Chris Hedges: Bush’s Nuclear Apocalypse

Iran's nuclear missile

Accompanied by armed forces commanders, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reviews Iran’s Shahab-3 missile, a weapon capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and reaching Europe, Israel and U.S. forces in the Middle East.

By Chris Hedges

Editor’s Note: The former Middle East bureau chief for The New York Times and author of the bestseller “War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning” reports on Bush’s plan for Iran, and how a callous war, conceived by zealots, will lead to a disaster of biblical proportions.

The aircraft carrier Eisenhower, accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage, guided-missile destroyer USS Mason and the fast-attack submarine USS Newport News, is, as I write, making its way to the Straits of Hormuz off Iran.  The ships will be in place to strike Iran by the end of the month.  It may be a bluff.  It may be a feint.  It may be a simple show of American power.  But I doubt it.

War with Iran—a war that would unleash an apocalyptic scenario in the Middle East—is probable by the end of the Bush administration.  It could begin in as little as three weeks.  This administration, claiming to be anointed by a Christian God to reshape the world, and especially the Middle East, defined three states at the start of its reign as “the Axis of Evil.” They were Iraq, now occupied; North Korea, which, because it has nuclear weapons, is untouchable; and Iran.  Those who do not take this apocalyptic rhetoric seriously have ignored the twisted pathology of men like Elliott Abrams, who helped orchestrate the disastrous and illegal contra war in Nicaragua, and who now handles the Middle East for the National Security Council.  He knew nothing about Central America.  He knows nothing about the Middle East.  He sees the world through the childish, binary lens of good and evil, us and them, the forces of darkness and the forces of light.  And it is this strange, twilight mentality that now grips most of the civilian planners who are barreling us towards a crisis of epic proportions.

These men advocate a doctrine of permanent war, a doctrine which, as William R. Polk points out, is a slight corruption of Leon Trotsky’s doctrine of permanent revolution.  These two revolutionary doctrines serve the same function, to intimidate and destroy all those classified as foreign opponents, to create permanent instability and fear and to silence domestic critics who challenge leaders in a time of national crisis. It works.  The citizens of the United States, slowly being stripped of their civil liberties, are being herded sheep-like, once again, over a cliff.

But this war will be different.  It will be catastrophic.  It will usher in the apocalyptic nightmares spun out in the dark, fantastic visions of the Christian right.  And there are those around the president who see this vision as preordained by God; indeed, the president himself may hold such a vision.

The hypocrisy of this vaunted moral crusade is not lost on those in the Middle East.  Iran actually signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.  It has violated a codicil of that treaty written by European foreign ministers, but this codicil was never ratified by the Iranian parliament.  I do not dispute Iran’s intentions to acquire nuclear weapons nor do I minimize the danger should it acquire them in the estimated five to 10 years.  But contrast Iran with Pakistan, India and Israel.  These three countries refused to sign the treaty and developed nuclear weapons programs in secret.  Israel now has an estimated 400 to 600 nuclear weapons.  The word “Dimona,” the name of the city where the nuclear facilities are located in Israel, is shorthand in the Muslim world for the deadly Israeli threat to Muslims’ existence.  What lessons did the Iranians learn from our Israeli, Pakistani and Indian allies?

Given that we are actively engaged in an effort to destabilize the Iranian regime by recruiting tribal groups and ethnic minorities inside Iran to rebel, given that we use apocalyptic rhetoric to describe what must be done to the Iranian regime, given that other countries in the Middle East such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia are making noises about developing a nuclear capacity, and given that, with the touch of a button Israel could obliterate Iran, what do we expect from the Iranians?  On top of this, the Iranian regime grasps that the doctrine of permanent war entails making “preemptive” and unprovoked strikes.

Those in Washington who advocate this war, knowing as little about the limitations and chaos of war as they do about the Middle East, believe they can hit about 1,000 sites inside Iran to wipe out nuclear production and cripple the 850,000-man Iranian army.  The disaster in southern Lebanon, where the Israeli air campaign not only failed to break Hezbollah but united most Lebanese behind the militant group, is dismissed.  These ideologues, after all, do not live in a reality-based universe.  The massive Israeli bombing of Lebanon failed to pacify 4 million Lebanese.  What will happen when we begin to pound a country of 70 million people?  As retired General Wesley K. Clark and others have pointed out, once you begin an air campaign it is only a matter of time before you have to put troops on the ground or accept defeat, as the Israelis had to do in Lebanon.  And if we begin dropping bunker busters, cruise missiles and iron fragmentation bombs on Iran this is the choice that must be faced—either sending American forces into Iran to fight a protracted and futile guerrilla war or walking away in humiliation.

“As a people we are enormously forgetful,” Dr. Polk, one of the country’s leading scholars on the Middle East, told an Oct. 13 gathering of the Foreign Policy Association in New York.  “We should have learned from history that foreign powers can’t win guerrilla wars.  The British learned this from our ancestors in the American Revolution and re-learned it in Ireland.  Napoleon learned it in Spain.  The Germans learned it in Yugoslavia.  We should have learned it in Vietnam and the Russians learned it in Afghanistan and are learning it all over again in Chechnya and we are learning it, of course, in Iraq.  Guerrilla wars are almost unwinnable.  As a people we are also very vain.  Our way of life is the only way.  We should have learned that the rich and powerful can’t always succeed against the poor and less powerful.”

An attack on Iran will ignite the Middle East.  The loss of Iranian oil, coupled with Silkworm missile attacks by Iran on oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, could send oil soaring to well over $110 a barrel.  The effect on the domestic and world economy will be devastating, very possibly triggering a huge, global depression.  The 2 million Shiites in Saudi Arabia, the Shiite majority in Iraq and the Shiite communities in Bahrain, Pakistan and Turkey will turn in rage on us and our dwindling allies.  We will see a combination of increased terrorist attacks, including on American soil, and the widespread sabotage of oil production in the Gulf.  Iraq, as bad as it looks now, will become a death pit for American troops as Shiites and Sunnis, for the first time, unite against their foreign occupiers.

The country, however, that will pay the biggest price will be Israel.  And the sad irony is that those planning this war think of themselves as allies of the Jewish state.  A conflagration of this magnitude could see Israel drawn back in Lebanon and sucked into a regional war, one that would over time spell the final chapter in the Zionist experiment in the Middle East.  The Israelis aptly call their nuclear program “the Samson option.” The Biblical Samson ripped down the pillars of the temple and killed everyone around him, along with himself.

If you are sure you will be raptured into heaven, your clothes left behind with the nonbelievers, then this news should cheer you up.  If you are rational, however, these may be some of the last few weeks or months in which to enjoy what is left of our beleaguered, dying republic and way of life.

Chris I was very sorry to see you, astonishingly, apparently, assert that you didn’t doubt that Iran was developing nuclear weapons.  It maybe so but there is no evidence for it, and if it were true it would undermine the entire fabric of anti-proliferation based on the NPT.  Firstly the Shah was encouraged by the USA to develop civilian nuclear power in the 1970s.  The Iranians mothballed it after the revolution, having other things to attend to and Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa declaring nuclear weapons un-Islamic.  However it *does* make complete sense for Iran to exploit its uranium resources.  See the CASMII fact sheet for background and references: http://www.campaigniran.org/casmii/?q=node/2093

As you say the USA and Iran are signatories to the NPT, which guarantees them assistance is developing fuel enrichment technology in return for IAEA supervision and a commitment to use the technology for civilian purposes only.  The fatwa remains in place and Iran insists it its intentions are peaceful.  But it has had nuclear contracts repeatedly broken (and at least the spirit of the NPT violated) forcing it onto the black market to take the enrichment technology in house; the IAEA has unraveled this and Iran says it has never violated the terms of the NPT.  Iran has been subjected to a more rigorous inspection process than any other state and the IAEA has indicated that this process is on track, as they did of course in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq.

There is no objective evidence that Iran has any nuclear weapons programme, a fact that is becoming ever clearer: president Bush in his recent ‘World War 3’ press conference made it clear that enrichment technology plus knowledge was enough to constitute a threat.

So we have the situation where the USA is saying, regardless of the fact that we (USA and Iran) are signatories to the NPT, we are going to make war with you because this other non-signatory to the NPT, with its own nuclear warheads, doesn’t trust you with this civilian technology which you need and are entitled to by a treaty with us.

It should come as no surprise that the Iranians see this as unfair and demeaning and hardly playing by the rules. The Iranians have hinted that an accommodation probably could be reached if anyone would sit down and negotiate sensibly (as the EU3 tried to but every agreement was scuppered by the USG). They surely believe--and who can blame them--that it is all a charade for regime change. And so it surely is.  And your article is clear on this point.

So why repeat the canard that Iran is bent on getting nuclear weapons?  This is the start of the poison: that these are sneaky brown-skinned fanatical foreigners that can’t be trusted whatever inspections process they subject themselves to, even when one of their founding fathers has declared nuclear weapons unethical and prohibited them.  It is the kind of high handed attitude that has led the Iranians to insist on meaningful negotiations if they are to surrender what is their right by treaty (and for them a strategic requirement), and it is being combined with the most insidious campaign by the war party to suggest that Iran just wants nuclear weapons to destroy Israel.

Chris if even you are getting caught up in this quagmire of distrust and distortion what hope is there?  If it is really true that there are certain nations that simply aren’t to be trusted by us the arbitrators, whatever the objective evidence, then surely we have no basis for international order, other than offered by the war party.

Response to phone calls from airplane:

Does anyone really believe it would be impossible or even difficult for intel agents to phony-up or “photo-shop” phone calls.  The evidence is quite conclusive to the contrary.  Extensively documented in LooseChange.  Google it.

Larry, et al:

Nevermind that anyone who knows any engineering or physics at ALL knows 9-11 couldn’t have happened as the official version has it, or that our news is so censored that even Newsweek has a totally different issue here and in the EU. “A man convinced against his will is of his own opinion still.”

A videotaped confession by Bush and Cheney wouldn’t convince them of the truth.  They believe all the propaganda, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Typical NO ANSWER BY YOU in regards to the cell phone calls to love ones from the passengers on the plane that crashed in Penn.  Were all the passengers on these planes CIA agents and were the cell phone calls all to the CIA?  What a Laughable AHOLE you truly are.

For your own sake see a head doctor as fast as you can.  To say you are Nuts would not cover 10% of your problems.  I pity your family if you have any left!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ;>

In response: OK, this is probably your last chance to be civil. I’m guessing the web master may decide not to post any more rude and abusive submissions from you, Larry. I really don’t care. It’s entirely up to you to be civil. This final submission is more for the benefit of the cogent reader perhaps not yet entirely put off by where you’ve gone in this thread.

1. In the context of the entire 9/11 scenario, the calls to which you refer carry as little weight as do the flight manifests void of the the alleged hijackers’ names. From what source is confirmed the validity of these calls?

2. More importantly, from what source is confirmed the ability of the alleged hijackers to manually fly those highly complex aircraft in a manner that only air-show or top-gun fighter pilots could realistically do?

3. Moreover, from what source has come any sensible explanation for the Pentagon’s 2nd-to-none, anti-aircraft, missile defense not to respond to an air born attack?

4. To further the point, from what source has come any sensible explanation as to why, with the nation “under attack,” was the POTUS left to sit in a virtually unprotected, publicized location for half an hour, rather than being immediately spirited away to a secret secure location?

5. And finally, from what source has come any sensible explanation as to why, with the nation “under attack,” did Air Force One lift off from Sarasota with no fighter support and didn’t get fighter support for 45 minutes on its way to Barksdale Air Force Base?

Some might conclude that al Quede moles penetrated the upper echelons of US security. Those more informed counter the contrary: the real threat, indeed the authors of 9/11 are from within those upper echelons, from whence originates control of al Queda and the entire myth of Islamo-Fascism.

Comment on NONSENSE FROM Comment #36066 by Jackie T. Gabel on 11/01 at 7:14 pm

First My Comment.  Why can’t you answer what I asked YOU!  I KNOW---YOUR TOO DUMB!

NOW YOUR DUMBASS COMMENTS FOLLOW AFTER MY KIND WORDS OF HELP TO YOU “PLEASE SEE A HEAD DOCTOR----YOU ARE TRULY A SICKO!” By the Way SICKOS are NO FRIENDS OF MINE!  DONT COME NEAR ME PLEASE!

Andrew and Larry, calm down. I’m not your enemy. As much as you claim you’re trying to “help” me, I’m pretty sure I’d never want to meet you.  Moreover, I’m just trying to help “you” by directing you to Webster G. Tarpley, an expert on international terrorism with decades of experience. He directed the study “Chi ha ucciso Aldo Moro?” (Who Killed Aldo Moro?) which was commissioned by a member of the Italian government and published in Rome in 1978. [Aldo Moro was an ex-prime minister of Italy who was murdered by the “Red Brigades,” who were ultimately found out to be a front for a fascistic state terror group.]

Tarpley’s “George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography” is highly lauded. Robert D. Steele calls “9/11 Synthetic Terror - Made in USA” the best of the 770+ books he’s reviewed. http://www.amazon.com/gp/discussionboard/discussion.ht ml/ref=cm_rdp_st_rd/002-6919675-8200042?ie=UTF8&ASIN=09 30852370&store=yourstore&cdThread=Tx2ZU8WJJKCVSEV&a; mp;reviewID=R1LNNW9GMEILN5&iid=0930852370&displayTy;pe= ReviewDetail

Niggling over the credibility of certain publications or the factual minutia in your arguments (what’ s left after the ad hominem or straw man jousts) is pointless. What you’re missing is the long history of manipulation of patriotic hysteria: Guy Falks and the Gunpowder Gang, The Alamo, Battleship Maine, Reichstag Fire, Pearl Harbor, Gulf of Tonkin, USS Liberty and 9/11, to name a few. Look them up and you might get some idea of what you’re dealing with—tragedies that were either let, or made to happen; not always successfully, but invariably for the purposes of limiting civil rights or starting wars.

As for “conspiracy” theories, consider this one: A lunatic in a cave in Afghanistan organizes on his laptop a gang of 19 guys, who, with box cutters, defeat the 40-billion-dollar air defenses of the USA; moreover, a synopsis delivered to the media virtually whole cloth the day after it happened. If you buy that, all I can say is you watch too much TV.

This article is very accurate and perceptive. The response further confirms the ignorance and foolishness of the common man (or for that matter, the leaders).

The sundry rivalries in the ME today enables the US troops to be there in relative comfort. If these rivals were to join hands, US troops will not be able to go back at all.

US and Israel have sown and continue to sow the seeds of miltancy. Unfortunately, their children will end up paying the price for the lack of vision of their forebears.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ;

In response:  Sir, you are absolutely right in stating your inability to “help” me. Indeed, it is you, who does not understand my position, and could use some “help” in understanding what’s really going on.

To be sure, there’s a lot of terrorism in the world, more than ever before. Mostly it’s not about religion or culture. It is about saving the collapsing petro/drug-dollar. The pretext for the War of Terror is a myth.

Since the end of the Cold War, the myth of terror-based Islamo-Fascism is more aggressively cultivated than was the myth of terror-based Monolithic Communism. Al Queda is a virtual mirror of Gladio. Both were/are CIA/MI-6 controlled toward the same ends: a strategy of tension, destabilization and terror—all documented.

The strategy of tension worked so well in Europe, it is their weapon of choice in the Balkans and Middle East. Expect more and more of this. They will apply false flag terror mercilessly to manipulate every aspect of intelligence, policy, consent, dissent, in order to wage their endless black-ops/psy-ops War of Terror toward global hegemony and salvation of the Dollar. The only counter is exposure, prosecution and elimination of this cynical, lethal weapon of terror.

Support 911Truth. Study false flag terror. Uderstand it. Defeat it. It’s as much and information war as a shooting war; a war for your mind!

The plane that crashed in Penn had many on board who described the Jackasses who took command of the plane via Cell Phones.  Your right on one thing.  It was those damn 19 Arabs, many from Saudi Arabia, and only one of them per plane really knew how to fly the plane.  How we allowed those Bastards to come here and go to our flight schools is something that Clinton and Bush should be punished for.  Most of the Aholes who hijacked the planes wouldn’t not know the engine from the bathroom.  Unfortunately It only took one/plane to cause the disaster that is 9/11.

I’m afraid that you have not been keeping up with what has been happening in the former Yugoslavia, but that is not surprising since the conventional media is concentrating elsewhere. You therefore don’t know what a beautiful safe-haven and sanctuary for Islamists Bosnia and Kosovo have become...under the watchful eyes of Nato troops. Seriously, you don’t think Islamists (read terrorists) are going to tip that apple cart right now do you? Just go to Google and type in terrorist bosnia haven terrorists and see what you get.

Please go to an excellent post-war Wall Street Journal article by Daniel Pearle on what really happened there before Nato started bombing Serbia. It’s available:

http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/pearl 123199.htm

Pearl exposes most of the Muslim lies and rank war propaganda Nato (read the US) used to bring Serbia’s economy to rubble. Interestingly, about a year or so later, Pearl was captured by terrorist in Pakistan and butchered on video tape - is there a connection to his article? We’ll probably never know.

Then I recommend an article by Canadian Major General Lewis MacKenzie (Ret):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1112681/posts

If you still stick to your respective positions, I can’t help you, in fact no one can. Regards,

RE:  • Comment #35607 by Larry  on  10/31  at  6:01 pm;

The “ks” not the ‘t” but what do I care?—and there’s that ad hominem again—not too endearing, Larry. Well, I’ve heard worse and I’m too old to care. But since you brought it up, OK. Here’s the simple version:

1) Textbook scenario: inept patsies, protective moles, expert executioners and a compliant media; NOTE: those (documented) patsies simply could not do it; i.e. manually fly complex airliners like stunt pilots.

2) Pentagon & POTUS security stripped; NOTE: POTUS = President of the United States; with the nation “under attack” SS SOP Order No.1: Secure POTUS, no matter what; and no aircraft without a military transponder gets through the Pentagon anti-aircraft missile defense without a mole to take down the system.

3) “Angel is next” threat; NOTE: Angel = Air Force One, which lifted off from Sarasota without fighter support; again, not SOP with the nation “under attack.”

4) POTUS capitulates, calls Putin to give notice of the US post-9/11 Middle East attack and occupation plans and to warn that Russia had better not interfere.

Media insiders know all this. “Angle is next,” was even reported by NY Times’ William Safire, but not followed up on. Also, White House first confirmed and later denied it. Virtually none within the corporate media are genuinely free to follow this lead—job-loss threats, or worse, make 9/11Truth the media 3rd rail. Even so-called progressive voices (Chomskey, Vidal, Goodman, Moore, et al)—the Left Gatekeepers—won’t touch it. Nobody wants a lecture tour cancelled, foundation funding withdrawn, or worse. Welcome to 1984, Larry. Oh that’s right, you left. Good move!

Thank-You for writing in a little more realistic manner.  If you want others to understand what you are trying to say remember to KISS!

This is exactly what the neo-con fascist mademen want. They didn’t get us here overnight. Byrzinski ‘s Mujahideen policy got it rolling. The Iran Contra cabal carried it forward. Wesley Clark is complicit through 4 presidencies, and 9/11 is “The Big Wedding!”

The Strange Love’s in the shadows of Chantilly, Langley and Washington, for whom everyone’s a useful idiot, will continue to manipulate every fear and prejudice available.  False Flag Terror is their tool of choice, and the more terror they spread, the more compelling is their global War of Terror. We must break their cynical, lethal, dehumanizing weapon before their faces and render it impotent.

So Andrew, I haven’t heard about any Islamist terrorist attacks in Bosnia, or Slovenia, or any of the other ex-Yugoslav republics. (Aside from their home-grown violence, that is.) Haven’t heard of explosions or other terror in Italy, Austria, Hungary or other nearby nations targeted by the Islamist wave. Perhaps you could enlighten us with some specific dates, places and other details.

I have heard lots of people complain here about how Serbia was victimised by Bill Clinton, and how Slobodan Milosevic was not committing genocide against the people of the country he destroyed. Those massacres never happened, they claim. Australia is full of Chetniks who came here after World War II. Ustashe, too. All of them deny that they EVER did anything wrong. At least the Germans confessed to their genocide. Some people think they can get away with covering up, even as the bones are uncovered. Works for the Turks!

It does seem that Hedges was wrong about the deployment being a prelude for war. Perhaps that carrier group WAS just a redeployment. October is almost over and the only surprise is that the American people are finally sickening of Republican lies. I didn’t think the Bush crime family would attack Iran until before the 2008 election. They can cheat enough to retain power in this one without a war. When the U.S. economy implodes under the weight of its debt and layoffs, and hungry, angy people take to the3 streets, THAT will be the time to attack Iran. It will make a good excuse to postpose the elections.

You’ll look forward to that, won’t you mate? That way, the U.S. can lose THREE wars.

Chris’ judgment is flawed as manifested by his obtusely benighted support of the Muslim cause against the “brutal” Serbs. The upshot of our bombing Serbia’s infrastructure to rubble is that now Bosnia and Kosovo have become terrorist havens, sluices for drugs, crime, illegal immigration and Islamist terrorist pouring into Europe’s soft underbelly.

Hedges has never revisited his foolish support of Muslims spreading anti-Serb rank war propaganda so effectively as to enlist Nato to bomb Serbia so that etnic Albanians could steal Serb land. He never made a retraction or a correction to his erroneous assessments of the Balkan wars.

The man was a “useful idiot” for the Islamists throughout these conflicts and one now in making sophomoric doomsday prognostications about pipsqueak Iran. When it comes to its conventional force projection Iran cannot hope to stand up to the US military.

And, instead of the Middle East “exploding” in Bush’s face if we attack Iran - it will breathe a sigh of relief. The Middle East states know full well Iran’s Islamic State is leading them all to a path to ruin.

For the record, I’m not gonna bother with repeating your post here. It doesn’t merit repeating, for my money, so I’m just gonna make a comment on it.

Fwiw, I’m an honorably discharged veteran of the Vietnam Era. And for the record, I’ve already heard your simple-minded “America: Love It Or Leave It” Jingoistic bullshit -many- times before, -many- years ago.

What you’re spouting certainly ain’t anything new, kid. I -do- love my Country. I love it enough to have spent 6 years in the United States Army -defending- the right to Free Speech, which, if you are to be taken even remotely seriously (don’t hold your breath, btw), apparently only extends to Bush asskissers/apologists such as yourself. Pathetic.

Oh, and speaking of -asses-, try pulling -your- head out of “The Decider’s” buttocks and take a good look around you. Your Right-Wing buddies in Washington, D.C. have, these past 5 years, done a wonderful job of placing The United States of America smack dab into the toilet.

And now your old buddy “Dubbya” is reaching up to grab the flush handle…

How are you going, Larry? Do you live in Australia, by any chance? What state? I assume you’re down here, if you’re advising me about what Aussies think.

I’m in Melbourne, which tends to be more left-wing than other parts of the country. I work in a public hospital (got in on a work visa as a registered nurse.) As such, I get to meet a variety of Aussies: patients, their families and staffers. I talk to ridgy-didge Anglo-stock ockers, Greeks and Italians who immigrated here after World War II, and Asians who jumped off the boat in the past decade. I believe I deal with a cross-section of society.

You’re right that Aussies are thankful for the U.S. saving them from the Japs in WW II. The hospital where I work was BUILT by Americans in 1943. Older patients remind me of that. In general, Aussies tend to like Americans as individuals—especially when they find out that Yank hates George Bush. I’m the token “seppo” where I work, and I talk loudly about politics, so I get all the commentary about Americky.

But you know what? ALL the Aussies say America has “lost the plot” as the Aussie slang has it. “Gone off the rails.” They find U.S. policy to be horrid; view the (other) States as a place full of crime and weirdness, and worry that John Howard is leading Oz down the American path to disaster. They think of the U.S. the way you would a formerly favourite uncle who turned out to be a child molester.

But maybe it’s different where you are. North Shore Sydney—lotsa monied Liberals there. Mining town in WA? Resource exploiters lean more conservative. I’m curious about the attitude toward America in your part of Oz.

The real question to be asked by AMERICANS is --ARe these wars to seize and contol the oil fields going to be worth what AMERICANS and possibly many from other nations are going to have to pay in blood and treasure and FREEDOM and sacrifice-- OR are they going to turn out simply as a way to ONCE AGAIN make a certain FEW factions wealthy at the expense of The People. There is much to agree with here. Certainly those that think that they can do it with air power alone, or even together with the puny ground forces we have under arms, are off their rocker. Bush is more or less a failed leader, a paragon of mediocrity in a time that requires excellence. Victory is possible (albeit costly as the article indicates) but not until the country (and the economy) is dedicated to a wartime footing on the scale of WW2. Forget anything less than a million man army.
This would require leadership that Bush is not capable of providing. Maybe Hillary if she can park that playboy in a looney bin, or Giuliani.
I’m a little uncomfortable with the author’s diatribe against right-wing Christians, since I consider myself one, but I think it is true that many of them are misled by a misinterpretation of scripture.
If I could advise the author, I would suggest that war is not always avoidable, even if everyone involved wants peace, such as in WW 1. A terrible war here is probably necessary, but American arrogance (which the author correctly brings up) may lead us to do what we did in Iraq, using insufficient means leading to defeat. And we can be defeated, with consequences far more terrible than victory, which would be bloody enough.-JL

Two world wars are originated from the West. Two atom bombs were dropped by the US.

If there is a trajactory, the third world war is likely to start from the west, with or without nukes. War is an expensive undertaking. Given the nation’s current financial weakness including deficits and more than 30% dollar devaluation vis-a-vis Euro since 2002, another war would tank the economy and end the nation as the lone superpower for good. If it happens, then people here would be poorer than those living in former eastern blocs.

It’s scary to hear the man says god told him to go to Iraq. What if he or future prez wakes up and says, god told me to nuke?

Jeff, let’s not forget too though that the U.S. has been involved in state-sponsored terrorism as well, overthrowing democratically elected governments for decades by force when it suited big economic interests. Israeli Zionists too have used state sponsored terrorism making no distinction between combatants and non-combatants. Bush’s OIl war based on lies so far has claimed reportedly somewhere near 500,000 civilians. That is terrorism plain and simple.

To equate Iranian nuclear capability with that of Isreal is beyond the most naive “thought process” I can imagine. Iran has been the sponsor of international terror for decades and has a stated goal of wiping out Isreal as do several of Irael’s neighbors. What part of international terror or the destruction of Israel don’t you get. What part of democratically elected government don’t you get. It is opinions like yours that scare people into supporting people like George Bush and handing him his catastrophic domestic policies.

I too will be completely dismayed if the United States makes a strike against Iran, for it will reveal such depths of ignornace and injustice in the leaders of the world’s most powerful nation as to indeed bring the end of civilisation closer.  I have only two hopes.  One is almost paradoxical; Bush has little time left in his Presidency, and he will have one eye on the history books and the talk shows and the lecture circuits, and will not want to go down as the guy who brought it all down in flames when he wants to go on Oprah.  Secondly, the world powers have possessed nuclear weapons since 1945 and only used them twice, mainly due to the obvious realisation that they cannot be used to win anything.  In their case, the means dwarfs the end.  I only hope that realisation (which must have made sense even to a fanatic like Stalin) remains valid for the new players in the game.

Hey, Bukko: Yeah, it’s amazing how our friends on the Right snap when some unwary soul nudges them toward even a brief glimpse of reality, isn’t it? As up-Chuck’s counterpart Hondo has amply demonstrated, fundie faux-patriot’s can’t think and, ergo, can’t hold their own in an argument, so say one itty-bitty thing that suggests they might not have an exclusive patent on The Truth, then watch as that little trap door in their skull pops open and out come a-crawlin’ all these freakishly deranged, if not outright homicidal, crotchets.  (To his very limited credit, Hondo never threatened to whack anyone who challenged his views.)

The Prolixin IM sounds eminently---legally---justifiable to me, obviously accompanied by an order for four-point restraint in leather straps (alas, to be periodically released by staff---unlike chuck, we need to follow the law). By the way, that’s my opinion based on years of professional experience (same as yours)---as opposed to a spontaneous, and frighteninly “sincere,” declaration of intent to harm another.

So deep and unreachable is chuck’s illness that he actually imagines the rest of the world shares his delusions---thus “no jury” would convict him for carrying out his violent threats. Tell that to that fundie anti-abortionist who murdered a doctor and nurse a few years ago and was subsequently executed. Bet he thought he was immune to punishment, too. After all, God was on his side. Bet chuck has martyr fantasies of the same sort.

Yeah, Christian and Muslim fanatics---scratch either one and underneath you’ll find the same black heart of a steely-eyed killer.  And some think never the twain shall meet? Think again.

Bush and every republican I have ever known or heard about are trouble makers. They are vicious aggressors who use fear and hate-mongering to demonize others for their own advantage. At one time or another, they have demonized blacks, and all other minorities, women who have abortions, labor unions, the poor, the French, liberals, democrats, welfare mothers, environmentalists, intellectuals, and virtually anyone who has had the courage to question their selfishness and greed, their motives, methods and never ending hate campaigns.

Most of their hatred is directed at those who object to their “survival of the fittest” mentality. They see compassion and tolerance as weakness, and yet they pretend to be the most devout of Christians.

Bla Bla Bla.  You sound like a drunk teen age valley girl describing the prom.

Brevity my friend, brevity.

We Americans are proud of our country, just not of our leaders.  We support our troops, just not their orders.  This is possible regardless of what the fear mongers in Washington DC tell you.

The USA has historically done many good things.  But in the last 6 years we have changed direction and become a bully on the world scene.  Maybe you should quit listening to the radical Muslims and listen to our leaders (which is almost as scary).

Everything they do is ordained by god.  Our leadership is as fanatic about spreading Christianity (conveniently camouflaged as democracy) as the radical Muslims are about spreading Islam.  No difference.

The problem you do not seem to understand is our administrations lie to us.  We never know when we are being lied to or not.  This makes it hard to support your leaders especially when common pukes like us can see the error or our ways but our Ivey league genius leaders do not.

Simply backing your leaders with “blind faith” is what got the followers of the Jim Jones cult in trouble.

If you think that disagreeing with bad leaders and bad policy and immoral behavior on the part of our leaders is helping the enemy, then go to hell.  You are falling for the spin from the current admin.  Every time anyone disagrees with anything, they are labeled a traitor, helping the enemy, unpatriotic, democratic, anti-Christian……

This gets very old.  It is our job to carefully watch our leaders, analyze what they do and say and call bull shit when necessary.  If we do not, we are not true patriots.

If America is not careful, it will fall.  Not by radical Islamic fundamentalists, not by nuclear bombs, not by terrorists, but by our own belief in our god given superiority and sense of entitlement.

Sincerely,

Proud to be an American, but lately, embarrassed to be an American.

Hello Kibble! Isn’t it ironic how this staunch American patriot who says “I’ll kill you and stand over your body until the police arrive” is proposing to do the EXACT SAME THING A MUSLIM TERRORIST DID? By that, I mean the whackjob who stabbed and shot Theo van Gogh two years ago in Holland. (He’s been convicted, imprisoned and is probably smoking some Amsterdam medical hashish now...) He was upset about the film van Gogh made about Muslim oppression of women. Murder to suppress free speech—finally something that can unite hardcore Muslims and Christians!

Is it cyberstalking to say I’d like to give this guy 40 mg of Prolixin decanoate IM? Failing that, I’d like to point him to the Truthdig thread about the rise of fascism. He’d be encouraged…

The main focus should be on the Project For A New American Century’s (PNAC), Rebuilding America’s Defenses. It is a public document and available at the following site:

http://www.newamericancentury.org/

Anyone can read it for themselves & come to your individual conclusion on how it affects current foreign policy.

Regarding Comment #28656 by Gijsbert Brandeveld:

Yes; isn’t it amazing how easily Israel coopts even the BBC in its propaganda drive to justify the upcoming US/Israeli war against Iran?

I’m really sick of living inside Israel’s right-wing propaganda bubble. Even the Israelis hear more contrasting opinions on this matter than we do. We’re not allowed to have a grownup discussion about this.

We’re just supposed to cough up the funds and deliver our sons, no questions asked.

Re Comment #28244 by chuck kroll:

PUBLISH THIS AS A WARNING TO ANYONE THINKING ABOUT COMMITTING A SIMILAR CRIME:

You, Chuckie, as someone who’s spent some time studying cybercrime, news flash, knuckle-dragger---you just broke the law!:

“If anything happens to one of those kids, I’m coming after you. And I’m putting it in writing, I don’t care. God help your fagot [sic] communist ass if something happens to even one of those brave kids. I know where you work, it can’t be that hard to find someone as ugly as you. . . You had better pray (opps sorry bad word for you darwinist’s [sic])that nothing happens to even one of those kids on our ships or I will take you out myself, and stand over your body to the police arrive. No jury in this nation would convict me I’m sure. You Bastard.”

You’re wrong about that jury, by the way. See, legally, Chuckie baby, it’s OK to engage in name-calling, even on an illiterate-yahoo level like yours. (No grammar and spellcheck function on the ole PC there, bud?) Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names, etc.

What you can’t do is exactly what you did here: threaten people with physical violence. Having worked as a psych nurse, I know your type all too well: a True Believer (a “Christian, too, of course) who will use any pretext to (in your own words) take out someone who challenges your rigid world view with an “unacceptable” idea or “subversive” opinion. You fit the profile of the authoritarian personality to a blood-spattered “T.”

Since you’re clearly disturbed and since it’s obviously too late to have your meds upped, I’m going to report you to the authorities. Cyberstalking is a crime. Scheer and Hedges may take the high road here, but I’m not following their lead. (Like most attack poodles, you’re probably an armchair chickenhawk like your hero Dubya and are hiding behind a false ID. We’ll soon find out.) Hear those cell doors closing? Get ready to feel your own version of Gitmo, asshole.. . .

FYI, trog-boy: “Threatening or harassing email should NEVER be excused as a prank. Although it is rare for a person’s behavior on the Internet to spill over into the real world, threats should ALWAYS be taken seriously. It is DANGEROUS to dismiss threatening email, believing the threats will never be acted upon. Even a slim chance of being hurt should be considered too risky to ignore. Remember that threatening or harassing someone through e-mail IS JUST AS ILLEGAL AS DOING SO IN AN OFFLINE FORM.”

Yes, a wider war in the middle east is most likely, but it is a tempest in a teapot compared to what’s coming.  The real international conflicts will be over water, not oil, and they will be desperate battles of survival, not lifestyle.  The fittest will survive and the weak will perish. There is no God, there is no Jesus and there is no apocalypse.

We must first of all be aware that if the state of Israel would come out firmly against starting a war with Iran, Bush would quickly drop his war plans.

It is a sad but unavoidable fact that because of our internal politics, the US would never doing such a thing unless it were consistent with what Israel wants.

In fact this war is fervently desired by Israel’s most prominent “supporters” here. Therefore, we should concentrate our energies on persuading not Bush but AIPAC, and the government of Israel itself, that such a war would be a complete disaster for Israel.

This shouldn’t be too hard to do, since many sane people who are very pro-Israel believe that such a war WOULD be a disaster for Israel.

(Never mind that it would be a disaster for the USA, of course; that’s not even worth consideration...).

George Soros has plans to start a liberal alternative to AIPAC soon. Perhaps this group can help save America from committing national suicide for AIPAC’s right-wing “pro-Israel” agenda.

The confidence that Iran displays makes me think they already have deployable nuclear weapons purchased from the former Soviet Union garage sales in Belarus and Kahzakstan. Like the ones Lebed spoke of before he got choppered out.

I have always believed that Iran has nukes and that the west is about to step on a hornet’s nest. As a Vietnam vet, I am wondering when America will protest. I attended tha “World Can’t Wait” protest in San Francisco and I was amazed that the people who will be most affected, by the next war, were clueless and going about their mundane lives....pitiful!
