Truthdigger of the Week: Ray McGovern

From prisonplanet.com

Former CIA analyst and heroic Rumsfeld antagonist Ray McGovern

Truthdig salutes Ray McGovern, the 27-year CIA veteran who articulated the outrage of a nation by publicly and heroically challenging Donald Rumsfeld’s lies about Iraqi WMD at an Atlanta public forum on May 4.

The populist hero is our Truthdigger of the Week.

You can follow any of the links below to get a full picture of the man, the encounter and the dust-up he left in his wake.

But if you want a little dessert before eating your vegetables, check out McGovern’s account of a cheeky piece of anti-Rumsfeld propaganda he came upon at the Atlanta forum. It was distributed by The World Can’t Wait, an organization dedicated to driving President Bush from office.

“[W]hen I walked into the place, I wrangled a ticket very surreptitiously. I was met with this little blurb on Donald Rumsfeld, and as I read it, I had to chuckle. It says:

There’s going to be a question-and-answer period, but please adhere to these guidelines. Refrain from using the word ‘lie’ in relation to the war in Iraq. Do not question the secretary’s personal responsibility for torture. And please don’t discuss first use of nuclear weapons against Iran. If you violate these guidelines, you’ll be immediately removed from the auditorium, flown to an undesignated prison location somewhere in Eastern Europe and tortured. Thank you for your cooperation. The World Can’t Wait.

A wonderful, wonderful group. Those were the folks that spoke up and tried to brace Donald Rumsfeld with the lies and their charges of him being—and he is, arguably—a war criminal. And we shouldn’t shy away from saying that.”

ok, yeah, i listened recently to a seminar of sorts by Raymond McGovern, on free speech TV.  he was speaking at The John Marshall Law School, in Chicago.  I was wondering if anyone has found a word form of what he said?  i was watching it with my Dad, and we were reall confused, considering i am only 16 and unable to fully understand everything he was talking about.  I got the Gist of it, but its somethingi want to write a school paper on, because its so fascinating.  if anyone finds anything out, please e-mail me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Rummy brought up the fact that Saddam was a horrible man who even killed his own people. Yet nobody asked Rummy why even after Saddam killed his own people that Rummy went on the behalf of Ronnie to beg the nasty bastard to help us against Iran. And why would the great Ronnie arm Saddam a policy continued by Bush41/Cheney who also armed Osama thereby helping the terrorists we now face.
And why if as a speech on the web by Cheney in 91 we didn’t depose Saddam because they weren’t sure who would follow him and why did that change

Ray is great, and if you can, you have the opportunity to support him and the quest for truth on May 18 in DC.  Go to afterdowningstreet.org and look for David Swanson’s story.  They are going to present the dontattackiran.org petition to the Whitehouse and then go to Rummy’s house!!!  There are some things happening before it, maybe around 1:00.

Go if you can!

oh, and there is a great interview with him on buzzflash!

It always amazes me when I ask people if they ever heard of the “Project For a New American Century”.
I always get a dumbfounded expression, they never heard of it. Rumsfeld according to Kristol is not a member, but he has signed many of their letters.
Frankly these people are NUTS and the control GWB.
Colbert did an interview with Kristol and questioned him on how the “project” was going, he was completely caught off guard.
Read their paper “Rebuilding America’s Defenses”
It is all out in the open and the medial operates
with their eyes wide shut. The following is a few excerpts from the report. http://www.newarmericancentury.org

From the Project For a New American Century:
Project Participants:
I.Lewis Libby (Dechert Price & Rhoads)
Paul Wolfowitz (Nitze School Of Advanced International Studies)

“Further, the process of transformation, even if it produces revolutionary
change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor.”

“And advanced forms of biological warfare that can “target” specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a
political useful tool.”

“Future soldiers may operate in encapsulated, climate-controlled, powered fighting suits, laced with sensors, and boasting chameleon-like “active camouflage. “Skin-patch” pharmaceuticals help regulate fears, focus concentration and enhance endurance and strength.”

Apparently, lying is not that bad a thing if the reasons for lying are good, i.e. overthrowing Saddam. THAT is what many Americans ended up believing…. “Yeah, well, um, ah…. Saddam was bad! Saddam was bad!”

I have been calling Rumsfeld, Donald “We Know Where They Are” Rumsfeld ever since the day I saw him say that on C-SPAN. Remember also that Rumsfeld said once that dictionary definitions do not matter, only to later be seen holding up a dictionary defending his use of the word “Slog.”

Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld are pathological in that they are spiraling down a path of lying to cover-up lie after lie after lie after lie…. This is the world’s most watched “Caught On Tape” television show.

However, there are reasons why their lies do not get frontpage coverage.

First, there are enough people in power and in control of the MSM that, even though may know of the lies, are in aggreement with the general Bush Doctrine of “spreading democracy”. To them, it does not matter that they lie, for the ends justifies the means.

Then there are a hundred and fifty million Americans who are simply ignorant. We call these people, “Christian.”

Then there are those of the MSM who can control who and what issues gets coverage, what films get distributed, what voices get heard. Political leaning films and documentaries simply do not get on the air!

Do you think that Ray McGovern will get much more air time over the next month? Ha!

“....Where and when will the mainstream media wake up and challenge the crap that is fed to them by this administration.”

But the mainstream media is wide awake just to serve the interests of its industrial backers.

A war will provide the easiest justification for huge government contracts and Congress is ever ready to make available huge funds for wartime contracts.

Mainstram media propaganda makes an illegal war look legal and its patriotic cant drives Americans to sacrifice their sons willingly.  Mainstream media is thus the Sales organisation of the War Industry. Have no doubts about that!

Even aside from the OSP Rumsfeld’s Defense Department
controls 80 percent of the entire intelligence budget and has
intelligence agencies within each individual service, Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines etc.
The specific issue of locating and targeting WMD sites and mobile units inside Iraq would have been the responsibility of the Army National Ground Intelligence Center not the CIA.
No such “WMD TARGETS” were ever identified by Rumsfeld’s intelligence people and no specially trained WMD units were requested by Rumsfeld or the White House to be included in the invasion plan to sieze and guard “WMD SITES” because presumably everyone knew there was no WMD to guard.
It was also known that no Iraqi forces had been trained in the use of WMDs since 1991 so they could have used them even if they had them.

I just get depressed when vets who should know better get up and beat the War drums.  If they had made true sacrifices then they wouldn’t support this administration and its lies.  The loss of life should at least have the honor of serving a purpose not supporting the lies of Haliburton and the Saudi Royal Family or fight conflicts that should be fought by Israel like our Saber ratttling to Iran these days.

Your dignity and calm spoke with clarity concerning your motive and concern.  It was really, really impressive.  Plus, it was a good example to all American viewers that it is possible to question authority and expect answers. It is possible to do that with propriety and true Christian values.  Thank you.  You reminded us that we can be a principled people and that we can have a voice, a right and a duty to speak against lies and deceit, and wrongful acts.  Again, I say thank you.

Hey R.A. Earl,

I share your incredulity regarding the inertia of the majority of Americans in the face of the most incompetent and dishonest admin. in at least 100 years.  But if you look at Sam Harris’ Atheist Manifesto also on this site, you’ll recognize that the overhwhelming majority of Americans are delusional in many ways, including believing in the God that wrote the bible.  People found it much easier and satisfying to condemn Clinton because what he did was a SIN!  As long as GWB continues with his retarded piousness about how he prays to God for guidance, he and the Repubs will continue to rule, no matter how many soldiers and civilians are killed or how many hundreds of billions of dollars are wasted.  I meet lots of sheeple out there who will not change their minds about GWB no matter what.  It’s a pathetic situation and will lead us to ruin - and maybe take the whole planet down with us.

World Can’t Wait is a great group, they are doing so much to educate people about the truth of this awful, criminal administration. Everyone should check out their website and sign their call to action, they have chapters across the nation if you’d like to get involved. It’s good to see big names like McGovern joining them and speaking out. Rumsfeld should be heckled like this every single time he makes an appearance; World Can’t Wait is trying to make that happen.

Ray McGovern also is speaking as a part of a campus tour sponsored by World Can’t Wait called “Speaking the Unspeakable: Is the Bush Administration Guilty of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity?”, which is stopping at colleges nation wide. It’s a fantastic event with powerful speakers; find out more at this link:

It escapes me how uninvolved our so called journalists are in actually bringing anything to the attention of the American people that isn’t a sniveling nod of the head to everything this administration is doing.  They are as quilty of sinking this country to the depths it is heading as those in this joke of a government are.  In fact, they are definitely doing an effective job of it.  When more people wake up, more will respond, I feel sure of that.

Yes, Henny Penny, the sky is falling ... this time ... on G.W.

I think MSM talking-heads like Paula Zahn, Tim Russert, and Chris Matthews are going to be dancing on quicksand up until the fall election.

I mean, what if they tell the truth and not just truthiness ... and then the Neocon cabal pulls off an October surprise ... who will they get to interview then? They must be sweating bullets.

It seemed like a planned photo-op, the room was stacked with “Rumsfeld supporters”  who cheered when the “crazy liberal hecklers” were removed, and booed anyone who questioned the integrity of our proud defense secretary.  Until McGovern spoke it all seemed staged to show how the majority of the room stood by Rumsfeld.  What they didn’t count on was an informed CIA insider, a man who knows exactly what was going on, exposing Rumsfeld’s lies with his own words.  McGovern was simply brilliant.

Why isn’t some one putting together a documentary done in Bush’s and Rummy’s own words followed-up by the FACTs?
Some thing along the lines of Ed Murrow’s TV show on Senator Joe McCarthy would be wonderful.  Sort of a Michael Moore documentary but made by a generally accepted truthful and bi-partisan respected person.
Wouldn’t the truth shown by putting Bush’s and Rummy’s own actual statements with a follow-up of what truly happened (were they correct of not) give people a “wake-up call” FINALLY???
Why isn’t this being done by some one????

Rumsfeld to Ray McGovern:

Well, first of all, I haven’t lied. I did not lie then. Colin Powell didn’t lie. He spent weeks and weeks with the Central Intelligence Agency people and prepared a presentation that I know he believed was accurate, and he presented that to the United Nations. The president spent weeks and weeks with the central intelligence people and he went to the american people and made a presentation.  I’m not in the intelligence business. They gave the world their honest opinion. It appears that there were not weapons of mass destruction there. [emphasis mine]

In fact, per the Wikipedia:

The Office of Special Plans, which existed from September, 2002, to June, 2003, was a Pentagon unit created by Donald Rumsfeld and led by Douglas Feith, dealing with intelligence on Iraq.

In an interview with the Scottish Sunday Herald, former CIA officer Larry C. Johnson said the OSP was “dangerous for US national security and a threat to world peace. [The OSP] lied and manipulated intelligence to further its agenda of removing Saddam.

So, Rumsfeld lied when he said he knew where the weapons of mass destruction were.  He lied again when he said he hadn’t said that.  He lied again when he said that he’s not in the intelligence business—in fact, he set up an intelligence unit, the OSP, exactly to manufacture and spread the lies that led us to war in Iraq, the very lies he is now denying.  But what else would you expect from George W. Bush’s Secretary of Defense, who once was Ronald Reagan’s personal ambassador to Saddam Hussein?

Things seems clear enough.

Rumsfeld lied.

McGovern exposed those lies in no uncertain terms to the entire world.

It doesn’t matter.

For some reason that completely escapes me, the nation that went completely berzerk over an insignificant, irrelevant sexual service provided to Bill Clinton, cannot or will not take any effective action to impeach GWB and his administration for either being the most incompetent and stupid group of politicians ever to hold office, or for being out-and-out war criminals.

It seems clear that in the USA you can get away with anything just so long as you refrain from appearing to be a sexually active person. I mean, can ANYONE imagine GWB, naked in a sexual tryst? Just the thought numbs my libido.
