The Rev. Joel Hunter in the sanctuary of the Northland, A Church Distributed in Longwood, Fla., Thursday, Dec.14, 2006. Hunter is among a handful of increasingly high-profile evangelical leaders preaching new politics.

Dr. Joel Hunter, author of “Right Wing, Wrong Bird,” joins the podcast this week to explain why things didn’t work out with the Christian Coalition and why global warming and poverty bother him as much as gay marriage and abortion.

If there is one thing that is limiting Christian fundamentalists, its that they are in denial about both climate change as the result of global warming and the falsehood known as “the global war on terror”. Rather than argue the point about either as the issues are already known, we could go straight to the reasons for denial and refusal in the Christian community.

Part of that is to be found in what people want from being Christians and whether that is truly a genuine reflection of their religion’s philosophies - or, more significantly, the teachings and personal example of their religion’s founder. Whether people have really chosen that or merely a more comfortable political agenda is at the heart of the matter.

People can’t have “a relationship with Jesus” or with their creator god as Christians unless they do accept His teachings (NOT the juxtaposed old testament of Jewish history) and go to the same lengths as he did in putting his philosophy into action. That means NOT being a conservative citizen but a radical one in this age of deceit and lies.

Biblical Fact: Everything on the earth belongs to God and we have the responsibility to take care of it.

Legal Fact: Christians have the right in this country to be involved in every detail of what goes on around them; this includes politics and the environment

Biblical Fact & Opinion: God’s people are supposed to be bold and speak out. Those Christians who are not involved and are not speaking their beliefs need to check their motives, their heart, and their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Interesting to observe the fuss among the various faith-based factions as they attempt to come to terms with the destruction of the environment.  I guess it’s always difficult to come to a consensus on a scientific notion when so much of one’s power in these days comes from a terror-based anti-intellectualism.  Dominionism’s eager anticipation of the bloodbath and destruction of Rapture doesn’t particularly invite a dialogue with those who value and seek to protect this old planet and her people.
