Editors at The Guardian’s Data Blog have assembled an interactive report that maps the number of U.S. military members killed and wounded in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
Texas and California lead the country in lives lost with between 300 and 400 military personnel killed, while Florida and states in the Northeast and Midwest have suffered between 100 and 200 such deaths. The number of wounded is spread a bit more evenly throughout the contiguous U.S.
American deaths were at their highest at points between April 2004 and mid-2007, after which they declined sharply. Data is also available on American deaths in Afghanistan. —Alexander Reed Kelly
