This week the Truthdig panel talks about the racial politics behind the arrest of high-profile Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., who himself said, “I was cast by him [the policeman] in a narrative and he didn’t know how to get out of it.” Also, pop culture critic Sheerly Avni gives a big thumbs up to a new and telling film about the Iraq war, “The Hurt Locker.”

I find in the UK we have police who do their job and then the idiots who enjoy the power but I also find black people tend to pounce far too easily on anything that might be against being black.
I sorry but it’s very tiring and really it only makes me want hate black people more, asian people in the UK do the very same thing.
The arguement of race is like the holocaust and we cant touch a jewish person.
When such people whine they want a beautiful future for humanity yet they still want segregation.
A black militant is to be respected as a freedom fighter for his race.
A muslim militant is a terrorist against everything good
and a white militant is a neo-nazi.
It only makes the divide worse

Sylvia,  I challenge you to provide on shred of evidence that the cop is a racist.

The cop is not arrogant for refusing to apologize if no apology is owed.

The police officer was doing his job, exactly by the book.

Gates reaction to the officer doing his job properly was to verbally berate the officer and call him a racist, for doing nothing other than exactly what he should have done in responding to a reported break-in.

Gates should have showed his ID,  thanked the officer for looking out for his property, and that should have been the end of it.

Gates owes the officer and apology, as do you and all of you people throwing around slurs like ‘racist’ with absolutely no evidence to support it.

Was it James Harris questioning why we are so blithely accepting of a police state? Why the hell should a police officer have the right to even TOUCH me unless I am committing a crime? And I, as the citizen who pays the officer’s salary, should have every right to criticize his behaviour. “Show me your badge” should be the FIRST thing we get to say, and the answer should be “Yes sir, right away.” Sheeeesh, it seems we have forgotten the whole “protect and SERVE” gig.

Gates returning terminating a trip from China.  When was the last time that man had rested… horizontally.  Even I can feel the urgency…for a bath, and horizontal reclination.  Little “Servi-motors”...in the consciousness, over which he had no control apparently began to work.  I just want to lay-down….and surrender myself…Gates intoned….unconsciouisly…..and now this “Hassle”.  Gates…. returning from a Faculty Meeting..at the University…and a different scenario.

Obviously, Gates was the racist trying to trump up a lawsuit to stir up the black community.  All the cop was doing is making sure (Gates) house wasn’t being robbed!  Any NORMAL person would politely identify themselves and THANK the officer for being diligent about performing his job.

Obviously, had President Obama given enough thought to this ugly incident he wouldn’t have made the “stupidity” statement regarding Boston police.  Though he was dead right, it backfired and he was given grief over it.  Every member of my family as well as my neighbors have had much harsher words in discription of the officer.  His arrogance in refusing to apologize to Professor Gates says it all.  He is a bigot and a racist; the type of cop who gives a whole force a bad name.

I am happy that Obama has asked Professor Gates to visit the White House.  Perhaps it will help to deflect the fray that is possible because the cop refuses to be human.
