The 2000 Election All Over Again

If we seemed doomed to refight the battles from eight years ago, perhaps it’s because Al Gore’s warnings about a Bush presidency turned out to be so prescient.

What ‘Good Time Charlie’ Brought

Tom Hanks charms his way through “Charlie Wilson’s War,” playing a corrupt congressman who improbably becomes involved in supporting the Afghan mujahedeen (who later became the Taliban) in their battle against the Soviets, but some glaring omissions were made in the movie’s plot—including a key connection to the volatile situation unfolding in Pakistan in the wake of Benazir Bhutto’s death.

The Iowa Caucus Con

Political reporters are not widely embraced, but in Iowa, they are eagerly welcomed when they show up to cover the state’s unique system of selecting presidential nominees.  The reason is simple: The media is a co-conspirator in a con, the Iowa caucuses.

An Enabling Virtue

Hope is an overused word and an underrated virtue. We “hope” for all kinds of things, from the trivial to the profound. But hope is both a habit and a discipline. It is an orientation toward the future based on the conviction that we live in an ultimately trustworthy universe.

The FCC’s Christmas Gift to Big Media

On Dec. 18, the five commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission met in Washington, D.C., and, by a 3 to 2 vote, passed new regulations that would allow more media consolidation. This, despite the U.S. public’s increasing concern over the nation’s media being controlled by a few giant corporations.
