Pat Robertson and Theodicy ad Absurdum

By Larry Gross

There he goes again. No sooner had Ariel Sharon been rushed to the hospital with a “significant stroke” than the Rev. Pat Robertson informed the viewers of his cable TV 700 Club that this was God’s punishment for Sharon’s decision to unilaterally withdraw from Gaza. “He was dividing God’s land, and I would say, ‘Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the [European Union], the United Nations or the United States of America.’… God says, ‘This land belongs to me, and you’d better leave it alone,’ “ he said. Read the story.

The reaction was as swift as it was predictable. Cable news outlets broadcast Robertson’s medico-theological analysis and Jon Stewart, Jay Leno, et al, had the lead item for their late night monologues. Once more, Robertson had provided the country with the spectacle of theodicy ad absurdum: the loony religious right explanation of God’s will being done on Earth.

Recent highlights of the genre include Pat and Jerry Falwell opining that Sept. 11, 2001, was God’s response to rampant abortion, feminism and homosexuality, and the Rev. Pat’s warning to the citizens of Dover, Pa., after they rejected the effort to substitute “intelligent design” for the teaching of evolution in their high school: “I’d like to say to the good citizens of Dover: If there is a disaster in your area, don’t turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city. And don’t wonder why He hasn’t helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I’m not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that’s the case, don’t ask for His help because he might not be there.” Read more on this.

Robertson previously entered the field of foreign policy when he urged the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez: “If he thinks we’re trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it,” said Robertson. “It’s a whole lot cheaper than starting a war.... We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don’t need another $200-billion war to get rid of one strong-arm dictator. It’s a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.” More.

The question that demands our attention is why does he keep doing it, given the certainty of the response: general public reactions ranging from righteous indignation to bemusement to outright ridicule. Does Pat truly desire to play God’s fool for our amusement? The answer, I think, is fairly simple. We’re irrelevant to his true audience: the faithful members of the 700 Club who tune in to his show, put up with and respond appropriately to his incessant pleas for contributions, and share his disdain for the rest of us. The members of his true audience—what is called in today’s political parlance his base—are used to being dissed by the “mainstream media” and, in fact, this only further proves why they’re right to be scornful of those who scorn them. After all, they know who’ll have the last laugh when the Rapture comes, and the MSM, along with the rest of us sinners, are Left Behind.

Pat Robertson, the self proclaimned modern prophet is showing signs of mental fatigue if not mental incompetence. Saying that God inspires him to say all those radical things that he utters.
He also claims God talks to him !
With such grandiose communication with God Almighty he could run for President, and the superstitious 50% of the population would probably elect him !
Never the less; he would run into stiff competition running against the most “out of touch with reality, President” (George W Bush) we have ever had.
Bush, as I see it; is an atheist in disguise, making people believe that he recieves orders from God, to wage a religious War against all Arabs.
Millions of people doubt very seriously, that he has such communication with God Almighty.
We are not fooled, by this heretic and/or superstitious clown.

Nobody seemed to notice that Pat finally said he was sorry only after Israel cancelled his deal to open a religious theme park.
If you think Pat is nuts , what the hell can you think of the crazy Jews who are in bed with the Christian Zionists.
Okay, they know that there is NO chance that Jesus will come back so they will not have convert. Of course, the MESSIAH they are looking for isn’t going to come either.
He is smart enough that one of his organizations was amongst the first to get money from Bush’s slush fund otherwise known as faith based program.

Don’t you love it when people say the Bible says something but then do not directly quote what the Bible actually says? If you look at the passage in Joel that Pat Robertson was apparently basing his remarks on, you will see that His prophet said God was passing judgement (by means of a war) on several nations for dividing His land and people. I do not see any justification there for making the leap from a God who judges nations in such a manner to one who judges individuals (nor for the leap from judging other nations to judging Israel itself for choosing to divide its land).

I think Robertson is most likely sincere, if misguided. He seems to believe in almost a mechanistic God. If you follow the right formula, (send me $20 each month), God is obligated to respond (He will bless your life financially). Likewise, if you violate the terms of God’s rule, you are just as automatically cut off. And Robertson’s God can apparently be quite arbitrary.

It is an outrageous and obscene joke that as quickly as a “preacher” was installed between mankind and the rest of the universe, he began scolding...and giving orders.  We do not need these guys.  We do not need these guys for anything.

I cannot concieve of a reason that anyone would listen to Pat Robertson, let alone report what he says or concern themselves with him.  Stop making him important and he will fade into the woodwork.

Obviously Robertson’s motovation is to build audience share. Saying wackey things and getting the mainstream media to report it is certainly one of the most cost effective methods.  He is crazy like a fox.

Let’s never forget that Pat owns a diamond mine with Charles Taylor - I guess all “strong-arm dictator(s)” are not created equal… god must like some of them (you know, the ones that STARVE their people) better than others…

How dumb must one be to tune in to his claptrap?  How lonely do you have to be to find Pat comforting?  Perhaps we should all engage in a little “Hug your dumb, conservative next-door neighbor.”

Read ‘Sins of Scripture’ by John Shelby Spong, a retired (and controversial) Episcopal bishop. In his book he points out all the ‘hateful’ texts that Robertson, Falwell and their ilk use to justify their hatred of other groups-minorities, other faiths, women, gays, abortion, etc. It is very eye-opening and definitely an interesting read.

Personally, I am getting so sick of the comments made by the Robertson’s in life that they make me wonder what it ever meant to be a born again Christian. Are they messengers attempting to promote atheism!

In other words, God doesn’t support them (and W) only.

My problem with the Robertson mindset and allegations is that he makes the George Bush right wingers appear sensible, even rational.  And that’s far more dangerous than anything Robertson spews forth.

Zion of the heart;

For any Christians confused about the midguided, false teachings of these Zionist televangelists, read the Gospel of John, Chapter4, Verse 21.

Jesus made it very clear when he spoke to the woman at the well that Zion, that lofty “place” where we go to worship God, is not a place in geography, it is a place in the heart.

When geographical Zionists and misguided, prejudiced televangelists try to frame God’s limitless spiritual world into that tiny piece of geography, we get exactly what we have seen in the Middle east; war, death and destruction.

Pat Robertson is blinded by his worldly prejudice, he and Falwell both use the scriptures to justify their confusion and bitterness.

Just what do they think Jesus meant by those scriptures? How can such an important and truly clarifying verse be ignored? What spirit possesses them that they can not see the truth so clearly explaned? Once again, read Jesus’ own words, in John CH 4, Verse 21, how can it be any more clear and direct than these simple words?

Robertson, Falwell and the rest of these new Pahrisees are part and parcel of a much bigger deception than their own little lies and miscalculations. They may be in for quite a surprise when “the time” comes, and their own personal, internal Zion is not where it is supposed to be. They have all placed in geography.  But it should be in their hearts.

I know it’s a waste of time but… Robertson infuriates me beyond the point where I can just ignore him. His brand of revolting, ignorant vitreol makes me puke. Those who listen to this conman and follow his lead clearly have serious mental handicaps. For Robertson and his gang of thieves to take advantage of these mentally disabled folk in this way is an outrage.

I can’t describe in detail in public what I’d like to have happen to him and his thugs but I can tell I get a mental image of focusing an internet camera on them and publicly nailing them naked upside down on crosses.

Then, with a pair of rusty pliers, I and my team of happy, dancing atheists would begin removing, one per hour, each of their finger nails and toe nails.

Then… oh, but I can’t give away the whole show…

However, we would let them know we’d be praying for them 24/7 just so they wouldn’t feel lonely or fearful. After all, we’re not monsters! We’d make sure they knew that we had God’s approval for our actions and that He told us do it.

At first pass it’s easy not to take Robertson seriously because he is, I believe, an absolute ignoramous--in the truest Dunce sense of the word. However, even a dunce can cause mischief. And his brand of mischief is continuing to help keep a respectable portion of our population in the Dark Ages.

The only way to fight that is continued public dissent to his opinions and rants. I would like to see mainstream media more involved in that--stricly from a ‘News’ perspective of course. These places are fine but admit it, we are all preaching to the choir--no pun intended. If you turn just one of his listeners from the Dark Side to the Force, you’ve won a battle. Maybe that person will raise their children with open minds…

I think that even the excellent Gottfried Wilhelm, Freiherr von Leibniz, who, when he wasn’t busy inventing the calculus or trying to convince Louis XIV to attack Egypt to draw Ottoman attention from Europe, coined the term «theodicé» to explain that God had created for us «die beste aller möglichen Welten», would have had a hard time explaining Pat Robertson’s necessary role in Creation. I think they will be in for a big surprise.Pat and friends deep down think they can get away with all this because they don’t believe in GOD any more than Atheists. Or they are completely dillusional and should be locked up. They should be in prison. But since they are “Religious” leaders, and their victims are all willing, they can’t be charged and tried as the criminals they are. Religious persecution they would cry and the country would be up in arms. But, alas and alack, they’ll only just pass away with all of their followers to be replaced by some more who are just as stupid!

For the sake of argument, let’s say Pat Robertson is partly right, that Sharon’s stroke was God’s (or G-d to Jews) punishment.  What would G-d most likely want to punish Sharon for? Would G-d be so petty as to punish Sharon for withdrawing from the tiny Gaza Strip (1% of the area of Palestine before 1948 that the Zionists coveted).  Or did G-d dispense a stroke because Sharon violated G-d’s laws, the Ten Commandments, such as You Shall Not Murder, You Shall Not Steal, You Shall Not Covet Your Neighbor’s House And Field, and You Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Your Neighbor?
.
As Sharon lies in his hospital bed, his political career probably over, how will G-d and history judge him? Do people even know what Sharon has done? Robert Fisk, one of the most respected Middle East correspondents and who was in the region during several of Sharon’s deeds, shares his thoughts on the man:
.
ARIEL SHARON by ROBERT FISK:
“I shook hands with him once, a brisk, no-nonsense soldier’s grip from Sharon as he finished a review of the vicious Phalangist militiamen who stood in the barracks square at Karantina in Beirut…
.
Back on 18 September (1982), Loren Jenkins of The Washington Post and Karsten Tveit of Norwegian television and I had clambered over the piled corpses of Chatila - of raped and eviscerated women and their husbands and children and brothers - and Jenkins, knowing that the Israelis had sat around the camps for two nights watching this filth, shrieked “Sharon!” in anger and rage. He was right.
.
Sharon it was who sent the Phalange into the camps on the night of 16 September - to hunt for “terrorists”, so he claimed at the time.
.
The subsequent Israeli Kahan commission of enquiry into this atrocity provided absolute proof that Israeli soldiers saw the massacre taking place. The evidence of a Lieutenant Avi Grabovsky was crucial. He was an Israeli deputy tank commander and reported what he saw to his higher command. “Don’t interfere,” the senior officer said. Ever afterwards, Israeli embassies around the world would claim that the commission held Sharon only indirectly responsible for the massacre. It was untrue. The last page of the official Israeli report held Sharon “personally responsible”.
.
It was years later that the Israeli-trained Phalangist commander, Elie Hobeika, now working for the Syrians, agreed to turn state’s evidence against Sharon - now the Israeli Prime Minister - at a Brussels court. The day after the Israeli attorney general declared Sharon’s defence a “state” matter, Hobeika was killed by a massive car bomb in east Beirut. Israel denied responsibility. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld traveled to Brussels and quietly threatened to withdraw Nato headquarters from Belgium if the country maintained its laws to punish war criminals from foreign nations. Within months, George W Bush had declared Sharon “a man of peace”. It was all over.
.
In the end, Sharon got away with it, even when it was proved that he had, the night before the Phalangists attacked the civilians of the camp, publicly blamed the Palestinians for the murder of their leader, President-elect Bashir Gemayel. Sharon told these ruthless men that the Palestinians had killed their beloved “chief”. Then he sent them in among the civilian sheep - and claimed later he could never have imagined what they would do in Chatila.
.
Only years later was it proved that hundreds of Palestinians who survived the original massacre were interrogated by the Israelis and then handed back to the murderers to be slaughtered over the coming weeks…”

I’ve never accepted the myth that any part of the Middle East was God’s land.  Or that any group – Christian, Jewish or Muslim – had rights to the land based on such claims (or just because one group’s storytellers were better than other storytellers). In any case, according to Robert Fisk, the original “promised land” was largely on what is now the Palestinian West Bank—hence the Jewish colonization of Palestinian land—while the Western coastal plain syuch as Haifa, Tel Aviv, Gaza, etc. was not (of course, Zionist claims of a Greater Israel span a much larger area). The Jewish “entry into the promised land” over three thousand years ago was done by bloody conquest and genocide (first against the Canaanite inhabitants who had lived on the land long before the Jews arrived, including in Jerusalem). Furthermore, the Jews were merely one of about 20 invaders who invaded, occupied and settled parts of Palestine during its 9,000 year history, but they were all defeated by other invading powers. The Jewish kingdoms on Palestine lasted only 73 years (David and Solomon) to at most 414 years (destruction of Judah in 586 B.C.).

According to the Neturei Karta orthodox Jews: “Neturei Karta oppose the so-called “State of Israel” not because it operates secularly, but because the entire concept of a sovereign Jewish state is contrary to Jewish Law… Jews are not allowed to dominate, kill, harm or demean another people and are not allowed to have anything to do with the Zionist enterprise, their political meddling and their wars…. The true Jews are against dispossessing the Arabs of their land and homes. According to the Torah, the land should be returned to them.” So according to the Neturei Karta, G-d should be pleased that Sharon returned partial control of the Gaza Strip to the Palestinians (the Israelis haven’t completely “withdrawn” from Gaza).  Of course, perhaps G-d wanted Sharon to return ALL the land to the Palestinians, and punished Sharon for not doing enough.
