Molly Ivins: Media With No Guts, No Grace

SAN FRANCISCO—Do you think the Bush administration is going after the press? The San Francisco Chronicle said on the front page, “Cameraman Jailed for Not Yielding Tape,” whereas The New York Times reported, “U.S. Wins Access to Reporter Phone Records.” I’m feeling like a bunny trying to outrun a pack of wolfhounds.

Sometimes the press enjoys scaring itself or pretending it is about to be made into a bunch of martyrs. This is not one of those times. We are under full attack now, and it is time to fight. I am not infuriated by the performance of the press so far, but I am disgusted. Bob Novak is the most notable traitor, but others are leaping for political favors as they rush to insist The New York Times shouldn’t print the news (and occasionally, quite old news at that). I fail to see how Fox News and other right-wing outlets have so little imagination they cannot picture themselves in the same corner come a Democratic administration. What goes around comes around and all that good stuff, but to set it up so that payback is hell for yourself is tragically, deeply dumb. I have watched the D.C. press corps play courtier to Bush since he openly insulted Helen Thomas, who is not only a first-rate journalist but a lady as well. Shame on you all. No principle, no guts, no grace.

On another topic, I was talking to a guy named Andy the other night when he observed that unlike President Bush, he had learned firsthand that diplomacy works with skunks. He was speaking of the striped, tail-up-bad-sign kind, but they seem a perfect metaphor for the rest of what he laughingly calls Bush’s diplomatic strategery—at which point the proper response is to ask, “What diplomatic strategery?” Has anyone seen a foreign policy lately? Does anyone still know what containment means? These are, after all, the people who were against arms control because Bill Clinton was for it.

One feels like Casey Stengel looking at the early Mets: “Doesn’t anybody here know how to play this game?” In the most contemptible act of irresponsibility imaginable, the neocons who pulled together to start this war now reject any responsibility for it. Mr. Wolfowitz is busy running the World Bank; it’s no longer his business.

The rest of this crew of moral pygmies is too frightened of Dick Cheney to point out that this entire war is a disaster, or a fiasco, as Thomas E. Ricks, author of the new book “Fiasco,” puts it. I think the Bush foreign policy—when in doubt, send Condi Rice home—is a public relations ploy to keep the Israeli-Lebanese war going long enough so that Americans won’t notice Iraq has completely collapsed in the meantime. And it has collapsed. I suggest our military figure out how to get out of there before it loses an entire effing army on the way.

In Washington, the sophomore wienies who now staff the administration are far too terrified of Cheney to speak up, even if they had enough sense to notice it’s going rather badly. Oh, for heaven’s sake—send Cheney back to south Texas so he can shoot at caged birds there. The Wizard of Oz had more credibility.

I think they’re running around the Middle East looking for a red heifer. (For those of you who don’t read your news straight from the Book of Revelations, a red heifer is needed to set off the Rapture. We’re working on it.)

Well, if you can’t get any global action from this outfit, how about some plain old legislation? Nope. The Republicans’ latest effort was to pass a callous imitation of a minimum wage increase ($2.10 an hour over two years) after 10 years with no raise. They may fall over in gratitude. And, in the same bill, mind you, this crew of crazed philanthropists insisted on another multibillion-dollar cut in the estate tax. For really, really rich people. Rep. Zach Wamp gloatingly told the Democrats, “We have outfoxed you.” Outfoxed? A tiny increase in the minimum wage and a huge tax cut for multimillionaires. Does this make any sense? Does this even make politics?

In a splendid display of incompetence, the Republicans went on to make hay of pension reform plans.

Meanwhile, I have yet another complaint to lodge against George W. Bush. “The man is a moron!” is not political debate. Not helpful. Not even prudent, as his old man would say. But that is precisely what he leaves us saying: “But, he is a complete moron.” Someone needs to pick up this discussion and point out that at least he’s our moron and say something encouraging like someday maybe he’ll learn to pronounce nuclear. We can count on him not to change his mind about stem cell research no matter what people learn. And, the only foreign leader he’s necked with is female.

It’s not the “Voters Stupid”. . .the elections were stolen both of them!!!!  Read Robert Kennedy’s Rolling Stone articles about Ohio.  I was in Florida during the 2000 elections when the bullies (Washington DC flaks) came pounding on Miami’s precint demanding that they NOT recount the votes.  I thought I was in a banana republic.  I couldn’t believe it!  I started writing letters to the Editor of the Key West Citizen; I would get the rudest replys.  After 9/11, I wrote more letters.  People called me a terrorist; jane fonda, cuban spy; said I was going to hell, etc.  My husband and I got death threats.  We moved to New Mexico.  These neocons are not morons; they are deadly dangerous and they have, unfortuately been bad influences on other americans.  Teens in Florida now beat-up homeless people for entertainment.  We are in more hot water than most of us realize, I’m sorry to say.  Maybe when the soldiers come home from Iraq and they don’t recognize their country, they will mobilize and run these guys out of the whitehouse.

Well Done Ms.Ivins.

Somewhere long ago some wise old sage said something about underestimating the enemy.

Wise advise for those of us who would like to think George W. is a moron.  Clearly the man is effective.  He’s managed one of the most impressive cons in history.

He may be a psychotic A$$hole but he and his crew are effective psychotic A$$holes.

Don’t worry, Linda! When the Chinese start running the planet (which they will be able to do after Bush and Cheney finish running America into the ditch) they will demand that Bush be turned over to an international war crimes tribunal. (Dick Cheney will have conveniently “died” by then a la Ken Lay.) Then we’ll see how many years of economic sanctions and oil embargos U.S. citizens are willing endure to protect the Commander in Thief.

On second thought, let me say “Worry, Linda!”

With regard to our moron president, I submit the following joke sent to me by another proud lib’ral which had me laughing off and on all day.
As I read it, I thought it to be emblematic of Bush’s misadventures in Middle East democracy-building.

While on vacation, George Bush calls Condi and says, “Please come down to the ranch and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get started.”
Condi says, “George I’m kinda busy with Israel and Lebanon.  But maybe I can help you over the phone. What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?”
George says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a rooster and I reeeaaaalllllllllllly want to finish it before I have to go back to Washington!”
Condi decides to go to the ranch and help with the puzzle. When she arrives George shows her where he has the puzzle spread all over the table.
Condi studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to George and says, “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster”.
She then pats George’s hand and says patiently, “Secondly, I want you to relax.  Let’s have a nice cup of tea, and then…” she says with a deep sigh…“we’ll put all these Corn Flakes back in the box.”

I recall that poor Canadian press secretary, Francie???, who lost her job early on for calling “W” a moron close enough to a reporter for the story to be reported. It was obvious then, and it is SO obvious now. What he has done SO FAR has nearly destroyed the country. Yet, how many are awake enough to realize what they’ve lost? Or care? And, crime after crime after crime and no one in the Congress, save our guiding light Conyers, seems to have enough backbone to stand up to him. Where are you Henry (Waxman)? (my congressman who could be calling for impeachment but isn’t) Where are you Dianne and Barbara? Spending too much time campaigning for losing-Joe rather than on the job fighting Bush’s destruction of our economy, environment, and world?
Impeachment is the LEAST that can be done. What about indictment? Oh, forgot, we have Gonzalez as head of Justice!!! Will we make it to the midterms? And will voters actually be able to cast ballots that aren’t rigged by Diebold? Will there be time to repair any of this? How many people want to? Stay tuned.

I don’t consider myself Democrat or Republican, but Realist - trying to think ahead and do the best thing for myself, my family and my nation. That means that quite often I have voted for Democrats in the past…but where is the “Party of the People” these days?
Has anyone entertained the idea that the Democratic Party has been infiltrated by folks who don’t want them to be a strong contender in any election?  The wimpiness of Democrats when given the incredible arrogance and law-breaking of he current administration says to me that they’ve lost their guts and spine.  Everyone I read on this blog, and many others must surely agree that SOMETHING drastic has to happen - like stand up - look them right in the eyes - and cry “BULLSHIT!!!”  Then get out to your paper-trailed no-Diebold voting sites and do it!!!  Complacency is killing America far faster and more thoroughly than any terrorist!  Of course, I don’t mean any of the aware and conscientious people who follow this site - would that all Americans felt their patriotic duty as much - the REAL patriotic duty of questioning our “elected” leaders and calling them to account -not the flag-waving and Bible thumping these jokers have been doing.  The average American citizen is a caring, decent kind of guy - but the world believes that We the People are the same as the Thugs who have hijacked our great Constitutional nation and are using to line their pockets and setting up environmental and fiscal policies that will continue to feed their coffers for many years to come, even if Diebold doesn’t make elections a
futile effort in illusion and lies from now on.  Why is it that banks and merchants can keep paper trails of every kind of transaction, yet such a basic and important institution as elections can’t do it?  Sounds pretty fishy and what’s more, the average citizen KNOWS it’s fishy - but the DC folks are doing everything they can -with very well paid Psychology and Advrertizing proffesionals to “help” - to keep everyone divided, afraid and just generally unsettled.  They know that will keep any group from getting big enough to get some real answers.
And the big question is - if Dems don’t do a thorough investigation of all this slime when/if they do get the chance - WHY?  Who’s in bed with whom?  Money is at work in both parties, folks and it isn’t just Republithugs who may have been bought.  Don’t listen to rhetoric - check and double-check FACTS and then DO SOMETHING!!  STICK YOUR NECK OUT!!!  We never won any war (and this is a war on our basic foundational principles) by being wimpy and afraid - that’s how they are controlling us.  Don’t let them!  We have the power to change the way things are if enough people cry ENOUGH!!  But it won’t be easy or painless - no serious surgery ever is. We have a serious malignant growth in our government that must be removed for the good of the national body, and the entire world.  Our Constitution gave the right to vote the bastards out!!  Come on!  Let’s do it!!!

The further pauperization of the U.S. middle class, a politically disinteristed and uninformed generation coming out of culturally failing U.S. public school systems, poor environmental stewardship and religous dogma at the expense of common sense at every level, are the recipe being allowed to solidify.
This embarassing nightmare is one we will have to attempt to sort out for the rest of our lives.
Where the 21st century could have been one in which things generally got better on the planet, with new challenges taking humanity on a positive leap into the cosmos, the mind, body and future, it has instead been more strongly insured as a greater likelihood that we, like those before us, are hindered in overall global progress by this many messes being perpetuated and exacerbated so non-chalantly and without scruple now - handled as such by people who will not be around to deal with the fallout of the setbacks they are stupidly and selfishly causing.
For those of us who are relatively young and care, it will be stop-loss in every realm for the rest of our lives. We will need lots of luck and innovation.

I agree with you completely as Bush has tied the future of America with that of the Mid East in no uncertain terms. And yes the consequences of his policies when scrutinized are chilling. In fact Bush is a rather frightening individual who has spread mistrust and fear throughout much of the world which is now armed to the teeth, not a healthy situation at all. His bid for power has endangered all of us as he continues to break the laws of the land and flaunts the constitution setting precedents that may continue with future leaders which is not a very appealing prospect at all.

Does Mollie actually read the comments about her columns? A lot of posters address her directly, and I’d think she’d like some feedback, but she must have a lot to read.

As for the comment about “losing an entire effing army,” that’s a scary and not impossible prospect. Iran has had years to infiltrate its agents into Iraq through the SCIRI party and other Arab (as opposed to Persian) organisations that it set up as counterweights to Saddam during the Iran-Iraq war. Should the U.S. attack Iran, they could unleash an all-out Shiite attack against U.S. forces in Iraq. You see how many missiles Hezbollah is able to fire into Israel? Think they couldn’t rain Katyushas into every U.S. military camp big enough to have its own targeting grid? Remember the Tet Offensive? Those poor soldiers in Iraq could see King Tet.

As for the lame-arse media, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Not the angry, aware people here, of course. But the dolts who watch Fox, and the complacent people who are mildly upset at the way things are going in the U.S., but not upset enough to do anything about it. If there were enough Americans who were fired up about it, this site would crash from the traffic. You’d see comments in the thousands (like that athiest thread) instead of the dozens. America has the media it deserves.

I used to live in San Francisco, a bastion of liberalism. But my wife and I were oddities among our left-leaning friends because we were so freaked about what was going on. Others would whinge, and vote for Dems, but that was the extent of it. They didn’t even march against the war. We didn’t see any hope, which is why we left the country. Not criticising any of you folks, because you have the right attitude. But not until the U.S. economy implodes, which will happen after the U.S. uses nuclear weapons on Iran, will the U.S. public wake up.

We the People are that last facet of the checks and balance system. We’re not used to oligarchs and dictatorships, so most of us are pretty much in shock and afraid to make the first move. In Mexico, the poor have been oppressed by the rich for decades, so they immediately took to the streets by the millions after the sham election. The only thing keeping Bush in office is his 30% base of apocalyptic Christianists. If the ice caps keep melting, they’ll get their flood.

Thanks so much for your response to my comment: “What part of “stupid” don’t I understand?”

It may very well be true that “the buck” does not stop with George Bush, that he is simply a puppet president.  Chaney, Rove, and probably the military/industrial complex, along with unseen others, may be calling the strategy and shots for our domestic and foreign policy.  However, I neglected to mention that these brilliant morons and idiots have also managed to: 1) Subvert our election system. 2) Allow the highjacking of our foreign policy by AIPAC,Christian and Jewish Zionists, and probably our military/industrial complex. 3)Plunder the common good and standard of living of poor and ordinary people to benefit their wealthy private and corporate campaign contributors. 4) Either through de facto control or influence, create a massive propaganda machine
throughout our major media outlets. 5) eliminate the balance of powers incorporated into the U.S, Constitution.

The fact that corporate media is in bed with the Bush administration is no surprise since corporate elite that owns the media also owns the political parties, may be GOP more the Democratic party. The collusion between the GOP and the corporate became more overt and aggressive with take over of the news media by multinational coporations. The news media, including the public television, aggressive propped up the presidency of George Bush, even to the extent of firing reporters who did not completely cooporate.

The corporate news U.S. media is as much of a joke as the press under a dictatorship. One just has to look at CNN, MSNBC, FOX, CNBC and the like and chuckle at the hogwash being presented by Wolf Blitzer, Scarborough, Carlson, Mathews and the like.

“What part of “stupid” don’t I understand?”

Bush IS a moron.

The moron isn’t a neocon or any part of that, and they are just the ones who are taking the blame for the badly run war which never had anything to do with democracy or brutal dictators or any such.

The real rulers of America today communicate with the Bushitter gang of thugs via Cheney in his “undisclosed location,” for just the reason that no one is allowed to see him GETTING his orders and relaying them on to whomever has to implement them.

The moron was chosen for that reason and that reason alone: he is a moron. He could never actually BE president in his wildest drug induced dreams, and if he ever actually decides anything it will be what kind of sandwiches they get for lunch. If the powers that be had wanted to win the election with a good candidate, they’d have gone with McCain, but they trashed him in order to install the moron where he could strut around pretending to be Preznit while the adults did the thinking and the oil stealing.

What’s wrong with the media, Molly included, is that they won’t breathe a word about what we really are doing because attacking Iraq to steal her oil makes us all part and parcel of a country full of coveting, lying, murdering thieves.

While Israel pursues the path of violence Iraq is dissolving as a country before our eyes. This is the legacy of Bush and his poorly advised advisors. The San Francisco Chronicle says civil war is possible which is rather odd because civil war has been taking place for some time now. I guess it depends on how you define things which is what the news and the government excels at.

I think we all might pause for a moment of silence at the passing of a nation which after all did not take much. Mostly ignorance combined with astonishing bad judgment or to put it more simply the work of a bunch of moronic idiots who now reside in the Whitehouse.

I doubt the passing of Iraq as a nation is taking anyone but Americans by surprise but then Americans tend to see things through their own special lens that divides reality into your side and my side which after all is not a terribly realistic outlook but there you have it. We all seem to think that somehow everything will come out in the wash, everything will be okay as if we have some kind of gene that generates an idiotic sense of optimism often spoken of as American know how or can do.

Looking at the article in the Chronicle we can see how this optimism has led us down the path of wholesale destruction and just how surprised certain folk seem to be.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a /2006/08/04/MNGILKB9KT1.DTL

First let us hear from the good Generals.

General Peter Pace says we do have the possibility of devolving into civil war. General John Abizaid says ditto and the good Peter Pace is SURPRISED at the situation. The good General Pace goes on to say that the issue of civil war is up to the Iraqi to resolve. Yet there would have been no civil wars without the help of geniuses like Pace and his boss the commander in chief. However that is often how things happen, a few good idiots screw everything up for everyone else and then those self same idiots just trot along on their merry way rarely looking back or at themselves to closely.

The sheer stupidity of this whole venture is nothing less than monumental.

And what do two of the most well known politicos who have supported the war in Iraq namely Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain have to say on the matter?

McCain blames the military and says this is all very disturbing. Hillary tells Rumsfeld he is presiding over a failed policy. So even at this late date the problem according to these two intellectual giants is that it is the method and not the madness. Astonishing isn’t it. But don’t feel bad Hillary may be our next president.

And what does Rumsfeld say? He says my goodness.

If you read the article as you scroll down you will read what the experts are saying. Things like civil war is a tactic to drive the Americans out, security must be strengthened, The Iraqi government needs to develop jobs. Oh boy that is rich the government should develop jobs.

Obviously what Iraq needs is more tennis courts, traffic lights and a state run lottery to take their minds off of the negative things in life.

Rumsfeld also says it is not a classic civil war at this stage. Those darned definitions again but I have to admit that is classic Rumsfeld.

Remember these old bits of news? After 9/11 we were told to keep spending money to keep the economy going. In all the past years we’d been hammered over the head about NOT SPENDING MONEY WE DIDN’T HAVE. Interesting. Then they say the economy is good and insist we’re not in a recession - and yet a few years later the papers all talk about how we’re “recovering from the recession”. In California the Republicans made a big stink about Grey Davis’ campaign fund raising, as they did regarding the amount of funds raised by democratic presidential hopefuls. The papers made a huge deal about THAT and nary a peep when Arnold and Bush raised at least TWICE as much as any democrat. The papers made a big deal about Clinton and nary a squawk about Newt who left his ailing wife to marry the woman he’d been fooling around with for years. Can’t criticize the government but Fox will sure as hell air an evanlegist calling for the nuking of San Francisco. EVERYTHING THE REPUBLICANS AND NEWSMEDIA EXPOSED ABOUT THE DEMOCRATS THEY HAVE GONE ON TO DO IN UNFATHOMABLE ARROGANCE AND DEGREE. I just want to scream because it’s like no one cares, it’s all about the money now. When the Republicans completely took over all branches of Gov. I wondered if there had been a coup and we just didn’t know it yet - now I know. When those troops come home they’ll be coming after us this time - just like in Cambodia when they killed all the teachers, scientists and doctors. In Bush’s first term he said something like “It would be easier to run a dictatorship and I want to be the dictator.” That must be what the people want because no one questioned his getting elected the 2nd time, even after he slandered known war veterans and forced the resignation of a reporter who dared question the existence of GW’s service records.

The editoral page of the Wall Street Journal argues for an industrial feudal state where the very wealthy pass on their wealth, and the poor die in the gutters so we don’t have to give up one fish egg in the caviar to prevent it.  The once bold newspapers have caved—witness the New York Times under Sulzberger doing EVERYTHING for cash, even ending the influence of its liberal (and conservative) thinkers: Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman, Nick Kristoff, Frank Rich, et al., solely to try to get $50/reader to read them.

Only bloggers like this keep free speech and a free press alive.

That’s why that quisling Joe Lieberman is finished as senator. You can’t be claim influence with this administration if you don’t USE it!  The people of Connecticut are smart enough to get around the sell-out papers and tv stations to see how Lieberman has completely missed the boat.  “You moved away—by standing still”—Henry Drummond, Inherit the Wind.

But we still have Molly!  You go, girl!

I was listening to you trash Mad King George and how useless he was when they broke in on WNYC to announce that the North Tower of the WTC was burning.  You were right then, and you are right now….

Back in Nixon’s time, with a diligent, watchdog press, you knew that Nixon was corrupt and democracy was being violated. You knew who wore the black hats in America, because back then, the media were among those who wore the white hats.

Fast forward to W—-Arrogant, incompetent, unconcerned, cowardly, etc. He’s the apple of his mommy’s eye, in direct contact with God (and the other voices in his head), and the bane of the entire world. This man and his cronies have gotten away with more things than I can count, yet the media react like lapdogs, rather than bulldogs. When it came to exposing the corruption, challenging the motives and informing Americans what this administration has been up to their white hats flew off.

In Nixon’s time, the press was the champion of justice and democracy. In these sorry times, the press has become as sleazy and slimy as our own president and his administration. There are some who still wear white hats (e.g. Molly Ivins), but there are far more who have sold out to the dark side. Which explains why an alarming number of Americans still adamantly defend concepts like Saddam Hussein was behind the attacks on 9/11, or that he had weapons of mass destruction.

There was a time, back in the day, when we could believe the words we read in newspapers, or heard on primetime news. And when integrity and credibility were words we could associate with journalists and newscasters.  Sadly, this is no longer so.

Imagine how different things might be today had we had the same press in 2000 that we had in Nixon’s time. The feeding frenzy that comes with breaking news would have focused on Republicans and their election scandals instead of a media all too eager to bury the real story. The integrity of American elections would have remained in tact. Al Gore would have taken his rightful place. And two hundred-plus-years of democracy would still exist.

As usual Molly Ivins hits the spot.  This totally incompetent administration run by cronies who have contempt for government and anything resembling protecting the public; is a mirror of Bush’s arrogant and destructive personality.  I don’t think it helps to call him stupid.

It gives him a pass because of supposed stupidity.  While there is arrogance and hubris,  all the name calling does not affect change.
Without a fearless press, and an aroused and politically active populace who can put fear in the hearts of our heartless representatives, I don’t see the possibility for real change.

Yes, Keith Olbermann does tell it like it is, and does reporting and not stenography.

p.s. As if you haven’t noticed.  Rumsfeld, Bush and Cheney are all chanting the same mantra over and over again, History will judge blah blah, History will…blah blah..History will…blah blah..I can just see their handsomely, paid “History Writers” clacking away, type, type, type.  As if.

Amen to Molly Ivins! I am utterly saturated with horror and disgust with this administration and everytime they say or do something, it triggers my revulsion to a new level. It would take too many words to describe their incompetence, narcissism, arrogance, deception and just plan evil-doing unto others. Molly’s words said it as good as anyone’s could.

As much as the neocons horrify me, the Democrats seem to be so passive and muted, almost taking a “victim” stance. Where are their morals and passion for needs of the people? Are they on too many “soft” payrolls that prohibit them from rolling in the gravel with these people? These messianic neocons are destroying everything that helped to build a strong middle class and provide safety nets for the poor and vulnerable. How do we get our “leaders” to put a brake on this runaway train? When is everyone going to take to the streets and storm the Bastille?

Speaking of no guts Molly, can you or anyone at truthdig explain why the only 1-day old report about the hezbollah guns in previously unattacked Beirut meighborhoods, and the many posts in response to it-has been pulled from the homepage AND archive? I KNOW since we’re talking about a Sheer/Ivins vehicle here and not a Krauthammmer/NO’Reilly one, it couldn’t POSSIBLY be censorship, because it doesn’t fit in with truthdig’s pro-terrorist point of view, could it?
Much, much to my disappointment, this “no-spin zone” is starting to seem an awful lot like the other one.

IF THE NEWS MEDIA IS GUTLESS THEN THERE IS ONLY ONE OPTION LEFT:

AMERICAN COLONIALS FOUGHT FOR FREEDOM AND WON.

THEY FORMED THE HEART AND SOUL OF OUR NATION.

A CIVIL WAR WAS FOUGHT TO MAKE US AS ONE.

GERMAN CITIZENS MARCHED AND TORE DOWN THE WALL.

THEY BROUGHT DOWN COMMUNISM AND CHANGED THE WORLD.

IN UKRAINE THE ORANGE REVOLUTION CHANGED A GOVERNMENT.

THERE WAS STRENGTH, COURAGE, AND WISDOM IN THEIR HEARTS.

DO THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY EVEN WANT TO CHANGE?

IF SO THEN WHAT IS IN THEIR HEARTS?

HOW MUCH OF IT IS FOR POWER, HATE, AND GREED?

Molly, I too used to wonder about the logic in this:

“I fail to see how Fox News and other right-wing outlets have so little imagination they cannot picture themselves in the same corner come a Democratic administration.”

My take is the “New-Con Order” has no intention of ever letting a Democratic administration return to the seat of power.

All must Heil Bush, or they will be labeled an enemy of the Homeland and dragged off to one of those new confinement centers being built around the country.

All voting machines will continue to be programmed with proprietary code that may not be examined by any objective party, and the handful of men who own all major media outlets will continue to be the ones who tally the votes.

The future holds more wars, war without end, amen. We are already trapped in a very bad black and white movie where history is altered to fit the current scenario of who is an enemy.

I have lost faith, and the time for corrective action—that begins with decent folks voting for decent representation in honest and fair elections—has passed.  The “Help America Vote” act does nothing of the sort.

And of course, idiocy is now adorable, desirable, and will soon be mandated.  That’s what “Leave No Child Behind” is all about.

Pessimistic much? Yup. What else can I think as things only get worse every day?

Miss Molly asks, “Has anyone seen a foreign policy lately?”  The Decider was asked the other day what the foreign policy of his administration was and he said, “My foreign policy is liberty.  Next question?”  I know the guy suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder, but must he display it in public, to the whole world?

I do blame the Press (not you Molly) for letting things get this far out of control in the first place.  If the press had been accurately outing these Repug scumbags all along we wouldn’t be in this mess.

I do also blame the press (including you Molly) for not having the guts to look squarely at the 9/11 myth and call it what it is, false-flag state sponsored war provocation terrorism and high treason.  Look around, the myth is crumbling before our eyes.  Wake up before it’s too late.

Although I read Molly’s article with great interest and approval, although statements like
“But, he is a complete moron” seem absurd to me.
You will find essentially the same types of comments all over the internet.

These neocons are anything but stupid. They have brought our country within an inch of a total police state and totalitarianism.  They have effectively neutralized nearly all opposition. They have trashed the constitution.

Through psych-ops in this country, they have robotized public opinion.

They are brilliant in their deceptions and manipulations.

What part of “stupid” don’t I understand?

Molly, I think all of us are running out of synonyms for disgust, contempt, cowardice, moronic, bigoted, avarice, arrogance, ignorance ad infinitum. You and Ms. Thomas represent a diminishing segment of the press that hasn’t made the Faustian bargain. I have doubts, grounded in reality, that we may never return to democratic rule. I hope that my vision of the future is only a paranoid delusion. The other day I read of a young man who was arrested by police for photographing a drug dealer’s arrest in his neighborhood. The observer was charged with obstruction of justice. This bodes ill for those who will try to capture images of election fraud and voter intimidation come November. Thank you for remaining steadfast.

Molly, I love you. I’m concerned at how angry you sound here today but, I’m not disappointed. You are absolutely correct and quite justified in your frustration and outrage. There’s no room left anymore for pleasantries. This administration is an abomination and their contemptuous, spiteful approach to every issue spits in the face of Jesus Christ. They deal with every situation with violence. Soon they will bring the troops home—-to open fire on the “enemies” they believe exist here in America. The dissidents and truth-tellers are their “enemy combatants”. They will never cede power peacefully so, don’t expect that come November we are going to see a glorious new day in America. They have declared war and they have decided who the enemies are. I pray to God I’m wrong but, so far, I haven’t been wrong about a single thing. Be careful Molly. These aren’t decent, ordinary Americans, they are steroid and crack addicts overwhelmed with hatred and rage. They are going to either crush their opponents or die trying.

Do I care if the Bush administration is going after the press? No. Do I care that the press is NOT going after the Bush administration? Hell yes! The Declaration of Independence states, in effect, that those who have the ‘ability’ to change wrongdoings in government have a ‘responsibility’ to do something about it. The media is guilty of NOT doing their job of informing Americans of what is really going on, and challenging leaders’ actions. Let’s not forget that back in 2000, the American media was the first to brush off the questions, anomalies and the blatant misdoings of an election that was clearly suspect, if not openly corrupt. The press was first to shrug it off and say ‘move on’ and ‘get over it’ to the American people, and now every election since has played out the same way. Remember when Wally O’Dell, head of Diebold voting machine company wrote that memo promising voters in Ohio a Republican victory? Where was the media then? Where are they now? Do we really think anything in this country or the world is going to improve with our current, election system? Until this is addressed, elections will be more like theater, having nothing to do with democracy. Democratic candidates across the nation will take huge leads in exit polls, only to mysteriously lose to Republican opponents in “eleventh-hour anomalies”. Voting machines will be found to have little glitches, where votes for Democratic candidates ‘mistakenly’ flip to Republicans.  Vote counts will show Republican victories, as large numbers of minorities were bullied, intimidated or just denied access to vote due to fabricated felon lists and other disgusting tactics. Welcome to our world. We have the media to thank for allowing it … facilitating it… and not screaming in outrage, on every page and in every broadcast.

The religion of our nation is the “pursuit of self-interest with the Invisible Hand taking care of the common good”. The badge of honor is wealth. If we are doing the work of the Invisible Hand we will be rewarded with wealth ... so all we have to do is follow the money and we are on the righteous path.

Journalists aren’t the only ones who are true believers in today’s religion ... politicians, sports heroes, celebrities, CEO’s, etc., etc., etc., even preachers and evangelists ...

So asking troubling questions that get you cut off from primary sources and thereby reduce your paygrade is not an option.

We have sold our birthright of creative reason for another bowl of porridge.

Yes, you and Helen Thomas (and some others) are exceptions ... that IS what you are, exceptions ... that highlight the rule.

So the purpose of Congress is for one party to “outfox” the other. Wamp is actually PROUD of that remark, and the legislative con game that engendered it?

They really do think they’re going to run the world forever - I can’t come up with any other explanation for the shortsightedness of the entire Republican run-over-the-faces-of-the-opposition tactic. They just don’t believe it’s even remotely possible that this kind of stuff will come back to bite them in the backside some day.

And they really can’t understand why we’re angry. I mean, what can you DO with that kind of stick-stone-bone stupidity? How can we deal with that kind of sociopathic lack of understanding of human nature.

I simply cannot WAIT for November. If America gives the Congress back to these morons - yes, Molly, that is indeed the right word - AGAIN, then we deserve what we get. And I have no doubt that we will indeed get it.

It’s also curious how the 24/7 news outfits can give you the exact day of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, but only Keith Olbermann on MSNBC has the guts to say it’s been over 1183 days since “Mission Accomplished” was declared. And where is the Iraqi war footage? What happened to the “embedded” reporters? Hezbollah has no qualms about showing horrible civilian deaths. Iraq has to be the most sanitized coverage since the invasion of Grenada. Is it the news media that is so “show-biz” oriented that it can’t present an honest picture from Iraq? Or is it government censorship of the media, like the rule about not photographing returning coffins, that keeps the public ignorant about what is being done in their name?
