Joe Conason: Destroying Freedom to Save AmericaPosted on Dec 20, 2006By Joe Conason The flimsy philosophizing of Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the House and aspiring presidential candidate, isn’t designed to bear any great weight. For many years, he has been willing to say anything that would win him the public attention and political power he still craves. Yet in the mainstream media and among Republicans, his intellectual pretensions are often taken seriously—and when he promotes authoritarian “solutions” to national problems, that must be taken seriously, too. His latest insight is that America can survive only if we impose severe curbs on freedom of speech. At a recent event in New Hampshire—where he shows up often these days—Gingrich explained why he believes that the First Amendment must be reconsidered in these trying times. He chose to deliver these remarks at an annual dinner held in memory of the late publisher of the Manchester Union-Leader, honoring individuals who stand up for free speech. We confront an existential threat, he said, “that will inevitably lead us to want to know what is said in every suspect place in the country, that will lead us to learn how to close down every website that is dangerous, and it will lead us to a very severe approach to people who advocate the killing of Americans and advocate the use of nuclear or biological weapons.” He went on to advocate measures that “use every technology we can find to break up [the terrorists’] capacity to use the Internet, to break up their capacity to use free speech, and to go after people who want to kill us, to stop them from recruiting people before they get to reach out and convince young people to destroy their lives while destroying us.” Such vague prescriptions sound sensible enough. Certainly no sane person wants terrorists using the Internet, and nobody wants them recruiting young suicide bombers on the Internet, either. The problem is in the details. Exactly how the former speaker would deter the enemies of freedom from using free speech was anything but clear. About a week after his New Hampshire speech, he expanded on his remarks in an article for the ultraconservative Union-Leader newspaper. “The fact is that not all speech is permitted under the Constitution,” he wrote. He noted the ominous remarks of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the outreach by Hezbollah to sympathizers in Latin America, and the stated determination of Islamist militants to “use the Internet for the sake of jihad.” He suggested that the government be empowered to shut down websites that recruit suicide bombers and urged “an expeditious review of current domestic law to see what changes can be made within the protections of the First Amendment to ensure that free speech protection claims are not used to protect the advocacy of terrorism, violent conduct or the killing of innocents.” That’s only a sample of the many big mouthfuls of rhetoric emanating from Mr. Gingrich on this topic, but you get the idea. When he appeared on “Meet the Press” Dec. 17, host Tim Russert asked him how his fantasy would work. Who would define such murky offenses as “advocacy of terrorism” or “violent conduct”? Gingrich seemed to be annoyed by the question. His answer was not only unimpressive but also unintentionally funny. “You close down any website that is jihadist,” he said. “But who makes that judgment?” insisted Russert. “Look, I—you can appoint three federal judges if you want to and say, ‘Review this stuff and tell us which ones to close down.’ I would just like to have them be federal judges who’ve served in combat,” replied Gingrich. Considering the source, that was a remarkably weird response. A panel of three judges who’ve served in combat? As a qualification for making crucial decisions about combating terrorists, combat service would surely eliminate Gingrich—a certified chicken hawk who loves war but successfully avoided the Vietnam draft—from running for president. Logic aside, he has offered at least one example of how he would apply his new set of speech standards. He believes that the six Muslim scholars who were removed from a plane in Minneapolis last month for such suspicious behavior as praying in the airport “should have been arrested and prosecuted for pretending to be terrorists.” That ridiculous assertion could only have thrilled the leaders of Al Qaeda. Nothing they can ever put on a website or videotape will be nearly as effective in encouraging young Muslims to hate America and reject freedom as Gingrich’s cloddish demagogy. Would, could Newt actually be elected president?
Maybe the more alarming fact is that there are people out there who support and listen to this guy! He has no shortage of speaking engagements, and the press has no problem following him around, dutifully reporting his “words of wisdom” as though they actually had value.
That’s the scary thing! If Newt’s opinions are recognized as anything but hot air from a blowhard ... somebody is listening!
One day on c-span, this man revealed he lay awake nights dreaming (OK, I know but that’s what he said) of the day when we (the government)
could go into the homes of “bad” parents and remove their children and place them in the homes of “Good Christian parents” to be brought up properly. That’s how he views the future.
And people support this guy!
So please don’t relax, believing since the so-called neo-cons seem to be losing their hold on things, we can place our faith and trust and future in the hands of “conservative” leadership.
I’m sure there are some (well maybe one or two) conservative politicians who still hold to true conservative principles, but Newt aint one of them. Like Mormon Mitt, Surge McCain, Hero Guiliani, and just about any other “conservative” who covets the White House, their positions come down to pretty much the same thing ...
Rich good.
Poor bad.
Christian good.
Non Christian bad.
War good.
Peace bad.
Individual rights good, as long as THEY decide what our rights are.
Individual rights bad, if we are allowed to think for ourselves.
Oh, and 9/11 justifies any and all Constitutional abuse!
The challenge is how to penetrate the wall of deception that’s been built around the minds and wills of the conservative population in general. The challege is to un-mask the so-called conservative leaders who want to own, control and use them.

While the Nazi label is often mis-applied and over-applied to mere lunatic conservatives, I think that Newt is now worthy of the “Krypto-Nazi” appellation that Gore Vidal used to toss around.
A need for three federal judges who’ve served in combat would mean that we would have to continually attack small, defenseless countries, in order to properly “train” our federal justices. Halliburton would second that proposal in a nanosecond.

Is it too late to teach everyone love? Maybe so. I would think if people could live through love, they would have learned it by now. So the war is on. Has it always been this way? I don’t know I am just waking up. But i don’t think I will sleep again

As revolution grows near: The question we should ask ourselves is: What would I sacrifice ?? So that my family and way of life will survive. Will I sit still while a little brown man with a “box cutter” threatens me, or will I give up all that is called america; so that a fat white man can take away all that is “america” so that I can be “free” from the threat” I suppose my second question is “ what is really the threat ?? We were all sworn to defend the constition, nobody relieved us of that responsiblity

“The ease with which they have been able to advance their agenda so far, has made them even stronger in their belief that we deserve what they are doing to us. Why go abroad for a docile, hungry, cheap labor force when you can create one at home? Along with his conversion to evangelical Christianity, this tough talk about jihadists will help Gingrich shore up his political base for a run at the Presidency in 2008. While he is trying to gain votes from dumb NASCAR fans and even dumber evangelical Christians, he is seeking money from the conservative business sector by positioning himself as a true pro-business tax-cutting, budget-balancing, free market conservative.

Lets be clear on a couple of facts...OK, maybe their reasoned hypotheses, but clear to me nonetheless. These out of touch Republicans only recently discovered the power of the internet and blogosphere to subvert and undermine their cause, propaganda and efforts to curb the dissemination of information. Howard Dean’s campaign in ‘04 could reasonably be cited as the their wake-up call and the recent election punched them in the mouth and bloodied them. Despite their best efforts, people found a way to share information with one another and it is a unexpected wrench in the works in their diabolical sceme. See...that’s the beauty of the “War on Terror”! Everything can be justified! In War time certain sacrifices have to be made. Certain freedoms must be curtailed. Who exactly is the enemy? We can’t know. They’re everywhere, yet nowhere. Are they here in the United States? Yes. Are they abroad? Yes. Are they your brother? Could be. Can the war be won? Someday. How? Give us your freedom. For how long? Till victory in the war is won. What does victory mean? No one will attack you ever again. How can you gaurentee that? Because we will have total control.

Newt Gingrich is not even worth listening to unless yoh are a racist bigot. These guys want to change the constitution to use on minorities and other non white Americans all done under the guise of protecting us from terrorists. My question is whose going to protect us from people like Newt? Not Thomas.Alito.Scalia.Roberts or Kennedy. Not the Kangeroo court they call military tribunals. The constitution is now called the patriot act. Bush and Newt and folks like them won’t stop until our rights rights rival the ones we are fighting the Islamo fascists.

On December 23, 2006 the Federal Reserve Bank will celebrate its 93rd birthday. On this date of 1913 our Congress enacted the Federal Reserve Act. This is a direct violation of the Old U.S.Constitution Article 1 Sec:8 and Bill of Rights and an act of treason by these Congress people.
Newt is most likely with the same mind set of the NewStates of America Constitution. You see our tax dollars ($25Million) paid for a proposed Constitutional model by the Center for Democratic Studies of Santa Barbara, California.
Article 1, Section 1: Freedom of expression, of communication, of movement, of assembly, or of petition shall not be abridged EXCEPT in declared emergency.

The thing about the Gingrich type thinking people we should take note of is that they are surprised there hasn’t been more resistance to their policies, that it has been so easy to disenfranchise the American public. They expected we’d be more up in arms about the draining away of our money and our rights. They know that when the complacent, ignorant, fat, clueless sleeping masses do finally wake up to what has been done, one of the main organizational tools will be the internet, and they well know the importance of having their hands around it’s throat so they can identify and squash the rebellion they already are surprised hasn’t come. The ease with which they have been able to advance their agenda so far, has made them even stronger in their belief that we deserve what they are doing to us. Why go abroad for a docile, hungry, cheap labor force when you can create one at home? Once they get the internet in the hands of the telecomunications giants with all the surveilance and spigot monitoring controls in place, they believe they’ll be in the home stretch.

Isn’t interesting that conservative politicians only want to hear their OWN point of view—- Bush, similarly dismisses anyone who doesn’t go along with the party line—-stay the course.
Political ideology formed by corporate demands doesn’t allow for much freedom, in fact, the only sounds these politicians can tolerate are the echoes from their own voice.

Having come from a country where freedoms are ‘curtailed’, specifically speech, I can tell you that Gingrich is right! That is if you see him as our dictator, ruler, Fuhrer, etc.
This is how it begins folks. One small suggestion at a time, little by little. Trying to convince of a ‘perceived’ problem, and guide you in their direction. As in 43177 “but what would your solution be?” trying to put you on the defensive. We have a solution bud..its called the Constitution, and its Bill of RIGHTS! Get it...rights!!! Without that we might as well become China and censure the newspapers, the NET, book brunings...!
On January 27, 1838, Lincoln said: “Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never!”…….”At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”
I submit that this statement applies today specifically to the divisiveness manufactured by our current ‘I am a uniter not a divider’ president, and by Nazis like Newt.

Poor Newt. Relegated to descend the back stairs of Air Force I, he’s never recovered. In retaliation he shuts down the government only to end up shut down himself. Sort of reminds one of those fireworks that shoot, brilliant for a nano-second only to end up on the ground in an ash heap.
He’s always had trouble with free speech - said of public broadcasting, “I’ll bury it.”
The more Repubs who jump on his decrepit bandwagon, the better it is for Dems because Newt is old news. Americans like new stuff - just try to find a Mall parking place this Saturday.

Thank you Joe Conason for exposing the dangerous Nazi and Fascist thinking of this evil Newt Gingrich.
Like G. Bush, N. Gingrich is another example of what is wrong with America. They are both a big part of the problem. What worries me most about my adopted homeland is that rational and thoughtful people like you Joe Canason have to spend much time and energy exposing the irrationality and evil of those politicians that stand more chance than others to lead this country.
In his irrational push to validate his evil program, Gingrich lost sight of basic common sense. For if the terrorists and enemies of America are stupidly using the Internet to recruit, as he falsely claims, then that should be welcomed news, for it makes the chances of detecting them even easier.
Having said this, however, I would agree to a further amendment to the First Amendment that makes people like Gingrich enemies of freedom and democracy, who should be hanged in public squares without a trial; for their evil words are enough evidence against them.

The funny thing is if you talk about taking away guns those on the right are ready to take up arms to fight it yet they fail to understand that those on the left feel just as deeply about the first ammen. Maybe we should make tinkering with the constitution illegal and both sides would walk away from it with something as it is taking away either of these rights is a recipe for social unrest and possibly revolt with a VERY unpopular president, senate, judiciary and media. I just think this would make our country MORE insecure as a percentage of the population formed an insurgency in their idea of patriotisim. I do not believe in taking away ANY of the rights the people have been given.

In response to 43177:
One of my many problems with even the most specific limitations on free speech (i.e. “Islamists") is that the our Revolutionary history aside, there has been and will always be some vague buzzword boogie man: Communists (we trade with all of those countries); socialists (we now have one in our federal government); Unions; Hippies; Immigrants; Civil Rights Activists; Anarchists; Feminists… etc… And if one by one we had removed the ability to even speak about all of those “troubling” trials of the moment, our language would be impoverished, even crippled, not to mention atrophying our imaginations which were forced to work so hard to rise up and negotiate each of those tumultuous issues for the better of our society.

I agree, ordinarily I would dismiss anything that Newt has to say. As a former member of our political ruling class and primary author of the “Contract on America” his contempt for the average American citizen is a matter of record.
Report thisThe problem is that I see Newt as the canary in the coal mine. His utterances do reflect what our current government thinks the “rights” of an American citizen should be, the Constitution be damned. We can look for no help from the Democrats. Our two party system has evolved into a combined one party rule. They play good cop, bad cop on every issue with the American public as the perpetrator of the crime.
Having the ability to snuff out any form left of dissent is the next logical step to a complete dictatorship. “Authoritarian” is just another word for “dictator”.

And these questions should be asked by any sane American who values our freedoms, yet who understands that there are inherent weaknesses in our constitution that WILL be exploited by Islamists. I read with great skeptisism any article which calls the Manchester Union Leader of today “Ultra Conservative” Actually the Union Leader is a vastly different paper from the days when William Loeb (A true proponant of FREE SPEECH) ran and owned the paper. I remember front page editorials where he used free expression to hawk his papers. He called Henry Kissenger a “Kike” and the Senator from neighboring Maine “Moscow Muskie”. Targets additionally included included Dwight Eisenhower ("that stinking hypocrite"), and John Kennedy ("the No. 1 liar in the U.S.A.") BUT Mr. Loeb would also print ANY letter sent to the paper even those critical of him and his views. If you were critical enough (and used civil language) you might find your letter next to an editorial reply on the front page.
That Manchester Union Leader died with Mr. Loeb (who was Teddy Roosevelt’s god son)
The New Manchester Union Leader is a dying daily like most newsprint media in these United States. hardly “ultra” anything, more a second-rate print version of Fox News.
During my time in New Hampshire I had correspondence with Mr. Loeb on many subjects away from politics. I found him to be an excellent entertainer, and a good barometer of the mood in New Hampshire.
William Loeb distrusted big government, and hated (imposed from above) restrictions on a man’s life activities… He would have disliked Gingrich, but Newt wouldn’t have known it until he was back in Georgis and someone sent him a Union Leader Front page editorial entitled Newt the blowhard!
