Mark Ruffalo: ‘Step Down, Mr. Bush’

Posted on Oct 3, 2006

The following is a speech given by actor Mark Ruffalo on Oct. 2 at the Great Hall of Cooper Union, New York City.

Ruffalo spoke at an emergency meeting of World Can’t Wait—Drive Out the Bush Regime held in response to passage of Bush’s torture bill, and in preparation for protests on Thursday, Oct. 5, in over 180 cities nationwide. (Truthdig is reprinting it exclusively with the permission of WorldCantWait.)

Others speaking that night included actress Olympia Dukakis, Guantanamo prisoner lawyer Bill Goodman, and Craig Murray, the former British ambassador to Uzbekistan who blew the whistle on U.S.-sponsored torture. Also, Ruffalo read a statement from Sean Penn.  Activist Daniel Ellsberg, author Alice Walker and hip-hop artist / activist Boots Riley spoke at a simultaneous meeting in Oakland, Calif.

Ruffalo’s speech:

Transcript:

I really don’t want to be up here today.

I want to believe that the people we chose to lead our country are doing it in a way that is responsible, fair, and in the interests of the people who put them in office.

I want to believe that the checks and balances that our fore fathers sacrificed their lives and well being for, that document that has held this country together for so long and has guarded us from tyranny, the Constitution, would be upheld by those leaders and they would treat it with the same devotion that those who wrote it did.

I want to live my life and spend my time with my children and family and friends and go to sleep at night sweetly knowing that I live in America and that this system with all its problems works.

I want to believe that our government cares for the whole, represents the whole and not just a few.  I don’t want to be up here today, but I know that I have to be up here I am up here for my children and yours, I am here in service to my country, because this administration that has come into power by seemingly more and more questionable means does not represent the whole, is not devoted to the Constitution and ultimately does not represent the people.

I don’t want to be up here today but I feel I have exhausted the way we have been taught to affect change in the way our government conducts itself.  I’m here because we, the people, are not being heard.

I have voted, I have called, I have written letters, I have given of myself with my time and my money and still we have a government that refuses to respect the Constitution, a government that engaged in a war with illegal justification, a government that abandoned it’s own during Hurricane Katrina, a government that now condones torture a government that favors big corporations before it favors my children or yours.
Step down, Mr. Bush, we are not torturers.

Step down Mr. Bush, we are not war profiteers.

Step Down Mr. Bush, we care for our children and our poor.

Step Down Mr. Bush, we uphold our Constitution.

Step Down, we are not Republicans or Democrats or Independents or Socialists or Communists we are not Black or White we are not Red or Blue.

We are Americans and we demand you step down.

“Nora”:

So, it pains you that some of us are “vicious” and “disagreeable”?  I volunteer you to experience a session of waterboarding—ASAP.  (Do you even know what “waterboarding” is?  If not, spend less time praying and more time getting informed with the basics of current events.)  I volunteer you to be on the next plane out of the country . . . the next extraordinary rendition.  (Do you even know what “extraordinary rendition” is, Nora?  If not, pray less and read more, dear.)

Waterboarding; extraordinary rendition; lying to the American people to justify an invasion that was unnecessary, and that has resulted in tens of thousands of Iraqis (and others) dying needlessly and horribly; Pat Robertson; Dick Cheney; Karl Rove; Rush Limbaugh.  THESE things, and these people, are vicious.

Objecting—even objecting strenuously, and ANGRILY (as Jesus sometimes
did)—is neither vicious nor “disagreeable” (especially in a democracy).

It is merely the least we can do.

(By the way, dear heart:  The third paragraph of your comment is completely correct.  It also applies, in spades, to the Republican crowd that has been commandeering Congress, and public opinion, for the past several years.)

Nora, you have been deceived, just as it was prophesied

The man you pray for is the great deceiver and he is surrounded by other liars. That they have lied, repeatedly, about extremly important issues, has been proven, over and over again.

Wake up, my friend, before it is too late!

We are fast becoming polarized between those who choose to obey God’s laws and those who want to completely disregard them.  If that were not enough, those who turn away from God don’t want the rest of us to be able to express our beliefs.

I pray for our country and our President daily.  I believe he is an honorable man who is doing what he believes to be right, regardless of polls or political considerations.  He is exactly the kind of man I want as President.  It pains me to hear such viciousness directed towards our President.

I believe as Americans we can disagree without being disagreeable.  Too many of our elected officials have forgotten that they are to represent the people.  They are too concerned about getting elected again and again and again.  That is not how our Country was set up.  We were to be governed by citizen representatives, not professional politicians.

I am going to say the same things that I have said over and over on Yahoo and other web sites:  For once, just once, I would like to see someone like Mr. Ruffalo complain about how our soldiers are treated by the Islamic Extremists and al-Qaeda.  I hear no outcry from you, Mr. Ruffalo, decrying the pracitce of beheading innocent journalists and filming it for all the world to see.  All you people are doing is encouraging people like Osama bin-Laden, Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong IIl and their ilk to keep defying everyone and everything good.  I will not feel the least bit sorry for any of you when the Islamic extremists, who have sworn to “kill the infidels” are running rampnat in this country and then you will be crying that our government didn’t do enough to stop these people.  Who are you going to blame then, Mr. Ruffalo???  Certainly not the people that have continually closed their eyes and minds to what is happening.  This is all out war, Mr. Ruffalo, whether you like it or not.  I think you and people like you should decide which country and under which government you want to live…..I doubt you will be able to say anything even close to what you have said here under the Islamic type of government.  I am betting you would probably be dead.  Wake up, you poor, ignorant, fools!!!!

Go Mark!  I wish I had some confidence that the public would hold Bush and Mr. Unconscionable ROVE responsible by kicking them out of office.  Sadly, I believe the mainstream media would not let it happen and the public does not have the will.  We should take a lesson from the Amish who don’t live by violence and have certainly put all of the so called “Christian” leaders to shame with thier reactions to the loss of their children.  I’m so ashamed of what we’ve done to the people of Iraq all for the sake of oil and special interests.  It is staggering that Bush stops at nothing and has no remorse for the national debt that only the middle and lower class will pay for.  We didn’t get a tax deduction, it was a tax deferral to another administration and our children.  I’m sick that we fail to look at “real” solutions.  To get a handle on many of the world’s problems, we have to CONTROL our populations and educate other countries in how to do that.  We shouldn’t let our self-serving religious leaders to keep us in the dark ages about population control.

I am just an ordinary, everyday American born citizen. Yes, I want my voice to be heard, but people like myself are overlooked in more ways than one. I have a great job, I am not rich, but I am not poor. That puts me in the same class as the poor anyway, because who cares what I have to say?

As this comment states:

All well and good. Passion is great. But how do you make people THINK. Too many in this country are intellectually lazy.”

All Americans are considered stupid and intellectually lazy, but that is furtherest from the truth. We have alot we want to say and do to improve our country but noone gets heard unless they are in the “my money can buy anything” category. That is the truth.

All well and good. Passion is great. But how do you make people THINK. Too many in this country are intellectually lazy. They want quick answers. They want to be promised the moon. They don’t know how to keep an open mind and investigate the people promising the “good things”. There are also those who have a glimmer of the negatives but are so selfish that they don’t give a damn about politicians buying them.
Sorry to be cynical. Sometimes I just want to take these closed minded individuals and shake them by the shoulders, crying out, “think about it and for more than a few minutes”. Sigh!

Why does it matter what the career path of this writer is?  He is an American citizen, concerned about the direction of our nation’s domestic and foreign policies - do you believe his career choice makes him any less worried about his family, his friends, his neighbors, his country?  How arrogant!  What next - if you’re a garbage collector (pardon me, a sanitary engineer)then you’re not good enough to express an opinion about how your elected representatives are “representing” you?  Or any other career, for that matter - what about the people who don’t have a career at the moment - retired folks, disabled folks, students.  Don’t you get it?  We’re all of us, willing or not, in this TOGETHER!!!  If/when this nation goes down into catastrophic failure or fascist state or whatever - WE"LL ALL BE IN IT TOGETHER - Democrat, Republican, Independent, non-voter and voter alike - together in the mess these hooligans will leave behind for us ALL to clean up somehow, some way.  It will be Katrina all over again, on an unimaginable scale. We do not deserve to be so awfully treated by our leaders, so shamelessly manipulated and lied to - yet, if we let the SOB’s get away with it - “finish out their terms and move on” - then we will deserve the aftermath.  I say “Accountability for the Party of Accountability - Values for the Party of Values - Morals for the Party of Morals” - If they are not indicted and convicted for their admitted crimes (not to mention the ones a thorough and honest investigation will certainly uncover) - then there’s going to be a big problem explaining to us why ANYONE should be imprisoned for breaking any law.  Or is it, that the bigger the crime, the smaller the penalty?  Hmmmmmm.  Maybe crime really does pay, ya think?

I agree whole-heartedly with the call for Bush to resign. It should go further to Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice and others.

However, I am also a realist, and I think we will all be behind razor wire before Bush or any of the rest of them step down.

Much as I agree with Mark Ruffalo, that Bush (and Cheney) resigning “for the good of the Nation” would be wonderful, I have to say this:
He’s an actor. Who gives a rat’s ass what he thinks?

It’s only the republicans the elect actors and entertainers to office: Ronald Reagan, Gopher, Clint Eastwood, Sonny Bono, Ahnold, Steve Largent, Jim Bunning (aka MORON!), Jack Kemp. Who’d I miss?

I’ll give a pass to Fred Dalton Thompson—after all BEFORE he was an actor he was Sam Dash’s Republican counterpart during Watergate—and did a fine job at that.

On the Dems’ side? Bill Bradley—but unlike Bunning who is uneducated and intellectually TOTALLY incurious (like Mad King George) Bradley was a Rhodes Scholar—which kinda negates his being famous for athletics.  Then there was Justice Byron “Whizzer” White, who made a fantastic reputation AFTER football before going to the Court.

Jerry Springer was a politician before he was a personality, and now he’s not a politician.

While I feel very sorry for the Lebanese people—they’ve been the Poland of the Middle East—caught in the middle, I feel NO sympathy for Hezbollah and would gladly see them wiped off the face of the earth.  Without Hezbollah, Israel and Lebanon are able to, if not be friends, at least be at peace.  Let’s not forget it was Hezbollah’s illegal, brutal and TOTALLY unjustified actions that set of the Israeli invasion.  But terrorists like Hezbollah ALWAYS use the general population as shields. Why? Because they are COUNTING on the Israelis (or Americans) to be more humane, more caring about civilians than THEY are.  They don’t give a SHIT about the Lebanese people, or if they die.  All they want is their support and their bodies as shields, so when the OTHER side goes after them anyway, they can always count on condemnation by the world of Israel, rather than Hezbollah who made it SO much worse for their own people.  After all, Hezbollah is Shi’a and most Lebanese Moslems are Sunni—and they HATE each other with a passion—While you are reading Nir Rosen, you may want to read how the Sunni think Shi’a “aren’t real Moslems”.  Plus they BOTH hate the Christian Lebanese and don’t give a shit about them either.

What I don’t understand is how the Israelis made such a mess of it. There is NO way Hezbollah can resist the Israeli military.  Who was advising them? Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and Dick Cheney?  How ELSE could they have screwed up such a slam dunk.

I believe Mark is right; we the people have the right and responsibility to remove from office any president who does not uphold the Constitution. Unfortunately, Bush is just the visible tip of the iceberg. Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Myers, and a few others all should be held accountable for their war crimes. Not just for invading Iraq under false pretenses, but also for conducting the false-flag operation of 9/11.

Unfortunately, the White House, Congress and the complicit Global corporations et al. will never step down and will do everything in their power to oppress popular opinion, the failed presidential elections in 2000 and 2004 proved it. Bush was never elected by the popular vote, end of story.
The only hope, IMHO, is a military coup like Thailand had, listen to any of the speeches the Army Generals, Batiste and the Marine Colonel gave as testimony before Congress.
How much longer can our military be expected to do their jobs under the current administration.
Any major public uprising will be met with a serious police action with good citizen’s expressing, rightfully their discontent with the government. Subsequently being rounded up and sent to the secret prison holding facilities the Halliburton is already building here in the United States for just such an occasion, scary..

It will take a combined effort on the part of a disgruntled military and a fed up populace to bring the curtain down on this farce we currently call a government by the people and for the people.
The entire Congressional and White House leadership of the United States of America are all in violation of their oaths to office!
Arrest them all!
The Democrats, though a somewhat lesser evil, aren’t much better. Doing a little research we now have Cuomo, Democrat, running for Governor of New York. When, as a former HUD official, $59 Billion disapppeared under his watch, Mr. Murtha who came out in opposition to continuing our Iraq fiasco, avoided prosecution for bribery in the Abascam scandal in the 80s by turning states evidence….
I could go on, Americans need honest, truthful leadership that’s not beholding to Big Business or Political interests!

The only person who dishonors President bush “is” President bush.(and of course the constant stream of moral, ethical republicans we see daily either going to jail, lying or having internet sex with young boys!)

After all bush has done, he still has mindless followers like you who are running around like turkey lurkey saying the sky is falling. (Or better yet, the bad terrorists are in your very neighborhood, let me protect you)

He has sheep like you that are so afraid of your own shadow that he can and is doing anything he wants.  And, if anyone criticizes or even asks him to explain his rational, they are branded as a traitor or unpatriotic. (That’s fascism)

If it were not for 911 george bush would have been a 1 term president and a bad one at that.  Without a war on, he would have accomplished nothing, and he has accomplished not much more than that with war on.  War gives him enough power to get what he wants done. (Not what America Wants?)

The best thing that ever happened to george bush is that we got attacked on 9.11. It gave our hick gunslinger president a chance to appear tough. (Even though he is just a puppet for Cheney, Rumsfield, Rice….)

Even with his “war time power”, he has managed to take America into another Viet Nam.  If we cut and run (bad) if we stay and fight (bad).  Either way we are screwed.  Americans are dying in the Dirt for george, not for freedom or liberty.

American is no safer now than it was prior to 911, we are just more aware since bush tells us every night about how much danger we are in.

Saying bush is to be given credit for no attacks since 911 is like saying Nazi Germany has not attacked since 1945 so Donald Rumsfeld must be a good secretary of defense!

America is embarrassing itself and morons like you are the primary reason.

Once again, proud to be an American, but lately quite embarrassed!

Thanks you Rodoflo for reminding us that most republicans feel:

-Any question is a conspiricy.
-Any lack of support is helping the Terroists.
-Any differing opinions are “playing politics”
-Any differing opinions are un-patriotic
-Anyone who is not a republican is not a Christian
-Anyone who questions our leader(about any subject) is weak on terror

Was it not Congressman Foley who castigated Bill Clinton for haveing sex with another consenting adult and lying about it(which 99.999% would) only to turn around and have internet sex with a 16 year old boy??????

I am so glad the republicans are bringing morals and values back to America.  Otherwise, it would be hard to put up with their shit!

How can America accept a president, his cronies and a GOP who lied them into an illegal war and let 9/11 happen just on their watch? They needed a Pearl Harbor size event to justify their everlasting War on Terror, giving them the opportunity for big war profiteering and putting aside the international and national laws and Geneva Conventions. George Bush wanted to enter the history books as a war president, compensating the fact that he was too much of a coward to go to Vietnam for his country!Impeach Bush and Cheney.

The “We’re keeping America safe from terrorists” and, in virtually every speech trying to tie 9/11 with the ill-fated “War In Iraq” that we started without proper evidence, simply won’t wash anymore except for those diehards who have “always voted Republican” and “I support our president, right or wrong”. Instead of taking time off work to dishonor a President who has the backbone and C.O. Jones to protect this country against radical Islamic suicide worshipers, how about doing something meaningful?  For example, volunteer to go to Iraq and work to iron out the differences between the Sunni and Shi’ite?  With all of your profound insight and ideas, I’m certain you’d have the problems resolved in about a week.

Fine words by Mark Ruffalo, but are the American people listening???

I live in Europe (I’m American born, but because of Bush and those that support him, I no longer call myself an American), and from here I can only see the degrading of what I though America was all about. I dare not enter the country because I would be forced to say what is on my mind. I am too afraid to be arrested, and become a disappeared, or be killed by a Bush supporter.

I can only hope that Americans will wake up and hear Mark’s words, and the words of others who speak against Bush and his evil regime, and do what is right. Take America back and bring it to what the founding fathers meant, and hoped, America would represent, for itself, as for the rest of the world. A country that is truly a Democracy, with Freedom, Equality and Justice for all.

Right now all I see is a country that is lead by an right wing extremist, with the loony religious christian right following right behind.

the wheels of the lord grind slow, but exceeding fine…. sooner or later, everybody knows everything.

I still want to know what Bush I was doing in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.
Why did WTC 7 collapse?
Where are the engines of the plane that hit the Pentagon?
When will Jeb be prosecuted for fixing the 2000 election?

When will the corporations realize populism is the coming thing; that we, the people, mean business.
