Robert Scheer: DeLays Mission ContinuesPosted on Jun 13, 2006What a pity that Tom DeLay gave up his congressional seat just when things were going so well. Reading the list of political achievements he recited in his farewell speech to thunderous applause from his GOP colleagues, one is perplexed as to why he is walking away from it all. Surely the FBI agents and Texas prosecutors who are hounding him following the guilty pleas of former top DeLay associates are unaware that he is doing the Lord’s work? ” . . . God is my witness and history is my judge,” DeLay proclaimed dramatically, insisting he has at all times acted “honorably and honestly.” Modestly placing himself in the company of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln, he celebrated his engineering of the destruction of wicked liberalism by any means necessary. One was left to wonder why a claimant of such stellar achievement and praise from on high should have come to so fear the judgment of the lowly voters in his own district that he withdrew from his reelection race. Couldn’t he have just smooth-talked them into believing that when he took all that money from oil and gambling hustlers he was once again doing the Lord’s work? “I did a good job,” DeLay told the House of Representatives on Thursday. Advertisement DeLay was the point man, but his rackets, so basic to the success of the modern Republican Party, will continual to churn without his guidance. Despite a slew of indictments and plea bargains for the DeLay clique—including Jack Abramoff, “one of my closest and dearest friends”—the corporate lobbyists should not be overly saddened by his departure. After all, as DeLay pointed out, “my good friend and my most trusted partner and colleague,” House Speaker Denny Hastert, is still in charge to carry on DeLay’s noble work. Since Hastert welcomed this most recent DeLay embrace, might we not also assume that he too favors the influence-peddling run out of the D.C. house that served as DeLay’s office, by current and former members of his staff? What is the born-again East Texas Christian word for chutzpah? Whatever you call it, DeLay displayed enormous amounts when he, a GOP party boss who long fought for the expansion of federal government influence over all areas of Americans’ private lives up to and including when to pull the plug on brain-dead relatives, castigated liberals for wanting “more control over people’s lives and decisions.” Speaking of religion, DeLay was not at a loss for pious words in his speech, none of them contrite. Never mind that one of his uglier schemes saw him teaming up with ex-Christian Coalition leader Ralph Reed to exploit the anti-gambling passions of some good Christian folk to aid the gambling schemes of a particular Indian tribe that gave him and Reed money by the truckload. They also worked to get billions in U.S. aid for the Russian oil mafia and exemption from U.S. labor laws for Pacific Island sweatshop owners. That might appear sleazy to some secular liberals, but DeLay remains confident that as the top congressional wheeler-dealer he was always acting in the service of the Lord: “In this House, I found my life’s calling and my soul’s savior.” He also stated “this is a happy day for me,” calling to mind that surreal grin he beamed in his now infamous mug shot. But isn’t it strange that he would be so happy to give up his life’s calling? Of course, it is possible that DeLay is a bit confused on the religious implications of his work in Congress given that he has been denied the services of his onetime spiritual advisor and chief of staff, Edwin A. Buckham. Buckham, who headed the U.S. Family Network, which mostly aided his and DeLay’s families, is now the subject of inquiries by the FBI. His lobbying firm carried DeLay’s wife, Christine, on its payroll and overall is credited with funneling more than a half million bucks to the DeLay family—including a recently revealed pension account created for Mrs. DeLay. So that’s what they mean by family values! In his farewell, DeLay did not refer to his family’s legal complications but went out of his way to celebrate his wife’s work on behalf of foster children. Sounds like a future sentencing plea bargain to me.

I have wondered how these born-again christians can find any idenity with Jesus, who lived with the sick, insane, poor, females, downtrodden peoples,: the bottom up approach. Completely opposite from this administration that rules from the top down: in fact it seems to have no interest in the same types of people that Christ worked with, helped, cured, and brought back to life. As for the culture of death that the Republicans decry (abortion), what do you label people who believe, promote, and practice capitol punishment and the killing of Arabs (Iraqis?

Mike Wilson, take heart. With the Chandlers and The Tribune at each other’s throats, there may yet be a new owner of the LA Times. I’m sure that Bob Scheer would be the first to have his column reinstated.

Delay displays the darker side of human nature. History has a way of repeating itself through time.Who is more a threat to are basic freedoms , are enemies or are protecters?

Another interesting tidbit (thanks to Juanita @ http://www.brazosriver.com ) - Delay’s wife will be maintaining residence in TX while he is allegedly currently a resident in VA. I know I’m a bit off topic, but geez! it’s always something with these people.

In one of his “farewell” speeches he also stated the “liberals ruin everything.” Here is what this crooked republican lapdog meant:
What he is really saying is: “Your majesty, were it not for the liberals we:”
Would not have gotten bogged down in Iraq…
Could have completed our illegal telephone tapping program without the people knowing it…
Would not have converted a budget surplus into a record budget deficit…
Would not have increased the national debt to epic proportions, with you being the principal contributor…
Would not have had to leak information to protect your butt…
Would not have converted a most trusted nation into the most distrusted nation…
Would not have had to trample on the constitution with all those signing statements…
Could have completed all our illegal programs despite that “goddamned piece of paper”...
And, your majesty, well….there is more, but…..
Your majesty, most of this probably goes over your head, but maybe, just maybe, some of it gets past your crown and into your limited understanding, but count on me to stay in contact from my new cell as time goes on.
Your loyal, rabid right wing, subject, Tom

Political perversion in the name of God and religion leaves me struggling uncomfortably with feelings of hatred of government.
Report thisAre there some good guys in congress that we could hear about that would balance my blistered ears and stimulate some admiration, gratitude and respect, is there anyone in congress that promotes alternative renewable energy generation as an alternative to slaughter and environmental disaster?
Is there anyone watching the “development” of the Alberta tar sands, currently described in America as second only to Saudi Arabia and “right in our own back yard”? I guess that makes Mexico our “front yard”. So much for sovereign nation neighbors.
Hey I know energy is the currency of prosperity but lets not try to get there by robbing the bank, (our neighbors bank at that).

The problem is, it’s not just DeLay. All of these so-called christians (small “c”) think the same way. Truth is, they wouldn’t know Jesus if they met him on a street corner, and he wouldn’t know them either. Real Christians don’t brag about their faith, they simply live it.

i don’t understand how so many people can support the criminal cabal which is the ruling regime in this country; one nation readily and entirely divisible because of the disingenuous godliness it touts. the power of willful ignorance is astonishing. i rely on truthdig to observe and expose hucksters like delay, hastert, reed, et al. would that more people paid attention to, and cared about the venality and criminality they could not help but see.

Dear Robert,
I find it disturbing that, as a liberal I cannot bridge the chasm between my way of thinking and that of the conservative Christian who thinks people like DeLay are so wonderful. How have we become so divided? I have always prided myself at being able to wear the other’s shoes, but here I can’t and it disturbes me. If anyone has any insights…

The arrogance is amazing. The gall is amazing. The twisting of truth into a pretzel is amazing. The former roach killer knows no shame. Like a general standing in the middle of his own dead soldiers, with a pall of black smoke hanging over his head and a white flag in hand, he still claims total victory for his cause, his God. I need to meet this right-wing God, ask him to teach me the ways of making corruption sound like benevolence. Amazing.
