Andy Borowitz: Kerry Reveals 2004 Campaign Was Botched Joke

By Andy Borowitz

Speaking to an audience of troops in Iraq today, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) raised eyebrows by revealing for the first time that his 2004 campaign for the U.S. presidency was “a botched joke.”

“My stiff delivery, my wooden, robot-like hand gestures, were all an attempt on my part to be hilarious,” Sen. Kerry told the troops. “In retrospect, I guess you had to be there.”

For Mr. Kerry, a politician whose demeanor ranges from “dour” to “very dour,” the news that his entire campaign was a botched joke came as a startling revelation.

But despite the fact that his presidential campaign failed to garner the kind of belly laughs he was aiming for, Sen. Kerry told the troops that he planned to skip the 2008 race to focus full time on what he called “my first love, comedy.”

Buddy Schlantz, a veteran talent agent and observer of the show business scene, said that Mr. Kerry’s decision to focus on comedy might be “a good career move,” and suggested that the senator might find some stage time at the Laugh Factory, where “Seinfeld” alumnus Michael Richards memorably performed last month: “I hear they have a slot open.”

But in a sign that he still has a long way to go as a comedian, Mr. Kerry’s final joke to the troops played to cricket-like silence.

“Do you know what happens to comedians who botch a joke?” Mr. Kerry said. “They get stuck in Iraq!”

Elsewhere, the world’s oldest person died at age 116, while the world’s second-oldest person is starring in “Rocky Balboa.”

That Truthdig has allowed Andy BlandandBoringWits to post “humor” columns here is the real Botched Joke.

How about a comedian with real chops, say Jon Stewart, Colbert, someone, ANYONE else?

Then again, there are people who think Duane Cook is a comedian (rather than a ... oh, forget it), so I guess there is no accounting for taste.

Kerry’s campaign was not a botched joke… it was a joke.

I am no lefty like the rest of you on this board. I didn’t vote for Bush, but Kerrey almost forced me to with his stupid ranting.

life is a comedy to those who think, a tragedy to those who feel. Kerry’s campaign at its worst was better than Bush’s at his best—-unless you don’t think character, honesty and a proven record of serving one’s country matter. People who laughed at Kerry have their reward in the blood of 3000 dead Americans and countless thousands of Iraqis.

Kerry could have been a contender, if he sputtered his humor while actually wearing a pair of colorful flip flops—you knew Kerry’s comedic performance was in trouble, when Gore’s campaign, seemed enormously charismatic.

Actually—-do you know what happens to comedians who botch jokes—-they don’t become president—-well, maybe they do, but the Supreme Court must appoint them.

Not funny.  Hunter Thompson would eat you for breakfast for this one that is based ENTIRELY in RW spin and media hype - real comedy needs a basis in truth.

Michael O’Donoghue and Hunter Thompson will not welcome you when your time on earth is up, Mr. Borowitz.
