Joe Conason: A Whiff of Brimstone, a Shameful Silence on CoulterPosted on Jun 14, 2006By Joe Conason With the predictable regularity of a locust plague, Ann Coulter and her enablers at the once-reputable firm of Random House have issued yet another volume of fascistic entertainment. Now the hard-drinking, trash-talking, fortysomething bachelorette bills herself as a Christian moralist, in holy battle against the liberal heathens. That whiff of brimstone in the air may be only the match she is striking for her next cigarette. But her version of “Christianity” turns out to be a strangely modern and convenient faith, which encourages heaping scorn on bereaved widows, bearing false witness against them on television and publicly gloating over the ill-gotten profits thus attained. Leaving behind the golden rule of the Gospels, she embodies a new rule of gold: You can never be too rich, too thin or too vicious. Too vicious, however, is the only way to categorize Coulter’s attempted assassination of the Sept. 11 widows known as the Jersey Girls, whom she accuses of “enjoying” the horrific deaths of their husbands in the World Trade Center inferno. She harangues them as “broads,” “witches” and “millionaires,” for “reveling in their status as celebrities” while they are “lionized on TV and in articles about them.” Coming from an energetic publicity seeker like Coulter, who still whines bitterly about her elongated cover shot in Time magazine, this is an exercise in self-parody. She goes on to complain that the widows, by telling their personal stories of loss, were able to shut down their critics with sentimentality. But that charge, too, is obviously false, since she is now reaping profits and publicity by savaging them. The truth about the Jersey Girls—Kristen Breitweiser, Patty Casazza, Mindy Kleinberg and Lorie Van Auken—is that they loved their husbands deeply, of course. They and their children continue to suffer from the loss that Coulter so heartlessly mocks. The truth is that in their suffering, these courageous women joined with other widows and family members to demand a serious investigation of Sept. 11. Together, they organized, researched and lobbied for thousands of hours to win the appointment of an independent commission, against the determined political opposition of the White House. The truth is that their success was an important victory for every American, without regard to party or ideology, and a vindication of grass-roots democracy. The nation owes them all a debt of gratitude. What is most disturbing about this episode is not that these women can be victimized by a bully like Coulter, or even that the mainstream media, which abandoned traditional standards of fairness years ago, would eagerly assist her. What is most disappointing is the abject dereliction of the prominent politicians who worked so closely with the Jersey Girls. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), the Senate sponsors of the bill that created the 9/11 Commission, both believed that an independent investigation was essential for reasons of honor and national security. They both know that they could not have prevailed against the White House—and the Republican congressional leadership—without the help of the widows. In the fall of 2002, when their bill passed the Senate and the House, McCain acknowledged the efforts of the widows and their comrades. “I also want to put in a special word for the families,” he said after thanking his fellow statesmen. “Without their unstinting support and efforts, we would not be where we are today.” In the summer of 2004, when the commission’s reform recommendations were debated, Lieberman praised all of the Sept. 11 families, especially acknowledging the Jersey Girls. “I continue to be awed and inspired by your ability to turn your personal tragedies into better public safety for this nation,” said the Connecticut senator. And in the fall of 2005, when McCain needed citizen support for his worthy amendment to ban torture in the war against terrorism, the Jersey Girls rallied to his cause. He was glad enough of their support then. But that was then, and this is now—and these two pious politicians remain silent in the face of a malevolent attack visited on their erstwhile friends. Both men know that it is a lie to call these women partisans or profiteers. Both know that these women—and the families they helped to lead—brought honor and purpose to a legislative process that is often petty and corrupt. Shame on the silent senators. And please, let’s hear no more from either of them for a while about tolerance, respect and decency. To find out more about Joe Conason, visit the Creators Syndicate website at www.creators.com. For comment #12191 by “WarpNine” I reference you to the following websites concerning Clinton and Bin Laden.

And just for giggles, here is the link to the complete 9/11 report, which states “Terrorism was not the overriding national security concern for the U.S. government under either the Clinton or the pre-9/11 Bush administration.” You can find this quote in the General Findings section under the heading of Policies.

John in #12185 says “ We had our chance (numerous times) to get Osama when Clinton was in office.”
Are you just a victim of right wing lies, or a spreader of them?
Here is snopes.com on the topic.
<<The Clinton administration failed to track down the perpetrators of several terrorist attacks against Americans. >>
Status: False.
* It was the Republican Congress who thought Clinton was exaggerating the importance of Osama bin Laden during the “more important” Monica hearings.
<<"In August 1998, when [Clinton] ordered missile strikes in an effort to kill Osama bin Laden, there was widespread speculation from such people as Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) that he was acting precipitously to draw attention away from the Monica S. Lewinsky scandal, then at full boil. Some said he was mistaken for personalizing the terrorism struggle so much around bin Laden. And when he ordered the closing of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House after domestic terrorism in Oklahoma City, some Republicans accused him of hysteria”
http://www.snopes.com/rumors/clinton.htm
Contrast this with Bush: Bob Woodward reports that Clinton warned Bush that Bin Laden was dangerous but Bush didn’t get it(Bush thought Clinton was obsessed about bin Laden for nothing.)
And the best: Bush did NOTHING when warned by the FBI of an imminent attack by bin Laden in the US.... absolutely nothing. So we got caught with our pants down.
—the 9/11 hijackers did not make it the first time through Dulles security.
—traffic controllers were not on alert to look for suspicious activities.
—no one else was on alert. The FBI let key evidence be ignored because…
No ONE was at the wheel…

In regards to comment #12119 by “d martin” concerning my previous posting, I feel obligated to respond.
First of all, in the land of free speech, I can find humor in whatever I want. Liberals quote the first amendment in many ways, so I’ll exercise my right to do the same. As for the Jersey Girls, who cares? Death is simply a fact of life. Yes, they lost loved ones. Yes, it is a shame. No, no amount of money can ever compensate for that. However, I don’t recall the Republican party ever parading around families of terrorist victims in opposition to the policies of a sitting president (and if you will recall, we had quite a few terroist actions while Clinton was in office.) A few words about terrorists: They do what they like, when they like, free of hindrances like morality and conscience. They are inherently unpredictable. They play by no rules, save one: Win at all costs. Perhaps if the military took the kid gloves off when dealing with these people, we might be just a little further ahead.
Now, as to my “bizzare, ignorant, and dangerous way of thinking.” As far as I can see, throughout your whole posting, you’ve presented no facts or reasoning to justify why my way of thinking is wrong. You simply throw insults and profanity at me.
Speaking of profanity, the vulgarity exhibited to someone presenting an opposing opinion simply lends more credence to Ms. Coulter’s comments on liberal mud slinging and character assassination.
Just a small side note about “Attack first, think later.” We had our chance (numerous times) to get Osama when Clinton was in office. Even the more liberal publications have gone on record to say that. Well, Clinton declined to pursue that option. So, in hindsight, by not attacking first, it seems we are doing alot of thinking later. Why stick with a strategy that has proven itself to be a failure?
As far as the “true American majority” having their say, Bush won in 2000 and again in 2004. Last time I read the Constitution, you need a majority of votes in the electoral college to do that. Guess that means the “American majority” got their way. I’ll risk lowering myself to liberal standards and say let’s not hear the whining about how Bush stole the election. After 6 years, not one independent recount has been able to give Gore enough votes to have won anyways.
Feel free to dissect this posting as well.

Judy Canute, you have it wrong about Michelle Goldberg. She isn’t attacking Christians in general or Christianity as a whole, she is reporting on DOMINIONISTS - a particular ‘Christian’ movement that combines a particular interpretation of not only the Bible, but history and politics as well. It is, frankly, an awful movement that twists Christian teachings. It is also antiAmerican in that they ultimatley want to subvert the constitution.
Goldberg ain’t no Coulter. And Goldberg researches her books and articles, Coulter does not appear to put much effort into research. Her chapters on ‘Darwinism’ are just appalling.

Ann Coulter, like David Brock used to, gets paid to do these books and to spread the neo-con bs.
I would like for Joe Conason and other “liberals” to understand that a lot of democrats such as myself veiw people such as Michelle Goldberg as the flip side of the same coin as Ann Coulter.
Where are you Joe Conason when Michelle Goldberg and others of her ilk make a career out of slandering christians because the neo-cons and Ann coulter use it to further their own godless causes?
Christians deserve as much respect as those “Jersey Girls”. Christians don’t deserve to be attacked and maligned and they don’t deserve to have the Goldbergs of this world putting out propaganda about them. Perhaps when “liberals” speak out against those who attack Christians and spread vile hatemongering against them then others will speak out against Coulter.
As far as I’m concerned Coulter has as much right to free speech as the asshole Michelle Goldberg. Besides Coulter’s message that the Jersey Girls silenced criticism by playing on the deaths of their loved ones is code for what Jews do in invoking “the” holocaust everytime someone wishes to complain about the fact that we were attacked on 9-11 BECAUSE OF JEWS AND ISREAL. Why doesn’t Joe Consoson, Ann coulter or the Jersey Girls ever talk about that little fact?

Regarding Comment # 11985 from “john” regarding Anne Coulter...It takes a pretty twisted and hateful mindset to actually find humor and wit in Anne Coulter’s comments about the 911 victims. And to, somehow, see attacks against Coulter’s outrageous comments about the victims of 911 as “proof that the rest of her book must be accurate” is truely the most bizzare, ignorant and dangerous kind of reasoning that any reasonable person can imagine.
It is this very kind of hateful and vindictive thinking that has polarized this country’s meaningful political debate.
I’ve got a great idea, how about all you ignorant, extremist, right wing thugs just shut the fuck up for once. You have been running this country for the last 6 or 7 years and America has never-ever been as bad off as a result of your hatred and vile contempt for anything civil.
The Karl Rovian style of attack first, think later (or don’t think at all) has absolutely ruined this country. The Bushians use 911 for political gain, and then attack the victims of 911 when they hurt your political position is just purely shameless.
America used to be a kind and compassionate country. I believe that most Americans still are. You “conservative” thugs have had your “15 minutes of fame”...it’s time to get off the stage and let the true American majority have thier say.

Sorry but I think you are full of crap. I’ve been to (pro) abortion rallies where numerous ‘post abortive’ women have talked about how GRATEFUL they were that people stood up for their right to terminate the pregnancies that they either did not want (one woman was impregnated by her uncle when she was a teenager) or could not keep (another woman was dealing with her drug addiction and facing serious jail time when she found out she was pregnant). Some of these women described the same abuses you do but in their telling the people who were screaming obscenities at them were ANTI ABORTION / PRO LIFERS, many claiming to be ‘Christians’. Worse, some of the women were physically threatened when trying to enter the clinic / doctor’s office where the abortion was to take place.
As for the following:
“Women crying for their lost children, crying over the lies they were told, their bad health, in other words the Democrat policies that robbed them of thier children, their sanity, and thier (sic) health.”
Given the economic and policy record between Bill Clinton and Bush the above is laughable. Clinton raised living standards, employment and job creation levels across the board and lowered poverty levels. Bush has done the opposite in all of the above bringing US living standards near to depression era levels. Predictably, as a result of this deepening poverty during his tenure ,abortions have actually gone up.
“But most of all we cry for this horror to end and we cry out begging America to stop killing women and children.”
Unless they’re Iraqi or Afghani women & children or American sons and dughters serving in the armed forces. 2,500 US soldiers dead, thousands permanently wounded and 10’s of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed in Iraq. Are you also crying out for an end to that horror?
If not doesn’t it hit you as hypocritical to fight so hard for the life of unborn fetuses only to toss them aside with hardly any concern once they grow up or put on a uniform ?

The lady your talking about is Madame Nhu Dinh Diem, wife of Ngo Dinh Diem, the President of the Republic of South Vietnam at the time. He & his brother, Ngo (who was head of RSVN’s securityforces) were assasinated during a coup by their army generals in 1963. The coup was approved by then US Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge and carried out with the full knowledge of the US government at the time, though they didn’t think the 2 leaders would be executed.

Personally, I think it is kind of funny to see the allegations in Ms. Coulter’s books proven on these websites. To wit, liberals never attack the facts presented, instead they attack the person presenting them through name calling, smear campaigns, and character assassination. After all, out of 281 pages in her latest book, the only thing liberals can complain about are her personal opinions of the Jersey Girls. That in itself leads me to believe that the other approximately 270 pages with no mention of them are full of facts that liberals can’t or won’t contest.

One thing not mentioned about Ann Coulter here is the total lack of any useful information in her writings. Admittedly this makes it easy for her to do research for her books since there is no significant content. Even a cursory look at her books reveals a barrage of half-truths, insults and overly broad generalizations and no real scholarship, no real look at an issue and a dissection thereof. I have to wonder about our educational system when so many people like her work which never rises above a shallow polemic.

This is the same person I believe, who lived for years (shacked up, cohabited, lived without benefit of marriage, call it what you will)with one of the greatest pornographers of our day? And this is the person now who thinks I should pay attention and learn something from her about religion and morality? I believe I’ll look elsewhere for advice about these things before turning to someone like Ann Coulter, thank you anyway. And the republican “righteous right” is so hard up for any form of a “celebrity” to take up their cause that they think this anorexic libertine is the answer? Ann Coulter is a brilliant gifted commentator on the scurrilous political theater of the Democrat party. “The New Jersey Four” aka 9-11 widows comment with vicious rhetoric on the President and our war on terrorism and then seek to hide behind their husband’s deaths when fire is returned. Particularly representative of the malevolence of Ann’s opponets and the sorry state of the political left are the comments of Mr. Page that he hopes Ann will develop a “virulent form of cancer or be horrifically beheaded”. Happily, Ann’s book is #1 on The New York Times best seller list

But most of all we cry for this horror to end and we cry out begging America to stop killing women and children.
Thousands of us now march at pro life rallies. Democrats throw bottles at us and scream insults at us as we silently march carrying signs that read “Abortion hurts women” or “My Abortion hurt me” or “I regret my Abortion” We also carry flowers for our dead children.
If anyone in America has a “right” to speak about Abortion it is us, the women who have been there done that. Yet Democrats want to silence us.
Since I came out of the “abortion closet” three years ago these are some of the comments I have personally heard from Democrats:
“ I am glad your baby is dead”
“You deserved what you got”
“They should have killed your other baby too”
“I don’t care about you or your baby”
So much for the “compassionate Democrat” party.

Don’t forget Rudy Giuliani. He has identified himself so closely with 9/11 that you cannot think of one without the other. Yet, all we here from him is silence. Coulters logic about benifiting from 9/11 rings true. Not, however for the Jersey Girls, but definetly for Giuliani. On 9/10/01 he was one of the most unpopular politicians in the country with his marital problems, philandering, trouble with NYC unions, etc. One can easily make the argument that 9/11 was the best thing that ever happened to him.
