promising career , a comfortable life , and a future so full of possibilities , to put those things all aside to serve his country . He and Kevin served with valor and no one could possibly imagine a family more mistreated by the Army , his immediate Chain of Command , and ultimately The Bush/Cheney Administration as the evil , greedy horde of criminals orchestrating this folly they call The War on Terror .
If you did not continually question the facts originally presented to concerning the events surrounding Pat’s death , the truth never would have been exposed . How many more of our troops have met similar or the same fate as Pat only to have their families duped the way the Army attempted to dupe you and your family .
What of the Afghan soldier who died with Pat ? What is ever said of these brave men who fight and die along with our soldiers . I have never heard or read a mention of who this Afghan soldier was . To me this is equally tragic as The Bush Administration has the Afghan people convinced that we are liberators , when we all know that at some point in the near future , the real plan by Bush and Company is to abandon the Afghan Theater and send the remaining troops there to Iraq . Human life is a meaningless comodity to this disgusting President and his creep VP .
Lies and Blood , Blood and Lies - all in the name of Greed ! This President claims to be a Christian . I guess he has forgotten that Christian means to be a disciple of Christ . The only blood Jesus Christ had on his hands was his own . This “Christian President” has the blood of hundreds of thousands staining his .
Mary ,try to accept that Pat’s death was terrible , but not in vain . He was and is still an inspiration to us all .
To Mr . Bush I leave this from the Gospel of Saint Luke .
There was a certain rich man , who was clothed in purple and fine linen ; and feasted sumptuously every day .
And there was a certain beggar , by the name Lazarus , who lay at his gate , full of sores ,
Desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table ; and no one did give him ; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
And it came to pass that the beggar died , and he was carried by Angels into Abraham’s bosom .And the rich man also died ; and he was buried in hell.
And lifting up his eyes when he was in torments , he saw Abraham afar off , and Lazarus in his bosom ;
And he cried and said : Father Abraham , have mercy on me , and send Lazarus , that he may dip the tip of his finger in water , to cool my tongue , for I am tormented in this flame .
And Abraham said to him : Son , remember that thou didst receive good things in thy life-time , and likewise Lazarus evil things : but now he is comforted , and thou art tormented .
And besides all this , between us and you there is fixed a great chaos : so that they who would pass from hence to you , cannot , nor from thence come hither .
And he said : Then , Father , I beseech thee that thou wouldst send him to my father’s house ;
For I have five brethen , that he may testify to them , lest they also come into this place of torments .
And Abraham said to him : They have Moses and the prophets ; let them hear them .
But he said : No , Father Abraham ; but if one went to them from the dead , they will do penance .
And he said to him : If they hear not Moses and the prophets , neither will they believe if one rise again from the dead .

She is absolutely amazing!

I wonder if she and all the other mothers, wives, etc know that ultimately the monster who dares call himself our president is the true murderer of all these heroes.

He was involved with 9/11 - the pretext for everything.

The house of cards MUST come down!

Mrs. Tillman,

We support you and your family asking justice shedding light into the murder of your beloved son and bring those who’re lying to the American people from Bush down to his lowest subordinates.
