Rep. Kucinich: America Needs Iraq War Hearings

Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio waves after speaking to delegates during the Democratic National Convention at the FleetCenter in Boston, Wednesday, July 28, 2004.

By Joshua Scheer

In an original Truthdig interview, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), the potential next chair of the Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats, and International Relations, calls for congressional hearings into how and why America invaded Iraq, and demands “accountability” for those who led America into a “war based on lies.”

(Disclosure: Interviewer Scheer worked as an entry-level staffer on Kucinich’s state Senate campaign, and was later a summer associate in his congressional office.)

TRUTHDIG: Do you have a plan that could get us out of Iraq?

KUCINICH: I’ve had a plan to get us out of Iraq from the minute we got there. I’ve had it on my website for three years—elements of which are still very viable. It calls for the U.S. to give up its control of the oil assets to move towards soliciting U.N. involvement.

TRUTHDIG: Do you think the neocons are done, or do they have life left in them yet?

KUCINICH: I think they’re going to have to answer for the direction that they took this country. I don’t think this election, in and of itself, ends the questions about those who led us into a war based on lies. As a matter of fact, the only hope they have is to do a reversal and lead the way out of Iraq. Because even at this moment a number of their top adherents are continuing to insist on an active U.S. presence in Iraq.

Even now there are people who were urging President Bush to go to war who are staying that wrongful course. And people have to be held accountable. You can’t lead this country into a war that has lost thousands of U.S. troops and perhaps hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis, [and that has] cost the American taxpayers $400 billion—and maybe up to $2 trillion—and leave it with some kind of blithe apology. There has to be accountability. When the people elected Democrats, they also voted for accountability.

The American people are relying on us—not just to take a new direction, which I believe is out of Iraq, but they’re insisting on accountability for those who led us wrongly into Iraq.

TRUTHDIG: Are you planning investigations?

KUCINICH: It’s imperative for there to be accountability. How that accountability is enforced is going to be the subject of a lot of debate. But that there should be accountability is absolutely imperative.

TRUTHDIG: [Rep. Nancy] Pelosi said she was going to go across the aisle and work with a lot of the Republicans who voted for the war....

KUCINICH: This isn’t about whether or not someone voted for the war as a member of Congress. Members of Congress have to be free to be able to choose again based on new information. So, it’s OK if somebody was once for the war, and they looked at it again—that’s OK. The problem is the attempt to cover up what was obviously a war based on lies. That’s the problem.

TRUTHDIG: So how are you going to expose that coverup?

KUCINICH: We need to have hearings on Iraq again. We need to go over again why we went there. We need to review the statements and all the errors that were made, and from that we bring the country together to take a new direction. It’s all fact-based. And then we start to heal our nation. But we cannot heal America if we continue with policies that are based on lies. We’ll never be able to bring closure to this Iraq matter unless we tell the truth about what happened. So America needs a new approach of truth and reconciliation. This isn’t a Democratic or Republican matter. This is a matter that relates to the conscience of this country. This is a matter of the heart—the heart of democracy itself. This is a matter of whether we’re going to a sober reflection about the events that have transpired since 9/11, with respect to Iraq. And until we do this, we will be trapped not only physically in Iraq, we’ll be trapped emotionally and spiritually in Iraq. We may never get out of Iraq if we don’t tell the truth.

There shouldn’t be any partisan direction on this. We should all be together. America wants a new direction in Iraq; it stated it loud and clear. It wants a Congress that’s going to question the president, not a rubber-stamp Congress. This is a time to tell the truth and to heal our nation. And the time for Congress to function as a co-equal branch of government and for the government to function as it was intended to function.

We must never forget that the people have asked for a new direction, and now it’s up to us to help them achieve that.

TRUTHDIG: So you’re calling for hearings right now?

KUCINICH: We definitely should have hearings, but the actual decision about whether or not to convene them will be up to the Democratic leadership.

TRUTHDIG: What do you make of Bush’s getting rid of Rumsfeld?

KUCINICH: Listen, Rumsfeld may no longer be secretary of defense, but he made decisions based on lies that took people to their deaths. He has to be held accountable—secretary or not. And the rest of the people who were involved with the decision-making process have to be held accountable.

TRUTHDIG: You’re OK with the social conservatives coming to the [Democratic] Party?

KUCINICH: The Democratic Party is a big tent. And we have to remain a big tent.

TRUTHDIG: And what about the people who basically only ran on the issue of being antiwar?

KUCINICH: Whether people specifically were elected in opposition to the war is almost beside the point. The American people voted in a new Congress because of the war. We have to recognize that. We have to recognize that the American people demand a new direction. So then the question is going to be: How do we, as Democrats, keep faith with the people, in assuring that there is accountability? That’s what the people want. They want to make sure that all these people that brought us into war have to answer for their decisions. And so far, you know what? They haven’t had to answer. We’re going to have to go back over the territory: How did we get into Iraq? You cannot talk about an exit plan unless you know how you got in. And once people understand very clearly how we got in, then it becomes more imperative to get out.

Should there be an Investigation?? Absolutely. However As an American speaking out to other Americans, We should have saw this Absolute CRIME coming when there was a “Voting Error” During the presidential 2000 votes in the state of Florida? That was the first clue and I can not believe that we allowed this to happen. Americans we need to pay special close attention to these people that are running for president. what are their motives, Are they a former “anything” in the Business world??? I don’t want to come off as Questioning us as a nation But we need more info on the candidates background and don’t simply rely on the media! The Tren are always that We Americans are the last ones to know The Lies and by then its to late and nobody want to mess with it.... The Bush admin in my first Admendment God given Right should be Investigated and sit back and watch the Senators and House of Rep Show us “The world most intellectual crime ever in the History of mankind” unfold.............

It is important to determine the real reason we are in Iraq today. And that will require an investigation. War crimes, torture, and perpetual lying by the Bush Administration should be sufficient grounds for an impeachment. But an investiagation into how we got into Iraq is a good place to start.

Change he world anyone?  Just so happens that it’s now doable.  How?  We see to it that Congress passes the Kucinich bill that cuts off all funding for the Iraq War.  Said move begets TROOPS OUT NOW, which leads to the impeachment of George Bush plus his subsequent trial at the International Court of Criminal Justice on the charge of crimes against humanity.  And after that?  Empire collapses.  And then?  It’ll be up to us.

If we cringe at the prospect of investigations and another impeachment process, we will have another President at another time, that follows the blue print left behind by Bush Chaney and Rove with the backing of a rubber stamp congress.

The question is, can America afford a second coming of another satanic administraion that attacks soveriegn nations, pillages and kills for the ultimate prize of enslaving nations for thier natural resources?

Our president is about to take a called third strike.  The first strike against him will be the passage of the Kucinich bill that cuts off all funding for the Iraq war.  The second strike is his impeachment, towards which the Congressional hearings on the Iraq war will prove most beneficial.  The third strike, of course, is his trial at the International Court of Criminal Justice - “Members of the jury, on the charge of crimes against humanity, what is your verdict?” “Guilty as charged, your honor.”

Investigations? Gee, what a great idea.

While your at it would you also “investigate” 9/11 one more time.

Maybe you can tell us how WTC Building #7 fell?

Just that. You answer that one question and let’s see where it leads.

Than know this - everything that’s happened since was in reaction to 9/11.

Now who benefited?

Rep. Kucinich makes many good points in his consideration for accountability about getting into the Iraqi war.  They’re all right.  Each and every person who swore to abide by our constitution when elected to serve Americans who had a part in the deceit to involve our country in an illegal, grossly immoral war should and must be called to answer.  A democracy cannot simply allow them to go riding off into the sunset, scott free of this killing responsibility.

More than all Rep. Kucinich covered is the vitally important aspect of setting the example that America, we the people, will not tolerate a repeat performance by any person aspiring to become president of our country or by any person who occupies the Oval Office.  Straight ftrom the top, down the chain of command, all must be called to answer and, as any common criminal, pay the ultimate cost.

Moreover, it is a must, so that our descendants know that we have not abandoned them to a government that has committed these atrocities; that we have paved the way to once again, have those we’ve elected do the will of the people as set out in our constitution.

Just the crimes we all know of would, if answered, place Bush, Cheyney, Rumsfeld and others behind bars for the rest of their lives.  We do not need to know of the crimes as yet hidden.  The horrors of Iraq; the conspiracy to validate Bush’s invasion, is enough for American’s to bear.

The very idea of President Clinton being impeached for a blow-job [pardon the language, it could be worse], in comparrison to the crimes against humanity planned and carried out by Bush, Inc. is enough to make Satan cringe.  Let’s get on with it.

Bush’s statements, yesterday concerning what he had learned from the Vietnam war left me spluttering and thinking about the nature of ‘Folly’.. First, I would like to recommend a great book by
the great American historian Barbara Tuchman, ‘The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam’. In this book Tuchman sets out what constitutes true Folly as committed by a nation, using the fall of Troy in the Homer’s Iliad as example. She saw Folly as having four components:
1) The act must be one of choice , something not closely bound to the national interest. In her first example, the Trojans had no pressing need to bring that big wooden horse inside the gates of the city.
2) The nation must have been clearly warned against this action.
In the example, Cassandra’s warning, ”Beware of Greeks bearing gifts” falls on deaf ears.
3) The act must be done without thought of any of it’s consequences. In the example, ‘Why would you want a big Greek horse inside the walls of your city, in the first place”?
4) Having committed the act, a nation must do something to make the possible negative consequences much worse. In the example, after bringing the Trojan horse inside the gates the army of Troy sets out to get dead drunk.

In her book Tuchman sets out about half a dozen historical examples of true national ‘Folly’ ending with Vietnam. There is no clearer textbook example Folly in recent history than Iraq. That it was a war of choice and that all warnings against it were ignored is obvious, as is the lack of any consideration of consequences .The disbanding of the Iraqi army and ‘debaathification of the civil government are strong contenders for point #4 but there are of course others….

The Greeks had a word for the real lesson of all this, ‘Hubris’.  Arrogant leaders never learn from their mistakes and nations that willfully believe they will, whether in Nixon’s ‘Secret Plan for Peace in Vietnam’, or Bush’s ‘New Course in Iraq’ are bound for tragedy.

WASHINGTON—A Senate Democrat who will chair its Judiciary Committee next year asked the Justice Department to release newly acknowledged documents setting U.S. policy on how suspects in the war on terrorism are detained and interrogated.

“The American people deserve to have detailed and accurate information about the role of the Bush administration in developing the interrogation policies and practices that have engendered such deep criticism and concern at home and around the world,” Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., wrote Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Leahy demanded two documents whose existence the CIA recently acknowledged in response to a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union.

“If President Bush and the Justice Department authorized the CIA to torture its prisoners, the public has a right to know,” said Jameel Jaffer, an ACLU attorney involved in the case.

The first document is a directive Bush signed giving the CIA authority to set up detention facilities outside the U.S. and outlining interrogation methods that may be used against detainees.

The second is a 2002 memo from the Justice Department’s office of Legal Counsel to the CIA General Counsel regarding interrogation methods that the spy agency may use against top al Qaida members.

Leahy asked Gonzales to produce any revisions and analyses of those and other memos. He also requested agency documents that interpret the scope of interrogation practices permitted and prohibited by the detainee Treatment Act or the Military Commissions Act.

A Justice Department spokesman had no immediate comment

Nico,

I like the expression of “The Great Cleansing”.  We need one yet I have doubts that it is going to occur anytime soon.  The majority of our Represenatives don’t have the stomache for it.  They might get caught up in some vicious battles within their little club.  Others might use their corporate friends to assasinate their character.  The Corporate leaders can get pretty dirty.

It is much easier for them to send the fools who believe that our government represents virtuous ideals to a Combat Zone.  Fools and their lives will soon part while greed is the staple in D.C.

The crowd in Washington is gathering now.  A few new faces, but the dance remains the same.  Rhetoric here and rhetoric there no change here and no change their, but the money still flows in D.C.

Thats the way the Corporate Sponsors of our Represenatives like it.  They always get what they want.

We need TRUTH, but we are not going to get it without a fight.  The Vampires or War profiteers like Cheney who’s stock holding in Haliburton went up 3000% in 2005 are not afraid to shoot people.  He has a whole military complex to defend him.

The two things that appear in almost every article on Iraq and the Bush regime are “The repubicans are done,” and “No impeachment.”
Do not underestimate this regime because Bush and friends believe they are above the law, have covered their tracks, and put it in the minds of some mindless people to ‘play nice.’ They want you to think only vindictive democrats who want to get even, would start hearings on impeachment for no other reason than pay back.
Bush was in office only a few months when he talked about sending troops to Columbia to stop the drug business. At the time I wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper saying: Bush is looking for a war and at this time it appeared it would be against Columbia. I was wrong about the country, right about Bush wanting and finding a war.
I want to know why our military personel have died, or returned damaged by a war that Bush wanted. Why ‘no bid’ contracts, why ‘all the waste by contractors who did virtually nothing over there and yet got paid.’ Torture on prisoners, spying on Americans, etc, etc.
Bush should go on trial first, Cheney and Rumsfeld and a list of others should follow.
Let’s not play nice, let’s get the truth, “for the truth shall set we, the citizens free, and hopefully put the rest behind bars.”
The list goes on and on. Bush should

ABSOLUTELY!  Hunt them all down.

We must discover all that we can in order to understand what has taken place so that hopefully it can be avoided in the future.

The people of this country are just now beginning to realize how many crimes have been committed by the likes of individuals in the CIA, FBI, NSA, FAA, NORAD, American Airlines, United Airlines, FEEMA, NIST, NTSB, the US Military, the Pentagon, the White House, the House and the Senate, and any number of other governmental organizations and agencies along with their civilian operations.

These anonymous traitors have emboldened our sick demented President and supported his murderous treasonous campaigns while shredding the Constitution.  Collectively they engineered and/or allowed 911 to happen and lent whatever assistance they could to get us into Afghanistan and Iraq.  No doubt there is a money trail there as long as the list of lies and deciet.

NOT ONE OF THEM HAS BEEN HELD RESPONSIBLE IN ANY WAY FOR THE MOST SYSTEMIC HENIOUS DERELICTION OF DUTY AND DEPRAVITY THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER SEEN.

As Imus said, Peolsi is a dirtbag.  And I have to agree.  How dare she decide that ‘impeachment is off the table?’

Throw her under the bus Dennis, and all those that would stand in the way of THE GREAT CLEANSING.

The Worst Mayors (1820-1993)
Next, and seventh worst, is Cleveland’s Dennis Kucinich (1977-79). Only thirty-one years old when elected, Cleveland’s “boy” mayor had failings that were not the sins of venality or graft for personal gain, but rather matters of style, temperament, and bad judgment in office. Kucinich earned seventh place the hard way: by his abrasive, intemperate, and confrontational populist political style, which led to a disorderly and chaotic administration. He barely survived a recall vote just ten months into office, then disappeared for five weeks, reportedly recuperating from an ulcer. When he got back into the political fray, his demagogic rhetoric and slash-and-burn political style got him into serious trouble when he stubbornly refused to compromise and led Cleveland into financial default in late 1978—the first major city to default since the Great Depression. That led also to Kucinich’s defeat and exit from executive office. Out of office, he dabbled in a Hollywoodesque spirit world and once believed he had met actress Shirley MacLaine in a previous life, seemingly confirming his critics’ charges that he was a “nut-cake.” After that, he experienced downward mobility, losing races for several other offices and finally ending up with a council seat; but more recently, he climbed back up to a seat in Congress. Bad judgment, demagoguery, and default also spelled political failure in the eyes of twenty-five of our experts, who ranked Dennis, whom the press called “the Menace,” as seventh-worst.

“We may never get out of Iraq if we don’t tell the truth.”
- Rep. Dennis Kucinich

Truth is the issue, and the lack of it is the explanation for what has happened these past six years.

From Saddam Hussein to Social Security, the Republicans have not told the truth on a single issue.

It appears, as predicted, that we have indeed got the government we deserve.

To paraphrase Rep. Kucinich, we will never be free of our own corruption if we don’t tell the truth.

The mission of the Democratic party should be clear by now: Find the truth. Tell the truth to the American people. Lead accordingly.

I agree that hearings need to be held.  It would be great if they could be seen as something other than partisan payback.  If someone leads them that we can trust, such as Kucinich, then maybe it would be best if they were not open to the press.

It could be announced that this is a fact finding investigation with no partisan agenda.  In keeping with this, the hearings will be closed to the press, and that its testimony and findings will be announced to the Congress and the press when they are complete.

This would allow Congress to get on with its business while the investigations go forward.

While I don’t subscribe to revenge or “payback” in any form, I will believe with my last breath that few institutions are more important than “justice being served.”

In this light, let us not forget the many unanswered questions of 9-ll such as no response after the North Tower was attacked (or for that matter, the lack of response when THAT plane changed course).

And let us not forget the arrogance demonstrated during Katrina of Bush playing “air guitar” and rushing to photo ops, Cheney relaxing and hunting in Wyoming and Condelezza shopping for shoes “while Rome burned.”

Having done a little homework, I have acquired a greater respect for Ms. Pelosi—her background and history are impressive.  But I agree with John C (11/10) that it would not be a “waste of time” to pursue this president for his criminal acts against the state and against humanity.  If we can’t demand that our Constitution be upheld, then we need to teach our children well that men like Patrick Henry, Paul Revere and James Madison lived and died in vain.  If we don’t have the self-respect to hold ourselves accountable as a nation for crimes done in our name, then how can we demand respect from any other nation or people?
If we cannot separate right from wrong then it is a waste of time to try to explain ourselves to our children, to demonstrate that actions have consequences and we can just throw self-discipline out the window.
If Ms. Pelosi cannot draw the line in the sand for this president, then pray tell what crimes are we to sanction for future presidents?
It is reprehensible for the new House leadership to wink at the criminal acts of this president and his coterie.
It can only be hoped that a future tribunal will bring the guilty to justice.  If not, then we indeed contemplate a miserable future.  What better way to redeem our nation than to take responsibility and to do it on the world stage so that the world can see we are a worthy people.
There may come a day when the American people have justice for the insults and egregious assaults on their integrity.  If that time comes, then our leaders will also have to stand trial for their withdrawal from and shunning of reality.
The crimes of the administration are too many to enumerate. We expected things from our Democrats.  We expected that they not wink at atrocities, at arrogance, at blatant evil.  We will hold our leaders to account – both Democrat and Republican.  They must oversee.  They must back their words with acts.
And as much as we admire and respect John Murtha, his proposal is only a furtherance of the Bush Doctrine.  He wants to bring the troops home, but he wants to proceed with bombing Iraq into a Cromagnon state.  That is unacceptable.  We are not cavemen; we should not behave as cavemen.
G. Gordon Liddy, Ollie North, Chuck Colson,Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle,GHW Bush, GW Bush, and Thomas Gates are among many members of the same club.  They have been haunting us for quite some time.  How much longer will we tolerate them and their clanking chains?

I really want to see the corruption in Iraq investigated. Where is all the money? What happened to the rebuilding? I don’t believe the rebuilding was hampered by security problems because if you look at the news archives in, like say, Democracy Now the real explosive issues didn’t start right away. Yet the rebuilding of infrastructure didn’t happen and it help to fuel the the war.

Another thing I really want to see investigated is the Sibel Edmonds information. What was behind all that? Why all the secrecy? I think it’s just another corruption scandal. But it could be much more than that. I think it needs to be unearthed.

I have my doubts because that Congress will truly thoroughly investigate all the problems with the leadup and procecution of this war in Iraq.  My faith in our Congress to turn over enough rocks that may implicate members on both sides of the aisles is less then solid.

I think the people of this nation are feed up with the carefully crafted show that is intended to disorient “We The People”.  I hope that if Congress whitewashes this mess all the key whitewashers get replaced in the next election.

How about saying: “If Pelosi refuses to impeach, then she is unfit to be the next speaker of the house?”

How about charges against Rumsfeld (and others) under the US WAR CRIMES ACT?

How about putting in your own ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT?

How about the T word, “treason” for the Bush regime’s shenanigans around 9-11?  For that matter, how about mention of the head of Pakistani intelligence linked to $100,000 funding to Mohamed Atta?

What about the “Department of Homeland Security” DC-9 with 5.5 tons of COCAINE busted in Yucatan Mexico in April of this year?

Where’s the $3 TRILLION DOLLARS UNACCOUNTED FOR BY THE PENTAGON?

Where’s our Bill of Rights?

Enough talk.  It’s time for action.

I know a lot of democrat senators and house of representatives were for war from the beginning to end, but it does not mean that democrats can white wash the entire episode of inhumanity.

I would like to see hearings, followed by trials, and then prison for those that are guilty.  One of the biggest problems in America is the two tier justice system.  These war profiteers need to be punished for what they have done.  If this bunch gets away with it then there is no hope for the country.

Another big threat to the country is the propaganda machine that talked the middle class into supporting these fascist in the first place.
That has to be dismantled.

Turning the other cheek is bullshit when it comes to this.  Tom Delay tried to destroy the two party system so Republicans would keep power.  He is a traitor.

Put these corporate bigwigs that pay themselves hundreds of millions of dollars a year while outsourcing jobs and hiring scabs in jail. They are weakining the industrial base of the country for short term gain. Clean house, that is what the American people want. May their lives be filled with lawyers.

Bipartinship DOES NOT MEAN “to give in” or “to go along with” these crooks, criminals and thugs. Democracy DEMANDS that the truth and nothing but the ‘whole truth’ be exposed and made known to the citizens, and that is US, who put elected officials like Pelosi in their positions and (don’t forget) are paying their salaries.
I am glad to share the following from activist at democrats dot com <activist@democrats.com>- - - -
On Election Day, the American people voted overwhelmingly for change. We are thrilled to congratulate Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Reid and we fully support Pelosi’s 100-hour agenda.
But Speaker Pelosi says impeachment is “off the table.” How can we let George Bush and Dick Cheney get away with the Constitutional crimes they have committed - and continue to commit?
How can there be real change when Bush and Cheney insist on occupying Iraq forever at incalculable cost to human life and national debt?
And how can there be real change when Bush and Cheney insist the “War on Terror” gives them the power to invade Iran whenever they please?
And how can there be real change when Bush and Cheney break the law every day through torture and warrantless wiretaps?
And how can there be real change when Bush and Cheney nullify every law they don’t like with signing statements?
On Saturday, Democrats.com and our progressive allies will launch a nationwide grassroots mobilization for impeachment in Philadelphia near Independence Hall, where the Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. The mobilization is called ImpeachForChange. Our goals include:
A grassroots petition drive to collect 1 million signatures at ImpeachForChange.org
Form Impeachment Committees in all 435 Congressional Districts to lobby every Member of Congress by:
delivering books & videos on impeachment
collecting petitions and handwritten letters in front of their District Offices
meeting with every Member to discuss the issues that require impeachment
Expand our Citizens Impeachment Commission to add prominent citizens, celebrities and bloggers
12/10 Bush v. Gore Day:
Hold Town Hall Meetings on impeachment around the country with Citizens Impeachment Commission speakers
12/15-17 Bill of Rights Weekend:
Collect petitions and handwritten letters at malls, libraries, post offices, and door-to-door
Sell pocket Constitutions, bumper stickers, books, videos
2007: Pass Impeachment bills in state legislatures

The inability for Congress to proceed with a thorough investigation into 9/11 and the Iraq War is a sad, tragic testimony to the complete and utter lack of accountability for wrong actions that this entire nation has become emblematic for.  The external world is merely a mirror of the intrapsychic world.  Do we forget that the very symbol of our Lady of Liberty that she holds up for the entire world to see is a torch of freedom which symbolizes the sacrifices that our forefathers made in order to ensure that Truth and Justice were the fabric of our way of life?  If Americans cannot see that by Congress abrogating its oversight responsibility is a pathetic, egregious insult to the honor, dignity and courageous, selfless acts of those who shed blood for you and me to live freely, then we are truly a lost nation indeed.  The day that America fails to hold its highest officials responsible for what could one day come to be known as the most outrageous, heinous, nefarious and pathological act perpetrated against this country for their own narcissistic, avaricious ends, then the morality of the people who fail to see this dire need for justice are little better than those who turned their heads in silence when 6,000,000 were sent to concentration camps and gas chambers.  The moral fibre of this country is in tatters if we fail in this duty.  And, if that is the case, then we need not worry about terrorists abroad for our own demise is of our pathetic making.

Until we the people STOP allowing them to police themselfs, nothing is going to change. It does not make a difference what party is in office or who has control, this issue of; lies bringing us to war, should have made it on a national ballot.

Both parties have proven through out history, they cannot be trusted.

It’s all about them.
How about making,
lobbying illegal,
making immigration reform mean,
you must speak English, you have to enter the country legally, if you enter illegally, and you have a child here, you child is not a US citizen, your entitled to zero benefits, if you require medical or any other assistance, your employer pays. Enforce illegal hiring, making the fines start at $100K,
you cannot vote until you’re a legal resident for 10 years. Current illegals are deported, no matter how long it takes or what it cost, it’s worth the investment.

Any state that allows voting machines without a paper trail opens the door for a recall of it’s elected officials.

When Religions cross the line, they lose their Tax Exempt status.
Pork is the other white meat, not legal extortion.

Congress and senate go on the Social Security System like the rest of us, not a private retirement fund, and they don’t vote on there raises, we do at election time.

We need to start somewhere.

While anger at the Republicans is understandable, it would be a fatal mistake if the Democrats thought the mandate given them by the voters is to seek revenge from the Republicans. Democrats were elected because voters believe that the Republicans screwed up in a number of areas and wanted to give the other guys a chance to fix the many problems. The article by David Moore on this website suggests that corruption, the economy, values and Iraq were the most important reasons, but Iraq was not the most important. In fact, Iraq ranked behind the economy, corruption, and values. These are domestic issues. The Democrats best opportunity to impress voters going into 2008 is to convince them that they care about issues important to the middle and working classes, including the working poor. Their plan has to focus on college tuition tax credits and increasing the amount available for student loans. The plan also has to provide health insurance for all Americans that is not dependent on employers footing the bill, especially small businesses. And the plan must shore up the social security system. Congress needs to pass, very quickly, legislation that slows the trend toward the outsourcing of family wage jobs to other countries by eliminating laws that gives subsidies and tax credits to corporations who move jobs overseas, and by increasing the minimum wage. They also need to act quickly to pass stronger ethics laws for Congress such as accepting gifts and travel from lobbyists, and anything of value for that matter. It won’t end the corruption, which is like trying to take the white off rice, but maybe they can at least get it back to the levels that preceeded the Republicans takeover of Congress. This domestic program should be given the highest priority. If they succed, then the public might be willing to tolerate hearings into how Bush decided to go to war in Iraq, if only for its entertainment value.

Turning to foreign policy, it’s obvious there are no good options to Iraq that will keep that country from sliding into anarchy, unless the three main groups can agree on allocation of oil revenues and a system of participatory governance that works for all of them. Maybe if each group believes it can prosper they will opt for stability and security. The U.S. also needs to gradually remove the troops by the end of 2007 and abandon the humoungous military base it is building there, which is intended to destabilize other countries in the region, e.g. Iran and Syria.

It also needs to stop proping up repressive regimes such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait so it can control their oil, and allow the citizens in those countries to seek their own solutions, even if it means overthrowing their corrupt leaders. And it needs to stop supporting and paying for Israel’s goal to create a “Greater Israel” by trying to drive the Palestinians out of Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem, activities that are all in violation of numerous United Nations resolutions.

In foreign policy Democrats need to re-establish relations with its allies, emphasize diplomacy over threats and military power, and stop its hypocritical policy of allowing, even encouraging certain countries to build nuclear weapons while telling other countries they cannot, and while at the same time building up its own nuclear arsenal.

But first, it’s all about focusing on domestic policies.

It is all about accountability.  If we don’t uphold the law, then the law becomes a joke--and we’ve had a painful lesson in what happens when people who consider the law a joke get into power.  Investigate, fire, impeach, try, convict.  Restore faith in our system, or nothing else matters.
