Note to Readers

We are currently recovering from what we
believe thought was an attack on the site. We were down for over an hour. In restoring the site, we appear to have lost a number of comments. We deeply regret this. We appreciate the time and thought you put into your comments and we will do our best to retrieve them.
We also lost a few items, so if it feels like a bit of a time warp, you’re not crazy.
Things could be worse. We could still be offline. We could have Sarah Palin as our vice president. We could have devoted six years to watching a show about a mysterious island only to have nothing explained in the series finale.
Update: Our tech people tell us they no longer believe this was an attack. They are still working to identify the problem but they say the outlook for restoring the lost comments does not look good. For the record, we did not erase any comments. We restored the site from a backup taken Tuesday night, so comments posted after that backup occurred (a rough estimate of 100 or so comments) are not posted on the site. Everything should be fine now. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
Again, our sincere apologies to everyone who lost a comment. We consider your participation a vital part of Truthdig’s mission and will continue working to see if there’s a way to restore the missing comments.
