Retired historian. Research involves the intersection of religion, politics and the public arena, the public schools in particular. Specifically the attempts by Christian, so-called, fundamentalists to exercise control over America’s public institutions and culture in general. Have travelled extensively in Europe and enjoy international discussions of politics and America’s efforts to maintain its hegemony in the world even as we lose more and more credibility as we fight our inevitable decline.
Have taught since the 60s in secondary schools and universities in and around Birmingham, AL.
My goal as an educator has been to help students grow into members of an informed electorate, perhaps the group most threatening to the Bush Administration. I believe that information is the enemy of tyrrany and that the conservative war on the “liberal” media is a fundamental tactic in their efforts to keep the electorate ignorant of their true agenda. I believe that it is no coincidence that a political platform based on dissimulation is presented in the jargon of faith. Faith does not require reason and reason is the enemy of the benighted policies of Bush and the neo-cons.
