It is important to determine the real reason we are in Iraq today. And that will require an investigation. War crimes, torture, and perpetual lying by the Bush Administration should be sufficient grounds for an impeachment. But an investiagation into how we got into Iraq is a good place to start.

Please someone actually being accountable for something-not in this government-and not in any of our lifetimes-sad and very true. Greed rules and always will.

If we cringe at the prospect of investigations and another impeachment process, we will have another President at another time, that follows the blue print left behind by Bush Chaney and Rove with the backing of a rubber stamp congress.

The question is, can America afford a second coming of another satanic administraion that attacks soveriegn nations, pillages and kills for the ultimate prize of enslaving nations for thier natural resources?

Our president is about to take a called third strike.  The first strike against him will be the passage of the Kucinich bill that cuts off all funding for the Iraq war.  The second strike is his impeachment, towards which the Congressional hearings on the Iraq war will prove most beneficial.  The third strike, of course, is his trial at the International Court of Criminal Justice - “Members of the jury, on the charge of crimes against humanity, what is your verdict?” “Guilty as charged, your honor.”

Investigations? Gee, what a great idea.

While your at it would you also “investigate” 9/11 one more time.

Rep. Kucinich makes many good points in his consideration for accountability about getting into the Iraqi war.  They’re all right.  Each and every person who swore to abide by our constitution when elected to serve Americans who had a part in the deceit to involve our country in an illegal, grossly immoral war should and must be called to answer.  A democracy cannot simply allow them to go riding off into the sunset, scott free of this killing responsibility.

More than all Rep. Kucinich covered is the vitally important aspect of setting the example that America, we the people, will not tolerate a repeat performance by any person aspiring to become president of our country or by any person who occupies the Oval Office.  Straight ftrom the top, down the chain of command, all must be called to answer and, as any common criminal, pay the ultimate cost.

Moreover, it is a must, so that our descendants know that we have not abandoned them to a government that has committed these atrocities; that we have paved the way to once again, have those we’ve elected do the will of the people as set out in our constitution.

Just the crimes we all know of would, if answered, place Bush, Cheyney, Rumsfeld and others behind bars for the rest of their lives.  We do not need to know of the crimes as yet hidden.  The horrors of Iraq; the conspiracy to validate Bush’s invasion, is enough for American’s to bear.

The very idea of President Clinton being impeached for a blow-job [pardon the language, it could be worse], in comparrison to the crimes against humanity planned and carried out by Bush, Inc. is enough to make Satan cringe.  Let’s get on with it.

Bush’s statements, yesterday concerning what he had learned from the Vietnam war left me spluttering and thinking about the nature of ‘Folly’.. First, I would like to recommend a great book by
the great American historian Barbara Tuchman, ‘The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam’. In this book Tuchman sets out what constitutes true Folly as committed by a nation, using the fall of Troy in the Homer’s Iliad as example. She saw Folly as having four components:
1) The act must be one of choice , something not closely bound to the national interest. In her first example, the Trojans had no pressing need to bring that big wooden horse inside the gates of the city.
2) The nation must have been clearly warned against this action.
In the example, Cassandra’s warning, ”Beware of Greeks bearing gifts” falls on deaf ears.
3) The act must be done without thought of any of it’s consequences. In the example, ‘Why would you want a big Greek horse inside the walls of your city, in the first place”?
4) Having committed the act, a nation must do something to make the possible negative consequences much worse. In the example, after bringing the Trojan horse inside the gates the army of Troy sets out to get dead drunk.

In her book Tuchman sets out about half a dozen historical examples of true national ‘Folly’ ending with Vietnam. There is no clearer textbook example Folly in recent history than Iraq. That it was a war of choice and that all warnings against it were ignored is obvious, as is the lack of any consideration of consequences .The disbanding of the Iraqi army and ‘debaathification of the civil government are strong contenders for point #4 but there are of course others….

The Greeks had a word for the real lesson of all this, ‘Hubris’.  Arrogant leaders never learn from their mistakes and nations that willfully believe they will, whether in Nixon’s ‘Secret Plan for Peace in Vietnam’, or Bush’s ‘New Course in Iraq’ are bound for tragedy.

“The American people deserve to have detailed and accurate information about the role of the Bush administration in developing the interrogation policies and practices that have engendered such deep criticism and concern at home and around the world,” Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., wrote Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Leahy demanded two documents whose existence the CIA recently acknowledged in response to a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union.

“If President Bush and the Justice Department authorized the CIA to torture its prisoners, the public has a right to know,” said Jameel Jaffer, an ACLU attorney involved in the case.

The first document is a directive Bush signed giving the CIA authority to set up detention facilities outside the U.S. and outlining interrogation methods that may be used against detainees.

The second is a 2002 memo from the Justice Department’s office of Legal Counsel to the CIA General Counsel regarding interrogation methods that the spy agency may use against top al Qaida members.

Leahy asked Gonzales to produce any revisions and analyses of those and other memos. He also requested agency documents that interpret the scope of interrogation practices permitted and prohibited by the detainee Treatment Act or the Military Commissions Act.

I like the expression of “The Great Cleansing”.  We need one yet I have doubts that it is going to occur anytime soon.  The majority of our Represenatives don’t have the stomache for it.  They might get caught up in some vicious battles within their little club.  Others might use their corporate friends to assasinate their character.  The Corporate leaders can get pretty dirty.

It is much easier for them to send the fools who believe that our government represents virtuous ideals to a Combat Zone.  Fools and their lives will soon part while greed is the staple in D.C.

I didn’t vote for the Democrats in this election.  I didn’t vote for the Republicans either.  As I usually do, I voted for Libertarian candidates, where available.

But I’ll tell you this:  You (Democrats) do what you said, you hold this administration accountable, you impose the penalties provided by law on those responsible, and I’ll be proud to support the Democratic party with my vote, energy, and advocacy for a long, long time.

I just don’t understand; who the hell will care if there were hearings in 2007 ten to fifteen years from now when the last of the ice-shelves slips off the coast of Greenland??

The work required to establish some kind of carbon tax is monumental and doesn’t leave much room for anything else.

The people who care already know who did what.

I agree that hearings need to be held.  It would be great if they could be seen as something other than partisan payback.  If someone leads them that we can trust, such as Kucinich, then maybe it would be best if they were not open to the press.

It could be announced that this is a fact finding investigation with no partisan agenda.  In keeping with this, the hearings will be closed to the press, and that its testimony and findings will be announced to the Congress and the press when they are complete.

This would allow Congress to get on with its business while the investigations go forward.

with all due respect Mr. Kucinich, why the USA invaded Iraq, which was never a threat to anyone except its own people, is irrelevant.  The USA needs to leave ASAP and let them fight their own battles....how many countries have had a “civil war” and survived??? did any other country intervene when the USA had its own civil war??? let the “joke” in the whitehouse finance the civil war...the “hearings” can be held after the troops are safely home. Anyone connected to the invasion should be tried for war crimes.

I posted above. In the post I questioned the reconstruction efforts and how I saw no progress from the start. Iraqis were asking for reconstruction help. They were begging for it. Still the water and electricity issues were ignored. The governing process was hampered.

If you read the article you will you see that even Gen. Mike Hagee was mystified by the lack of concern for post invation planning. Nobody is this incompetent. Nobody. I saw the same thing with Katrina. What the hell was behind all this?

Representative Kucinich, enlightened as ever!  Keeping it simple but very real while people freak out over Nancy Pelosi’s “taking [impeachment] off the table” statement. 

Truly, it is not up to her or any one individual to decide.  It will be done once we take Rep. Kucinich’s and the other congressional committee’s path. 

Glaring evidence will mandate the next steps to accountability and recompense.  The American people have already spoken in no unsure terms.  This will be done.  Stop freaking out!

More importantly, we need to focus on OUR vision for the future, everyone included, no exceptions!! 

Thankfully we have angels like Kucinich, Conyers, etal.

Go Dennis!  You always see through the lies, and you always speak the truth!  I can’t wait to see Bush answer to your investigation.

As many responders have replied; the 2006 election was about accountability.  The only respectful thing for our congresspersons to do is demand accountability for the war crimes that have occurred.  Then the entire group (and that includes MORE than just George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales, John Yoo, Donald Feith(?), Richard Perle, John Rendon, et al). It is just too sad.

Investigations should proceed. Nancy Pelosi could become the first woman president if the mood of the public is such, through thorough investigations showing the depth of corruption that permeates Congress, to support impeachment of Bush and Cheney. Not a far fetched idea, however unlikely.

While I don’t subscribe to revenge or “payback” in any form, I will believe with my last breath that few institutions are more important than “justice being served.”

In this light, let us not forget the many unanswered questions of 9-ll such as no response after the North Tower was attacked (or for that matter, the lack of response when THAT plane changed course).

And let us not forget the arrogance demonstrated during Katrina of Bush playing “air guitar” and rushing to photo ops, Cheney relaxing and hunting in Wyoming and Condelezza shopping for shoes “while Rome burned.”

Having done a little homework, I have acquired a greater respect for Ms. Pelosi—her background and history are impressive.  But I agree with John C (11/10) that it would not be a “waste of time” to pursue this president for his criminal acts against the state and against humanity.  If we can’t demand that our Constitution be upheld, then we need to teach our children well that men like Patrick Henry, Paul Revere and James Madison lived and died in vain.  If we don’t have the self-respect to hold ourselves accountable as a nation for crimes done in our name, then how can we demand respect from any other nation or people?
If we cannot separate right from wrong then it is a waste of time to try to explain ourselves to our children, to demonstrate that actions have consequences and we can just throw self-discipline out the window.
If Ms. Pelosi cannot draw the line in the sand for this president, then pray tell what crimes are we to sanction for future presidents?
It is reprehensible for the new House leadership to wink at the criminal acts of this president and his coterie.
It can only be hoped that a future tribunal will bring the guilty to justice.  If not, then we indeed contemplate a miserable future.  What better way to redeem our nation than to take responsibility and to do it on the world stage so that the world can see we are a worthy people.
There may come a day when the American people have justice for the insults and egregious assaults on their integrity.  If that time comes, then our leaders will also have to stand trial for their withdrawal from and shunning of reality.
The crimes of the administration are too many to enumerate. We expected things from our Democrats.  We expected that they not wink at atrocities, at arrogance, at blatant evil.  We will hold our leaders to account – both Democrat and Republican.  They must oversee.  They must back their words with acts.
And as much as we admire and respect John Murtha, his proposal is only a furtherance of the Bush Doctrine.  He wants to bring the troops home, but he wants to proceed with bombing Iraq into a Cromagnon state.  That is unacceptable.  We are not cavemen; we should not behave as cavemen.

I really want to see the corruption in Iraq investigated. Where is all the money? What happened to the rebuilding? I don’t believe the rebuilding was hampered by security problems because if you look at the news archives in, like say, Democracy Now the real explosive issues didn’t start right away. Yet the rebuilding of infrastructure didn’t happen and it help to fuel the the war.

Another thing I really want to see investigated is the Sibel Edmonds information. What was behind all that? Why all the secrecy? I think it’s just another corruption scandal. But it could be much more than that. I think it needs to be unearthed.

I have my doubts because that Congress will truly thoroughly investigate all the problems with the leadup and procecution of this war in Iraq.  My faith in our Congress to turn over enough rocks that may implicate members on both sides of the aisles is less then solid.

I think the people of this nation are feed up with the carefully crafted show that is intended to disorient “We The People”.  I hope that if Congress whitewashes this mess all the key whitewashers get replaced in the next election.

How about saying: “If Pelosi refuses to impeach, then she is unfit to be the next speaker of the house?”

I would like to see hearings, followed by trials, and then prison for those that are guilty.  One of the biggest problems in America is the two tier justice system.  These war profiteers need to be punished for what they have done.  If this bunch gets away with it then there is no hope for the country.

Another big threat to the country is the propaganda machine that talked the middle class into supporting these fascist in the first place.
That has to be dismantled. 

Turning the other cheek is bullshit when it comes to this.  Tom Delay tried to destroy the two party system so Republicans would keep power.  He is a traitor.

The inability for Congress to proceed with a thorough investigation into 9/11 and the Iraq War is a sad, tragic testimony to the complete and utter lack of accountability for wrong actions that this entire nation has become emblematic for.  The external world is merely a mirror of the intrapsychic world.  Do we forget that the very symbol of our Lady of Liberty that she holds up for the entire world to see is a torch of freedom which symbolizes the sacrifices that our forefathers made in order to ensure that Truth and Justice were the fabric of our way of life?  If Americans cannot see that by Congress abrogating its oversight responsibility is a pathetic, egregious insult to the honor, dignity and courageous, selfless acts of those who shed blood for you and me to live freely, then we are truly a lost nation indeed.  The day that America fails to hold its highest officials responsible for what could one day come to be known as the most outrageous, heinous, nefarious and pathological act perpetrated against this country for their own narcissistic, avaricious ends, then the morality of the people who fail to see this dire need for justice are little better than those who turned their heads in silence when 6,000,000 were sent to concentration camps and gas chambers.  The moral fibre of this country is in tatters if we fail in this duty.  And, if that is the case, then we need not worry about terrorists abroad for our own demise is of our pathetic making.

Do hold to account, which should have been the priority of the chambers all along, but don’t let investigations get in the way of needed reform. With all of the revolutionary changes that have happened reversing the damage may appear reactionary, which sounds ironic.

TALK is cheap - if ever there was a time to bring back the guillotine its NOW. The REAL war has been on the middle class of this country and for its success Bush & Co. deserve all the credit BIG BUSINESS can, has and will heap on them. It should be so easy to follow the money trail that even the dolts in Congress can do it -the real question is are they afraid of whose door it will stop at. Just investigate, dont draw any conclusions BEFORE the investigation.  Trying to prognosticate what the investigations will reveal will only give ammunition to those who want to SWEEP THE MESS UNDER THE RUG.  Like RUSH LINTPAW said about Clintons affair with M. Lewdinsky “We only want to find the truth” Let that be our motto.  We want to find the truth.  Only that!!  If the truth shuld find any criminality---well we can cross that bridge when we see it.  Stupidity and cultural ignorance was the real cause of this “all”.  Dont play into their hands by doing what they did which was to prosecute before the investigation was complete.  They threw the inspectators out and proceeded based on their eroneuos assumptions.

Until we the people STOP allowing them to police themselfs, nothing is going to change. It does not make a difference what party is in office or who has control, this issue of; lies bringing us to war, should have made it on a national ballot.

Both parties have proven through out history, they cannot be trusted.

This could be the end of the national nightmare we have suffered through over the past 6 years...IF Dennis Kucinich and other members of Congress are allowed to pursue the truth.  The first order of business HAS to be to get Ms. Pelosi and other accommodationists off the backs of Kucinich, Conyers, Woolsey, and the 70 or 80 other members who are determined to do their Constitutional duty.

It ain’t about payback...it’s about accountability and about insuring that our nation will never again come so close to destruction as it has under the current criminal regime.

While anger at the Republicans is understandable, it would be a fatal mistake if the Democrats thought the mandate given them by the voters is to seek revenge from the Republicans. Democrats were elected because voters believe that the Republicans screwed up in a number of areas and wanted to give the other guys a chance to fix the many problems. The article by David Moore on this website suggests that corruption, the economy, values and Iraq were the most important reasons, but Iraq was not the most important. In fact, Iraq ranked behind the economy, corruption, and values. These are domestic issues. The Democrats best opportunity to impress voters going into 2008 is to convince them that they care about issues important to the middle and working classes, including the working poor. Their plan has to focus on college tuition tax credits and increasing the amount available for student loans. The plan also has to provide health insurance for all Americans that is not dependent on employers footing the bill, especially small businesses. And the plan must shore up the social security system. Congress needs to pass, very quickly, legislation that slows the trend toward the outsourcing of family wage jobs to other countries by eliminating laws that gives subsidies and tax credits to corporations who move jobs overseas, and by increasing the minimum wage. They also need to act quickly to pass stronger ethics laws for Congress such as accepting gifts and travel from lobbyists, and anything of value for that matter. It won’t end the corruption, which is like trying to take the white off rice, but maybe they can at least get it back to the levels that preceeded the Republicans takeover of Congress. This domestic program should be given the highest priority. If they succed, then the public might be willing to tolerate hearings into how Bush decided to go to war in Iraq, if only for its entertainment value. 

Turning to foreign policy, it’s obvious there are no good options to Iraq that will keep that country from sliding into anarchy, unless the three main groups can agree on allocation of oil revenues and a system of participatory governance that works for all of them. Maybe if each group believes it can prosper they will opt for stability and security. The U.S. also needs to gradually remove the troops by the end of 2007 and abandon the humoungous military base it is building there, which is intended to destabilize other countries in the region, e.g. Iran and Syria.

It also needs to stop proping up repressive regimes such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait so it can control their oil, and allow the citizens in those countries to seek their own solutions, even if it means overthrowing their corrupt leaders. And it needs to stop supporting and paying for Israel’s goal to create a “Greater Israel” by trying to drive the Palestinians out of Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem, activities that are all in violation of numerous United Nations resolutions.

In foreign policy Democrats need to re-establish relations with its allies, emphasize diplomacy over threats and military power, and stop its hypocritical policy of allowing, even encouraging certain countries to build nuclear weapons while telling other countries they cannot, and while at the same time building up its own nuclear arsenal.

But first, it’s all about focusing on domestic policies.

Finally, ONE Democrat saying SOMETHING to indicate that we may have actually upgraded the Congress a little.  With all the weak, conciliatory, business-as-usual mutterings coming from Pelosi and Dean and the like in the past couple of days, I was beginning to wonder why we’d bothered to go to the polls.

It is all about accountability.  If we don’t uphold the law, then the law becomes a joke--and we’ve had a painful lesson in what happens when people who consider the law a joke get into power.  Investigate, fire, impeach, try, convict.  Restore faith in our system, or nothing else matters.

I think we should do a few things to promote a healthier democracy:
