Robert Scheer: ‘Anti-Christian Conspirators’ Slay DeLayPosted on Apr 4, 2006
Blame it on the vast anti-Christian conspiracy. That was the explanation offered by U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas and his supporters last week for the whirlpool of legal difficulties that finally led the ex-leader of the Republicans in Congress to admit it was time to call it quits. The convener of a “War on Christians” conference held in the nation’s capital outrageously depicted the former House majority leader’s political plight as the unwarranted crucifixion of a Christ-like leader by God-haters. And, with his trademark gall, the infamously ethically challenged DeLay eagerly embraced this explanation when it was his turn to speak to the adoring crowd. “We have been chosen to live as Christians at a time when our culture is being poisoned and our world is being threatened,” thundered the Texan pest-control entrepreneur who rose to become one of America’s most powerful politicians. “The enemies of virtue may be on the march, but they have not won.” Let’s leave aside for a moment the absurdity of right-wing Christians’ persecution complex at a time when their adherents effectively control all three branches of the federal government. What’s even more confusing is how so many enemies of virtue seem to have had a field day operating under poor DeLay’s auspices, including the latest member of his staff to plead guilty to a felony. That would be Tony Rudy, DeLay’s former deputy chief of staff, who has now pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge for accepting payments from fellow criminal Jack Abramoff while serving in DeLay’s office, and later working to corrupt public officials and defraud clients. To be fair to DeLay, it should be noted that as absurd as his religious posturing may appear, it comes at a time when he has been denied the services of his onetime spiritual adviser and former chief of staff. Edwin Buckham, an evangelical minister who turned lobbyist after leaving DeLay’s staff, is himself now mired in potential legal problems stemming from Rudy’s plea bargain. A devastating article by R. Jeffrey Smith in the Washington Post last week reported that Buckham and his wife received a total of nearly a million bucks from the “nonprofit” U.S. Family Network, which he created as a front group largely funded by clients of Abramoff. Advertisement Dizzy yet? It gets worse, much worse. Despite its alleged focus on protecting American families, the Family Network’s lobbying instead found success in securing DeLay’s political support of Russian oil profiteers, sweatshop operators in the U.S. protectorate of the Northern Marianas, and American Indian gambling casinos afraid of competition. It’s a peculiar record for an organization launched with the stated purpose of pushing policies to advance “families, the economic prosperity, social improvement, moral fitness, and general well being of the United States.” But perhaps DeLay and his underlings just have a different interpretation of what “it” is when it comes to “moral fitness.” After all, DeLay did argue publicly that allowing textile manufacturers in the Marianas to sew in “Made In the USA” labels while not having to follow our labor and immigration laws was the moral thing to do. And when Abramoff, recipient of more than $7 million in lobbying fees from the Marianas government, managed to get him to visit, DeLay took the opportunity not only to call Abramoff “one of my closest and dearest friends,” he also cast the sweatshop owners’ cause—protecting their right to cheap imported Chinese labor—in a Christian framework. “Stand firm,” Delay urged them at a dinner hosted by a major sweatshop company, as he promised to protect their profitable loophole from any corrective legislation. “Resist evil. Remember that all truth and blessings emanate from our Creator.” What is still unclear, however, is how, if DeLay really fears the judgment of his creator, can he be so cavalier in assuming he will get an eternal pass on this despicable behavior? Ironically, DeLay described the Mariana Islands as a perfect example of Republican principles at work. They conned young Chinese and other Asian girls to work there, then kept most of them behind barbed wires, but the prettier girls were forced into prostitution, and when they became pregnant, forced into abortions. This was in the small print of their contracts. Republican values in this centiry.

Delay’s diety is angry, judgemental and all powerful. That is why Delay is so comfortable with himself. Delay has not been enriching himself, he’s been raising money to fund the holy war. His goal is to form a Christian state, run by true believers and the rest of us can go to hell. Or perhaps he might do it personally depending upon what god tells him.

The old cliche said that money is the root of all evil. I reality, I suppose ;nothing is the root of all evil , but religion comes damned close. To those who believe in a deity ....no problem .....there may well be a divine entity , but he sure as hell is not religious in the human sense of possessing the only truth there ever was ” and if you don’t accept that , we’ll make your life a hell on earth , if we permit your continued existence .“Besides , we all know the absolute truth - “There is no god but Microsoft and Bill Gates is his prophet.” Just kidding ...where is that lightening coming from ??

I’m late to this party, just finished Bob’s piece. To say that I am pleased w/Delay’s fall, is extremely understated, however… as nice as it is to finally get in a punch, it will soon be forgotten and removed from media unless the real monster is also battered. The monster, is election reform, re: campaign finance. The reason there is no seperation from the asses and the elephants is because they’re both addicted to money - and Delay is/was a very special middle man to all that money. Just as corporations overpay CEOs, Americans, the stock holders of the government, over pay elected officals by allowing too much access to big money, because the things they are willing do for that fast-cash are the primary things that are destroying us. Kick out the cash takers - bring America’s kids, our sons and daughters back home. Maybe it’s time to take to the streets, like some of us did in the 60’s.

Here we go again.
What blasphemer’s (such as Mr. Scheer) don’t understand is how to read the Bible properly and to understand it’s meaning.
Tom DeLay was simply taking the “true” story behind “J.C’s” visit to the money-changers in the temple and translating it to “K” Street thereby leading to “Easy Street”.
Everyone knows that “J.C” was pissed because someone else was taking his “cut”. “J.C”, a man of action, took the appropriate steps and acted violently (hammer-like) in order to ensure that all money would thereafter pass through his hands.
Jesus, on the other hand, “had no ideas”, was a “coward”, “didn’t support the troops”, and was known to have cavorted with prostitutes, the sick, and the poor.
God (take your choice and take your chances) help us all.

This quote should be framed on the office walls of our Congressional Representatives - House and Senate alike to emphasize the importance of the separation of Church and State.
“When the People are fearful and afraid of the Government, we have TYRANNY. When the Government is fearful and afraid of the People we have LIBERTY.”

My world taught me God’s love. I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian family. I attended a well-known Christian University in the South. In the early 70’s, I heard chapel sermons where the Pope was referred to as “Bastard of the Catholic Church”, and I recall statements from my pastor that Martin Luther King, Jr. was surely a communist, and cruel jokes were told at the expense of African Americans.
Such information eventually gouged my psyche with enough conflicting information that I could risk questioning the familiar spiritual concepts which my childhood enviroment provided. I could begin the process of building new concepts which required rigorous inquiry and reason.
The developing human brain forms concepts by organizing incoming information into familiar and similar templates. Perception uses these templates to make sense of one’s personal environment. Unfamiliar information, if it cannot be assimilated into some similiar or familiar template, or develop into a new template, is simply rejected.
As a child, my environment provided concepts of God, love, hell, sin and Satan. I learned to make sense of my world through perceptions of punishment and reward, good and evil. I was unconsciously ruled by a fear difficult to step out of, yet enormiously grateful that I did.
Critical thinking skills are urgently needed if Americans are going to step out of binding, familiar
patterns of thinking and behaving. Each of us must hold to account our own mental dogmas. It is not enough to judge and condemn the foolish words of others. We cannot arrive at a collective new shore with the same old talk. We must go farther.
Vigilant, conscious inquiry is essential to uncover the unconscious, assumptive content of our thoughts, beliefs, words and actions. Poking fun for sport—condemnation with no action—hides a lazy and fragile mind which is too insecure to step into its own unknown. Such a mind is content with the sound of its own unchecked nonsense.
The real action of Life unfolding around us all the time observable in the new sunrise, the flight of birds and each greening blade of grass changes and grows the whole universe while we sleep afraid—afraid to become new by shedding what no longer serves.
Each of us must learn to question, reason and think anew like Sam Harris. Then we must, like Sam Harris, speak and act in ways that make this world better.

You cannot dismiss him so easily, tho…at least not until he is doing time at Club Fed (hopefully a very long time). I’ve often thought how nice it would be if our newscasters began our days with a really nice or funny srory.
Well, this AM, they did. CNN’s interview with DeLay and Stephonopolis [sp?] simply had me roaring and practically shouting with laughter. The unmitigated gall of this individual is unequaled by any but his former bossman, Bush. His crimes having been proven imperious, he would still address the television cameras with lies that would make a Satan himself cringe! If this isn’t a laugh I can’t imagine what it!
All funnies aside, the group of criminals running our country have used religion to their evil benefit since Bush was seated. Delay’s nasty smirk about democrat’s lies and mud slinging ruining his career was an attempt, once again, to cover his own lack of comscience. No one can convince me that the religion card hasn’t been played from day one. It’s kept the ignorant’s majority support throughout any and all of their illegal abuses of power that was entrusted to them to be strictly carred out by the rule of our Constitution. They’ve made a mockery of the most vitally important political document ever written.
I wrote a little poem several years ago after having been criticized by my boss lady:
You say you don’t like
the cut of my hair:
The sway of my hips,
ask me please,
How much I care_
Well, it’s more than probable that I may be criticized and ostracized because of my personal religious beliefs; however I am unbothered if so.
It is high time that a huge grave be dug in which religions from the world over be buried, never to be summoned again so long as mankind may survive the damage he’d done to Mother Earth. The insane dogmas of religion is undeniably the primary cause of the sufferings of humankind. Perdition is the one and only solution.

Whether its fear of blowback, lack of conviction or just plain laziness, but liberals have given the Christian right too wide a berth. We seem to have lacked the moral courage to—if not attack religion, at least defend ourselves against it.
For example, we should have pointed out long time ago that James Madison, one of the key framers of the constitution, was opposed to the hiring of a congressional chaplain, and to giving tax exempt status to churches.

OK, folks, listen up ... by the way, I speak with a bit of experience here, having been a born-again Christian at an age when I didn’t know any better (and which means I was raised a Fundamentalist Christian).
Born-again Fundamentalist Christians really, really do belief that God (a real live creature up in Heaven) is in control of the wealth distribution spigots. That means whatever they get, comes from God. (Believe me, they must have thought they were getting closer to Heaven when all that loot started rolling in!)
Of course, for the “brethren” who ain’t getting any, it’s the lesson of Job. God is testing you. Stay the course and you will be richly rewarded in Heaven, if not here.
Talk about vestial virgins! Christians want gold. Wealth is the sign of God’s favor. I know it is hard to believe from the outside, what with Jesus being their example and such ... but His example soothes the poor, “who we will always have with us.” (Can’t DO anything about those folks. They’ll get theirs later.)
DeLay’s faith in God (and pit bull loyality to Fundamentalist Christian Republicanism) has brought him so much success in life, he’s not about to start doubting now. It’s the same mentality as Bush #43’s. Belief in God (and loyality to other professed believers) has turned their lives into roaring successes. DeLay from being a bug exteminator. Bush from being a drunk. They have no psychological strength to question what is now their core belief.
And they were running our nation? And we let them? And Bush still is?
If you haven’t read Kevin Phillips, AMERICAN THEOCRACY, yet ... get it and read it. We the people had better get our country back before these idiots self-fulfil the prophecy of the Battle of Armageddon!

Ding Dong, DeLay Is Done! I put the Block Curse on this excellent example of Human Pesticide eight years ago, and finally it has come to fruition. Of course, many of us have cursed Tom DeLay, and we all should celebrate his demise as a victory.
Brothers and Sisters, Lovers and Sinners, let us give thanks for this small miracle. Praise be to the power and glory of truth! Every once in a while, it comes out like gangbusters.
The once terrifyingly toxic Tom DeLay now leaves Congress with his tail between his legs, exposed as a hypocrite, a whore, a liar and a crook.
The Hammer can’t get hard anymore.

Whether it’s fear of blowback, lack of conviction or just plain laziness, but liberals have given the Christian right too wide a berth. We seem to have lacked the moral courage to—if not attack religion, at least defend ourselves against it.
For example, we should have pointed out long time ago that James Madison, one of the key framers of the constitution, was opposed to the hiring of a congressional chaplain, and to giving tax exempt status to churches.
We should have widely publicized the fact that Eric Rudolph, the infamous Atlanta Olympic bomber, was a religious fanatic who set out to murder people for God, because, as he himself stated, “abortion on demand was immoral.”
Instead, we tip-toe around these religious yokels as if they somehow deserve our respect. Enough already.

The unravelling of the knot of religios bigots that have controlled things for so long that they believed they could do all sorts of wrongs and get away with it. It’s fun to watch.
