President Bush delivering the State of the Union address Tuesday evening.

By Robert Scheer

Stop him before he kills again. That is the judgment of the American people, and indeed of the entire world, as to the performance of our president, and no State of the Union address can erase that dismal verdict.

President Bush has accomplished what Osama bin Laden only dreamed of by disgracing the model of American democracy in the eyes of the world. According to an exhaustive BBC poll, nearly three-quarters of those polled in 25 countries oppose the Bush policy on Iraq, and more than two-thirds believe the U.S. presence in the Middle East destabilizes the region.

In other words, the almost universal support the United States enjoyed after the 9/11 terrorist attacks has been completely squandered, as a majority of the world’s people now believe that our role in the entire world is negative.

“The thing that comes up repeatedly is not just anger about Iraq,” said Steven Kull, the director of the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, which helped conduct the global poll. “The common theme is hypocrisy. The reaction tends to be: ‘You were a champion of a certain set of rules. Now you are breaking your own rules, so you are being hypocritical.’ ”

More depressing, that judgment is shared by those who know us best: our allies in Britain, the only country still willing to share our sacrifices in Bush’s once ballyhooed “Coalition of the Willing.” Despite British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s dogged support of his American chum, fully 81 percent of Britons told the BBC they are opposed to U.S. actions in Iraq, while a scant 14 percent still believe the United States is a stabilizing force in the Mideast.

But it is not just our failure in that all-important region that disgraces us. Those around the world who still believe we play a positive global role has dropped to a miserable 29 percent, strikingly similar to Bush’s overall performance numbers at home, according to the most recent CBS poll. So it’s true: Bush is “a uniter, not a divider”—uniting people across the world in their opposition to his policies.

With a whopping 71 percent saying in an ABC-Washington Post poll that the country is seriously off track, the Post called it “the highest such expression of national pessimism in more than a decade.” And that’s at a time when the economy, presumed to be the all-important bellwether, is in halfway decent shape.

It’s the war, stupid, and ending it is the major concern of most Americans, while all other issues are in single digits of importance to them.

In a shocking twist, Americans are now turning to the Democrats in Congress for leadership on foreign policy. “Three in 5 Americans trust congressional Democrats more than Bush to deal with Iraq, and the same proportion want Congress to try to block his troop-increase plan,” reported the Post. That is a mandate the Democrats ignore at their own peril.

Even an increasing number of congressional Republicans, most recently Sen. John Warner of Virginia, have made it clear that ending this disastrous adventure is vital to their electoral future. Warner, along with several moderates in both parties, proposed legislation on Tuesday opposing Bush’s sending of 21,500 additional troops to Iraq.

In fact, it seems as if everyone gets it except the president and those still hunkered down with him in the White House. “They’ve backed themselves into a tough corner,” GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio told the Post, “and the problem is his continued insistence for the troop increase, which flies in the face of what 70 percent of Americans want.”

He added that it makes Bush seem to say, “I’ll listen to you, but I’ll do what I want anyway.” Hardly the message that the leader of the world’s greatest experiment in representative democracy should be sending to the world. It is a message voters in the midterm election soundly rejected, along with the association of this great country with torture and chicanery, and it is the basis of what the Post calls a mainstream America “honeymoon” with the Democrats.

Americans understand in their gut that the long-term consequences of disillusionment with democracy, here and abroad, would be disastrous. In the same way Congress repudiated an out-of-control president three decades ago, the House and Senate must show the world today that our celebrated system of checks and balances is not just a fanciful mirage.

Spreading the ideal of democracy throughout the world remains a compelling obligation of those who enjoy freedom, making this an excellent occasion to demonstrate that we still possess a system capable of holding a deceitful and egomaniacal leader accountable.

The Bush/Cheney Administration has no choice to support its lackey’s: Ashcroft, Gonzales, Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld et. al. etc., because if they are held accountable by Congress, the American people and the World Bank, it will raise bigger questions pointing directly to the White House. Pelosi may have wanted to not spend her finest hour off on a wild goose chase in Impeachment proceedings but that simple fact is that this is the singular MOST CORRUPT ADMINISTRATION IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES. As Donald Trump has said, EVERYTHING HAS BEEN A LIE since Bush & Cheney came to power. BUSH/CHENEY = NIXON/AGNEW ON STEROIDS. Ironically these big scandals all keep coming at a time that their best friend Rupert Murdoch and NewsCorp. want to come take Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal off the hands of the Bancroft family. The Huffington Post only scratches the surface my friends. To understand what is happening in America, read more alternative news media and the view of journalists from outside this country. Lest their be no doubt that should Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal lose its independence and become another propaganda outlet in the arsenal of Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp., the owner of “Faux News” Network, it will certainly be the end of Democracy as we know it. No individual or corporation should have the opportunity to control, manipulate across such a wide spectrum of print, online and televison/radio news media. Anyone who believes that that meathead and political hacks like Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity are legitimate journalists, is smoking crack. Fascism is killing America.  None of these folks have any respect for the Constitution or the rule of law. They must GO! Why are we worried about communists in Venezuela when we should be focused on the fascists here at home. This administration is worried more about “Free Elections” in Iraq but yet they have done so much damage to the credibility of the electoral process in America. I SHOP AT BANANA REPUBLIC...and now unfortunately, I find myself living in on.

Obama won’t go on Fox because of the false report that he attended an Islamic militant school.

CBS put on a false report from Dan Rather about Bush but I clearly saw Bush go on CBS with Katy...what is the difference.  There is none yet you try to justify Obama.

The only thing I have seen Congress do is offer a non binding resolution....wow...what courage they show.....

Your Dems wont go on Fox because they might have to actually defend their positions.  O’reilly has been on Letterman, Leno and both tried to embrass him....so what are the Dems afraid of?  I have seen O’reilly go up against Al Sharpton and both held their own......If Obama won’t go on because of some perceived false report I find that convienent and I find him to be a big wuz.  If he can’t stand the heat get out......

There is no point in debating you.  To think that the Democrat controlled congress could have already ended the war is completely insane.  They have been in session for less than 60 days and have done more than your republican congress did in a year.

Why would anyone in their right mind go on O’Reilly if he continues to call his guests names, insults them and twists their responses around?

Regarding O’Reilly, John.  I can end this debate quickly.  O’Reilly said if the US did not find any WMD’s in Iraq, which it clearly and factually did not, that he would publicly denounce him and cease supporting him.  He backed out quickly on that promise.  He has been critical of Bush but has never questioned Bush on the intelligence issues, the eventual war with Iran and the need to bring our troops home.

Obama won’t go on Fox because of the false report that he attended an Islamic militant school.  CNN blew that report out of its false underwear within 24 hours.

The situation in Iraq is a result of so many factors that there is not enough space to list them.
We made promises that we did not keep.

Mike I beg to differ.  CBS admitted Rathers mistake and fired him...Rather has never said he made a mistake nor did he ever apologize.  If Liberals are going to demand honesty and accountability from Conservatives then they should certainly show some and offer some themselves when they are dishonest.

Araina is a joke......name the dumbest conservative you can and Araina is that persons mirror image.

As I said earlier I see many conservatives who will go to liberal programs and be grilled.  O’Reilly even went to NBC but when have you seen a liberal go to Fox.  How does Gore not go?  How does Clinton not go, Obama.....the only one who will stand before the Fox people is Al Sharpton and he more than holds his own.

John,
Rather has admitted that he and CBS made a mistake. Hannity has twice on his radio show accused Rather of forging the papers himself. Maybe he mis-spoke but he does play with the facts and often only reports half the facts.

He mocked Ariana Huffington for banning a blogger who on cheered for Cheney’s demise. At the same time I was banned from his site for “insulting the host”.  I did not advocate violence or use sensitive words.  Bit touchy on criticism over at Hannity.com

Geoff I don’t want excuses from the left. I want results.  Dems ran on the “we will end the war” platform and now your answer is “we only been in for 60 days and one of our boys is sick and can’t vote.  Quit making excuse and change the policy. Get us out of Iraq now.  Dems control the $$$$ but they don’t have the guts to do it because the reality is Dems are MORE interested in getting the next president elected...getting Bush impeached...than you are interested in ending the war and saving soliders lives.

I will bet you that you don’t watch Fox but O’Reilly has been very critical of George Bush and he as gone on Oprah, 60 minutes, Letterman and Leno.....now why haven’t I see Obama, Clinton Gore or any other Dem go on his program and answer questions.....except for Al Sharpton.  I will give Al credit for having a pair.  If your dems only want fluff coverage and fluff questions they can stick to the mainstream media but at least Fox guys will challenge the views of others face to face....who do the dems challenge face to face.
I have said this before....we cannot win in Iraq because we are dealing with people who hate America more than they love their own children....I also believe Dems care more about winning the Presidental election than they do about saving the lives of service men NOW!

John,

Fox News is not fair and balanced.  No news network can make that claim without exceptions.  They are all guilty but to make the case for Fox is ridiculous.  They support EVERY SINGLE THING that comes out of the White House. They twist FACTUAL evidence.  Their journalists repeatedly accuse Democrats of “aiding the enemy” or the story of how Barack Obama attended a militant Islamic school as a child.

Democrats have now been in session for still less than 60 days.  We have one Senator who is still hospitalized, which results in having the current imbalance of power.

We will get out of Iraq and thousands of our boys and girls will be saved.

I have never taken a political science class at any level.  My curriculum deals mostly with European history and humanities (literature).

On this website you have the opportunity to watch news clips where people are actually moving the lips and speaking.  I believe it to be a better source than, “Military officials say IED’s coming from Iran”.  This is the same source that said Saddam had WMD’s.

Mike read the responses people here have given to me and you will see the exact same thing. Your response is like the pot calling the kettle black.
You and others assume so much about posters like me here who don’t agree with you....for example you wrote...As your intellectual hero, Sean Hannity, might say....aren’t you assuming and at the same time making a snide comment?
I seriously doubt for a second you watch Fox News but as I have repeatedly asked...IF you don’t think Fox does a good job of being fair and balanced tell me which media or site does a better job?  TRUTHDIG?  The only conservative view is a few people like me who post and tolerate nothing but snide comments, ridicule and rudeness.  NBC is fair?  CBS? Dan Rather lied on the air and never apologized and still doesn’t even though he was fired.  ABC?  Air America?  MSNBC?  Several people have said MSN is more fair but if thats true why are their rating so low?  How about late night TV....OReilly went on Letterman and DL came across as Boorish, rude and intellecutually empty.  Dave is really not very smart about social issues.  What he knows about politics and social issues is whatever he hears his friends say or whatever his handlers tell him to say....But OReilly met Dave on Daves home field and embrassed him....Think DL has the guts to go to Fox and be interviewed.  How about Leno.  I watched him practically have a orgasm on the set when he interviewed Carter one show. Called him one of our greatest Presidents?  JIMMY CARTER?  Worst President in my lifetime and I am 54.  I watch Fox, NBC and a little CNN.  For the most part ABC, CBS and NBC have lost the viewing public because by the time they report the news CNN and Fox have reported the same story 10-12 times that day.
Fox News is what it is....more of a conservation lean, some entertainment and some fluff but they are JUST as fair and any network you watch and MORE FAIR than ABC, CBS and NBC.  If you disagree fine but if you disagree tell me why.  Tell me how NBC, CBS present any conservative opinions.  Tell me how MSNBC shows anything other than the liberal viewpoint.
You need the conservative viewpoint and yet many people have tried and encouraged me to stop coming to this site.  Well if you all think the same then only one person needs to post and the rest of you can shake your head in agreement.  You don’t want another side...and when you get it you automatically call that person stupid, idiotic, Tell them to stop drinking the Kool Aid and other sophmoric responses.
BTW...now that the Democrats control the Congress and if you remember they told us they would end the war and get us out of IRAQ...can you tell me how we are one day closer to making that a reality?  We have 2 years before the Presidental election and we won’t be any closer to getting out of IRAQ in 2008 than we were in 2007.  IF the Dems do anything in an attempt to get out of IRAQ AND it fails they all know they would be blowing the next election.

Disturbing ideas about Iran from The Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldbriefing/story/0,,20022 32,00.html

Barham Saleh, Iraq’s deputy prime minister, complains that the US and Iran are turning his country into a “zone of conflict and competition” and suggests they take their fight elsewhere.

But as was also the case in the days before Saddam Hussein fell, powerful external forces, ranging from exiled Iranian opposition groups to leading Israeli politicians, appear intent on stoking the fire - and winding up the White House.

“The al-Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards is stepping up terrorism and encouraging sectarian violence in Iraq,” Alireza Jafarzadeh, a US-based Iranian dissident who has been linked to the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MeK) resistance group, told the Washington Times this month. Mr Jafarzadeh is credited with revealing the existence of Iran’s secret nuclear sites in Natanz and Arak in 2002.

“There is a sharp surge in Iran’s sponsorship of terrorism and sectarian violence in the past few months,” Mr Jafarzadeh told a conference organised by the Iran Policy Committee, a Washington lobby group pressing the state department to remove the MeK from its terrorist list.

Israel is also pushing the intelligence case while upping the ante, claiming to have knowledge that Tehran is within a year or two of acquiring basic nuclear weapons-making capability. In a BBC interview last week former prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu compared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s regime to Hitler’s Nazis. Speaking in Davos the deputy prime minister, Shimon Peres, demanded immediate regime change or failing that, military intervention.

The US “push back” against Iran comprises many other elements beyond Iraq. Unconfirmed reports suggest Vice-President Dick Cheney has cut a deal with Saudi Arabia to keep oil production up even as prices fall, to undercut Iran’s main source of foreign currency. Washington is pursuing expanding, non-UN global financial sanctions against Tehran; encouraging and arming a “new alignment” of Sunni Arab Gulf states; and highlighting Iran’s role in “supporting terrorism” in Palestine, where it helps bankroll the Hamas government, and Lebanon, where it backs Hizbullah. The US is also deploying powerful naval forces in the Gulf that are of little help in Iraq but could more easily be used to mount air strikes on Iran.

Almost any one of these developments might produce a casus belli. And when taken together, despite official protestations, they seem to point in only one direction. The Bush administration, an American commentator suggested, is “once again spoiling for a fight”.

Mike claims.....FOX News under reports or doesn’t report at all opposing viewpoints or unclear developments which might cloud their editorial postion.  Their panels are usually balanced 2-1 or 3-1 in favor of the conservative position.

I don’t care much for news today in general because its the same stories over and over repeated every hour and some how in this country a over-turned dump truck on the interstate now becomes BREAKING NEWS.  With that being said I find Fox’s viewpoints generally are as conservative as NBC’s are liberal and if Fox’s panel format is 2-1 or 3-1 in favor of the conservative position I find NBC, ABC and CBS panels 2-1,3-1 in favor of the liberal agenda.

Now, your come back to this post, the usual conservative attack on what I DID NOT say.

So…

Who cares about FOX’s ratings?  Ratings do not constitute fair and balanced reporting.  You asked me who is more fair and balanced...I gave you my answer.
They have minorities and conservatives.  FOX has no minorities and no liberals (other than feeble Alan Colmes who is constantly trumped by Sean Hannity’s hate and wrath for anyone who disagrees with him).
MSNBC does documentaries “Catch a predator” and various ones on murders and jails....even FOX would approve of that.

Bill O’Reilly just compared the radical Christian movement to S & M bars, saying, “there are always those who take things too far.” Hahahaha...people who are into S & M don’t go coast to coast, or across the globe, spreading (forcing) their ideology, nor do they protest funerals of dead soldiers because the military allows homosexuals.

Fox News has one purpose:  to create hate and fear. Hannity and O’Reilly are the main suspects.

I wonder if the Duke rape case had a different cosmetic to it.  If the victim was a white woman and the suspects were black, and the evidence was still as weak...would there still be a call for Nifong to resign and that he be arrested?

Doubt it...Fox News is not fair and balanced.  They love “truthiness”.

John,

Why more people watch Fox News is a mystery to everyone.  By and large, the American people are uninterested in facts.  That is why there is not an outrage regarding the war or the Valerie Plame case. To think that we were duped with intentionally false evidence is preposterous.  But not for us Americans. For Americans, if you let them drive SUVs and keep the Superbowl on network TV they are usually pretty content.
And we really enjoyed being scared...and Fox News is really good at that.

Here is a clue. In the UK, a board determines whether a broadcast newtork meets criteria for fairness and balance. Fox News is not certified to broadcast news over the air.

You believe Faux News to be the most “fair and balanced”?

Well I believe is just as FAIR as any network we have.  Again I will ask..Which network is MORE fair and balanced that FOX?  You and others put down Fox but you never answer my QUESTION>>>Which network is MORE fair and balanced.  Someone did say MSNBC but if that is true why are the ratings soooooooooo far below Foxes?  If its more fair and balanced and liberals and Dems STILL don’t watch it what does that say?

Is it coincidence that Sandy Berger was captioned as “Sandy Burgler”? Is it coincidence that Rep Foley was captioned as “Dem. Foley”? I find it curious that those are but two little examples of a network that either shows college-radio competence or deliberate deception. Which do you think it is?

I guess they don’t hire people like me and you. You know....  People who have never made mistakes.  But since you asked have you ever seen the other networks make mistakes?  Gee I remember a guy named Dan Rather who made up stuff about the President and later had to recant...but I don’t seem to remember him ever apologizing for his mistake.

It’s difficult to add any more “comment” than those preceeding me; except perhaps to say:
The social and political changes occurring in this country in the last six years have altered the future of this planet. The current administration has absolutely no regard for the quality of life on this planet, unless you’re on the top of the food chain. The corporate (lobbists) corruption is on a scale that is non-negotiable with any sane principal. Bush has been re-writing hard fought environmental policy since he was “appointed” to the office in 2000, by the Supreme Court. He has punished the scientific community for “doing their job” and has the audacity to use taxpayer money to promote his perverted agenda(s)!
The world realizes how desperate times are, with Bush in the WH. My advice to fellow citizens and the world at large is- “Duck & Cover!’ How can such a stupid individual be in such a dangerous position of power?  Rest in peace.

Hey, that’s not so bad. So we inherit a toxic incinerated world… but at least we’ll still be number 1.

I just watched an interview on NBC Nightly News with some of the troops in Iraq, and how they view the dissension about what is going on here in America.  From what I could see and hear, they totally miss the point.  It is not that those who oppose the surge in the number of troops, 21,500 of them, to Iraq feel that the troops already there, and those who have sacrificed their lives, limbs, and psychological states have not lived up to expectations.  They have done more than that.  They, however, don’t see that Americans don’t want any more troops sent to the slaughter, which is exactly what is happening in Iraq.  It is because we care about their precious lives, that so many Americans, I believe, and I can only speak for myself, don’t want any more troops being sacrificed.  I see no reason to “trust” any of the Iraqis.  They are not dependable, and in fact, are, in many cases, deadly to our own troops, as well as to their own Iraqi countrymen.  I don’t want to see any more loss of life.  I care about each and every American who is doing his/her utmost over there, but, nothing is either predictable, stable, and there is no reason for them to continuing losing their lives.

If we pull out now: Dems are to blame.
If we stay: Dems are to blame.
If we stay and surge: Dems are to blame
If we get out slowly:Dems are to blame
If we get out too quickly: Dems are to blame
If we leave after loosing: Dems are to blame
If we cut off funds: Dems are to blame

this is very child like in that you think others are picking on you so you decide to just shirk ALL responsibilites.  I will say “Hail Mary and Joseph” if we pull out.
If we stay I will blame Republicans and Dems.
If we stay and surge I will blame Reps.and Dems.
If we get out slowly I will blame Reps and Dems
If we get out too quickly I will be happy and thank Reps. and Dems.
If we leave after Losing I will say we couldn’t win anyway so the Reps. are to blame for getting us in.
If we cut of funds it will be because the Dems voted on it passed and Bush had to get us out so I will give you the credit.

Bob S,

What agenda-laden planet are you from?  As if we didn’t know.

Even CNN’s polls indicated that CNN watchers (overwhelmingly liberal to begin with) were either impressed or somewhat impressed by his speech the other night.  Adding those two categories together, as I recall, resulted in something like a 64% positive reaction--and that was from CNN watchers. All of this, of course, was much to the chagrin of CNN, Truthdig, Robert S, and the majority of you readers, I’m sure.  So much so, that CNN abondened its past practice of adding those two categories together before reporting favorability and used for the headlines only the percent associated with impressed (you had to read the fine print to learn that when somewhat impressed were added, nearly 2/3 were on board).  But, that’s to be expected. We’re talking about CNN.  As for Truthdig’s take, consider the source--Robert S.  What more need be said?  A true objective commentator, right?

W did quite well for himself, wouldn’t you objective Truthdig responders say?

Our Mercenaries in Iraq

“As president Bush took the podium to deliver his state of the Union address Tuesday, there were five American families receiving news that has become all too common: Their loved ones had been killed in Iraq. But in this case, the slain were neither “civilians,” as the news reports proclaimed, nor were they U.S. soldiers. They were highly trained mercenaries deployed to Iraq by secretive private military company based in North Carolina - Blackwater USA.”

All he believes are his eyes
And his eyes, they just tell him lies.

But there’s a woman on my block,

She say who gonna take away his license to kill?

Now he worships at an altar of a stagnant pool
And when he sees his reflection, he’s fulfilled.
Oh, man is opposed to fair play,
He wants it all and he wants it his way.

Man thinks ‘cause he rules the earth he can do with it as he please
And if things don’t change soon, he will.

Now, they take him and they teach him and they groom him for life
And they set him on a path where he’s bound to get ill,
Then they bury him with stars,
Sell his body like they do used cars.

Actually, I find myself in agreement with the basic idea of John’s comments (Comment #49736 by John).  Get out of Iraq right away.  Today if possible.  Protect our soldiers during the evacuations and leave.  Then through political process and meetings with Syria, Iran, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia determine how we can best help to rebuild what we have destroyed once the new leadership of Iraq is decided.  Where I disagree with John is that, yes, it matters very much that we went in there under total bullshit false pretenses, Iraq was not a threat to us then and is now, we’ve turned the entire world against us, many thousands of people are dead, and all for what?  So some delusional wanna be Hoppalong Cassady can convince himself that he is really a Texan and not some spoiled rich punk who was born with a silver spoon up his ass!

Yes, Bush needs to be impeached but so many in Congress are complicit in the Middle East fiasco that won’t happen. Better to focus on stopping Bush on Iran and on the acts of war against Iran going on now. While Congress and the media focus on Iraq, they are meekly being led into another far more serious quagmire and international disaster.

John, again you seem to be such an ignorant ass you can not see the forest for the trees.

It is not a WAR.  This is a bush invasion. Or if you have to call it a war it is bush’s war.  This is a skirmish gone bad. Bush used 911 as an excuse to declare war because he lacked the ability to govern unless he was a “war president” A president in a time of war can justify anything, and that is precisely what bush has done.

Since bush in not a leader, he is not a competent business man, he is not a diplomat or strategist, and he needs a conflict so he can declare war so he can do what ever he wants.

Even now when dems and republicans and 65% of the country think he is wrong in his decision, he is marching forwards telling everyone who does not support him to bugger off.

After war has been declared bush finally had some clout to do what he wants because everything he did was “natl. Security, or to protect the people.... Bush, kidnapped the 911 situation and to this day uses it to sell is failed policies.

The bottom line is 911 was the best thing that ever happened to bush and the worst thing that e
