Obama Contains His Optimism About BP’s Latest Cap Trick

“It is important we don’t get ahead of ourselves,” President Obama said Friday as he weighed in on BP’s latest attempt at containing the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill with a “larger, more sophisticated cap.” Though this new device may seem to be doing the job for now, the president put the kibosh on any premature back-slapping by sounding a warning: “One of the problems with having this camera down there is, is that when the oil stops gushing, everybody feels like we’re done,” he said, “and we’re not.” —KA
A new cap was used on Thursday to stop the flow for the first time since 20 April, as part of a 48-hour test of the well’s integrity.
Eleven workers were killed in the Deepwater Horizon explosion, and the oil spill has raised fears of an environmental catastrophe.
Spilled oil has affected hundreds of miles of Gulf coastline since April, with serious economic damage to the region.
