BP and the Three Stooges Defense

Although U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier found BP liable for “gross negligence” last week, some U.S. media failed to mention that he let BP off the hook on punitive damages. And that stuns me, given that the record seems to identify enough smoking guns to roast a sizable pig.

Cease-Fires in Which Violations Never Cease

The regular pattern is for Israel to disregard whatever agreement is in place—while Hamas observes it—until a sharp increase in Israeli violence elicits a Hamas response, followed by even fiercer brutality. These escalations, which amount to shooting fish in a pond, are called “mowing the lawn” in Israeli parlance.

Ocean Acidification and GHGs Hit Record Levels

New scientific evidence of the highest greenhouse gas concentrations on record is compounded by the revelation that oceans are acidifying faster than at any time in the last 300 million years.

Obama’s ISIS Actions Are Defensive, Despite Rhetoric of Going on Offensive

President Obama’s speech launching his war on ISIS avoided the qualifications that he had earlier made, which had produced caviling inside the Beltway from politicians who confuse careless belligerency with decisiveness.
