Michael Kazin, Reviewer

 

Michael Kazin is a professor of history at Georgetown University. His most recent book is “A Godly Hero: The Life of William Jennings Bryan” (2006), which was named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and NPR’s “Fresh Air,” among other outlets, and was awarded the Order of Merit by Christianity Today.

He is also the author of “America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960s” (with Maurice Isserman, 2007);” The Populist Persuasion: An American History” (1998) and “Barons of Labor: The San Francisco Building Trades and Union Power in the Progressive Era” (1987), which won the Herbert Gutman Prize. He has edited the anthology “In Search of Progressive America” (2008) and, with Joseph A. McCartin, “Americanism: New Perspectives on the History of an Ideal” (2006).

Kazin has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson Center, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Smithsonian Institution. He is now working on “American Dreamers: The Left in U.S. History” and is editor-in-chief of “The Princeton Encyclopedia of United States Political History,” forthcoming in 2009. He is the co-editor of Dissent magazine, a member of the editorial boards of the American Historical Review and World Affairs, and a regular contributor to The Washington Post, The American Prospect, The Nation, The New York Times Book Review, and other publications.
