Molly Ivins: Hope, Hope, Hoping Along in IraqPosted on Jun 12, 2006By Molly Ivins AUSTIN, Texas—Iraq and the media, the media and Iraq—over and over. Last week was supposed to be a good media week for Iraq—Abu Musab al Zarqawi was dead. Taken out, we said, by a combination of American and Iraqi troops with Jordanian intelligence. The churlish might note this was the second time the American military had announced Zarqawi’s death—but, hey, we’ve announced the capture of Osama’s No. 2 guy at least seven or eighth times. Others claimed Zarqawi was never that important to begin with, indeed had been built up by our side. Still, that’s a goal for our side, as they say in World Cup play. Then reality got a bit bumpy. Zarqawi wasn’t exactly dead when we found him. We put him on a stretcher and cleaned him up—the fog of war intervened. I distinctly remember people predicting the first time we killed Zarqawi that it wouldn’t make much difference, so I presume they did it again. Thus, we get to revisit the old cackle over whether we are fighting international terrorists who have flocked to Iraq or a native uprising against our occupation of the country. Can’t even agree on what’s going on. I’m so used to one side saying this and the other side saying the opposite that I didn’t even blink over the differences. I did, however, come to a screeching halt over the right’s reaction to news of a triple suicide at Guantanamo. A great chorus of “How dare they?” seemed to follow this dismal news. My local paper said, “Detainees hid their plans to die. ... Guantanamo officials were fooled. ... Inquiry looks at how to prevent other deaths.” Now it seems to me one might have any number of reactions to news of suicides at Guantanamo, but righteous indignation is not one of them. Most of these prisoners have been held for four years now without possibility of charge, trial or parole. I should think they would be suicidal. I’m sorry we failed to prevent it, but I’m not sure that’s possible. They hid their plans to die? Gee, the sneaks. You know what? This is getting silly. The debate over this war is unrealistic and even ludicrous. (A) It is not going well. (B) It keeps getting worse. (C) Yes, it is possible that if we stay there long enough, it will get better eventually. (D) There is nothing suggesting that beyond hope. A particularly acrid growth from this fruitless debate is the contempt for and dismissal of public opinion in other countries. “So what if we have alienated public opinion in nations throughout the Middle East?” seems to be the attitude. “Who cares what they think?” If I wanted to win a global war on terror, I’d sure be concerned about what they think. I would hope the right would at least be concerned over the damage being done to the American military by this war. Morale, my ass. Excuse me, but our government doesn’t even seem to be able to pay these people on time. Not to mention stretching them past the breaking point in Iraq, leaving them without adequate mental care when they come home, endlessly extending their tours, bribing them to re-up, and so forth and so on. Then, of course, something like Haditha happens, and they all get a black eye out of it. I think it’s time the antiwar side in this country started using a few threats of its own—specifically, about who’s going to take the blame for this when it’s over. Forget the liberal tradition of forgiveness. I say hold this grudge. Since George Bush and Junta came to power, I felt always irritated at the mention of Texas which produced such a third rate politician and first rate liar to become the United States president. Only recently that feeling subsided after reading more and more of the Texan Molly Ivins thougtful writings and analysis. She is indeed a first rate thinker and humanist, and I practicaly savor reading every line of her writings. So, okay texas; no more hard feelings; you produced one of the worst and you balanced it with Molly Ivins, one of the best. The bad Texans can have their bad guy, only for a while, and the whole nation hopefully can have Molly Ivins for keeps.

Depleted Uranium is much more dangerous for both the Iraqi people and our soldiers than Zarqawi ever was!
Dr Jawad Al-Ali, an Iraqi oncologist trained in the U.K. said:
“Our studies indicate that more than forty percent of the population around Basra will get cancer.
Dr. Al-Ali (55), director of the Oncology Center at the largest hospital in Basra, Iraq stated, at a recent ( 2003) conference in Japan:
Two strange phenomena have come about in Basra which I have never seen before. The first is double and triple cancers in one patient. For example, leukemia and cancer of the stomach. We had one patient with 2 cancers - one in his stomach and kidney. Months later, primary cancer was developing in his other kidney—he had three different cancer types. The second is the clustering of cancer in families. We have 58 families here with more than one person affected by cancer. Dr Yasin, a general Surgeon here has two uncles, a sister and cousin affected with cancer. Dr Mazen, another specialist, has six family members suffering from cancer. My wife has nine members of her family with cancer.
Children in particular are susceptible to DU poisoning. They have a much higher absorption rate as their blood is being used to build and nourish their bones and they have a lot of soft tissues. Bone cancer and leukemia used to be diseases affecting them the most, however, cancer of the lymph system which can develop anywhere on the body, and has rarely been seen before the age of 12 is now also common.,
Nine family members with cancer? 40%?
Everyone breathes dust. We’ve made an entire nation unsafe and unhealthy for further habitation. Go to vitaltruths.blogsource.com for further info.

If one looks at the price of oil since the invasion, it becomes obvious why these guys are doing what they are doing. They stuck a stick into the beehive to make the price of honey rise. In geopolitical terms, this helps ‘us’ (read ‘our corporations’), because we get a smaller percentage of our oil from the middle east than the Europeans and Asians. Also, the guys who own the oil here, ie, rich Texas oil guys (who are the ones who put dubbya into power) are now getting $70 for a barrel, instead of the $5 they would have been getting had Gore and his Global Warming Cabal been running things. Anybody else believe profit is a motive to rig an election or three?

And let us not forget when the socialists come to power and make slaves of all of us that the dhimmicrats were helping them all along.
The “war” in Iraq was over along time ago. It is now an occupation. The purpose of which is to manipulate the price of oil.
You all cry that so many are dying in this “war”. Hell, it is just a drop in the bucket compared to Vietnam. We lose more military personnel to automobile accidents daily. And, hello, who put us in Vietnam? Could it have been the dhimmicrats?
Both parties suck, Molly just says what is popular to say, she has no true beliefs other than making a buck from her writing. Don’t think so? Just read all of her columns through the years and watch her flip flop. Example, Molly once wrote the only times this country has had a depression was when we tried to reduce the national debt. She thinks that debt is good for the country, unless it is the republicans doing it. She’s a two faced muck raker only concerned about making a buck. Just like all the rest of the people involved in politics (poly - many, tics - blood sucking creatures)....

Perhaps you unaware that it was Ronald Reagan who armed Saddam even afer Saddam had killed his own people and that Bush41/Cheney kept up the policy which also included ARMING OSAMA. Furthermore when the people of Iraq rose up against Saddam in 91 and had captured terrority- they were turned down by Bush41/Cheney. In 91 Cheney gave a speech which is on the web why it was NOT a good idea to depose Saddam and those reasons were just as valid when we did invade Iraq.
Report thisNow if you care for the soldiers like you claim why in the hell would you be backing a President that sent young people off to die without ENOUGH TROOPS, without ENOUGH Arms, without an occupation plan or an exit plan.

A van with the Repug loud speaker will pass by before the midterms and remind them to vote for the good guys or the bad guys will get them and off they will march to pull the leaver before taking up positions perched back by the mail box anxiously waiting for the rich to reward them.
The American dream died long ago. It was not as sensational a story as the congressional crotch watch stories that now pass for mainstream news, therefore it made page C-17.

Every time I see some knuckle-dragger mention that we WILL win the war in Iraq, I wonder what exactly that means. After all…we went there, we were told (though the Bushies didn’t believe it), because of the WMD. Then it was because Saddam gassed his people (nobody mentioned with gas we supplied him and as we watched). Then it was to “bring democracy” (though I admit I will never understand how killing people in their own country has anything to do with bringing them democracy). Throw in there what der Fuehrer said before it started…that if Saddam left, we would not invade (which seems to indicated overthrowing him was the objective, but who really knows after 3, 4, or 5 “objectives”). So…of those reasons, the only one that remotely resembles why we went there was to get rid of that huge (non)-threat Saddam. The troops did that. So, why are they still there? Or maybe someone can tell me what exactly our “plan” is. I, honestly, don’t know. If someone can answer the question: “Victory will be when…” and it’s a real reason, I will jump on the bandwagon, but until then, NOT! (Oh, and please, no more “to fight terrorism.” The terrorists, to the extent there are any, are there BECAUSE of our presence.

The point is that you can’t have a war on “terrorism.” It’s a tactic, not a political credo. From the point of view of the side that would bear comparison to the US in iraq, in a certain conflict of about 230 years ago, Ethan Allen was a “terrrorist” as well as an “insurgent.” And what was John Brown? Manachem Begin? I will note that most of us opposed to the war were opposed before the fact because we knew that the reasons for going over were all lies, and perhaps before people who still support this insanity throw stones they should admit that the government who lead the charge lied repeatedly about WMD’s, the threat posed by Saddam, his links to what they call “terrorists,” etc. THEN you’ll perceive the weakness in the argument for staying the course until the mess we caused has been cleaned up, which on the face of it does have a certain moral logic. Does anyone think that the same gang who dishonestly led us into this quagmire with is EVER going to tell us what their agenda for staying really is? And don’t you imbeciles even understand that this war has made the threat of terrorism fifty times greater than it was before we started it? You make people hate you then blame those who warn you what will happen when it does. What insanity! The ones whose rhetoric fuel terrrorism are the ones who show the world we don’t respect Islamic culture and want to make everyone in the world do our bidding. Terroism is the direct result of such a stance and you can NEVER keep a few fanatics from proving it until you stop doing the things that you shouldn’t be doing in the first place. Too hard to follow?

Now you’re talking!
Personally, I call Karl Rove and Ann Coulter the frothing pimple set of the Neocon wing (the wing nuts) of the Republican Party ... labeled from memories of my Junior High days way back when (I was born before WWII, for chrissakes.)
But I really, really like to call attention to your style of writing. I even bookmark a few examples like yours to quickly display when I want to show friends, family ... even strangers down at the local Starbucks (by the way, I lived in Seattle for 25 years, and Seattle Best Coffee has better coffee, but worse service ... kinda like McDonald’s as Starbucks and Burger King as SBC per my grandson when I used to take him out for burgers ... who is now grown up with two kids of his own ... but I digress ... us old geezers can lose track pretty easy when we’re just sitting around swapping stories)
Anyway, down at the local Starbucks I simply give you a little intro, like, “Here’s another example of a Neocon front person ... another one who wants to ride in the rich kid’s limo to the graduation party,”, click on the bookmark, and voilé! laughs all around.
Your comment, “Your whiny ass, crybaby opinion is noted, thanks for playing, now STFU already,” is kind of classic Neocon style now that their brilliant ideas are being flushed down the commode.
I thank you.

I’m confused how anyone can think with the war going on as horrendously as it is that we should pull out and watch Iraq turn into another Lebanese civil war for 20 years?
How do you think the Middle East will view us THEN?
Yes, we would all like to bring the troops home and/or reverse the decision to invade, but if you advocate pulling out the U.S. troops now your are sentancing both the Iraqi people and any shred of legitimacy America has or can have in the region to death.
Vietnam is unfortunately not a viable case study. The majority of Iraqi’s WANT the American backed government to work, they just don’t want to get blown up on their way to work by the plethora of bomegrown and foreign insurgents on their way to work.
Advocates of true American liberalism value Iraqi life as much as American life. Since our death toll is not near theirs, supporting pull out without increased stability in the region (yes our military is one of the few things keeping it from all out civil war) is simply cowardice.
This gives rise to Osama Bin Laden’s “American’s can’t stand to see their own blood” and fuels terrorist ideology, as WELL as the conservative false belief that liberals are soft and don’t have guts in times of turmoil (which probably landed us here in the first place).

I’m an American who emigrated to Australia last December because my wife and I could no longer stomach being tax-paying parts of the killing machine. Lucky for us, I’m a registered nurse so I could get a work visa. I’m always amazed at how all the Aussies I meet, from ridgy-didge Anglo-stock ockers, to the Italians and Greeks who came here after WW II, to the newest Vietnamese and Middle Eastern immigrants, regard the U.S. America is feared even here, in a country that models itself after the U.S. It’s like a formerly favourite uncle who turned out to be a child molester. Have no fear Molly, the Republicans are on the case! Via Josh Marshal at TPM via Roll Call the Republicans will solve all Iraq problems by spending the better part of this very Thursday talking about a Republican Iraq resolution, cool, way cool, should be a winner.
The resolution goes on to emphasize the importance of fighting terrorism and says that Saddam Hussein “constituted a threat against global peace and security.” The language also refers to Iraq and Afghanistan as two parts of the same fight.
As you can see the Republicans are still fighting Saddam and they can count all the way up to two, Iraq = one, Afghanistan = two. Some day the Republicans will notice they actually have ten fingers and we will see some real progress.
From the New York Times via A Tiny Revolution (Jonathan Schwartz),
Military officials on Saturday suggested that the three suicides were a form of a coordinated protest.
“They are smart, they are creative, they are committed,” Admiral Harris said. “They have no regard for life, neither ours nor their own. I believe this was not an act of desperation, but an act of asymmetrical warfare waged against us.”
The warbling admirable Admiral Harris really puts a fine point on it with asymmetrical warfare. They were in prison with no hope of getting out and yet they were still waging not only war against us but asymmetrical warfare to boot obviously they have no regard for what is fair and right like the admirable Admiral Harris.
I will hazard a guess that being smart, creative and committed will probably not be part of the Republican resolution on Iraq this coming Thursday or any other day.

On the other hand, there are all those mercenaries doing black ops for whoever the hell we are outsourcing the most henious stuff to. Think there are enough of them to do the job?
Keep your prayers high. They are not nearly finished with us yet.

Crawford, Texas seems an excellent place to begin the war crimes trials.

Thank you Molly. America ought to be proud of you for having the guts to say things as they are. You bring credit to Texas common sense just when I had finally given up on it ever again seeing the light of day.
And yes, isn’t it just those people most likely to be adjudged guilty of fomenting this mess who themselves are so gung-ho about everyone else paying even unto death penalty, the price of their sins and errors and downright criminal actions? Where is justice tempered with mercy in their vocabulary?
I watch movies portraying antisocial mental psycopaths who invariably get upset when their turn comes to pay the piper. I always wonder when the voting majority will get the message and demonstrate democracy at work at home.

Golly Miz Molly.
Here you are on truthdig an’ nobody done commented. That’s ‘cuz you make good sense an’ people that come here DO hold a grudge for that pack o’lies, biggern a Repug Elephant, that has caused so many deaths. George of Arabia calls hisself Christian and says that God tole him to do these things. I think he had a bad connection with the wrong party.

Go-Molly-Go !
This Bush-generated “War” is to be the right-wingNuts joke on all middle-class Americans—For it is to be the destruction of the middle-class itself! Run the national debt into infinity and excuse the wealthiest from taxation and let the little folks go broke scrambling to keep up!—Pretty good formula for ruination.
ARE YOU GOING TO BE A “HAVE” OR A “HAVE NOT”?!!
This administration, ALL OF THEM, should be tried for treason and war crimes!!!
Keep punching Molly! Maybe one of these days, soon I hope, America will wake up and take BACK this country. . . “Hope springs eternal”!

Now you’re talking, Molly!
Let’s have some of that good ol’ accountability. I mean these right wingers are always talking about people accepting responsibility for their acts ... like in “if you can’t do the time, then don’t do the crime.”
I’m all for it.
These Neocons are so scared right now ... they’re going to try to steal one election too many. What else can they do? If the people ever get subpoena power back in Congress, the Neocons and their cohorts are headed to prison ... and they know it.
They’re already squirming.
Trouble is, the Democrats are wringing their hands as if they’re afraid of the people, too.
You know, if our Constitution survives this debacle (what I call the frothing of the pimple set, ‘cuz the tactics are straight out of the junior high bullies’ instruction manual), we’ll know “we the people” REALLY have something going for us.
