Truthdigger of the Week: John MurthaPosted on Jun 17, 2006Truthdig salutes Penn. Rep. John Murtha for his sustained leadership in demanding a pullout of U.S. troops out from Iraq. Particularly inspiring was his conduct during Thursday’s congressional debate over the war. A GOP congressman all but called Murtha a coward, and the 38-year Marine veteran thundered back a response that sent the congressman scurrying for cover. In doing so, Murtha again demonstrated the Republican fallacy of equating a call for withdrawal with weakness. It’s a lesson more Democrats could stand to learn.
Watch the video of Murtha on the House floor:

I would love to see Murtha nominated to run for pres. Nothing like having a co-conspirator in abscam. Is Murtha really the best you can do for president? I mean, I realize that Gore and Kerry couldn’t even beat Bush, who is a complete idiot. But it all comes down to Murtha? We all realize Hillary doesn’t stand a chance. But Murtha? ahahahahaha.
I’ll look forward to another 8 years of CONSERVATIVISM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“A GOP congressman all but called Murtha a coward, and the 38-year Marine veteran thundered back a response that sent the congressman scurrying for cover.”
I cannot find anywhere in the following video or transcript following this quote anything that in any way supports two very scurrilous comments (e.g., cowardice and scurrying for cover). Please try to be accurate in your observations.

Smithee, of the Michael Moore School of Foreign Policy doesn’t seem to understand just how vicious a place the world he lives in is, and on what unsavory principles it works. He should ask all the former turncoat Leftists barking in praise of in this Administration that gave us this disaster. They’d be glad to edify him. Such comments indicate another common, sub minor Clintonista type panicked over the current betrayal by his former leadership, and offering a late 60’s style, pseudo intellectual, Jerry Rubinesque attack on one of the few Realists in the presently configured Democratic Party. Past that Savant, I have the idea that in terms of Political symbolism, i.e. that readily understood, John Murtha easily becomes Gary Cooper in the classic 1952 Western allegory “High Noon” betrayed, abandoned, outnumbered and outgunned--Some sharp Political Cartoonist should pick it up before long. It’d sure as hell be a potent and entertaining image worth more than one vote.

Alan Smithee is right. Murtha is not talking about changing the bigger picture of our (America’s) Big Power role in the world, and so his proposal would not result in earth-shattering change. But we would be wrong to minimize his importance in changing the debate on Iraq itself. As a combat vet who has come to see this failed policy as a disaster for Iraqis, Americans, and real opposition to the likes of Bin Laden etc., he can be a voice for change on the margins. Rather than rail against him for his failings, a compassionate heart (and sensible strategist) requires that we support him in his short term goals. They are goals that the average American can accept, and he is at least willing to stand up to the McCarthyite attacks that so intimidate most Democrats.

Indeed, Murtha is a heroic figure with lofty goals. But, after invading Iraq (destruction of culture and loss of life) and spending billions to build/occupy nearby bases) to stabilize/maintain our future oil reserves, don’t we all recognize THERE WILL BE NO HOMECOMING?

Murtha is another side of the same prowar coin. The democrat hawk version of the republican ‘war on terra’. Murtha’s Plan, as per his Nov. 17, 2005 statement:
~Immediately redeploy U.S. troops consistent with the safety of U.S. forces.
~Create a quick reaction force in the region.
~Create an over-the-horizon presence of Marines.
~Diplomatically pursue security and stability in Iraq
Murtha has repeatedly made clear his prime concern is keeping the US military powerful in order to continue waging wars on foreign countries.
He has NOT come out in opposition to the war crimes committed against people in Iraq, or to the whole drive for permanent war around the world (the “war on terrorism"). He IS worried the US military will not be able to continue this course if it stays in Iraq.
The Murtha Plan is Bullshit. It’s “strategic deployment” will not mean an end to the war on Iraq, torture and war crimes, or the unending war launched after 9/11.

We all should be questioning the ability of those who got us into this mess to get us out of it.
In what other field of endeavor would we continually go back to the “professionals” who had failed so dramatically? Would we let someone continue to build a house for us who hadn’t laid a foundation? Would we let them finish a bridge that went nowhere? (Oops, sorry ... maybe some of us would do that!) I mean, my god! We should be laughing these clowns off the stage of power. Cheney gave us the iconic event for their efforts, “The gang who couldn’t shoot straight”. (Some of us STILL didn’t get it.)
The mess? No one has to document it for any of us any more: A quagmire of an insurgent war in Iraq with no viable exit strategy that restores stability to the Middle East, paying for this war by expanding the deficit, failing to adequately respond to Katrina and its aftermath, ... and those are three of the most obvious examples, any one of which leads to the rational assumption that someone has failed miserably ... and that assumption would have been made WITH Congressional investigations, I suggest, at almost any other time in our national history.
Have we exchanged our capacity for critical thinking for loyalty to “King” George? “Unimpeded executive authority” ... are they (we) nuts?!
Of course Murtha’s right.
If we kowtow to Karl Rove’s bully tactics instead of listening to Congressman John Murtha, we might as well kiss our future goodby. It is hard to believe it is even an issue ... and yet it is.
Murtha is a hero and a man. Rove is the junior high schoolyard bully who kisses up to the rich kid to be able to rid in the limo to the graduation party.
Get real, America!

Murtha is a good Marine. He has paid his dues and his words speak to the truth of the matter. All these Rah-Rah Repubs don’t have what it takes to pay such dues. They only now how to talk with a forked tongue and coerce our young to die for the no bid contracts of their sponsors.
I think Murtha would make a good candidate for president, but right now I’m leaning towart Russ Feingold. I will not support free traders or illegal immigrant amnesty supporters. I need to support someone who stands up for “We The People”, The Constitution, Veterans Benifit Funding, and a fair trade policy that maintains global standards of human decency.
Any sleezeball who will send kids to war and then cut funding to the Hospitals and programs that take care of them after they have been affected by combat deserves to lose everything bit of comfort he has.

Republicans stood up in Congress this week and went on record accusing anyone who wants us out of Iraq, which includes a majority of Americans and the coalition forces who are already withdrawing, of “cut and run” cowardice. Instead of being afraid of this childish insult, let’s remember that they made it and call them on it as Murtha does. I’d like to see them blustering in this foolish way in a Democratic campaign ad.
