The Lose-Lose WarPosted on Jun 12, 2007
Dr. Dahlia Wasfi joins Robert Scheer and James Harris to discuss the past, present and future of the Iraq war. Wasfi, who has twice visited Iraq during the occupation, says it is only a matter of time and casualties before the U.S. leaves: “It’s really simple: You bring the troops home, they stop dying there.” Subscribe to Truthdig PodcastsIf you don't have iTunes, Visit the Podcast Archives Previous item: Getting Personal With AIDS and Africa Next item: The Forgotten War on Drugs and Election '08 Elsewhere: . By Ed, August 31, 2007 at 8:25 am # Absolutely fantastic. Why can’t we get Dr. Dahlia Wasfi on the radio/TV over here in the UK? It would be a real change of pace for the BBC to air arguments like this on their current affairs programmes especially when put by such an intelligent and formiddable speaker.
By David Dixit, July 28, 2007 at 8:28 am # If only more Americans would listen to this woman… When will Americans understand that their ‘culture’ and way of life is not eagerly sought after the world over ? From your cheap ersatz food to your military might, please go home and stay there!
By shaz, July 3, 2007 at 11:44 am # more war crimes
By HelenL, June 30, 2007 at 6:40 pm # I agree with Dr Wasfi, and that is that we need to get out. We have spent millions on the effort to rebuild Irag and we are still hated, even more then before. The suffering that the Iragi people were subjected to by Sadam Hussian was quote their “civilization” and their way of life, and preferred over the US intervention. We need to bring our service people back home and invest our money back into our government. We need to give them their lives back, as quickly as possible. In the future America needs to realize that our definition of civilization and humanity are not the same as in other countries, and they prefer their life as it is.
By Danny Quintana, June 21, 2007 at 10:33 pm # Both parties and the American people are to blame for the war. There is a defense contractor and/or a military installation in every community, every congressional district within two hours of every major city in America. Unions work for defense contractors. Families work at military bases and pressure their congressman to keep them open. Universities receive funding from the Department of Defense. The passive media won’t even show the reality of the war. And both parties voted overwhelmingly for the war. Senator Robert Byrd warned everyone. But no one listened. This one was in the cards. Even if the Supreme Court had not installed bush as Emperor, we still would have gone to war in the Middle East. Saddam wanted to convert to the Euro was one reason. The silly man thought he actually ruled his country. The main reason for this conflict is control of the global economy by controlling the oil supplies. I have no idea how much oil is being stolen. Nobody knows except those in charge. The evidence indicates that the oil fields were seized by our special forces before the invasion! The most recent mid-term elections voters demanded an end to the war. So what happens? The Democrats get bought off with pork and continue the war funding. When we drive our SUV’s to our kid’s soccer games, we need salute the flag and remember the young men and women who are fighting for our right to conspiciously consume energy. No, this is not just a bush administration policy gone bad. This is Pax Americana and all of us need to look in the mirror and honestly admit our small part. Gore denys we would have gone into Iraq under his rule. But where was he when the sanctions were killing children? Where was he when Clinton decided upon “regime change”? The military industrial complex and their congressional allies wanted a war. .... and they got one. Did we really believe that the 400,000 now suddenly unemployed Iraqi army would not fight back when they had weapons, training and an intense hatred of the US? Anyone remember the slaughter of the “highway of death” where our troops killed Iraqi troops walking back to Baghdad after withdrawing from Kuwait? Americans of both parties demanded regime change. Now we have religious fundamentalists alligned with Iran in power in Iraq, wow. You could not scriptsuch a total and complete disaster. All of us played our part. Let’s be honest here. All of us are responsible for this war. And all of us have the responsibility to end it. Danny Quintana
By James R. Crosby, June 20, 2007 at 8:27 pm # Any intelligent American, hell, any intelligent person in world knows that this is a Bush and Bush Administration War, period. This administration has it’s Army in Iraq, murdering People daily, thousands of them a month, meanwhile private Contractor’s are stealing Iraqi oil every day. So we have an American Government that is nothing more that a bunch of murderers and thiefs. And, of course, the real problem with all of this is the future.
