Democrats in the House passed a resolution Thursday telling the president not to bother bringing his compromise extension of tax cuts for the wealthy to their chamber. Nancy Pelosi said Democrats would continue to work with the White House and, if history is our guide, the White House will continue to work with Republicans to get the bill passed. —PZS
NPR:
House Democrats defied President Obama on Thursday, shooting down a deal between the White House and GOP lawmakers to renew the Bush-era tax cuts in exchange for an extension of unemployment benefits.
Democrats, angered by the plan to extend tax cuts to the wealthiest of Americans amid huge budget deficits and falling government revenues, passed a resolution stating that the tax package should not come to the floor of the House for consideration. Peter DeFazio of Oregon introduced the resolution.
