Robert Scheer: Gates Has Some Explaining to Do

Rumsfeld, Bush and Gates

By Robert Scheer

The abrupt replacement of Donald Rumsfeld with former CIA Director Robert Gates is a Hail Mary pass designed to provide President Bush a face-saving exit from the deepening quagmire of Iraq. Gates, as Bush noted in his Nov. 8 press conference, is a member of the Baker-Hamilton Iraq survey group, which will present a plan next week that the president is certain to seize upon as his only available life preserver.

Like James Baker, Gates is a reliable member of the team of veterans from the George Herbert Walker Bush years, which has been doubtful about the plan to invade Iraq ever since it was a gleam in the eyes of Rumsfeld. Gates’ ascendancy clearly suggests that the neoconservatives have been tossed into the ashcan of history.

Gates, however, has baggage of his own—carried over from his involvement in the Iran-Contra affair, which derailed his confirmation as CIA director in 1987. (He was later confirmed, in 1991.) Gates will have to explain anew his connections with the people who secretly sold arms to Iran—then and now defined as a major terrorist enemy of the U.S.—and who then used those funds to overthrow the Sandinista-run government in Nicaragua.  After all, the leader of the Sandinista government, Daniel Ortega, was just elected president of his country in a free election.  Iran, by contrast, is now vying with North Korea for the status of the world’s most threatening rogue nation.  Just why Gates thought it wise to supply the Iranian ayatollahs with arms remains a pressing question.

Explaining?  Plenty of time for that while he’s on trial at the International Court of Criminal Justice for his crimes against humanity.  Which crimes?  Well for starters how’s about f what his CIA trained Contras did in their war of terror against the Nicaraguan people?
What to do in the meanwhile?  Continue changing the world, that’s what.  Towards where?  That’s up to us.

Don’t forget:
Gates is not only a former director of the CIA (whose principle function appears to be smuggling drugs and selling them as a means to fund covert operations, which largely amount to over-throwing regimes that are hostile to the CIA’s drug smuggling efforts), but he is a confirmed Council on Foreign Relations member, as well as a member of the Carlyle Group.

He’s a sycophant who dare not question his bosses, Bush Sr. among them, or his central mission: to prolong fake wars (on ‘terror,’ on ‘drugs’) so as to 1) obtain resources in the “offending” enemy country (drugs, oil, gas, etc.), stay the collapse of the dollar, and get the US into further debt to the Federal Reserve, so that FR can collect interest payments. The rest of us pay with our taxes, our higher prices (due to inflationary pressure from the FR putting more money into circulation), and the blood of our children (as soldiers). Recently, we are also paying with the blood of our citizens (9/11 was inside job), as well as the machinery of our democracy.

IF the new Democratic majority will not move to hold impeachment hearings, then I would say for sure that this nation is over with. It IS my country, too, and I don’t want to leave. IS it too late to get back our Bill of Rights? It’s too late to get back the lives of those who died in Iraq and on 9/11, but is there a way to set things right?

Getting the truth out is the bedrock foundation for moving forward.

The mainstream media will not tell you any of these things. Read “Into the Buzzsaw: Leading Journalists Expose the Myth of a Free Press,” (edited) by Kristina Borjesson. It’s the best $13.92 you’ll ever spend on Amazon.

The Neo-Con movement is not isolated to the republican party.  First there is very little conservative about it.  It is facist, corporatism at its worst.

I think the election above all else signifies that “We The People” see ourselves above this unitary executive plan pushed by these elitest.  Elitest consider themselves above the rest of us and they don’t mind lying to congress or offering our servicemen as sacrifices for the advancement of their elitest societies.

We need serious investigations that are not limited to issues that can not be disputed because the criminals can still cover themselves in a shroud of secrecy.

It is one thing to undertake covert actions to destabilize other nations not friendly to us and another thing to undertake covert actions of citizens of the United States in the United States or arm enemies of the United States in secret transactions.  We need oversight that is truly bipartisian and not a powerplay of dominence complete with hiding the truth from the people.

Illegal activity is illegal.  Selling arms to a nation that had an embargo against such sales was illegal.  The fact that this was done to advance the well being of a few while costing the rest of us tremendously is treason and should not be allowed to be dismissed by claims of being out of the loop and a shroud of secrecy.

Just hiding illegal activity in secret documents that do not jepodize our existance should at least be criminal if not treacherous.  Certainly less treacherous then a leak about such illegal activity.  Whisle blowers will never be protected by such thugs.

The only way to find a real solution is to come clean with the TRUTH.  It is said that the TRUTH will set you free and all bullies that don’t have the stomache to fight their own battles seek to deny the Truth.  Just like a typical pedophile don’t tell or else.  Someone needs to step up and demand the truth.  I will gladly support a true leader that will ensure that the truth be told.

The comments on this site reflect a good cross section of America.  There are the mindless offerings of the “let’s kill all the bad guys” crowd and the thoughtful ponderings of the more sane among us.
The wonder is that this nation can produce such disparate views.  The frightening part is that the mindless also vote.
Look more closely, nothing has changed.  The “Elephant in the Room”(the Palestinian/Israel issue) of which no one dares to speak, is not only unchanged but has gathered a few more advocates with the newly elected members of government.
Also fortifying our “special relationship” with Israel is the installation of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, who sees an “unbreakable bond” between the United States and Israel.

Until we wake up to the fact that the Arab nations in general hate us (“Why do they hate us”) for the same reason that the “native” Americans hate us, we will continue along the same destructive course.
We are seen as “joined at the hip” with the rogue state of Israel which is bent on creating a nation (for jews only) by forcefully displacing the native population.  This was wrong when we Americans did it and remains wrong when we help the Israelis do it.
All the rest is window dressing and meaningless.

The solution is clear, it’s the resolute thinking of our citizens that is thoroughly muddied and that is not accidental.

My comment?  Censure, impeach, indict, arrest, try in the Hague for crimes against the people of the United States and the people of Iraq. Try all of them…Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Rice, Feith, Perle, Wolfowitz, on and on and on!  And throw in several Bush I sycophants as well!  I truly fear the Democrats’ modus operandi…what DO they have in mind??  If Nancy Pelosi’s “assurances” that “impeachment is off the table” turn out to be for real and not just
“election strategy,” then We the People will have to continue this hard fight to bring the DEMS into line with our thinking as well! I feel that the bureaucrats want to destroy our nation, but I can’t figure out for the life of me WHY???!!! Is Bush a communist, or just an oil-mongering whore??

That is the last thing we need is another retread spook (CIA) cloak and dagger type to run the war. Give me a General or an Admiral who has been in the trenches and fought in a war to lead us out of this pit. I did not support this war but by God we owe it to the men and women who are putting their lives on the line to at least give them a leader who would knows to put and end to this thing and get them home as soon as possible. Tommy Franks, Colin Powell, Tony Zinni are just a few names of Generals who could straighten out this mess Rumsfeld has created. If we are going to fight a war, then put someone in charge other than a CIA spook who has spend his career sneaking around illegally overthrowing governments in foreign countries that most Americans know nothing about. I just hope and pray that all of American will remember what our brave men and women have done and not totally forget about them or treat them the way our soldiers were treated when they returned from Vietnam.

I would think that Mr. Gates having been a key player in the CIA during the Afghanistan Insurgency against the Russian backed Government there, would understand the huge cost of such an occupation. I would hope he would admit the only to win this type of war is to withdraw. By going into and staying in Iraq we have strengthened the extremists in three major areas. Our occupation has proven to be a facilitator of recruitment for the extremists (we kill one and two new recruits appear), our occupation has openly exposed our limitations in fighting such a war (Kissinger said “You can’t kill an idea.”), and lastly the huge deficits created in personel commitments and monetary expenditures they have been able to inflict on us. All this will continue, as long as they can keep us engaged in such folly.

I support our troops, but not morons like you two.

People like you who are in the service or were in the service seem to have the sense that they are better than all the rest of us pukes who do not enjoy a good war or Killing and maiming regardless of why the war is being fought.  You also seem to think you are more patriotic than the rest of us ungrateful folks.  Well, not necessarily true.

“Were just happy to have a war to fight” What an idiot.

If you talk with most sane folks, Police, fire fighters, military or anyone else who is trained for violent and dangerous jobs they say train for the worst and hope for the best.  In other words, be prepared to totally dominate when you need to but do not prey for the worst to occur. You have obviously forgotten that by at least having a war to fight means you have lost some of your good brothers and sisters.  When you say bring it on, remember, it is not just you that is affected. People like you just want to kill and do it legally and get off on it. Hoo Rah!

I am sure in your pea brains, this war will do, and any war will do as long as you can kill the bad guy and tout your patriotism bla bla bla…

If this country were under “a real” attack, people like me and many others who are probably too old to draft would volunteer in a heart beat to protect our country just like those drafted in other wars have.  It was not their first choice of things to do just out of high school or college but their duty just the same.

After WWII there has not been one noble justifiable war fought.  Stopping Japan and Germany/Italy was a dire need for the entire world and not many can argue against that.
But, Korea, Viet Nam, Gulf War #1 and Iraq…
These are political battles and battles of ideology at best.  The current war is just for fun for the neo-cons.

So, keep looking for more reasons to use your bayonet and fire your weapon because there is not much use for you after your active service is done.

PS:  Mite:  there are no jackals or Gestapo waiting at our doors.  Currently, there is no enemy in the world that is remotely close to our doors.  Even the radical Islamic folks have a very difficult time reaching our shore.  (pearl harbor and 911 are the only real modern day attacks on the US.  The closest threat the average American faces is from our own government!  So, sit back and watch another John Wayne war movie and keep your gun ready.

mite,

Happy Birthday.  as far as 37370 goes I started a reply earlier then decided that he is either a boot or not a jarhead at all.

I remember a part of an oath that I took which swore to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic.  What he describes would make him a domestic enemy.

If he is a boot hopefully a few Salty Dogs will teach him a few lessons so he might live through the things he might face.

I think our new Congress must prove that it is serious and defend our Constitution itself.  Gates is more involved in the illegal activities of a group that feels that it is above the law.  I have questions since the Arms for hostage trade about the dealings of these elitest.  I seriously was floored when I read this email:

Letters to the Editor

Portland Press Herald

Dear Editor:

Before Israel devotees jump on Bill Slavick (“Inhumanity, silence reap the whirlwind,” August 21) for revealing that where Israel is concerned, things are not always as they seem, consider:

* On June 8, 1967, as Israel was warring on neighbors, it bombed the clearly marked USS Liberty, killing 34 Americans, and strafed bombing survivors. When the Liberty radioed for air support, President Lyndon Johnson called off the relief to avoid a confrontation with Israel. Washington continues to refuse a full investigation.

* The bombing of the Beirut Marine barracks on October 23, 1983, killed 241 Marine peacekeepers. It is blamed “on terrorists, most likely Hezbollah,” with Syria and Iran involvement, and serves as foundation for US hostility to Hezbollah. In fact, perhaps the largest non-nuclear bomb explosion ever was 666 pounds of enhanced RDX “rag bombs”—“enhanced” with propane gas and primed with PETN boosters or detonation cord, an Israeli specialty. In 1983, the only active sources of RDX were the US, France, Canada, Sweden, China—and Israel. A year earlier, Israeli defense intelligence headquarters had been accidently destroyed by an RDX explosion. US military intelligence knows where the bomb came from, a secret for 23 years now.

* On Feb. 14, 2005, Lebanon Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, Lebanon’s unifying political figure, died in an RDX explosion, quickly blamed on Syria, forcing its withdrawal from Lebanese affairs. But the only maker of RDX, Chemko in Slovakia, has never sold to an Arab country; it licensed Israel to buy in 2003.

RIGHT! FRANK, if you believe that then you believe the tooth fairy will leave THE winning lottery ticket under your pillow.

The so-called war on terror is a re-tread from Raygun as a way to keep the American people on edge and willing to go along with the obscene military budget that is spending your, mine, and our children´s future on death and destruction so that a few assholes can have more power and put more money in off-shore accounts. EXACTLY HOW HARD IS THAT TO UNDERSTAND IN LIGHT OF THE HISTORY OF THE LAST 60 YEARS, ESPECIALLY THE LAST 6 WHEN THEY DID NOT EVEN TRY VERY HARD TO HIDE WHAT THEIR AIMS WERE? IT SHOULD BE CLEAR TO ANYONE WILLING TO THINK ABOUT IT FOR AT LEAST THREE MINUTES.

THE ONLY DIRECTION IN IRAQ IS OUT…NOW…AND TAKE YOUR CONTRACTS FOR OIL MADE UNDER DURESS AND WITH YOUR FELLOW CROOKS, AND YOUR CONTRACTORS OF DEATH WITH YOU.

AND BTW….LEAVE ENOUGH CASH BEHIND FOR THE IRAQIS TO REBUILD THEIR INFRASTRUCTURE.

Sorry, but the Democratic party has already surrendered….

How you say after their victory…..could they have given up so easily…?

It’s really quite simple.

They have given up by accepting and supporting the Gates nomination for secretary of Defense. Mr. Gates nomination is not a change of direction, it’s only sleight of hand….it’s not what the people voted for, in other words it’s not change it’s the same o’l same o’l….

and this is why the Neo cons including Rumsfeld are not that upset about Rumsfelds resignation….

Gates will restore papa Bush to the white house along with Baker, and Kissinger, and the war will continue as planned…

and it shows once again just how spineless and gutless the Democratic party has become….

Maybe instead of Pelosi for speaker of the house we should have someone else

“Mariam, I think the rationale for a ‘new direction’ in Iraq and for not leaving there immediately is that we do want to leave Iraq to the Iraqi people, and not leave Iraq to Al Quaida or a handful of Islamic warlords.”

>>>>>>>>>>

In response: “Al Queda…Islamic Warlords”(?) Let’s get clear: Islamo-Fascism is a CIA/MI-6 PRODUCT. It is GLADIO for the Middle East. It is the STRATEGY OF TENSION for the 21st Century. It is to destabilize, confuse and serve up pretexts for expansive military intervention and ultimate control of oil markets; ultimately, salvation of the collapsing petro/drug/arms-dollar. All other issues which dance around this central driving agenda are miniscule parsings of the multitudinous disinformation which saturates the corporate media.

This election was not a 50-seat blowout simply because of the amount of election crime they did manage to get away with. Intelligence-linked operatives are the only ones the Bush crime family can trust. Their hubris is beyond the bounds of even the world stage. e.g. Kissinger to head up the 911 Commission?!?!?

These Strange Loves must be stopped before they start WWIII. Investigate them all. Prosecute them all to the full measure of the law. Give no quarter. At any sign of weakness they will turn and set upon you with daggers drawn.

Methinks daddy and his cronies, Baker, Gates, whoever have stepped into the driver’s seat.  (They did it for years whenever, which was always, Georgie’s “business” ventures went belly-up.)

I also think that because the GOP is bifurcating like crazy - a lot of “old” conservatives jumping ship like drowning rats - the party is bringing in the big, respected Goldwater/Reagan guns to the rescue, not to save America but to save the Grand Old Party.

It is absolutely vital that the Dems realize the days of dealing with the nut jobs are over.  Tomorrow they’d better have a plan to deal with the Big Boys.

Aside from George Bush the first, isn’t Gates the only other living human being with the claim of being most responsible for the blowback America now faces?

This guy was neck deep involved in:

-Arming bin Laden & the USSR fighting Afghanis
-Iran Contra
-Iraqgate
-Missing Saddam’s Nuke program
-Missing the formation of al Qaeda
-Missing Saddam’s Kuwaiti invasion
-Failing to detect the first WTC Bombing plot

What a fantastic choice. Did George W. “Everything I Touch Turns to Crap” pick this guy himself? Do we really need a Sec of Defense? Can’t we hold off for the next couple of years until we can get an adult into the Presidency?

You tin-hat paranoids see pain and terror in everything our President wants to do! (Just kidding) ;}

A Bush family powerbase is within the CIA. The Gates appointment is an attempt by the Bush clan to keep their thumbs on the uppity generals.  Can’t prove it, just an opinion.

Mariam, I think the rationale for a ‘new direction’ in Iraq and for not leaving there immediately is that we do want to leave Iraq to the Iraqi people, and not leave Iraq to Al Quaida or a handful of Islamic warlords.

Methinks you rush the trashcan too quickly. The Straussian goal of creating a scary, forever-enemy that could be whipped out on cue whenever the rent-a-serfs think about getting uppity is certainly Mission Accomplished.

It is the Bill-of-Rights, Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and even the Magna Carta that lie in that trash bin unless they can be rescued. The 109th Congress did not accomplish anything much they would talk about, but from taxes, to two tiered Bankruptcy, to habeas, the 109th has been devastatingly effective at destroying all the above documents.

Having achieved their third (4th?) phase of their plan, they are ready to move on to the next. If the new Congress does not move smartly to repair at least enough devastation on all fronts to allow an honest congress to remain they will be snookered yet again two years from now, and not have the current outrage to help them.

Far from being ignorable, but for some real domestic stupidity, from Macaca to Foley, the Gang Of Perps would still have both houses, and have just more horse biscuits masquerading as plans that get neither followed or accomplished.

Just how many more of these cookie cutter Dr. Strangeloves are waiting in the wings. Raygun had the decency to die, what is wrong with this group?

Proof positive that the Bush bunch may be as graceless as a hippo in a tutu, but they are certainly not outside the agenda of the conservatives.

WE HAVE TO KEEP THAT AT THE FOREFRONT OF OUR MINDS IN THE COMING MONTHS AND YEARS WHEN THE SPIN GETS VERY THICK.

BTW…WHAT IN HELL DO THEY MEAN…A NEW DIRECTION IN IRAQ…THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE DIRECTION SHOULD BE OUT….AND TAKE YOUR CONTRACTS WITH YOU….AND LEAVE IRAQ TO THE IRAQIS…..OIL AND ALL.
