Rep. Henry Waxman of California, ranking Democrat on the House Government Reform Committee, holds up a report during a news conference on Capitol Hill last September. The committee report looks into relationship former lobbyist Jack Abramoff had with the White House.

Rep. Henry Waxman, who more than any other politician is fulfilling the Democrat’s election promise to bring good governance and oversight back to Washington, tells Truthdig about Iraq corruption, the tragedy of post-traumatic stress disorder, and why it’s only a matter of time before Congress—Republicans included—pulls the plug on the war.

“Why is it “just a matter of time before Congress pulls the plug” on the war?  LAst wekk was already way overdue, and the Democrats still dodn’t do it.  It appears that the Democrats can’t even stand up to the worst president in U.S. history.  In truth, it is apparent that Dems are just as much in favor of maintaining a presence in Iraq as the Republicans are.  Waxman’s phony words about the war are only intended to keep the peace movement in the Democrats side for as long as possible.  I don’t buy it anymore.  Mr. Waxman, before last week, it was George Bush’s war.  Now its the Democrats war too!  Congratualtions, you too are now are a proud owner of the Iraq quagmire!”

Because, ass, as Waxman said: The Democrats don’t yet have sufficient votes to do it.  The problem is not the Democrats, ass, it is the foot-dragging Republicans.

Get your head on straight, or STFU.

Or bash those who need to be bashed: the foot-dragging REPUBLICANS.

“For Hank Van D.B.

“You’re absolutely CORRECT. This now becomes the Dems war as well, if ONLY because there were a few that actually voted to fund it. (again). Indeed, ALL of the DEMS should have just said “NO”, to ANY funding of this war. So, when george asked for this last $100 billion, (of “emergency” funding, since he never asks for it to come out of a real budget for “defense") they should have simply told him to go fly a kite, or to supply us with enough jets and fuel to go over there and pick them up ourselves.”

You still don’t get it.  The Democrats forced Bushit to compromise—for the first time in six years—and that’s not an accomplishment to scoff at: He was forced to accept domestic spending included in the bill which he had opposed.  That funding includes monies for veterans affairs.

Also included: an increase in the minimum wage.

Why do those who know diddley about politics assume that the Congress, which has more information and expertise than “We the people,” is stupid?

Stop reading the conspirabunk crap and read something worthwhile—such as the Constitution.

Wasman is awesome; and he has been gathing evidence during the last six years.  But he is not the only Democrat who has been doing so.

You’re absolutely CORRECT. This now becomes the Dems war as well, if ONLY because there were a few that actually voted to fund it. (again). Indeed, ALL of the DEMS should have just said “NO”, to ANY funding of this war. So, when george asked for this last $100 billion, (of “emergency” funding, since he never asks for it to come out of a real budget for “defense") they should have simply told him to go fly a kite, or to supply us with enough jets and fuel to go over there and pick them up ourselves.

HOWEVER, I think that Mr. Waxman articulated this quite well in his interview. I think he explained, (and I’m pretty sure my hearing is still up to par) that they DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH VOTES in the Senate, to accomplish a filibuster. That would be because the Dems maintain an extremely thin majority in the Senate, (51%) and a filibuster requires 60. One Senator is ill, and didn’t vote, and Lieberman (a long term dem turned independent) ALWAYS votes on the republican side of this war.

That said, any democrat that actually voted to provide ANY additional funding without a requirement for an immediate withdrawal, should be called to account by his or her constituency. But the point here, is that even if EVERY SINGLE ONE of them had done so, it would NOT have mattered, because george would have vetoed it anyway, or caught an ass-kicking from his own boss, Dick Cheney.

This is not to make an excuse for the Dems, (and we see here that Mr. Waxman wasn’t trying to make an excuse for them either). He was rather explaining the REALITY of what the dems are still up against, as long as this small group of thugs can control what happens to the majority.

As a card-carrying Democrat, I can say that I too, am very disappointed, and not the least bit satisfied with Nancy Pelosi’s job as Speaker for my party. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty disgusted, since she made it clear from day one, that impeachment was “off the table”, even though it’s the quickest and most efficient way to solve this political impasse. On the other hand, I think we do have to accept the reality that without that impeachment, (of both dick and george) we’re still stuck with the parliamentary procedures of the Constitution, as RE-written by this Mob that passes for an executive branch administration.

Meantime, Mr. Waxman has been, (and will remain) my “hero” for the fact that he actually has put the business of “we the people” on the table, and he has been overwhelmingly committed to doing his job, even when realpolitick has made it incredibly difficult. And, he’s been working all along, putting this information together under the principles that have guided our nation for 300 years, and he’s one of the few (still remaining) that has stayed on it, despite all odds. (the few others that are with him, have been “eliminated”, as so many professionals have during the past 7 years). So, I must admit that I too, am hoping that he gets a bodyguard. (or a team of them) because I personally know how dangerous it is these days, to be a “truth seeker/teller”. Others have been executed by this administration for far less.
And, you really don’t have to “buy” what he’s saying, because if you’re a tax-paying citizen, you already HAVE bought the war, and paid for it dearly.

Henry Waxman is the one and only person of integrity and power who is intent on using his energy in service to America. Watch him on CSpan every chance you get.

Bush said of HW :"Hang him high! Corruption in Iraq or anywhere in the world is my administration priviledge and nobody could denounce it. Myself and “uncle” Dick are big honchos. Just keep your mouth shut!”.

Bravo, Congressman Waxman.

I have followed Representative Henry Waxman’s efforts that constantly have been determinedly attempting to save this nation and its people from barbarism.  I have followed him consistently for years and have found no greater hero.

His never to be deterred energy is enormous and brilliant.

I hope HW has a good bodyguard.  He’s going to be on a lot of hit lists before he’s finished.
Go, Henry!!  California is proud of you!
