Rep. Dennis Kucinich: Looking Past One-Party RulePosted on Oct 30, 2006
Editor’s note: In advance of the election, Republicans painted Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) as the specter of a Democrat-controlled House. In this piece for Truthdig (originally posted on 10/30), Kucinich responds to the attack, and gives the American people a preview of what’s to come.
Under these circumstances, the American people, fed up with an illegal and untenable war, are demanding accountability and a true restoration of the two-party system. The 2006 elections will reflect the American people’s desire for a new start and a new direction. The desire for change is palpable. Few are more aware of this shift than the operatives of the Republican National Committee, who, in this election season, have attempted to make a new art form of the political smear. A few days ago the RNC singled me out for obloquy. Let us consider the source. The tenor of their fear-driven attack is a measure of their anxiety-ridden anticipation: They have been institutionally and constitutionally incapable of publicly (and legally) accounting for their conduct of state. I will not prejudice with any criticism or charges any oversight hearings of any committee I may chair in the next Congress. However, I do know that the American people still have unanswered questions about 9/11, WMDs, the abandonment of international law and the Geneva Conventions, the war in Iraq, the White House Iraq Group, the Rendon propaganda machine, Afghanistan, Abu Graib, Guantanamo, the Pat Tillman case, Iraq war casualties, the missing $10.8 billion in Iraq reconstruction funds, the human and economic toll of the war, rendition, wiretapping, domestic spying, and plans for an attack on Iran, I do know that the American people cannot believe what has happened to this country in the past six years. I do know that the American people are demanding accountability. And, in whatever capacity I serve in the next Congress, I will uphold the solemn oath I take to defend the Constitution of the United States, without regard to fear or favor. From the Heart of Texas where we know Dennis well and prefer him to George W. Bush who was never popular enough in Austin to win a citywide race for dogcatcher - We tried to warn the world that George W. Bush should never be elected president and no one listened or let’s say not enough people listened to put the race out of reach of their election fraud tactics. So George W. Bush ascended to office on the strength of the black vote...Clarence Thomas. I know neocons sneer at a Department of Peace and the implication it will in time starve their beast but consider that we started with a Department of War, and guess what we got? We renamed it to “Defense” which still implied war and guess what we got? We seem to be adept at getting what we set out to get. So not to wax to John Lennonish but IMAGINE what could happen if we actually set out to get “peace”, to resolve conflict, to help others, instead of conquering and exploiting them for the sake of exceedingly narrow “U.S. interests”, a euphemism for the men in the shadows who can be counted on to sell us our wars and religions the same way they sell us our cars, as Jackson Browne once said. Dennis did quite well and was running 2nd in the primary well ahead of John Who? and just behind the now vindicated Howard 50 States Dean until he made a fatal mistake. He had the nerve, the gaul, the temerity to speak honestly about media consolidation. From that point on he was given less than 1% of the media coverage and then only to paint him as a “vanity” candidate while a known GOP dirty trickster personally bankrolled Al Sharpton in order to upstage Dennis and dilute his message. As a delegate to the Texas State Democratic Convention let me tell you I have never in my life heard a better more inspiring political speech not even in the days of John Kennedy than Dennis Kucinich gave. He upstaged John Edwards and we had Kerry delegates jumping up and down yelling “why didn’t anyone tell us about this guy! This is what we want!” And with that energy we did what no one thought possible in Texas, we passed a resolution calling for formation of a real Department of Peace. We called for the leader of the free world to spend some portion of its allegedly vast resources on building an infrastructure for conflict resolution. And as everyone knows we Americans can build anything we set our minds to. Don’t dismiss it as silly hippy warm fuzzies or sell it short as new age hokum and do consider the gaping maw of nuclear/chemical/biological destruction we now stare into, the abyss of world domination by theocratic corporate feudalsim. The only thing George W. Bush is afraid of is the same thing his father was afraid of, 5 million citizens in the streets of DC and a military so torn it will not fire on its own families. The last time around many people thought well even so how bad could it be? That was before George W. Bush, the Republican Party and 10 Democratic Senators overturned The Magna Carta. We now live in what the University of Chicago neocons consciously set out to build, a presidential dictatorship which this year ranks 53rd in the world in FREEDOM OF THE PRESS. We have all the 14 hallmark characteristics of fascism rampant (hit the Internets and use The Google if you doubt it. This is what happens to democracies that fail. They descend into fascism, an age old contrivance for the few to hold power over the many. It didn’t die in WWII when Prescott Bush was busy supporting it so strongly he had 5 businesses seized by the US government for trading with the enemy all the way through WWII. And we didn’t heed the chilling words “military industrial complex” inserted into Eisenhower’s farewell address by John McCain’s father (who must now be on spin cycle). So quit worrying about bacon and silly ass power rankings or your local congressman’s ability to bring home the earmarks and start worrying about the complete demise of democracy and world wide eco destruction leading to agricultural collapse and famines much less resource wars. We need every single Dennis Kucinich this world can produce and we need them now on the world stage.

Dear Mr Kucinich,
A sticker with your name has been enhancing the back of my truck since before the 2004 elections. I raised my voice against a Bush war even before 9/11 and was quite active after 9/11 to expose the lies about WMD etc. to stop the insanity of an attck on Iraq.
Your sticker still is present on my truck and I get again positive comments becauswe of it.
Mr Kucinich, I know what is at stake, and I am deeply concerned. The dems have no strong, focused and centered un-fearful person to run for president in 2006 as of this moment.
Any president, no matter from which party, that will be elected in 2003 will have a gigantic task,
never before experienced by any pres of the US. However, I know that you have the ingtelligence, courage and experience to save this nation before it is drawn into a fascist-military theocracy.
Please consider running for president in 2004. I for one will do all I can to support you.
Regards, Maurice

Congress.org just released it’s “power rankings” for members of Congress, based on committee positions, legislation and overall “influence” as determined by Knowlegis, an information management company. As would be expected, members of the party in power, the Republicans, are, generally, more influential than the overwhelming majority of Democratic legislators. Hopefully, House and Senate Democrats will all gain relative influence if our party takes back control of Congress in January 2007. That should be good news for ALL Democrats but, unfortunately, that’s not necessarily true in all cases.
My congressman, Rep.Dennis Kucinich (OH-10), will soon be re-elected to a sixth term to the U.S. House of Representatives on November 7th. In addition, he is running for president (again) in 2008. Despite spending $13 million and investing two (2) years of his life, Dennis managed to capture only 23 convention delegates in his losing 2004 primary. Rev. Al Sharpton was able to convince 27 delegates to endorse his candidacy.
Having said that, Congress.org lists Dennis’ current “power rank” at # 391 (out of 435). A relatively low rank, for any Democrat, is hardly shocking in the 109th, GOP controlled, Congress. What IS troubling, however, is Kucinich’s low 157 rank among his 201 fellow House Democrats and, in particular, his mediocre standing with fellow Ohio Democratic representatives. Dennis (157) currently ranks 5th in the six-person Ohio Democratic delegation, behind Rep.Marcy Kaptur (28), Rep.Sherrod Brown (36), Rep.Ted Strickland (116),and Rep.Stephanie Tubbs Jones (154). Apparently, only two-term Rep.Tim Ryan (188) and disgraced Republican congressman Bob Ney (437) ranked lower than Dennis Kucinich in Congress.org’s most recent power ranking.
The biggest shock, however, is Kucinich’s dramatic 55 slot drop (from 336) just since 2004. Apparently, the congressman’s failed 2004 campaign cost him more than $13 million and the two years of his life (and focus) that he invested in pursuit of the presidency. His drop in influence (i.e.Power Ranking) was, easily, the most dramatic of all his Democratic colleagues in the Ohio delegation. Unfortunately, it now appears to have cost his long-suffering constituents even more. Although Congress.org has predicted that Dennis’ rank will climb 67 slots if (and when) the Democrat’s take back the U.S. House, his rise in rank will only be a net gain of 12 from where he was in 2004. The fear of many of his district supporters is that another presidential campaign by our congressman will only further erode his already weakening influence in both the Ohio delegation and among his Democratic colleagues in the House of Representatives.
Dennis is a good man. No doubt about that. His 2004 presidential candidacy was successful in raising awareness to a number of important issues; particularly the war in Iraq. Having said that, it’s become painfully apparent that Dennis is not who the Democratic primary voters want to be their eventual nominee. It’s time, then, that Dennis return home and help the folks who sent him to Washington, who gave him a platform to speak in the first place. There’s a lot of work that need to be done in Cleveland. We need Dennis’ full attention and considerable energy.

In response to Allen Ross, I interpret what he said about wealth moving upward as being that more of the rich will get richer. As this administration has taken away from the middle class to give tax breaks to the rich corporations etc, the wealth of the nation is moving upward into the hands of those running the corporations and the already rich.

to my OH-10 neighbor, Lawrence - if the Dems regain control of the House, I agree that Dennis will be a position to “bring home some bacon.” I don’t agree that possibility would be negated if Dennis runs for President again.
Dennis has proven over decades to be a hardworking, dedicated, selfless public servant. If he runs for president again, I expect he will do as he did in the 2004 race- he will raise the level of discourse about the national issues we SHOULD be talking about - making the other candidates from both parties quirm a little - and force them to formulate their positions and debate the issues.
In this age of corporate money & control of political discussion - that is a great service to all Americans. We need more candidates willing to insist on discussing what matters most to most Americans.
This is the definition of a dedicated, selfless, (and I would add, fearless) public servant. Congressman Kucinich is that, undoubtedly.
What does anyone else in OH-10 have to say about this?
As you can see, I am undecided - should Congressman Kucinich mount a presidential run in 08?
Recall, Dennis’ published plan back in Fall 2004 to “Bring the UN in and get the US out of Iraq” He proposed that the occupation was already a quagmire, our troops were targets of terrorists flowing into Iraq, the cost of occupation (then at $155 billion) had no end in sight, and “staying the course” would damage American security. He proposed bringing UN peacekeepers in and getting our troops home in 90 days.
If only more people had heard him then.
In 2008, will Americans have the fearlessness required to imagine and fight for peace? Maybe we do need him to lead us in 08?

Could somebody please edit this sentence? It has a (probable) typo that I can’t resolve definitively enough to quote Dennis accurately. Thanks. It’s near the beginning:
“It has led to a government which has abused the war power, corrupted the Bill of Rights, established a national security state, and sharply accelerated upwards the wealth of the nation.”
I’m hoping it should say, “… and sharply accelerated upwards the ["theft of” or “illegal manipulation for profit of” or, most probably, “expenditure of"] the wealth of the nation.”
The Party and its supporters no longer care where the money they get or are promised comes from. They already know The Party and the money are drenched in the blood of many of The People, from many nations. They want The Party (the power) and the money anyway, and greed seems stronger than any other motivators, such as those represented by Dennis Kucinich. This goal, satisfying personal greed, is “on the other side,” is clearly an impediment to achieving the opposite of greed: traditional American goals.
If the statement is accurate as it appears here, The People will ignore the critical long-term damages, and reach for the promised and never delivered cash, to spend now.
They’ll be supporting the nation in the only way Bush offers the former middle class, now called the working poor, which now is the class just above that with the highest numbers dying in Iraq, those just a bit poorer and less educated. Spending money is the biggest way, other than shutting up, dying or being permanently wounded, visibly or not, to help our military win this war so they can come home. Borrow and spend more money.
The Party’s fiction: Infected with George W. ("The Wuss"), Bush the Disgrace III’s silver spoon mindset, “Borrow and spend will never come due.”
We, The People are the subjects of extremely successful propaganda tools, as is evident in the national yawn over Dennis’s completely unsurprising and accurate list of the outrages happening in the U.S.A. in “broad daylight”, in front of our faces, with no significant opposition.

I’m proud to live in OH-10 and have Dennis representing me and my family in Congress. I admire his tenacity, his honesty, and most importantly, his open communication with his constituents. When you send Dennis your thoughts on an issue, he responds...not with a “thanks for writing” e-mail like I get from the White House or Sen. DeWine’s office 99.9% of the time, but with a real letter outlining his views on the issue, how he voted on it in committee or on the House floor, and what he’s doing to make substantive positive change for the people of NE Ohio and Americans in general.

Where have the voices of reason gone to, in this paranoid land of Terror Levels, and State of Emergency newscasts? The countenance of this nation has changed these past years to that of an angry white man, smashing down all that his fist can destroy.
Popular opinion polls usurp logic, and science is quite out of favor now, easily replaced with distractions, smokescreens, and celebrity pedophiles that take the weight off a Persian war, spiraling out of control, wreaking unimaginable havoc on a people already burdened so heavily with grief, death. Perhaps democracy has always been found through the barrel end of a rifle, trading bullets for beliefs; lives for liberties. But our task in the weeks ahead is to vote. Vote this nation back onto her feet, and vow never to let her fall so far again.

My congressman, Rep.Dennis J. Kucinich (OH-10), is running for president again. The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported last month that the 2004 presidential candidate and his new wife, Elizabeth, were in California for a seven-city fundraising tour ("Kucinich taps wallets in Santa Cruz”, 9/9/06). Confident that his re-election to Congress is “a safe bet”, the Sentinel reported that “the 59-year-old vegan and former mayor of Cleveland is eying the presidency once again”.
With House Democrats poised to take back control of Congress, it seems to me that Dennis’ plans for another presidential campaign should be disturbing to his loyal middle-class and poor constituents. His party in power, for the first time since he’s been in Congress, Dennis will be in a position to finally “bring home some bacon” to his beleagered constituents. (For the second time in the last three years, Cleveland, Ohio has been sited as “the poorest city in America"). And only last week, Cleveland was, unfortunately, designated as America’s 7th most dangerous city.
It seems to me, that Rep.Kucinich can’t maximize that opportunity if he’s traveling around the country with his new wife, staying in nice hotels, making speeches, “tapping wallets” of adoring supporters, and collecting even more (money) from federal matching campaign funds. The congressman’s two-year, 2004 presidential campaign cost him $13 million, two years of non-stop campaigning, but netted him only 23 convention delegates for his efforts. 4 less than Rev. Al Sharpton.
The path that Dennis chooses, between now and the 2008 election, will provide supporters and detractors alike with the congressman’s priorities. Will he be the dedicated, selfless public servant, with only the best interests of his loyal constituents at heart or will he, instead, choose the temporary fame and adulation that comes with being a candidate for president of the United States? Stay tuned.

I’m so proud to be able to cast a vote for Dennis as my Congressman. I agree that Dennis was right all along. I agree he should be president!
However, I have to say that I am not sure that running for President is the right thing for Dennis to do. I don’t believe there are enough voters willing to support him to victory. And, we all know the Dem Party is not going to support him, because the Dem Party is too tied up tight to big business.
Perhaps the best way -most productive way for Dennis to work is from a step or two behind the party leadership and work in the existing committee structure and to work to organize other Congresspeople to push a “united front” against the fear-mongering corporate thieves that swirl around Washington.
Remember how he worked so effectively to lead 140+ Congresspeople to vote NO for the war back in 2002?
Maybe his most effective role is to steel the spines, bravery, nerves, hopes and dreams - of his collegues for the onslaught we know is coming.

We need Dennis or someone with his courage to run and win! We need to drastically cut the budget of the Pentagon and somehow tackle the military-industrial-Congressional complex (Eisenhower’s original unrevised language) so that we can fund the human needs of this nation’s people, e.g., health care, education, infrastructure repair. It is without doubt that Mr. Kucinich is one of the exceptions, unfortunately, of honorable men to hold modern office. (His wife is not bad either - way to go Dennis)
This election is indeed the most important one we will ever have. If we are to ever save our country by bringing the criminals in this government to justice this may well be our last chance.
The most horrendous of these crimes is the attacks of 9/11. It doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes to know that 9/11 was a “false flag” operation planned and carried out by elements within our own government. Anyone that has any doubts about this claim need only to view the evidence yourself at sites 9/11Truth.org, Belowgroundsurface.org., Scholar’s for 9/11 Truth to name just a few.
If indeed the criminals do manage to steal another election you can pretty much prepare yourself for Hell in America. Actually no matter which way it goes things will get a lot worse before they get better.
Once the truth is known - nothing else matters.

It’s ironic to see a Dem. rally against the one party system even as his party jumps in bed with the same corporate political pimps that own the Genocidal Oppression Party (GOP).
It is time for a true reform of the political process. No more special interest money, no more corporate money, no more PAC money, no more period. It is time that we (the taxpayers) fund our own elections. It’s not complicated really. FAR less complicated than the system now. It might even give us some actual candidates.
Here’s a general idea on how it could work.
Candidate statements (that included your stands on the issues of the day) would be required to have X amount of signatures. These would be submitted by some deadline. Once submitted and verified each candidate would get access to Y amount of funds.
New laws would make any election ad, mailing, or pamphleting that wasn’t paid for from the Election Fund illegal. Further, material support (transportation, food, lodging, etc) would similarly be required to be paid from these funds. Candidates could either be prohibited from spending their own cash or if X candidate donates $1 million to his campaign the fund would have to level the playing field by matching those funds to any other candidate for that race (to limit costs a ceiling could be made on self donations).
This needs a lot of flushing out of course. A system like this could actually allow people without the means (being rich themselves or being supported by those who are) to become candidates. This could expand us to a truly more representative government ...or at least some more choice in our elections. It would also take corporate money out of elections.
Of course this doesn’t remove greed. Corruption will still happen, but it will not be “legal” as it is now. (Oh you want my vote on HR 1269, give $10,000 to Ass PAC and I’m all yours!) Legalized bribery needs to be outlawed.

Thank you congressman for your continued clarity and moral voice on these momentous issues our country faces. I sincerely wish that the media had allowed you in all the debates of the last presidential election, so that our country’s dialogue could have been elevated to a level we all need as citizens.

Dennis is the only politician to whose campaign I’ve ever donated money in my life. Yes, he should be president. Let’s hope he runs again and wins this time.

Without a doubt, you are the best hope for real change in Washington. Please run again in ‘08 for president. Let your points become the issues, and, with or without the approval of the DNC, in time they’ll come your way because you have the will of the people behind you! Keep fighting the good fight of truth.

Many people are unaware as to how important it is not only for the future of Americans, but of the world, that Congressman Dennis Kucinich be re-elected and that he has a majority of Democrats in the House, with which to work. He introduced a proposal for a U.S. Department of Peace and Non-violence and he had more than 70 co-sponsors, but not one of them was from the Republican side of the isle. Establishment of this department would be the start of a movement toward sanity in the United States. If we can move our country into a culture of peace and sane behavior, other countries will follow. The United States is the most violent country in the industrial world and violent crimes are on the increase. The proposed U.S. Department of Peace and Non-violence deals with both international and domestic conflict resolution. We can do so much better as a nation. We must do so much better. But first we need leaders who are committed to doing better. On my “I am grateful for” list, Dennis Kucinich has a spot.

If the dems win I hope they use their power to dismantle the Bush dynasty so it does not rise again. If they instead play politics as usual, and let these crooks go, they will blow a huge opportunity to help the country survive. We need to undo everything Bush has done. And the ones responsible need a long prison stay.

This man should be president. No more of the power hungry big man on campus types.
Report thisAnd thank you, Dennis-we DO have questions about 911, and we’re not going to let it be another military industrial strike against the US like the JFK, RFK and MLK killings.
Such a gentle man yet so brave. The world would forgive the ugly, fat, greedy, violent, entitlement drunk American ONLY if we put old Dennis in there to apologize for us and fix things per the demands of progress.
